Kenneth, Thank you for your time and taking your AV equipment so we can go along with you. Love your channel, your adventures. As John Muir said; "Going to the mountains is going home". Happy trails.
I love watching this because you are literally in my childhood backyard. My grandpa used to take us camping there, Sam A Baker, Poplar Bluff, Meramec Caverns, and Elephant Rock. We slept in the open most of the time on pine needle beds, fished for our supper and generally learned anything and everything about the animal and plant life of the area.. I miss those days like no other.
Another oldie but goodie from Dr. Ken and Bob808Knight (no known relation to me). Great comradely, excellent bushcraft and better video!!! God bless you gentlemen!!! Not only did I enjoy the video, it has inspired me to camp at least once at the Mark Twain National Forest. It’s on my overnight list for places to visit once the ranch sells and I get my van. In any event, thoroughly enjoyed the video, plan on making and using the campfire in a can and hope to meet and possibly camp with both of you gentlemen one fine day. So, take care, be safe (especially in these trying times), all my best and God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 🤠🐩👍🦌👋🎬🎥🙏
You guys have a real laid back easy going style of hiking and have a lot of fun. That is probably the best way to enjoy a walk in the woods. A lot of people take a retreat outside to get away from things and are still in a hurry. Good show guys. Live each step.
PitFireOutdoors We had a blast. One of the best camping trips ever~ Stay tuned... we're planning a public meet-up in Tennessee for May 2015. This will include a large screen shelter with fireplace .... in case there is bad weather.
Wow! Another great video Kenneth. I really enjoy watching the adventures that you @Bob808Knight get up to. It was hard to decide, but my favourite part was the mist on the lake Sunrise. Campfire in a can is a good idea; but over here that would still be considered an open flame, and not allowed at all during a total fire ban... I loved camo frog, he was so gorgeous. Say G'Day to Bear, I hope he doesn't mind being used as a pillow... lol Cheers & atb Shaz :-)
awesome final video ken, i can wate for the spring meet up to have another adventure ..it was just great to hike and camp with you and bob..adventures of a life time.. peace ken. ..bill
Great trip, great video and great that you made a decision to make as little impact on the environment where you were at. I am planning on going somewhere in the Ozarks this spring or fall to wonder around
I'm always learning lessons. This time we carried plenty of water, because we didn't know if we could easily access water from the cliffs (where we wanted to camp). We didn't know that we would be camping on a beautiful creekr. Don't know if you've seen my video on how to survive getting lost (from a couple years ago), but every time I've been disoriented / lost .... its because I didn't do one or more of the things mentioned in the video. Always have map and compass.
Looks like you and Bob had a really good time. I haven't been to Mark Twain yet, after looking at this vid it reminds me some of BSF. where I am particularly fond of. I may have to look into it. Thanks Ken! enjoyed it.
Hi Ken, happy trails. I once sprained my ankle on rocks like these. Now I am totally spooked by rock trails. Bobs tent setup looks pretty good . I think your eating situation here is very modern and tasty looking. Misty mornings are great and when the sun is out time for breakfast!
disco07 uppps; its not good to sprain your ankle. I stubbed my toe and it was sore the entire hike back to the car. When I took my boots off, I discovered that it was black and blue and will probably lose the nail. Sure glad that I didn't sprain my ankle. We had an awesome time and the scenery was spectacular. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment, my friend. ATB.... ken
So glad to see you on the Ozark Trail, Mark Twain Forest and on the Buffalo River. I live in NW Arkansas and am partial to "our neck of the woods." Thanks for showcasing our area. Too many RUclips videos on camping up north in the snow. Spring and Fall down here in the South can't be beat IMHO. "Y'all come back now, ya hear?!"
+Larry Hampton Thanks Larry. We will be back.... Arkansas is an awesome State with many areas for excellent camping... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours' ....ken
+KennethKramm And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours in return. To avoid confusion among your readers, the Ozarks run through both Arkansas and Missouri. In Arkansas we have the Ozark Highlands Trail, Mizzu has the Ozark Trail in this video. The US govn't is currently working to extent the Ozark Trail in MO down to join with the Trails in AR. We hillbillies tend to ignore the state line and enjoy the entire area. The Mark Twain National Forest is all in MO, and the Buffalo River, the nation's first National River, is entirely in AR. So y'all come visit us when you can. Thanks for letting me get a plug in for the Ozarks, Ken!
Enjoyed very much Ken, beautiful location and what a team you and Bob are, very good advice with the risks of fast rising rivers, that isn't easy rock walking a rivers edge, I have seen here in the UK the incredible pace at which rivers can rise in the north of England, brilliant video Ken :)
***** Thanks Frederick. We thought about a warning system with tin cans and strings to use a warning system, which would be trigger by as little a one centimeter rise in water level....
