  • Running Pearce Ferry Rapid at a nasty stage in December 2009, 6 Rafts and 1 Kayak. We encountered 2 more rapids below this; Grapevine and what was being called by some "Lost Burro" at the time. We had the rafts clipped together and had 40 feet of waterline on the wave at Iceburg at the same time and Lost Burro had just cut through some chert and gave me more trouble than Lava. Truly awesome lower Canyon trip to South Cove.

Walked down and had a look at that rapid a few days ago when we took out at Pierce: it's much, much worse than it was back then.

In 2000, we took OUT at Pierce Ferry. It's incredible to think that all that was under water back then.

Love the canyon. Rafted it twice. It's canyon magic 🇺🇸

That wave out in the middle looks like a really good surf.

Savage rapid for sure. The down votes be for the mostly poor boating and annoying commentary.

Because watching them row makes me cringe. They're coming in way too far left and then giving weak ass pushes against big water. Need to turn their boats around and pull like the one guy who ran it correctly at 2:36.

This rapid looks like a lot of fun.

It got even gnarlier and now the takeout is above the rapid. Not allowed to run it according to the Parks Service, but a creature craft could do it if any inflatable could.

Living in the moment for sure. Is this run during a high level release?

    • @Michael65429
      @Michael65429 4 года назад

Not sure what the level is but this is not a high water release. This is a new rapid that formed as the lake level dropped during years of drought.

Why do they say PF is unrunnable? That looked manageable (but still a sick run)

We had to run this in 09 as our shuttle vehicles where at the South Cove ramp down river. We where on our high flow (12-14,000 cfs ?) when we ran it. I was back in 2017 and just returned from a June 2019 trip and as the river cuts a new Chanel in the chert and erodes the silt bank the rapid is in a state of constant change. It does look a lot more challenging today and the class 5 Kayakers with us in June felt it would be "narly". With the right crew and the right equipment nothing seems to be "unrunnable" these days. My feeling is people are referring to running it in 18 foot fully canyon loaded SOTAR'S when they say unrunnable. As for me I will take out at Pierce for the foreseeable future.

Watching these huge cumbersome rafts run whitewater is kind of like watching elephants dance ballet...I really miss seeing the precision and grace of a skillful whitewater kayaker.

All you have to do is go into your search bar and type graceful kayak ballet on river or something.

Why have i never seen this rapid before?

Pretty sure lees ferry put in, which most trips use, is just below lees ferry rapid, so not as many run through there…
and now the river has changed that rapid a bunch, so most avoid it….my understanding of it

Grapevine below Pearce Ferry? A different Grapevine than the one at MM 82?

@Nicholas Uber lol, it wasn't 4 years ago when I saw it last. I mean a kayak could find a line, but a raft would eat shit.
