I'm not a person who enjoys puzzles, and yet I love your channel. It has helped me see that I approach puzzles with the wrong attitude which causes me to get frustrated easily. I really feel that I've learned a lot from you about solving not only tangible puzzles, but life conundrums, too: stay calm, be patient, abandon preconceptions, listen, try fiddling with each segment even if it appears to be solid, be careful, but don't be afraid to apply a little pressure. It's strange to think your puzzle channel has changed my outlook on life, but it's true! Thank you!
I’ve got a very similar puzzle box handed down from my grandmother which is over 100 years old. It opens in exactly the same way as this one. You’re supposed to turn the key twice to lock and unlock it. Plus, of course, the key turns the wrong way - clockwise to unlock it rather than anti-clockwise which is more usual. I love this video - for once I was shouting instructions at the screen rather than being completely bewildered.
My mom has one on display at their home, also inherited I think. Now I got check if it works the same next time I'm there. I only remembered there was some trick with the center panel, so maybe I've never seen the secret place to hide the key.
Hehe, I have one of those since 1998. I bought it directly on a market in Romania. It its the same except in mine there is no slot in the side-slide for the key - the key is just inside the lower compartment. Great to see that they are still producing and selling them now on the internet.
My father had one with his name engraved on it. I remember playing with it when I was small, trying to figure out the puzzle. After he passed I keept it as a wonderful momento.
What a beautiful box and great idea to make a mystery box.. I hope one day You'll made your own since your intelligence is so high and I'm just surprised how many puzzles you have saved until today... WOOW!!!
The only gift my grandfather, who I only met once, gave me this exact design (with a few changes) on my 16th birthday. He got in Korea in the 50s. It has the date he got it written inside. All but one move is the same and it had an actually metal key in the bottom. One of the only interactions I had with him before he did was showing me how the box worked. I cherished it. It was hand made as well and had a beautiful picture of a bird paint on top. Sadly it was lost in a fire but this reminded me so much of it I'm shocked. Thank you for this. I didnt think I'd get so emotional from a puzzle video.
4:46 Once you discovered the keyhole I said out loud, "Is there a hidden key in one of the sliding portions?" and as soon as I said it, you found it and was like, "Hah! I'm getting better at this!" ... Then you rated it a Level 2 and I was like, "Oh ... maybe not..."
Okay! Mr. Puzzle you have just won the most awesome and cherished video in my "watch later" (for SECOND and iterative viewing) category. I love the speed you did this in and your appreciation for the quality. I have commented on your other videos, in fact on your most recent one
I think the foam was intended to be placed behind the mirror... (Hold the mirror in place, from the back.) New guy on the assembly line, didn't know where to put it. This is a great gift for a kid who is into secret places and magic tricks. With a little work, you could expose the mirror compartment more and add a better mirror with a magnetic trim to hold it in place.
@Mr. Puzzle: in Romania you can buy it from the Bran Fair for example (their design includes an engraved metal coin on the lid as well with the BRAN Castle - so called Dracula's Castle), the large one, for about 10-12 euros, so the actual prices are even cheaper. I bought 3 different sizes, with 25 euros (1 small, 1 medium, 1 large). The nice thing is the solution varies a bit on each size, but still the same principle. They are indeed beautiful for gifts. Also, love your videos, keep on puzzling!
Wow. My wife has a 9 front piece sized box just like this she picked up in Romania many years ago. Same solution but hers isn't velvet lined, the pattern is different (definitely hand carved), and they solved some of the wonkiness of things like the key falling into the puzzle as you remove the side but still has the same janky mirror, lock, and key. Beautiful box and funny seeing it on your channel surprised me a ton. Keep on puzzling!
Brittany Lyons Treasure Within. I liked that one more but this one gives you more space to hide stuff and i was thinking about using it to give my girl a cute present for our 1 year :)
How lovely. I've had a bigger version of this box, with the same decorations, for over 35 years. And, yea, I keep my treasures and special stuff in it. An old and favourite friend. My adult son still hasn't got the hang of it.
Draculas box yeah, it's just the generic, definitely not handmade box sold basicly everywhere here in Hungary. The difficulty to open the box increases with what size you get. All of them have the same key obviously and don't worry about applying force to turn the key as it has a horrible locking mechanism. I got mine about 12 years ago, sold at some castle ruins we visited with my school. Basically if you visit any interesting location outside of the capital you will find someone selling this with the exact same motives on it.
@Mr.Puzzle When you pressed on the only piece in the front that moved, I was very impressed with your ability to use curiosity as a solution. Keep doing these reviews we need them 😋
I love this box..... I have 8 grown children... and I think this would be amazing to get each of them one as a gift and see which one can open it first....lol
I like your channel. These puzzles look fun. I like to figure out puzzles and tricks. Hopefully one day Pinhead's chains don't come screaming out of a box at you.
I don't usually comment on RUclips despite being a voracious consumer. And having seen a huge amount of your catalogue in the last few weeks... This happens to be your best video ever. The music was perfect, the way we discovered the box with you was perfect and the fact that it was as beautiful it was helped the video too! Overall bravo!
I have this box! My grandparents got it for me like 15 yrs ago from a trip they went in. The design on the box is different, but I love it. The inside of mine is yellow also. And my mirror is so tightly stuck between the wood pieces I have a hard time getting it out, thinking I’m gunna break something when I take it out.
We bought a box that looked similar and this helped us solve it. Thanks! We were so afraid to break it that we weren't willing to push too hard when sliding pieces.
I put a piece of wood in the first compartment to block the slider. So you have to find the key first before finding the lock. Works well for me and makes it a bit more difficult
You didn't think about putting the sponge being the mirror in the little compartment to "hold" the mirror in place afterwards?? That would stop it from moving....
It's been almost 30 years since I got the exact same puzzle box from romainiana and good to see they have kept the original design on the outside of the box
Very Cool, hi Mr. Puzzle it is I the SkyWalker writing to comment about this video if I may, very cool: I would put money in that puzzle that compartment it can hold a good amount of cash, I then would gift it to someone with a note that says "reward inside if you can figure out how to open it" very cool puzzle indeed, my vote for one of the top five "style" puzzles.
I have watched many of your videos and I always wondered what you look like. When the mirror came out I was thinking your reflection was going to be in it. Awesome puzzle.
I have one of those! Almost just like it. Mine is from Budapest, Ukraine. Got it about 17 years ago as a gift from my boyfriends parents after they went there on vacation.
I got one like this while deployed to Bosnis. My wife still has it but it swelled and doesn't close anymore. Same woodworker made a cribbage board with 5 groups of 6 holes. I still use it.
I found a similar box on a bazar in turkey. It lacks the other two secret compartments though. The one on the bottom is just small enough, so that the key fits inside.
You can buy this any time in Hungary. It's really common. There are hundreds of these in any market they're all the same, it's in different sizes and colors. The seller says this is a secret box. (They don't call it puzzle at all.) Most of the ppl hate these boxes because there are too many of them lol but kids loves it
Growing up, my mother had the exact same box, only much bigger, gifted to her by my uncle from Romania. She used it as a Jewelry box. we always played wit it and hid thing in the bottom compartment.
A decade ago, I bought 8 boxes very very similar to this one while in Turkey. Gave one to my parents, kept one myself, gave the other six to my siblings. Had everyone sitting in the living room when I gave them out and watched them race to solve them.
Surprised no one in the comments made the connection between this box and Dracula. In the 1931 movie, there is a scene where Dracula is among people that suspect he is a vampire. He opens a box like this that has a mirror in it and the people around him see that he does not have a reflection in the mirror. Another good one Mr. Puzzle, that's a beauty, 2 out of 5 for you, for me it would be a 4 out of 5. :) .... I think that foam piece would be better behind the mirror to hold it in place.
What color would you pick?

