Yes, Chasing Amy - era Joey Lauren Adams and Empire Records - era Renee Zellweger are very similar. I always thought Joey should've gotten a LOT more attention than she did.
The story, i get so invested, very progressive for 1997. What an accomplishment by Kevin Smith. Her performance, her emotions are genuine not just acting for acting sakes. This movie deserves all the praise and should be more talked about.

The thing is Alyssa is sexually adventurous... Of course she is. Her sister is "Trish the dish" Jones from "Mallrats". Also alot of Alyssa's partners were from previous films Gwen Turner (who she played in Mallrats), Shannon Hamilton (who Ben played in Mallrats), Rick Derris (Clerks). Banky references Brandi Svenning (TS' girlfriend in Mallrats). Also during the bar scene the blonde Alyssa was making out with was Carmen Llewellyn Lee (Jason Lee's then wife).
I loved your observation about the scene between Holden & Banky after he finds the new couple on the couch, how it's more of a quiet scene and less of a snappy back and forth that Kevin Smith is known for. That's one of the things that always sneaks up on me every time I watch this movie. I'm prepared for Holden's "I love you monologue" and the heated conversation in the rain that follows. I'm prepared for Joey's scene in the parking lot where she totally earns an Academy Award even though she was wrongfully not nominated for one. But it's the softer moments that really hit me. I am crushed when Banky looks at Holden on that stoop and says "I wasn't talking about the comic." I lose my breath when Holden is crying on the couch and Banky simply asks "Girl?" and Holden nods. I am floored by the editing in the hockey rink and the white-knuckle tension it builds even though this is a romantic comedy. There's a lot here that showcases all the the typical Smithisms established in Clerks in Mallrats, but also foreshadows where Smith will go as a writer, director and editor in Dogma, Clerks 2 and even Red State.
The hockey scene was Kevin's answer to putting action in the film because someone told him to do his drama thing, but put it on a rollercoaster, so he didn't have the budget for that. During the rain scene you can see the crew filming in the windows on the buildings
You're supposed to make a note when they mention DeGrassi Jr High! Very much a Smithism. And yes, this is probably sneakily his best movie, even if Dogma remains my fave. This one is the one that shows real people being stupid, self-centred, emotionally clumsy. Cuts so close. And teaches indeed not to let someone's bits determine your attraction to them

This is the most underrated KS movie to ever exist. He did a real, solid romance story that works beautifully, and not just another goofball comedy. Yeah, it had his usual elements in it, but it's incredibly touching. The movie overall is progressive, that doesn't mean the people in it always are. Please continue the Kevin Smith filmography. Not all of them are this deep, but they're all worth seeing.

-My favorite is still Dogma but this was a great movie. Yanni!” -I liked that while Jason Lee played a role similar to Brodie(obnoxious friend that makes unusual comments), he doesn’t get a redemption scene. We never see where Bankie has that “I realize where I was wrong” moment and tries to fix his personal situation. I’m not saying his attitude was fine. I just don’t want it to be where Smith got lazy with writing. -This was the movie that got Smith a chance from Warner Brothers to do rewrite work with him getting the chance to write the Superman movie that ended up going to Tim Burton, who wanted to cast Nicolas Cage as Superman. There’s a movie about it but he also told the story in An Evening With Kevin Smith, which is so much fun. After you see Dogma and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, try to find it.

It says something for the esteem in which Chasing Amy is held that its first home video release (Laserdisc, then DVD) was in the Criterion Collection. Usually movies have to be around for a while and gather a consensus of respect before Criterion "adopts" them.

