I hope you guys do more of these! I always watch videos on stocking ideas but it’s frustrating when the video is “these fish are cool in this sized tank” but they don’t tell you how many, what community fish they can put in as well, how many community fish fit together. It’s nice to have an actual guide on a real community size!!
My latest 40L/10gal tank has 1 honey gourami and 15 ember tetras and it's absolutely amazing! Their colors go very well together, it's almost as if they were made for this.
Basically blew a mudhole out the back of my Dungarees reading that one, wow I guess my stocking options in the back of my tank are 1 brown eel and 2 dead moss balls.
I was rewatching this video and noticed the bubbling treasure chest in the background. I remember having one of those when I was a kid and I loved it, seeing it today made me smile. Thanks!
My last 10-gallon had 2 pea puffers a pleco and a few planets. Pea puffers are awesome and they can see you through the tank walls , they are very Interactive and smart
@@kobeann9067 in general yes but a very few select can be different, I once had an absolute anomaly of a pea puffer that got along with chili rasboras and cherry shrimp.
If you do end up with a male betta, keep an eye on him when you add him to your tank for a couple hours. Bettas are all different and they could go after the other fish for a little bit and then settle down, or they could be very aggressive towards them. In my personal experience as long as the betta has enough room available to him alone he'll be fine
I find most male bettas with smaller fins are more aggressive. Maybe the ones with longer fins weigh them down? I dunno. For example my rosetails are always calm. My regular halfmoons chase everything. I just got my first Dumbo ear with some cardinal tetras and 1 snail and their doing fine.
I have a male betta in my community 10 gallon & he does great (most of the time) but he does get kind of grumpy at times but I do have a yo-yo loach that loves to put him in his place when he messes with my Corydoras 😂😂🤦🏼♀️
I’m planning on getting a female betta but my mum surprised me with a male one. I’m thinking of using one of those breeder box to put him in so the fish can first meet each other and after a while I could try and see if any of them will be aggressive when I release him and if they are I would separate them
Perfect timing! My daughter just rescued a Betta from petco yesterday. We will be adding some tank mates soon. We need to do it slowly since this is a new setup. We don't want the bioload to ramp up too quickly. #HappyMonday 🤙
I followed this similar stocking advice and did it with a dwarf gourami, 7 ember tetras and 4 coryrdoras , after a fish loss and gourami accident the tank is now finally an ember - shrimp and rams horn snail colony . Doing well at 5 months and up probably starting to balance itself out
Good morning and Happy Monday- I am in the process of cycling a 10 gallon- so this info came at the perfect time. The best part after scaping a tank is deciding what fish we want to put in there! Thanks for the ideas and have a great day!
Thank so much for this! You nailed it with the thought that you can list fish that do well in a 10 gallon and be done with it... but it’s just as important to mention which fish will actually do well TOGETHER. Great job guys!
Absolutely loved this video!! Ive been trying to put together a good combo for my 10 gallon but was afraid Id stock it too heavily! Luckily I watched this because I almost did a group of Rasboras with a group of otos or pygmy corys thinking it would be okay !
Hi guys. I'm new to the hobby and I want to tell you how great your channel and your videos are. I appreciate the content of your videos but also, the delivery is professional (great shots, no moving the camera that looks amateur and gives you a headache, correct pronunciation/clear speech, both of you are smiling and you complete each other). You are my favorite on RUclips. And being a female, I like Jason's smile ;)
Right now I have neon tetras, black skirt tetras, rosy red minnows and a mystery snail in my 10 gallon. 14 total, and yes I know it's overstocked, new and learning. I may have to get another tank though, because my minnows are food hogs, I always watch to make sure everyone gets fool though. I absolutely love my mystery snail! He's such a character I love watching him!
That is not necessarily overstocked. Just keep an eye on your water parameters and do weekly 10 - 20% water changes. Change/rinse your filter media at least once a month. Having live plants is also a good idea.
Loved all the options in the video. I was excited to hear about the clown pleco because I have one already in a 10 gallon and I’m thinking of adding a honey gourami and celestial pearl danios.
