FANTASTIC GAME. Back in the late 80s,early 90s, this was in the only arcade-and a small one at that- in town. Id spend ages watching lads play this,- and the music always stuck with me- its incredible. The main theme is awesome, but the soaring drama and emotion gained by the "castle" theme still gets me like a boss after all these years. I too had the c64 version-very sluggish, but good to have at least at the time. You just cant beat classic footage like this for much needed nostalga.
@@richardhaythorne4632 Im Irish, and yup we say "Lads" all the time aswell! Its just the same as saying "the guys" or a group of people, friends in general. Me and 'the lads' played Rastan a lot back in the day.
Yeah I was visiting a friend who was playing Volgarr The Viking and I instantly thought of Rastan when I was watching him. Just got back home to reminisce about this game and watch some videos. Gonna pick up Volgarr as well.
sunk a billion quarters into this game as a kid in the 80s, think it was at the local bowling alley. thanks for the memories! also, love how time progresses in the first stage (day to nite) waaaay ahead of its time!
I never payed much attention to the name of this game, but absolutely loved it as a kid. Was never good enough to beat the first castle's flame pit. But anyway, many years later, I would always try to find it in arcades, with no luck. And, not knowing the name, never helped. So, I would try and describe it to people best. I could by saying it had a dude that looked like Conan the Barbarian, and every time he jumped, he would be like "hu, hu, hu". I would try to replicate the sound, but very badly lol! Same with when he died, I would try to do the scream, but again, badly. I said the music was really epic, I could hear it perfectly inside my head, and dramatic. But, after many years of searching for it and trying to describe it to people, I was literally about to just give up and let it be lost to my memory forever. Then, one day I was going through some used PS2 games I was going to buy, and I saw Taito Legends. I didn't know that they made Rastan at the time, but lo and behold, there it was, right on the back, a picture of the game! Turns out it was one of the games in the collection found on this PS2 disc. So, naturally I bought it right up, took it home, fired up my PS2, and there it was...the game, Rastan, in all it's arcade glory. Took me nearly twenty years to find that damn game, but you can bet i will always remember the name of it now!
wow this is almost my life story also , I never paid attention to the name but i dumped hundreds of quarters in it only to get to last boss and not be able to kill him , It seemed alot harder to me he did like 3 hits on bosses and they died . I wander if the difficulty is turned down...
Those big statues in the mountainous background look suspiciously like the Argonath in Lord of the Rings. Great game, anyway. Captures that Hyborean World atmosphere.
I dont know why, but i always enjoyed playing these types of arcade games when i was a kid that had this type of thene. Rastan, Rygar, Ghost N' Goblins, Karnov, Altered Beast.
The original japanese's plot had rastan attempting to slay a dragon in exchange for the kingdom's treasure...the american version made it seem like he just had an urge to walk around and kill monsters, which actually kinda makes him EVEN MORE badass
I remember this in my local arcade when I was a kid. A friend of mine was good at this but no way near as good as this guy playing here.... Thanks for the upload. :) Come to think of it, I bet Rastan is still in that arcade...
I'd seriously fly over to visit an arcade with this machine still in operation. I guess I'm getting old and miss the good ole days so much... ah the memories!
This is a real time travel to the past, to my chilhood. It has always been really funny the fact that what can hurt you, it's totally harmless for your enemies. A big hello from Italy
I played this game as a teenager. Yes, it is a difficult game to master. Took me about two years to complete the game using just one quarter. I was pretty good but not quite like this one playing. He completed the game without losing one man. .... wow!
I remember when I finally played through this whole game on 1 quarter….quite an achievement back in my 10 grade year in high school…..where can I play this game today?
wow, i loved this game as a kid, but only had limited time with it in the arcades, so i actually never saw past the first boss of the game. some of the best music in gaming.
So ironic that I was born in 1976 and have never seen this game. I played it yesterday for the first time and I must say that it is very cool. The game is featured on the Taito Pocket Player that is put out by Blaze.
You, Sir, are the shit! Damn! One life only! I remember this game from when I was like 8, it was one of the first games I played, and it was frustrating as shit! Excellent video!
Oh man I remember playing this, Altered Beast and Rygar at a local pizza shop way back when. I never got out of the first round because I would quit playing to eat lol.
Were you using a cheat code? The level 4 boss that shoots blue orbs in all directions had several blue orbs how right through Rastan's head with no damage. Just curious (I'd love to know how). Amazing how close the Master System comes to the arcade version of Conan *cough* Rastan!
blue flasks extra health but he never needed them red flasks took health off you as long as you had the ring you would keep the weapon u were equipped with the armour was obviously less damage from enemys goats head was full health forgot what the necklace done etc
Anybody else suspect that Peter Jackson played this game as a kid? Those giant stone statues in the background look an awful lot the ones at the Gates of Argonath in The Fellowship of the Ring.