The only movies I remember watching with my dad were from the View Askewnivers. Shocked the shit out of me when I found out that my conservative Vietnam Vet father and I had something in common.
yeah, I'd say that chasing amy is one of the closest movies ever to show the joys and sorrows of being worldly. The fact that you can connect with other people on so many wavelengths and so many different intellectual pursuits is the plus, the downside is that you are likely to end up in situations where you split with them, where your conception of the world doesn't quite match with the people you care about and you end.up drifting apart - or ultimately hurt - over ideas or their worldview. I personally feel like I'm chasing quite a few amys in my past, where now I know that difference of ideas is just a stupid thing to fight over, and would love to go back and tell my more arrogant self to just chill out and keep them as friends. But it is what it is, and sometimes I envy people who have chosen a simpler way of life.
As far as Tone goes this was so different when compared to clerks or mallrats. I have trouble lumping it in with those two. Still a thoroughly enjoyable flick though 👍
About references: Julie Dwyer is BOTH a Mallrats and a Clerks reference, because while it was her death that put Mallrats' plot in motion, her funeral is the one Randal and Dante skipped out on the stores on to go visit. And while Kevin Smith started making Star Wars references at a time when that franchise's pop culture influence was near its lowest point, Chasing Amy was hitting theaters just weeks after the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy. And while at the time, the question "What's a Nubian?" had little connection to Star Wars outside of Kevin's scriptwriting, just two years after Chasing Amy dropped, Phantom Menace established Nubia as the place where the hyperdrive on Queen Amadala's ship came from. While it's never been confirmed that Lucas was referencing the line from Smith's film (that I know of anyway), if it's not a reference, it's one hell of a coincidence.

The reason it feels so real is Kevin Smith said it's based on one of his own relationships. He just made the conversations more witty. He also date Joey Lauren Adams for a while. He didn't say if the story was based on her or not.
I believe Smith did say it was (very loosely) based off of his relationship with Adams. I don’t think he specified what the thing was that she was more experienced with than he was, but it was more about dealing with his insecurity that inspired this.
Here's some more references you haven't noticed -Alysaa Jones is the sister of Tricia from Mallrats, the kid doing the sex book. She's also the sister to the girl at the end of Clerks who leaves with Rick Derris (the trainer) -the scene where they're talking about their sex lives in the bar. Jason Lee brings up Brandi Svenning and her Dad. Those are the daughter/father from Mallrats. -Alysaa mentions having sex with Gwen, the actress played Gwen in Mallrats (the one who Silent Bob kept crashing into) -Ethan Suplee, the comic book fan is playing a new character. In Mallrats he plays William, a whole different character, though you can argue they never say his name. Kevin Smith wrote this film after his break up with the lead actress when he found out what she did in her past relationships. Joey Lauren Adams said she remained friends with him as she felt this was his way of apologizing for his reaction. Kevin's brother is also gay and he wanted to give him a film he can enjoy.
The thing I like best about this movie is that when Silent Bob finally speaks, it's the most intelligent, spot-on monologue in the whole movie, and how Ben Affleck's character completely misses the point. To me, that's the most realistic scene in the whole film. Joey Lauren Adams had a small role in the movie "Michael", which is another great movie you should do a reaction to.
Watched this movie with my big sister when it came out. I was 13. The dialogue was a little over my head I understood the message and my little pansexual heart understood itself a little better. It’s still amazing. I loved the gay black character and the honest conversations about attraction.

You are starting to catch on to all of the references to the view askew characters that are snuck into each of his movies. Rick Derris was the trainer who makes fun of Dante being out of shape and informs Dante he had sex with Caitlin Bree while Dante was still dating her. He was referenced in Mallrats as the guy who had sex with Gwen on the pool table dressed as Smokie and the bandit. The comic convention is a Flanagan's Event referencing Walt Flanagan. Smith does this through all the movies.
Plus, the woman who played Alyssa's girlfriend in the end was Kevin Smith's sister who played the caged animal worker in Clerks. Also, the dude who played Dante was playing an identical cousin of Dante for the second time.

IMHO this is Kevin Smith’s best movie. And, yes, it did change my perspective on life and love. I think any movie that can leave you feeling better walking out than it did walking in is a great movie. I also love the fact that we didn’t get the ubiquitous happy ending. But, in a way, it was closure. Holden, Banky, and Alyssa all evolved and grew from their shared experiences.
Absolute favorite of Kevin's movies. I saw this maybe 8 times in the theater, often dragging other people along just to see their reaction. This one still hits pretty hard and still gives me goosebumps. And the music is great, but this never got a soundtrack. The song after the hockey game breakup was hard to track down back in the day, but it and the Soul Asylum song at the end are amazing.
This is my favorite view askew film. I had always wished Smith continued to make amazing films like this as opposed to strictly comedies in this universe. This is his best film.