Happy Happy Monday and I love all your series on all the list for stocking options!! You have picked out some incredible fish that we can keep together and it's really helpful! Hope you all are having a happy Monday and a great week!! Thank you for sharing 🙏❤️🌿🐟🌿
Glad you did this video. I just set up a Fluval Flex 15, which has 12 gallons of swimming space, and have been considering stocking options myself. My first two choices for centerpiece fish were the same as yours, except I was thinking about two Honey gouramis because they're so small. I've been stuck on the cleanup crew for all the reasons you gave. I was thinking pygmy corys or otocinclus, but like you noted, they should be done in schools. I'm hesitant about snails because I have a population problem in my larger tank and all I can do is pull out the 10 or so I see on the glass every day. With the mystery snail, if I put in just one, am I risking another population problem if I miss the eggs? I also thought of shrimp. Amanos are good cleaners and they're fairly big. I'm sure they would work with the Honey gourami, but I've heard that some bettas will attack them. The betta is the real wild card. Get a peaceful one and you have a lot of options. Get an aggressive one, and you have almost no options. I tried twice with female bettas when I had two platys in this aquarium. The first one was constantly chasing them and one platy was dead the next morning. I exchanged it for another female and it was chasing the platy again. I took it back.
Happy Monday!! Another great video topic! 🐠 Joanna, I received my merch goodies from your store today! Thank you for the stickers and sweet note! It was so fitting that the package arrived on a Monday, making it indeed a happy Monday!! 😄😃😊
Another great snail option for a 10 gallon is the nerite snail… so fun to see where he’s at in the tank. You just need to make sure it gets food once the glass of the tank is clean.
found this out the hard way, my nerite Maximo was working on an algae bloom for so long he live a good while but when he finished up I didn’t know he needed algae wafers. broke my heart when he passed
Great video. I’ve currently got a dwarf gourami with some golden white clouds and a hill stream loach in my planted 10 gallon. Would love to see a similar video for 20 gallons in the future
Great video, I like your options. I also like the Blue Axelrodi Rasbora, the bright blue color and small size are great. They are available at your channel sponsor Flip Aquatics.
Loved the video! Would love another video like this although with a 20 gallon? I strongly agree with these stocking ideas! I have a 20 gallon for ember tetras, otocinclus and a betta.
Omg this was so informative and so helpful cause I see a lot of placement options for ten gallons and see they’re very popular for beginner tanks maybe you’ll do one for a 20 gallon high/long setup options !! Thank you 🙏🏻 .
I definitely want to get a snail in my tank solely because they're relaxing to watch as they slowly drift around the tank eating algae and leftover food like little aquatic hoovers
Lol I have been M I A the last few months and I have a lot of videos to catch up on. I saw today the gcca swap is in September and can’t wait!! This is a pretty good video I need to start up my 10 gallon back up.
I'm getting my new fish tank this Tuesday after a 15 year hiatus from the hobby and am so excited! Love your channel and it's really helped me learn/remember how to properly keep and care for your tropical aquarium. I am a vet student so I especially love the scientific approach in your videos when talking about water parameters etc. I do have a question I was hoping you could help me with: The tank I'm getting is a running 70L tank with fish and everything in it. I will also be using the same filter and hardscape as is in the tank right now. However, the current owner mentioned the tank has some algae issues because of lack of proper maintenance, and suggested I completely replace the soil because that's where he thinks the problem is. Should I do this and get rid of the 'old' soil (both aquasoil and sand, tank has been running for a year), or is this soil (and its beneficial bacteria) actually crucial in keeping the nitrogen cycle running? I will have to (after some rescaping) put the fish back the same day since I don't have a second tank. Other options would be: rinsing the soil with tap water (getting rid of the exces detriment, but killing beneficial bacteria), rinsing the soil with aquarium water, putting a layer of sand on top of the current layer. Would love to know your input!
If you can keep the filter with existing media running and all the plants and decorations submerged in water in a large plastic totes while doing the change over, changing out the substrate is usually ok. Good luck!
quick video and straight to the point. fantastic guys, thanks so much. awesome looking tanks by the way. May I ask where you guys get your driftwood from?