I laughed my ass off at the end of the first level "You're a brave fighter to have cleared such a difficult stage", difficult?, that level was so f*cking easy!!!
i been a long time supporter and watcher of yur videos..and i just found out you were gonna have me blocked because i said ''first'' on yur comment bar..i like yur vids of old school and new games but , why deny a fan his admiration and let you know he's watching yur vids as soon as they are uploaded to youtube
The sound in this game is just awesome. The music is some of my favorite arcade music of all time, and the sound effects are really cool, too.

"Lads"???Who talks like that??? U from England or something? Jesus
@@richardhaythorne4632 Im Irish, and yup we say "Lads" all the time aswell! Its just the same as saying "the guys" or a group of people, friends in general. Me and 'the lads' played Rastan a lot back in the day.
Rastan, Black Tiger, Tiger Road, Bad dudes vs Dragon Ninja. My favourite arcade games, and my favorite arcade soundtracks.
Yeah I was visiting a friend who was playing Volgarr The Viking and I instantly thought of Rastan when I was watching him. Just got back home to reminisce about this game and watch some videos. Gonna pick up Volgarr as well.

waaaay ahead of its time!
Arcade archives finally got what everybody wants.
The music with the low chant.. ooooo oooooo brings back a million memories. Bad ass pure and simple.

I can remember when my older brother could beat the game, with a single quarter.
Fond memories of this game, and great music as well.
Great job :-)
1 quarter?!?!?!? your brother must have been an absolute arcade legend.... this game is tough as nails!
𝕀 𝕟𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕓𝕖𝕒𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕘𝕒𝕞𝕖 𝕕𝕒𝕞
Miss the old days of arcades and side scrolling games
I put so many quarters in this machine, I could have bought it
Me too, I would blow half my paper route money on this game when I was a teenager back in the late 80's. Lol
Likewise
I would buy the machine today if it was possible
So many quarters I was so close to beating the game…I believe 50 dollars that was a lot of many for a kid just for a game😊
Those big statues in the mountainous background look suspiciously like the Argonath in Lord of the Rings.
Great game, anyway. Captures that Hyborean World atmosphere.
INdeed my thoughts exactly.. I was like...waaaait where have I seen this?!? But this game is older than the movie, (but not from the book ^^ ) !!!
Right? Maybe the LOTR artists were fans of this game?
People often forget that ARCADE GAME didn't always mean tournament fighting.
Amen Sammy!
I dont know why, but i always enjoyed playing these types of arcade games when i was a kid that had this type of thene. Rastan, Rygar, Ghost N' Goblins, Karnov, Altered Beast.
Swords, axes, maces, fiery blades of a 1000 flames. Rastan Saga has it all!
i love the sound effects, that sort of weird, metallic genesis noise and music was also in Chakan and X-men
the only arcade type game I was good at :) thanks for loading this up Cube
We need this released on modern consoles via Arcade Archives someday, thanks to Hamster.
The original japanese's plot had rastan attempting to slay a dragon in exchange for the kingdom's treasure...the american version made it seem like he just had an urge to walk around and kill monsters, which actually kinda makes him EVEN MORE badass
+Invidente7
Exactly. Japanese always want some backstory. My warrior? He just wants to kill.
Lots of elements from Jungle Hunt (swinging from ropes, dodging boulders) were used for this game.
This was my childhood game....THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS GAME!!!
I remember this in my local arcade when I was a kid. A friend of mine was good at this but no way near as good as this guy playing here.... Thanks for the upload. :)
Come to think of it, I bet Rastan is still in that arcade...
I'd seriously fly over to visit an arcade with this machine still in operation. I guess I'm getting old and miss the good ole days so much... ah the memories!
I love how the enemies look all scary, yet they die with one hit.
Man that last stage is sick looking 👀 you did great
Back then, I couldn't pass 2nd stage, and I'm played in CGA PC, What a memories.
Who knew that mastering this game would be so useful in life 25 years later.
Thanks for posting these longplays. I could never get past the second stage.
The dip off from the Boulder on the 1st board 👍🏿
I spent so many damn quarters on this game back in the day
This is a real time travel to the past, to my chilhood. It has always been really funny the fact that what can hurt you, it's totally harmless for your enemies.

I know this game isn't easy, so to see you spank it so hard is amazing.
´You are a brave fighter to have cleared such a difficult stage...´ :D
I played this game sooooo much in the arcade.
An epic 3 second fight to the death with a dragon at the end
SnesoramaNIG is a brave player to have cleared such a difficult game.
