Paul Reynolds is a genius and I wish the same. Frank is a pretty good bass player also. Ali and Mike are talented also. Mike wrote some great lyrics. 3 albums was not enough.

This was my favorite 80's band. I got to go backstage and meet em, because my friend painted a portrait of John Lennon that I had to show them, because they're also from Liverpool England! Belinda Carlisle and the Go Go's opened up for em and I got to say hello to the ladies in their dressing room, who were all combing their hair at the same time! Lol! Rock and roll Hall of Fame shouldbe's. One of my favorite bands of all time. Their music transported me as a teen to places I could only dream of. It still does.
This was the height of their career. And Paul had a breakdown. He was probably playing back to back to back concerts. Just horrible what the record company will do to you.
I saw an interview where it was like 150 shows back to back. When they weren't gigging, they were partying. That will take its toll on anyone, especially a young a man as Paul was at the time. Imagine being under 17 years old and thrust into the limelight.
@@ghoppr71 Frank said on Bands Reunited their 1st US tour, they did 157+ show back to back to back with little to no breaks. They were only supposed to be in the States for 4 weeks and they ended up staying over 6 months. But an age correction regarding Paul... he was 17 when he joined the band in early 1980. He was 20 in this concert here (his birthday is August 4, 1962). But he looked younger, so his age got misreported a lot. But he was still much younger than his bandmates, who were all 5-6 years older than him.
Obviously someone pissed him off and he retaliated. He did the same thing at US Festival 1983 about 6 months later (and was caught on camera again doing it).

After all of these years, I only became a fan just 2 years ago. Now I've been obsessed watching their videos ever since. Hope they do a reunion tour this year since the original band members are working on a new album together as I understand it.
Stephen Smith i wasn't around back then either, i'm 15 at the moment of writing this. Also (sorry, but i have to), they didn't break up in 83: Reynolds left the band in 84 and in 86 the last album was madr

Just think, had Flock of Seagulls stayed together long enough to perform at live aid in 1985, they could have out-performed queen. (Well, maybe not. But it would be close.)
The AFOS sound was mainly Paul Reynold´s guitar. Was the sound of our wonderful summers on the beaches of Guernsey 1982 and 1983. Proper seagulls included.
I love Wishing but Mike really struggles with the vocal here. He sounds out of breath, out of tune, and flat. Definitely heard him sing it better. Reno on point as always, great little guitarist who could have gone on to having a stellar career if he hadn't done too much, much to young 😟 and burnt himself out. All the constant touring I think they did over a 120 gigs in a row with hardly a day off, combined with travelling 1000s of miles across America and around the world add in all the partying and substance abuse ( Paul was a very heavy drinker from a young age to cope with it all) something had to give and Paul being only a kid had a serious breakdown. Glad to see he's ok now the 'bands reunited FOS' on RUclips is well worth a watch. After only a few hours rehearsal they were as tight as they ever had been. And Reno hadn't picked up a guitar for over 8 years. 👍😊
I think another contributing factor to the vocal performance is him dancing in place, keeping in time with his keyboard playing, but it's causing his voice to waver over and over again (in addition to the other things you mentioned).
Classic band and killer sound, but on all of the live show recordings I've watched, the main vocals sound like bad karaoke, worse on some tracks than others (Space Age Love song in particular). Must've had some studio magic to thank for the tight sound of the records. Cool document, thanks for sharing!

Actually I’ve tried to find a better live version than SALS and I can’t find one-absolutely love that song. When Paul comes to the front of the stage at 12:54 while he’s absolutely killing it and Mike smiles at him, it seems like a pinnacle moment for the band to me, but call me crazy.