Just got my first tank, just filled it up and am letting it cycle, but is there an order in which to add fish? Ive heard not to dump your whole school in at once but if im looking a a centerpiece, a midlevel school and a bottom dweller, which gets put in first?
Awesome video, im setting up a 10g myself soon and think im going to go with a sparkling gourami and either either cpds or emerald rasboras with some nerite snails and maybe red cherry shrimp.
This was just the ticket! I've been searching for 'community fish combo ideas' and most of the time it's just single species stocking levels. Thanks so much for doing this it has helped massively. The only thing that's a bit frustrating is I have a 15-gallon tank and can't find many videos on this size? How much could I increase the numbers of fish I could stock do you think?
This might be a bit of an overstock but I like the idea of 3-5 sparkling gouramis 10-15 green neon rasboras 2-3 Borneo loaches and finally 5-10 ghost shrimp
nice video and thanks for the wonderful suggestions. What fish food should I use for the combination of the honey Gourami, ember tetras and the mistery snail?
Thank you so much for this video! I'm in the process of cycling a new 10 gallon tank for my preschool class and had no idea where to begin on the fish. We had originally planned on getting a 20 gallon tank and I had watched your stocking video on that size and the kids fell in love with the peacock gudgeons. Do you think one of those would be okay as a centerpiece fish in a 10 gallon with 8 ember tetras and a nerite snail?
Jason and Joanna, Another great video! Now I am looking around my house, (condo) for where I can put a 10 gallon tank! I still have my two male betta tanks. And I have a spot in my kitchen for a small indoor pond. But, where to put a 10 gallon??? 🤷♀️ Soon I will be removing furniture for tank space! LOL. 😆
Good Morning....love the short videos...many of your videos have helped me understand the cycling process, which I never completely understood. But I have a question, I have a slow leak in my 12 gal tank and will be moving everything to a 14 gal. I know it's going to, but want to move my fish with the least amount of stress. Have you done a video on this? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Seen this first time round still a great video . Anyways to my question I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a uns 90b aquarium it's 90cm x 20 x 20 as you might know I'm in the UK works out to 36x8x8 inches in US it's 45 litres roughly 12 US gallons . I was wondering if possible could you do a similar option for a 12 gallon bookshelf tank as not sure if or not dimensions would play a part on stocking . Sorry for rambling I'm scottish we talk alot
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you J/J I can now explain to the boss (wife) that the people with knowledge says yes.. I bow to your brains . I was thinking apistos with neon green rasbora and chilli rasborra .. not sure on numbers as trying to figure out filtration big enough with lower flow rate as never used sponge filters as not as big a thing in the uk
Thank you for all your videos! They've been so helpful in learning how to setup a 10 gal tank for my daughter. Overall, how many fish total would you recommend for a 10 gal? As far as the centerpiece fish go, how many fancy guppies would you recommend? Or peacock gudgeons? Would an angel fish work in this kind of tank?
I would try to follow the guidelines as closely as possible. I usually start with a couple males and 4-6 females with guppies and let them breed. Have fun!
a friend of mine set up a 10 gallon, was told to only go with around 5-6 schooling fish, so she got 5 white cloud minnows. She added a betta later on. I take it with the size difference 10 ember tetras are the equivalent to 5 minnows with bio load? im looking to set up a similar tank. but hope for one center piece, some schoolers and some corydora/clean up type fish
I keep watching this video, and I have a question. Can you mix schooling fish as in 3 neon tetras, 3 Cardinal tetras, and 3 gold tetras? Or do they have to be all the same color type like 9 neons?
Any suggestions on what I can put in my 10 gal with my 3 panda corys? My betta recently passed from old age, I've kept bettas for over 10 years so I'm curious to know what else I could branch into without overstocking. I'm not sure if a gourami or something with pandas is a bad idea.