I'd love to hike there someday, I also have the thermaRest 0.5R and sleep like a baby even on hard rocks when I was just in Strathcona Provincial Park for 4 weeks. ..Enjoyed your video like always Ken.
After the military I was a homeless travellar and than just backpacked around the country. I alway threw a Thermarest mat down under my USGI bivy and threw my Kelty Cosmic 20° inside and used my pack, usually a Kelty Redwing 50 or my jacket as a pillow (gotta sleep ON your pack in cities). And just slept like that even in storms and snow. In rain and snow I threw a pancho over my pack and maybe put a tarp below me and my pack. Since the military Ive always used an "iso mat"
Bushcraft Adventures France Thanks. The sheath that came with the knife broke, so I'm using one that was made (as an emergency substitute). It has been replaced.... Thanks for watching and commenting. ATB, Ken
Hey Kenneth, love your videos and bob808knight y'all are so down to earth. I will start making videos of backing Louisiana swamps if there's any advice you can pass along will be great thanks, might try to make one of y'all bushcraft meet ups sometime.
Great Video guys, Gosh Ken,I knew you was the kind of friend a guy needs but please only use your powers for good, LOL Also I was wondering if that snake "left no trace"............ of that frog
Great trip Ken. Thanks for letting us go along with you. Just curious about how Bob. How did he sleep on the rock? I've had some bad experiences sleeping on slopes. Makes for a long night.lol. Thanks for sharing. Atb. Robert
Great video guys. The tent staked on the rocks pretty cool. I saw the dam in back, do they not open the sluce gates and let water out? I really liked the prisim look in the light through the trees. Thanks again. atb
Thanks Opal. Bob did some ingenious engineering to get the tent to work. Yep, the dam behind us was concerning. We checked it out thoroughly before camping....but it was still concerning. You know, I got up before sunrise and took pictures from the lake and walked the river, it was spectacular. And Bob stayed in his tent until a few hours after sunrise. When he got out of the tent and he saw the prism of light through the trees. Simply awesome. It goes to show, that sometimes, staying in your shelter until after sunrise and simply being quiet .... observing nature....results in the the best view. ATB, Ken
Hey Ken I have seen you make camp fire close to a lake haaa. I liked Bobs camp fire in a can. Awesome camp spend in good company. Tell Bob to eat porridge Oaks instead of chocolate in the mornings, it will give him longer lasting fuel reserves. Peace Bro Sandy
Wiltshire Man Yep, Sandy. Big Smile.... I've used existing campfire scars / rings next to lakes (these fire areas were made by previous campers.) The US Forest Service / LNT principles provide two recommendations 1) campfires should be at least 100 feet from water source (to avoid scaring the land/rocks/vegetation , water pollution) and 2) use existing fire rings, when available. So, in situations where previous campers, have made fires next to lakes, I try to use the existing fire location -- particularly if the area is not pristine. This reduces the human impact on the land. In the section of the Ozark Trail where we camped there was very little evidence of human activity: no trash; no side trails; just pure / raw nature.... with awesome vegetation and wildlife! I've never seen an area as beautiful as this before. We wanted to impact the environment as little as possible. Smiling, Bob ate oatmeal after drinking hot chocolate. My breakfast was the fresh air and scenery of a two hour walking meditation. Then oatmeal before hiking back to the cars. Peace, Ken
Ade Larsen Ade, your'e right on target, about regulations, such as where campfires should be placed. My experience is that governmental regulations don't consider local circumstances. To me, the best approach is to "do what makes sense" in the local situation. And at the same time consider considering legal or governmental guidelines.
I'm glad to see you decided to carry extra water this time. Call me a sissy, but I never head out on the Ozark Trail without 2 liters of water. Missouri has some of the best conservation areas of any state I've ever lived in. In fact, I chose to retire in Missouri because of this. We only have to hike two miles to reach the back area of a tract in Phelps County. You guys sure look like you enjoyed your time on the Ozark Trail!
Good, entertaining, informative video. Side note: Did some hiking myself this weekend on Cross Timbers Trail (6 miles in, 6 miles out or so). Tried sleeping in a hammock for the first time, and I tell you I will never sleep in a tent again if I can help it. No rain and no need for bug net or tarp, but slept under the open stars and it was very comfortable. The hammock and straps are all of 1 to 1 1/2 lb's, so a real weight savings. I did carry a lot of water, however (5 liters), so I need to work on that. All the streams were dry and I did not want to go down to the lake edge foliage. Working on getting my pack and gear weight down, and sans water, it's probably around 10 to 12 lbs. or so. I do want to ask about clothes, cotton vs wool. Do you wear mostly the latter? Because, it seemed like a hot day in the video and no one seemed to be sweating too much.