I loved this movie when I was a teen (in the 90's). As for the question you asked fairly early in the reaction I'd say I was a mixture of the feelings of the characters back then. I'm in total support now and would like to call myself an ally of the LGBTQIA+ (but that's for them to decide). Back then there was still a big stigma about being gay and it was used as an insult all of the time. I just didn't have any exposure at all to it. By today's standards I was probably fairly toxic but in my defense I was just acting like the people around me acted. I don't think I'd ever say anything mean to someone gay if I were to meet them but I probably would've been very nervous. It was just the times, I guess. But this movie was actually really eye-opening to me and gave me some of that exposure that I desperately needed. It started me on a journey of discovering that being gay wouldn't be the worst thing ever and it's not scary. If you're turning into a total Kevin Smith fan then I might have to suggest looking into a series of videos called An Evening with Kevin Smith. I'm not even sure where they can be found these days and I don't know how reaction worthy they are but back in the day Kevin Smith would go to different college campuses and be on stage to talk to the students there. I think it was mainly for the benefit of those looking to get into film but I'm sure a ton of fans showed up as well. I'd say it's a Q and A but you could barely tell because he'd spend soooooo long answering a single question and just go off on telling stories about his past and other things. I found it really, really interesting and also incredibly funny. If you can find a way to get your hands on some of those I'd highly suggest it. I just like to hear him talk and tell stories and this satisfies that completely.
If you can find a criterion copy of this, buy it. The commentary track is so good and hints at Kevin Smith writing in a woman’s voice. It’s the strongest and most enduring of the Kevin Smith oeuvre. Loved your reaction and keep up the amazing work!
It was during or right after this that Ben gave Kevin his script for Good Will Hunting. Kevin read it and rushed it over to Miramax and told the Weinsteins they to read it immediately. Ben and Matt had sold it yo Castle Rock where it went into limbo. Miramax bought it. That's why Kevin and Scott Mosier are executive producers of Good Will Hunting. Ben was inspired by Clerks to write his own script.
I got to see this at Sundance the year it came out. Definitely was a little different from when I saw it at my local theater chain. Apparently they made a couple of edits to it before general release.
The reason this one feels so raw and real is that it’s very loosely based on Kevin Smith and Joey Lauren Adams’ relationship. She was from the big city and he was a Catholic Jersey boy and initially had a hard time accepting that she had a past. Definitely his most mature film, at least in the Askewniverse, but I think Dogma is my favourite and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back may be the funniest. And - and I kid you not even slightly - Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, while being the weakest of the Askewniverse films, actually made me cry. And - and I really really kid you not even slightly - the thing that made me cry was the quality of acting from Jason Mewes in one scene. On the whole Smith, especially Smith of this era, is something of a conundrum. He’s got the whole “anything is fair game for a joke” mentality of the 90s, but not the “caring about stuff is stupid” attitude that normally comes with it. He’s a small-town boy and that’s baked into his DNA, but he’s also progressive and sentimental. He’s crude, but he’s not crass. The perfect example is Jay, who’s just a walking Id, casually calling Alyssa “Fingercuffs” but not actually thinking any less of her for what got her the name or her past. He’ll call her the name but he doesn’t judge her for it.
Watching you react to this classic has been awesome..to say this film was pivotal to me as a 17year old when it came out is an understatement..it was way ahead of its time & I have used quotes from it to help pull some of my friends heads out of their assess lol..
great reaction. definitely a stand out as far as Kevin Smith movies goes. so, a couple years ago my kid came out to me as non-binary, maybe gay or at least bi, and possibly trans (still trying to figure that one out). I remember them almost visibly shaking, worried what I'd think of all of it. Now, I'm very much a liberal, her mom, not so much, but that's a whole other conversation. After they were done spilling their guts out, looked at me for a reaction, and I was like "alright, cool... ya know, I think I have a movie we should watch tonight." And this was it. They absolutely love Clerks and so thought they'd appreciate this one, considering the subject matter (during our conversation they told me they don't find people attractive by gender, but by personality, much like Alyssa). They absolutely fell in love with the movie and it really seemed to connect with it. I remember telling them, "keep in mind, this came out in the mid 90s, it was way ahead of its time." And they were like "damn, that's so progressive for that time period... thank you Kevin Smith." So yeah, just thought I'd share that story. Keep up the great work

