I am 41 years old single and thinking of moving to Alaska and buying acreage somewhere that is property tax free. You are very inspiring to me. Sometimes I am too scared to do it alone, but after watching you it gives me confidence. I already split my own wood in a rural mountain area and taught this to myself(reluctantly lol), and so I am confident in some ways, but not confident in other ways.
P.S. I was raised by a dad that told me to always find a man to change a battery and do everything else and shamed me for being a female that wanted to learn because I am not supposed to, and I am slowly trying to get out of that because it didn't really help me in life it only caused me to be scared of everything, lack confidence, feel dumb, and ending up asking predatory types for help that wanted to take advantage of me because my father never lived in the same state to ask for help in changing a battery or other "manly" stuff.
P.P.S. I want to learn as much as possible and be able to depend on myself you know? I personally believe every human on this earth should learn how to be like this in case they are stuck somewhere during a emergency alone or something. Its not like these societal labels always existed they are man made. Animals in the wild(both sexes) know how to survive. Female lions hunt for their whole family while the male lion guards his territory and cubs, and I think humans are more like animals in the wild since they are carnivores. If believing this makes me a evil female then that is someone else's opinion and issue not mine.
Some people live in societal boxes/labels and expect everyone else to and I just don't want to you know? If someone wants to be like that then that's their right I just don't want to live like that. I just want to be free, learn and be me! I am not hurting anyone for wanting to make it in this world and be confident in myself. You are awesome. I just want to learn about tools and everything else and be like you. Thanks!
I apologize for the lengthy rant. LOL

Hi SarahNorman. About that no property tax bit, I am in the matnauska susitna burrough and we have property taxes here, but the taxes are fairly low. My taxes for 8 acres of undeveloped land was about $400 per year till I managed to prove I'm here for good. Am 68 and I get something like a $250,000 in valuation exemption for my age. If you have a disability rating you may qualify for the exemption. $400 is about the value of a cord of seasoned mixed spruce and birch

Hi Sara! I can understand the fear of doing things alone, but from the sounds of it, you are pretty much already living this lifestyle where you're at! That is something to be very proud of. And I know what you mean about being taught to rely on others, which can leave you feeling like you lack the skills or knowledge of how to do things that you have never had the opportunity to do before. I learned a lot from watching RUclips and from the reference books that I have acquired over the years. I hope that you get to live the life you desire and get to be free as you stated to live the way you see best, and not be constrained with what society expects. Wishing you all the best! - Alone & Kenai 🤗🐺💗

I am a quilter and love your quilt you hung, every quilt has a story. My husband 1968 Sourdough got me watching your videos. Just a caution on the hung quilt, wherever the front of the quilt is touched by the wood can leave stains. Might consider draping the quilt over the wood banister with the cotton sheet touching the wood. where you have it clipped between the boards holding the quilt, I suggest you envelope the quilt front and back with the cotton fabric to give more protection for the quilt.
I have a treadle sewing machine in the cabinet too. I admire your channel and lifestyle although I too love antiques, I love more comforts 😂
I will be watching you in the future, great channel!

Hi Alone! I know I've been missing in action. I lost my Sheltie, Bode (like Brody without the R) in September of 23. I just didn't want to talk about it. A painful loss. Now I'm 'alone' like you. I love seeing you wih Kenai. So very sweet. At 62 I'm wondering if I should get another pup. Think I need to...I'm contemplating retiring soon and a dog may be the right fit to keep me active. Glad you are doing well. Give Kenai a hug from me!

I live in the middle of Scottsdale Arizona, on a wash and I get the coyotes howling outside my second story bedroom window on occasion. When they do, I get on the balcony and shine a super bright flash light in their general direction as they are always in the trees and they stop immediately and saunter off down the street. Once I saw three of them get chased by two big Javelina boars. They weren't gonna mess with the pigs...so funny to witness.

Please put vertical supports behind that hutch, too, floor to ceiling, OR, attach brackets to those big beams. In the event of a quake, that sucker could fall over backwards. After living in the PNW & CA for years, I am always conscious of how easily things can shift even with just tremors.