"We don't hurt little snakes." Good thing! In Missouri, all snakes, even venomous ones, are protected under the state's Wildlife Code. Only exceptions allowed are to protect yourself, or your pets or livestock, from imminent danger. IE, if a venomous snake is going to strike and you can't easily evade, then you can protect yourself. Great video! Loved the "engineering" LOL! Come back to my home state often. We have LOTS of beautiful parks and state forests as well as huge tracts of the Mark Twain National Forest.
pops wrench Thanks. It is reminiscent of the Spontoon, which was popular 100+ years ago. However, my version is safer because the blade is covered with a sheath.
Great video Ken. I am not familiar with the no fire on the water that Bob mentioned. Is that a local ordinance? You have got to show me how you do the snap pack thing. Thanks
Magnus Dominus The US Forest Service recommends camp fires be at least 100 feet from water sources to prevent scaring of fragile ecosystems and contamination of water with nutrients ... which could impact aquatic organisms.
Harry Mcleod Thanks Harry. Bob, Billy Joe and I are in the early stages of planning another meet up (May 2015). It will be open for others to join. We'll officially announce it when the details have been established. Stay tuned for adventure. ATB, Ken
If you had been off the creek could you have had a campfire? Near me here in MD and PA there are places with designated tent sites you reserve. What are the rules and regs about tent camping off trails etc? Really enjoyed the video guys! Thanks a bunch!
sjohnson1776 In most US National Forest,s it is permissible to camp away from traditional campgrounds, if you follow "Leave No Trace Principles." Usually this mean low impact camping, away from water sources, camping on durable surfaces (not vegetation). It is permissible to have campfires that leave no fire scars... not on rocks or on vegetation. Check the local regulations in your area. State Parks in the US have different regulations and dispersed camping, like we did, is usually not permitted.
I don't know how a larger guy like Bob can be comfortable in those little tents. I'm about his size, probably a little heavier, have a bad back, and I've tried a couple times to sleep in those small one man tents and I can't sleep at night and I'm very restless. I get up in the morning full of pain. Is this something you have to get used to? I've used an army foam mat and insulated bubble-wrap but it doesn't provide much cushioning. The hammock looks like it would be much more comfortable.
The rock he slept on had a shape that conform to his body, he said... and the pine needle bad made it comfortable (he says). But so was my hammock.... Thanks for watching and commenting, Nathan.
Wish I could camp with you guys some time, do you go camping so that anyone can join you? And perhaps learn something. Great video as allways bobs tent setup sure was creative! -Carl
We'd love to have you join the fun. Bob and I held two public "Bushcraft Meetups." The next one is planned for May 2015. Stay tuned for additional information.
I'll have to plan a trip from Sweden but it will be worth it! Thank you for your videos they really motivate me exercise my leg so i can get better asap and enjoy nature! -Carl
I suggest looking a a map of Crane Lake. We hiked a trail, but I don't remember if it had a name. We walked from the parking toward the cliffs. See the narrative in the video.
Folks, Mark Twain National Forest (or any forest in Missouri) is super dense and thick, hence Ken and Bob were sleeping on rocks on a creek. Bear this in mind. I should know. I live on 26 acres of woodland right outside of Mark Twain National Forest and Meremec State Park.
@nick sweeney Its not that there are no tree's, quite the contrary, there are too many tree's! So many that none of them have the resources to become large, so the entire forest has the consistency of a jungle.
Kenneth, Liked your video on Padre Island. Camped their in 1970 with basically Bob Knights gear minus the Jet boil stove. Slept in the bushes next to the Port Isabel light house when Port Isabel was a one light town with a couple of shrimp boaters. Headed out to the beaches the next day and spent a week on the beach the week between Christmas and New years then hitchiked back to Kansas City for my senior year of high school. Oh so little money, so little gear. so much fun. The people in Texas were just wonderful, open and so kind.
Is there a local bylaw that prevents you from having a fire by the river? I'd have thought it would make more sense to have a fire near the river, any sparks are easily extinguished. As for the frog, you should have put on your best French accent, it would hop away as fast as its legs would carry it. 😛
Green Silver Fires by rivers are not recommended by the Forest Service, due to environmental impact / land/rock scaring/vegetation damage. Nutrient changes in the water impacting aquatic organisms. This was a nearly pristine area with no trash, no side trails, beautiful vegetation. The following is a quote from the US Forest Service: "Use existing fire rings if they exist. Minimize the scarring of new rocks, soil, and plants by using existing fire rings. Select a site that is not in a meadow or clearing, that is not next to a tree with low overhanging branches, that is at least 100 feet from any water source to protect fragile vegetation."
+James Morrison - I'm 6'3" and fit well in the tent, but my oversize bag sometimes rubs against the back of the tent if I'm not careful. I'm about 195 lbs and there is plenty of room for my gear and a medium sized dog.
Awesome tent setup by Bob. You two make a great team out there. Love it. Cheers, Marc
Scouting Free Thanks Marc. We had a blast!