Love this game. And Love the music. "DOO DOOOO!" played this many times at the corner laundrymat I think. :^)
Sound/music are so good, always remember this machine standing out
So ironic that I was born in 1976 and have never seen this game. I played it yesterday for the first time and I must say that it is very cool. The game is featured on the Taito Pocket Player that is put out by Blaze.
I was born also in 1976 and I played back in the 80's on the Sega Master System best port
I forgot about his one , youtube randomly recommended it to me . played in around 2006ish in a arcade
This game has some of the best music I've heard, and suits it well!
If only it didn't repeat so much...inside and out.
The sequel should have followed this game as example on how to make a side scrolling action game. This game is far superior to the sequel by far.
the sequel was one of the sh### games made to date
one of my favorite games of all time
Conan: I can slay a dragon in six sword swings
Rastan: Hold my mead
(Does it in three or fewer)
I remember playing this game at our local rec center. Could finish the game with 1 quarter!
Fun fact: The fireballs that jump up over the flames can actually be destroyed. The hit box is so small that it's usually done by luck though.....
The music from this game used to scare the hell out of us while we ate pizza
Huh. Didn't even know you could do a plunging attack.
That would've been nice to know 6 years ago.
You, Sir, are the shit! Damn! One life only! I remember this game from when I was like 8, it was one of the first games I played, and it was frustrating as shit! Excellent video!
The music to this game was incredible
This game should be in PS4.
Rastan saga,Cadash,Haunted castle my favorites all time
Oh man I remember playing this, Altered Beast and Rygar at a local pizza shop way back when. I never got out of the first round because I would quit playing to eat lol.
Was there a game similar to this, but I remember you could purchase and upgrade armor
Memories....
That was a pretty anticlimactic last boss o.o
Color me impressed...played like a true Boss.
The music reminds me of some pagan sex scene from the movie "Caligula".
Ok are the bosses crazy easy or is he crazy good?
bosses are easy, if you know how. They can be beat easier than in this video...
The sprites in this game are awesome for 1987.
Love the ball cup
Love the soundtrack!!!
I've never heard of this game but it looks quite decent!
Pretty cool !
This is seriously a good game. I'm guessing it was a commercial success?
Rastan what is best in life?
Were you using a cheat code? The level 4 boss that shoots blue orbs in all directions had several blue orbs how right through Rastan's head with no damage. Just curious (I'd love to know how). Amazing how close the Master System comes to the arcade version of Conan *cough* Rastan!
Game use to kick my ass. Nice to see it obliterated....
This and Cadash we're two of my favorite games at the time.
Wait, what's the point of those flasks, jewels, etc? Did I miss something?
blue flasks extra health but he never needed them red flasks took health off you as long as you had the ring you would keep the weapon u were equipped with the armour was obviously less damage from enemys goats head was full health forgot what the necklace done etc
BRETT TATSUMAKISENPUKIAKU actually the ring was weapon speed up and necklace was bonus points for enemies destroyed.
Surprisingly interesting music!
3:36 Oh god what's wrong with his torso?! O-O
Nothing beats the arcade version
Anybody else suspect that Peter Jackson played this game as a kid? Those giant stone statues in the background look an awful lot the ones at the Gates of Argonath in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Rastan- The King of Man and Beast. YAAHH!!!
this game would look mice next to gauntlet.
I always got to the last stage but could never clock it because on the last stage you couldn't continue lol
This one reminds me of the legendary axe. Now I know why the sequel tanked!
I dont remember the game being this easy. Is it being played on lower difficulty or something?
Why is this described as Rastan A?
I would really like to see a remake of this game. It's possible!!!!
You made this game look piss easy. It probably isn't though.
i assure it isn't. if you get a chance to Mame it do so. it takes weeks of pratice
It's brutally hard!
Amazing just one life, I spent 30 virtual dollars on a mame machine and quit in round 5 from frustration. The game has a nasty checkpoint system
I always get stuck in the mud on round 5 - ARRGH!
RASTAN...! What is best in life??
Close your eyes, and pretend it's a conan arcade game...it's as close as it ever will get and light years ahead of the crummy NES games
This always reminded me of He-Man.
the game is good but the boss battles are
well
pretty easy
STAGE 1 町 ENEMY デビル ハイデビル リザードマン ワーウルフ ビーストデーモン スピアデビル レライエ コボルト 半魚人 BOSS ゴーレム
TRAP 火炎瓶
Since when dud bosses becone the easiest enemy?
Try the master system port much more enjoyable. Or volgar if u want very hard
This reminds me of Volgarr the Viking...
NO WAIT-
Harder final boss of ever!!:-)
i could never make the waterfall jump...EVER :(
느낌이 아로고스의 전사와 비슷한데 아로고스의 전사처럼 한방맞아도 죽으면 난이도가 장난아닐.
@ 0:11 Lord of the Rings monuments
This game was hard but I finnally beat it after spending a fortune