Sorry but this is a hungaryan puzzel box named Budapest Puzzle

There is a reflection, but only in total dark!

Same here. My mom has one she bought when she was stationed in Hawaii, in the 1950s, and I bought her one from Afghanistan.

My grandmother gave me one too
I bought an identical box on a market in Thailand 25 years ago
Same, my father got one from Romania and showed it to me when I was young. Sad they aren't made of better wood, our's broke a few years back.
Local thief arrested and quoted as saying, "I came for the jewelry, stayed for the puzzle. 10/10 would rob again."
My dad bought me the same box in Hungary, in green color. Pretty fun thing to play with.
You could put a small, ball bearing in the lid compartment to throw people off...ha
That's evil!
...
I love you for it.
@@Dargonhuman ... i have a dark sense of humor..lol

Or you could let the mirror slide loose in its track (remove foam) to get a satisfying “clacking” sound when you tilt the box from left to right.
English isn't my first language, but i thought I'm good enough lol. Could you please explain what you mean??
I want to see Mr.Puzzle play The Room series of games
Yes his puzzle boxes always remind me of the room
Hah. Yes! On Twitch, too!

This box looks as if you’re either gonna find some valuable currency/rings inside, or be cursed..
Or Dracula
Or weed
Or both

I’ve had a couple of these boxes my whole life, it’s so cool to see something that’s a family heirloom of sorts on here!
My father had one with his name engraved on it. I remember playing with it when I was small, trying to figure out the puzzle. After he passed I keept it as a wonderful momento.
Oh I get it now...
The purpose of the box is to get INSIDE the box by thinking OUTSIDE the box.

Ooh, this is beautiful. This is exactly the kind of box i want. It could be a bit more sturdy, but the steps to open it look very satisfying.
Can you do a video showing your whole puzzle collection? I think that it would be pretty fun and interesting!
Thank you for sharing this clever and beautiful puzzle box with us! Though the glossy varnish makes me think of a pretzel. :)