I live in a suburban ohio town and we have coyotes really bad here. The real estate people recently destroyed their habitat so they are everywhere the poor things. I have an 18lb cavalier and I worry about letting her out at night, so i always go out with her. When my husky was alive i'd only let her out without me when he was out too, but now she doesn't have a protector. For your sewing machine, you can make a thread hanger and sit your thread on the table. it's really easy you just take a piece of wire and put a bend in it, and secure it to something. I've got mine shoved down into a roll of packing tape lol. then you sit your thread under it and drape the thread over the wire and then thread your machine as usual. it works great! google cone thread hanger and you'll see what i mean.

I have had great success fixing plastic with super glue and baking soda. Put the pieces together use a generous amount of super glue and sprinkle baking soda on top of glued area. It will fuse it together really well and can be sanded once set. I’ve done this to repair refrigerator door shelving and it hasn’t failed at all. I would think it could work to fix your plastic spool post. Good luck!

So independent and extremely well prepared at all times it seems. Your talent and ability to make, build, redo all things in your cabin are admiral in my opinion. Especially living in a dry cabin and with little to no electrical. Do you even have a workable t.v. ? Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Even your voice is relaxing to listen to. Your preparedness in all things but especially food storage is remarkable. It seems like you always have exactly what you need to prepare your wonderful meals. You are just amazing! I have just some small spots of snow left in my garden today. Been out doing small things, like cleaning the patio furniture, raking the dead areas of the lawn, and fastening screws on the outside table. I put branches that fell down during the winter, and off cuts of the willow to continue building my dead hedge fence. It looks so rustic and nice. Glad your pup is feeling better. Coyotes are a pain and they’re everywhere nowadays! I live in town in North Alabama (my son lives in Wasilla) and coyotes regularly come up under my carport looking for stray cats.

Gloves offer a false sense of security. Almost lost my right ring finger because of a glove mandate at work. The proper type of glove is also key. I was wearing a synthetic woven type glove. It snagged on bolt and I could not get away from a rather large (1 ton) portion of a machine. As the section fell it sucked me straight to the floor consequently crushing my finger. Safety is judged by those who know very little about the task at hand most of the time.

We have lots of coyotes here in the Northern MN woods, and they drive Greta crazy! She barks and runs around, then runs back to the house barking and yipping. She and Ruger caught and killed a gopher yesterday. That's one less I have to battle with in my garden. 😂 I'm so glad Kenai it's doing better. Ruger and Greta send him face licks and tail wags!

Hi Diana! Hope you, Dan and all the pups are doing well! I am glad that Kenai doesn’t seem to pay too much attention to the coyotes or wolves. He will growl at them but doesn’t bark or get super excited like he does when he sees another dog. But then again maybe if he saw them he would. They tend to stay just out of eyesight. Glad the dogs are keeping the gophers in check for you! Kenai sends face licks and tail wags to Greta and Ruger too! 🤗🐾❤️

Oh my how in earth did you haul all that heavy furniture upstairs. You are so amazing & this area is going to be so nice once you get it sat up the way you want. Myself I would want my sewing & workshop on ground level. I can’t do stairs anymore so that is a huge issue as we age. I have 2 types of arthritis. My RA is a huge issue I’m only 62. GOD BLESS

Another great video. Ok I have to ask what is Oxtail Stew? Looks good. Be on a look out for your Spring Care Package. 📦It will arrive on May 5th. Glad Kenai is feeling better. 💖🤗🐶

Hi Carri Ann! Oxtails are just the tail of cattle. They are very rich and if cooked slowly are very tender. Though they don't have a lot of meat on them. And considering the small amount of meat on each bone, they are very costly at the store. Such a shame since they are so delicious! The soup/stew is basically just beef/vegetable soup (or stew minus the thickening). It is very tasty and hardy. I will keep my eye out for the care package. Thank you for thinking of me and Kenai. He is definitely feeling much better. 🤗🐺💗

Hi Weedeater! It is good to have another room checked off the to do list. One day I will get the walls and ceilings done too. The soup is basically just a beef/vegetable soup or stew minus the thickening but is very tasty. And so glad to have the quilt on display. Hope you are doing well and enjoying spring! 🤗🐺💗