I just came across you guys. I gotta tell ya, this is great. Not only informative, but entertaining as well, without even trying. Thanks for the help.
Thank u for taking me along on the hike!!! Beautiful sights and sounds!!! Brings back memories of my 460 mile hike on the A.T. Trail, thank you both

Great trip Ken, it was very cool to watch all you guys on the same trip and your different views and vids. thanks for sharing, really enjoyed it.

Missouri has some of the best conservation areas of any state I've ever lived in. In fact, I chose to retire in Missouri because of this. We only have to hike two miles to reach the back area of a tract in Phelps County. You guys sure look like you enjoyed your time on the Ozark Trail!
Sandy Lewis Big smile. We learned from experience. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. ATB, Ken
Ron Johnson Missouri is beautiful. We will be back! ATB, Ken
hey , BOMBA , love your spear :)
pops wrench Thanks.
Beautiful area! Love Bobs ingenuity, he's the MacGyver of the woods. 15:00 Magic tricks!!! Good times guys! What video editing software do you use?
Bob has fantastic engineering skills. It's fun to watching him make things work... I'm using Final Cut pro X.
I have the same tent as Bob, and it can't be beat for the price! I take it kayak camping with me due to its small pack-up size.
Darque Ronin Awesome! I purchased the same tent at Bob's recommendation.
incredibly beautiful landscape.boaaaaaahhhh, would like to be a part of the team...
thanks for sharing this adventure with us
greetings
harry
Harry Mcleod Thanks Harry. Bob, Billy Joe and I are in the early stages of planning another meet up (May 2015). It will be open for others to join. We'll officially announce it when the details have been established. Stay tuned for adventure. ATB, Ken

i will ken,it's been a long time that I was in the United States.....
Thanks!!!!
Looks like a lovely trail. Why aren't you allowed to make a fire near a lake or stream?
-Carl
You made a spontoon. tres retro :3
Yep, my walking stick/spear is reminiscent of a spontoon. Thanks of noticing.
What is the mummy bags temp rating and what was the overnight temp?
What trail is this and can you give me a map of it. Keep up the good work great video. Thank you
I don't remember the name. Sorry.
I suggest looking a a map of Crane Lake. We hiked a trail, but I don't remember if it had a name. We walked from the parking toward the cliffs. See the narrative in the video.
Is there any way you can ask the other guy.
Its not always so dense that you can't sleep in it or hike through the woods. I live in Taney County.
@nick sweeney Its not that there are no tree's, quite the contrary, there are too many tree's! So many that none of them have the resources to become large, so the entire forest has the consistency of a jungle.
Snap!! - Awesome
Vx777infonet Thanks!
How long did the campfire in a can last? It's a great idea I'm definitely making one for my next trip
Travis Dunn This can burned about 2 hours. Enjoy using it!
Campfire in a Can! Does Bob have a video on how to make this?
seattwa Check his channel. I believe he does...
KennethKramm Yes. Thanks Kenneth, Bob sent me the link :-} Cool stuff!
Ken Kramm, the Mr. Rogers of the forest...
Hi I was just wondering what kind of pack kenn was using
DrMDC Thanks for asking. I'm using an REI Flash 50. Great pack that I've used for several years. It is no longer available, however.
ok thanks for responding
ken what kind of pack is that?
Hey Ken! How come you got a spear and ol' Bob just gets a stick?
Hey Ken, mind if I use you're camp-breaking technique in a video? I'll say I learned it from you!
+Nate Buker Yes, go for it! Thank for asking....
Hi Ken.
I have spent 30 years camping in the Ozarks....but why pitch a tent on a ROCK.
There are no rocks where I live in Texas, so it was a challenge. Also, the view was spectacular!
Kenneth,
Liked your video on Padre Island. Camped their in 1970 with basically Bob Knights gear
minus the Jet boil stove.
The people in Texas were just wonderful, open and so kind.
uscgalpha91 Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Padre Island is a great place to camp on the beach...
Nice landscape which I have not been to Arkansas.
Thanks DrDennis
Full of experience ! where are you live ?
l want to go camp with you. haha
Nice!
Larry Vickery Thanks, Larry!
Of all the thing i want to learn from ya, the best would be how to pack up stuff by snapping fingers lol.
+Trung Le Smiling. Join me on a camping trip and you will see the magic!
Your campsite looks like Lone Survivor could have been filmed there.
why can't you make a fire near a river or lake ken
can someone 6'3" fit in that tent
+James Morrison - I'm 6'3" and fit well in the tent, but my oversize bag sometimes rubs against the back of the tent if I'm not careful. I'm about 195 lbs and there is plenty of room for my gear and a medium sized dog.
good Living!
+Sylvester Givens Thanks!
Can you shoot out there?
during hunting season
i like the magic hahaha...
azim axim Thanks. Big smile!