Chasing Amy is probably Kevin Smith's best (though Dogma is a close second). I had seen Clerks, but this was the movie that really got me into Keven Smith. One of my all time favs.
I've been digging your reactions for a while now...and even more now that you're on the Kevin Smith train.... If you ever get the chance I STRONGLY suggest watching the commentary tracks for any of his films. They are just as funny as the movies and he always has the actors in on it too.
I'm always Shocked that Joey Lauren Adams wasn't a bigger star by now. She's a very well known name actor, but she is not as recognized or have the resume that matches her talent.
It says something for the esteem in which Chasing Amy is held that its first home video release (Laserdisc, then DVD) was in the Criterion Collection. Usually movies have to be around for a while and gather a consensus of respect before Criterion "adopts" them.

"This is my Marvel?" Fucking brilliant. I fell in love with Kevin Smith's movies as a teenager. The only filmmaker my Dad and I ever talked about was Kevin Smith. The only movies I remember watching with my dad were from the View Askewnivers. Shocked the shit out of me when I found out that my conservative Vietnam Vet father and I had something in common.
yeah, I'd say that chasing amy is one of the closest movies ever to show the joys and sorrows of being worldly. The fact that you can connect with other people on so many wavelengths and so many different intellectual pursuits is the plus, the downside is that you are likely to end up in situations where you split with them, where your conception of the world doesn't quite match with the people you care about and you end.up drifting apart - or ultimately hurt - over ideas or their worldview.
I personally feel like I'm chasing quite a few amys in my past, where now I know that difference of ideas is just a stupid thing to fight over, and would love to go back and tell my more arrogant self to just chill out and keep them as friends. But it is what it is, and sometimes I envy people who have chosen a simpler way of life.
I can't wait for you to do Dogma. It is my favorite in the View Askew universe.
As far as Tone goes this was so different when compared to clerks or mallrats. I have trouble lumping it in with those two. Still a thoroughly enjoyable flick though 👍
About references: Julie Dwyer is BOTH a Mallrats and a Clerks reference, because while it was her death that put Mallrats' plot in motion, her funeral is the one Randal and Dante skipped out on the stores on to go visit.
And while Kevin Smith started making Star Wars references at a time when that franchise's pop culture influence was near its lowest point, Chasing Amy was hitting theaters just weeks after the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy. And while at the time, the question "What's a Nubian?" had little connection to Star Wars outside of Kevin's scriptwriting, just two years after Chasing Amy dropped, Phantom Menace established Nubia as the place where the hyperdrive on Queen Amadala's ship came from. While it's never been confirmed that Lucas was referencing the line from Smith's film (that I know of anyway), if it's not a reference, it's one hell of a coincidence.
20 years ago I walked into my favorite gas station, and held the door for someone. That guy looked familiar I thought. Walked in and the kids behind the counter were all excited. “That was Kevin Smith!” Well, he sure made their day.

I'm actually seeing a lot of these people at a convention this weekend: Jason Mewes, Jason Lee, Joey Lauren Adams, alongside some of the Clerks cast. It should be pretty fun.
The reason it feels so real is Kevin Smith said it's based on one of his own relationships. He just made the conversations more witty. He also date Joey Lauren Adams for a while. He didn't say if the story was based on her or not.
I believe Smith did say it was (very loosely) based off of his relationship with Adams. I don’t think he specified what the thing was that she was more experienced with than he was, but it was more about dealing with his insecurity that inspired this.

-Alysaa Jones is the sister of Tricia from Mallrats, the kid doing the sex book. She's also the sister to the girl at the end of Clerks who leaves with Rick Derris (the trainer)
-the scene where they're talking about their sex lives in the bar. Jason Lee brings up Brandi Svenning and her Dad. Those are the daughter/father from Mallrats.
-Alysaa mentions having sex with Gwen, the actress played Gwen in Mallrats (the one who Silent Bob kept crashing into)
-Ethan Suplee, the comic book fan is playing a new character. In Mallrats he plays William, a whole different character, though you can argue they never say his name.
Kevin Smith wrote this film after his break up with the lead actress when he found out what she did in her past relationships.
Joey Lauren Adams said she remained friends with him as she felt this was his way of apologizing for his reaction. Kevin's brother is also gay and he wanted to give him a film he can enjoy.
The thing I like best about this movie is that when Silent Bob finally speaks, it's the most intelligent, spot-on monologue in the whole movie, and how Ben Affleck's character completely misses the point. To me, that's the most realistic scene in the whole film. Joey Lauren Adams had a small role in the movie "Michael", which is another great movie you should do a reaction to.
Suburbia is another 90's movie with dialog and Gen X angst. If you like Kevin's movies you'll like Suburbia.

It’s a shame the the tagline revealed something that we as the audience weren’t privileged to know.
Watched this movie with my big sister when it came out. I was 13. The dialogue was a little over my head I understood the message and my little pansexual heart understood itself a little better. It’s still amazing. I loved the gay black character and the honest conversations about attraction.
Dogma is Kevin's best movie. But Chasing Amy has the most heart.

If you want some great Kevin Smith trivia watch "A Threevening with Kevin Smith". He talks about this film, his relationship with Joey Lauren Adams and Bruce Willis, and tons of other stuff.
You are starting to catch on to all of the references to the view askew characters that are snuck into each of his movies. Rick Derris was the trainer who makes fun of Dante being out of shape and informs Dante he had sex with Caitlin Bree while Dante was still dating her. He was referenced in Mallrats as the guy who had sex with Gwen on the pool table dressed as Smokie and the bandit. The comic convention is a Flanagan's Event referencing Walt Flanagan. Smith does this through all the movies.
Plus, the woman who played Alyssa's girlfriend in the end was Kevin Smith's sister who played the caged animal worker in Clerks. Also, the dude who played Dante was playing an identical cousin of Dante for the second time.

Gotta love Red Bank. I grew up one town over but spent a lot of time there (and in the park where they're sitting on the swings talking).
My absolute favorite detail is during the big diner scene, Jay gets bored while Bob is talking and starts eating sugar in the background.
not sure if you have noticed, or someone has told you already, that Julie Dwyer was also mentioned in 'Clerks', she was the funeral Dante and Randall closed up to go to. so at this point she's actually part of all 3 KS movies.
IMHO this is Kevin Smith’s best movie. And, yes, it did change my perspective on life and love. I think any movie that can leave you feeling better walking out than it did walking in is a great movie.
I also love the fact that we didn’t get the ubiquitous happy ending. But, in a way, it was closure. Holden, Banky, and Alyssa all evolved and grew from their shared experiences.
Of all Kevin Smith’s films, Chasing Amy is the only film of his to make it to The Criterion Collection, to my knowledge.

Absolute favorite of Kevin's movies. I saw this maybe 8 times in the theater, often dragging other people along just to see their reaction. This one still hits pretty hard and still gives me goosebumps.
And the music is great, but this never got a soundtrack. The song after the hockey game breakup was hard to track down back in the day, but it and the Soul Asylum song at the end are amazing.
This is a really good one, but my favorite has to be 'Dogma' and I am beyond excited for that one!

This is my favorite view askew film. I had always wished Smith continued to make amazing films like this as opposed to strictly comedies in this universe. This is his best film.

If you want to see radically different Kevin Smith film - check out Red State. Another slightly different kind of movie of his is Yoga Hosers his daughter, Jhonny Depp and his daughter.

I think the girl who drowned mid backstroke was the girl who funeral they attended in Clerks was...so you were still right!! Thats where the gag began..and then contionued in Mallrats!
I loved this movie when I was a teen (in the 90's). As for the question you asked fairly early in the reaction I'd say I was a mixture of the feelings of the characters back then. I'm in total support now and would like to call myself an ally of the LGBTQIA+ (but that's for them to decide). Back then there was still a big stigma about being gay and it was used as an insult all of the time. I just didn't have any exposure at all to it. By today's standards I was probably fairly toxic but in my defense I was just acting like the people around me acted. I don't think I'd ever say anything mean to someone gay if I were to meet them but I probably would've been very nervous. It was just the times, I guess. But this movie was actually really eye-opening to me and gave me some of that exposure that I desperately needed. It started me on a journey of discovering that being gay wouldn't be the worst thing ever and it's not scary.
If you're turning into a total Kevin Smith fan then I might have to suggest looking into a series of videos called An Evening with Kevin Smith. I'm not even sure where they can be found these days and I don't know how reaction worthy they are but back in the day Kevin Smith would go to different college campuses and be on stage to talk to the students there. I think it was mainly for the benefit of those looking to get into film but I'm sure a ton of fans showed up as well. I'd say it's a Q and A but you could barely tell because he'd spend soooooo long answering a single question and just go off on telling stories about his past and other things. I found it really, really interesting and also incredibly funny. If you can find a way to get your hands on some of those I'd highly suggest it. I just like to hear him talk and tell stories and this satisfies that completely.
If you can find a criterion copy of this, buy it. The commentary track is so good and hints at Kevin Smith writing in a woman’s voice. It’s the strongest and most enduring of the Kevin Smith oeuvre. Loved your reaction and keep up the amazing work!
To be fair, Julie Dwyer died originally in Clerks. We just didn't know who she was until Mallrats.

Joey Lauren Adams "girlfriend" in the bar scene was played by Jason Lee's girlfriend at the time.
It was during or right after this that Ben gave Kevin his script for Good Will Hunting. Kevin read it and rushed it over to Miramax and told the Weinsteins they to read it immediately. Ben and Matt had sold it yo Castle Rock where it went into limbo. Miramax bought it. That's why Kevin and Scott Mosier are executive producers of Good Will Hunting. Ben was inspired by Clerks to write his own script.
I got to see this at Sundance the year it came out. Definitely was a little different from when I saw it at my local theater chain. Apparently they made a couple of edits to it before general release.
The reason this one feels so raw and real is that it’s very loosely based on Kevin Smith and Joey Lauren Adams’ relationship. She was from the big city and he was a Catholic Jersey boy and initially had a hard time accepting that she had a past.
Definitely his most mature film, at least in the Askewniverse, but I think Dogma is my favourite and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back may be the funniest. And - and I kid you not even slightly - Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, while being the weakest of the Askewniverse films, actually made me cry. And - and I really really kid you not even slightly - the thing that made me cry was the quality of acting from Jason Mewes in one scene.
On the whole Smith, especially Smith of this era, is something of a conundrum. He’s got the whole “anything is fair game for a joke” mentality of the 90s, but not the “caring about stuff is stupid” attitude that normally comes with it. He’s a small-town boy and that’s baked into his DNA, but he’s also progressive and sentimental. He’s crude, but he’s not crass. The perfect example is Jay, who’s just a walking Id, casually calling Alyssa “Fingercuffs” but not actually thinking any less of her for what got her the name or her past. He’ll call her the name but he doesn’t judge her for it.
Watching you react to this classic has been awesome..to say this film was pivotal to me as a 17year old when it came out is an understatement..it was way ahead of its time & I have used quotes from it to help pull some of my friends heads out of their assess lol..
great reaction. definitely a stand out as far as Kevin Smith movies goes. so, a couple years ago my kid came out to me as non-binary, maybe gay or at least bi, and possibly trans (still trying to figure that one out). I remember them almost visibly shaking, worried what I'd think of all of it. Now, I'm very much a liberal, her mom, not so much, but that's a whole other conversation. After they were done spilling their guts out, looked at me for a reaction, and I was like "alright, cool... ya know, I think I have a movie we should watch tonight." And this was it. They absolutely love Clerks and so thought they'd appreciate this one, considering the subject matter (during our conversation they told me they don't find people attractive by gender, but by personality, much like Alyssa). They absolutely fell in love with the movie and it really seemed to connect with it. I remember telling them, "keep in mind, this came out in the mid 90s, it was way ahead of its time." And they were like "damn, that's so progressive for that time period... thank you Kevin Smith." So yeah, just thought I'd share that story. Keep up the great work

Dogma, Dogma, Dogma!!! I love Chasing Amy but Dogma is Kevin Smith at his best. Some of the greatest dialog ever.
I can’t wait till you get to J&SB Strike Back but I think Dogma is next chronologically in Smith’s career.
Best of his movies, but Dogma is still my favorite over it. You’ll see why.
