It’s the other way around. When it rises in the thin part it means pressure is dropping and bad weather may be approaching.

I have one of these and live on the Atlantic coast. I view this daily. Being it shows pressure changes ‘hyper locally’ it is fantastic to be warned of an approaching front with a cell developing.

I have had 2 for decades. This video kind of got me to find them. Both still in good shape, vodka and red food color for decades.
They are barometers I believe. If you notice them move... something is changing pretty fast.
Now I be watching this thing hanging across from my bed... I just renoticed.

I have two of these but the insides have gotten filthy with lines at previous water levels. How do I clean them? Thank you so much.

The liquid rises as the barometric pressure falls. Barometric pressure can definitely affect tides, but it does NOT create them. Tides are created by the gravitational effect of the Moon.

Agreed, if I made it sound like that, I didn’t mean to it is from the magnetic pole of the moon.

You may have explained the wonky behavior of my instrument. I have the desk top version of your instrument. If I check it against a digital barometer it is opposite what the digital says. This morning it was low in the spout and the local pressure was 29.87”. Ok. This afternoon the water is high in the spout and the pressure is 30.00”. Huh? Not a cloud in the sky. Dry desert heat. Does the rise mean a change to a lower pressure system is coming? Maybe we will get some relief from the heat? Thanks for listening.

I just got one passed down from my Mom. How much water should it have? The level of water in the bulb part is about 3/8" above the top of the neck opening and the water in the neck part is as low as it appears it can get - even with the top of the opening. Think I should try to add more?

Perhaps you can answer a question for me that has been bugging me for a long time. I can't seem to find an answer to it.
Do you need to add water to the barometer from time to time?
I haven't added water to mine since I first set it up well over 10 years ago. It still works and will dribble during bad storms, but it never seems to need extra water added to it.
I'm sure it HAS to need more water eventually.

In North Dakota it gets pretty dry, so I think I add water to mine once every two years or so.

@@BacktotheBasics101 Thanks. I figured it did, but I could never get a Yes or No answer. It was reaching the point where I think a bubble will be forced up the spout in the next big storm as the water level was getting low. I didn't want to mess with it since it was doing its job.
Thanks for the reply. I'll add water to it the next fair day we have to top it off.

@1:17 Pressure that moves the ocean tide?? Don't you know what causes the tides?

I do, just didn't want to go into a lot of detail. If people want details on what makes the tide they can go back to their high school books or look it up on the Internet. The video was an about the tide it was about a Weather barometer. Thanks for watching. Thanks for the instructive criticism.

*I do, just didn't want to go into a lot of detail.*
The only detail you gave was misleading. If you had to describe the cause of the tides with only two words, those definitely would not be "atmosphere" and "pressure", you know? And if you have the slightest doubt about it, I hope you look it up...
      *Thanks for the instructive criticism.*
You welcome, although I would deserve to be called as a nitpicker 😏

I do that a lot though I don't go into much detail and I probably should. I really need to spend more time with our videos, thank you for bringing that to my attention. And I do truly mean that.
This was one of my first videos. I would like to redo this video sometime maybe I'll do some more detail then.
Thanks for watching also if you have not yet subscribed you're very welcome to do so. I appreciate your comments.

Yes, atmospheric pressure can make tides higher or lower. Look it up.

does it matter what the pressure is when you fill it up? And where you are ,i.e., higher elevation? (I live in Boulder CO)

    • @BacktotheBasics101

      No it’s self adjust.

    • @American-Plague
      @American-Plague 5 лет назад +2

The reading you get will be relative to what the pressure was when you filled the barometer. Example: I live in Florida, known for hurricanes. The eye of a hurricane is extremely low pressure. If I filled my barometer while the eye of a hurricane was over me (in other words, when the atmospheric pressure was very low), then in the future, all readings (except for in the eye of maybe a stronger hurricane with even lower pressure) will read higher than the time I filled it. It will still show however whether the pressure is rising or falling no matter when you fill it.

The way I fill it, is just a trickle out of the faucet & some food coloring. Hey fill it up about what you see in the video. Thanks for watching hope the info helps. We make new videos every week or we try to. You would be very welcome to subscribe to the channel thanks again.

Are you positive it doesn't have a hairline fracture or pin hole in it? That's the only reason I can think of that one of these wouldn't work.