Would this tank plan work? 10 gallons 1 female betta 6-8 black neon tetras 1 clown Pleco then rocks pebbles or sand some plants a moss ball and wood/decoration to swim through
What can i put with cherry shrimps how many in a 10gal? I wanted to do 1 honey gourami 5 each neon/ember tetra 3 albino cory. Will that work with a few cherry shrimp with them having plants and caves? Or should I keep the shrimp out and maybe add more color to the tank. Or just do small fish like neon/ember tetra with shrimp and 1 snail 3 albino cory. Or a mixture of tetras and molly and bottom feeders.

The only thing that's a bit frustrating is I have a 15-gallon tank and can't find many videos on this size? How much could I increase the numbers of fish I could stock do you think?
For the schooling options maybe by a couple fish?
Thank you! Look forward to creating our first 10 gallon tank. Any suggestions on what order to introduce the fish?
With this list it won’t matter much!
Love the video
5:35 Would a single Dwarf Snowball Pleco (L471) be okay in a 10 gal or is the Clown Pleco the only "pleco" you'd recommend for a 10 gal?
Either one would be fine!
This was a simple yet informative video. Thank you!
1:39 beautiful betta
This might be a bit of an overstock but I like the idea of 3-5 sparkling gouramis 10-15 green neon rasboras 2-3 Borneo loaches and finally 5-10 ghost shrimp
nice video and thanks for the wonderful suggestions. What fish food should I use for the combination of the honey Gourami, ember tetras and the mistery snail?
We feed our fish Northfin foods!
Thank you@@PrimeTimeAquatics
great ideas
I've had female bettas that were way more aggressive towards non-bettas than any of my males.
This is just what i need.
That would be awesome!
Had corys, Harlequin Rasboras and Glofish Danios in my 10g tank!
Jason and Joanna,
Another great video! LOL. 😆
Great things about 10 gallon tanks is they fit in lots of spaces. :-)
Cycling my 10g tank with live plants, going on day 7. Will a Betta, 6 chili Rasbora, 2 female guppies, 3 panda Cory's and 1 mystery snail be okay?
There’s a chance a full size betta might try to eat small chilis, but it could work.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

neons, dwarf corries, and a kuhli loaches in my 10.
We have the same tank and love it. You could pretty much use our 20 gallon ideas for that tank!
Have fun!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you!
What are the grey steel-coloured fish next to the ember tetras at around 3:20?
Those are Gold Tetras!
Would you put sparking gourami in 50 lowboy? I recently just got my lowboy today and I definitely want to put small fish
Definitely!
a friend of mine set up a 10 gallon, was told to only go with around 5-6 schooling fish, so she got 5 white cloud minnows. She added a betta later on. I take it with the size difference 10 ember tetras are the equivalent to 5 minnows with bio load? im looking to set up a similar tank. but hope for one center piece, some schoolers and some corydora/clean up type fish
That would work! Maybe a clown pleco too?
Nice!
I keep watching this video, and I have a question. Can you mix schooling fish as in 3 neon tetras, 3 Cardinal tetras, and 3 gold tetras? Or do they have to be all the same color type like 9 neons?
It’s better when they are the same and in a larger group - it can be a really awesome sight to see them schooling.
When adding centerpiece, schooling, and snail for 10 gallon, can they be added all at once or should the additions of each type be added a week apart?
It’s sometimes better to add them a few weeks apart to make sure the beneficial bacteria are able to accommodate the new fish.
Looking to start 6 Red Tail Rasbora, hope it goes well.
Otos are a dream fish of mine, do you think there is anyway they could work in a 10g without overstocking problems?
That can be tough since they need a decent size group.
I have a 5 gallon with a female betta and 4 ember tetras. I also have a 10 gallon with a male betta and 6 ember tetras. Both have snails, too.
That's a good combo!
Any suggestions on what I can put in my 10 gal with my 3 panda corys? My betta recently passed from old age, I've kept bettas for over 10 years so I'm curious to know what else I could branch into without overstocking. I'm not sure if a gourami or something with pandas is a bad idea.
Any of these would do just fine!
Would this tank plan work? 10 gallons 1 female betta 6-8 black neon tetras 1 clown Pleco then rocks pebbles or sand some plants a moss ball and wood/decoration to swim through
That just might work!
Here are some good examples:
