Great. Brings back memories of those days. I just received my 75 year Veteran Pin from the Boy Scouts so have done all this, with home-made gear, plus more modern stuff. But always had the Scouts do it the old way, just so they know how. Even camped on the Island, on Blackpool harbor in England, that Lord Baden Powell took his first troop to, on the 50th Birthday of his organization. Used old designs on home-made patches and met one of his two surviving Scouts there. He saw my troop, stopped, and sat on a stool and talked to us over an hour. We were just a hundred feet from their first camping site, where a display of their tents was set up. Boys Life photographer was there and moved us down to the display site. Boys sat in a circle, with me standing near the camp fire, and telling the story of how he started Scouting. Brrrrr Chills up my spine!
Once again I find myself watching haversack/bedroll camping vids. And once again, I find myself going to this gentleman's great videos on the subject. The knowledge he imparts, his obvious love of this stuff, and his simple ways just hit the spot. Once again, thank you, sir for making this cold Sunday morning with a coffee enjoyable.
This video made me think of my parents and my father, camping as a kid. Something about it that you never forget. And the same I do with my son. Brought a tear to my eye. Thank you

Am. I glad I watched this video. My love for camping will never go away. Even now that I am almost sixty I still dream of doing it again somehow, one day. This is a great video. It reminds me of the happiness camping brings to me. Thank you for making it.
Thank you for sharing those truly incredible photographs of your father particularly those of him and his friends in scouting in 1920's. I myself currently am a ASM in the Silicone valley council. Seeing those photos sure made my day and I am going to share those with the boys at tomorrow's meeting.
This video is the key to a good life. Every 10 seconds you see a good decision whether it be in camping or living or presentation. I think this man has the best life. I want to type so so much more but it was creepy so I had to delete it. But an inspiration to all outdoorsmen and animals who love every moment of life. And he knows to bring hot chocolate. And other fun things I bet
Its been half a year since i saw this video. Ive been looking for it since April this year. And now that ive found it, it resparked my interests in bushcraft. As always, incredible work, Ken. Wish you and your community the best of the best.
My dad used to play the mouth harp and harmonica. It ain’t gonna rain no more was one of his favorite songs to play. Us kids would sing along and dance to the music. Thanks for the memories 😊❤
My dad used to sing the same song when we were little campers. great vid. I wish more parents would take their kids out like that, instead of setting such boundaries that even dirt can't get in.

Great video, I'm glad that I found it. I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s camping like this in Michigan. I started primitive camping again a few years ago. One thing I've noticed is that there are a heck of a lot more ticks than there used to.

Im subbed. Im going to be 64 years old soon. Im ex military. I still do military hikes and practice survival at least once a week for the lsst 32 years. I have a 19.8 pound backpack that I made 61 days with. Im in south central Louisiana (Cajun country) which is hurricane prone. Been in 18 hurricanes and lost everything I had 3 times. In 2 hurricanes in Texas it was a month and a half before we got power back. There is a breaking point on being resilliant....im almost there. I enjoy going out and practicing with my equipment. Very self rewarding. Charles
Well done. I think a lot more people that will appreciate the simplicity of enjoying the outdoors if they're not worrying about 'gear up' for the outdoors.
I've gotta say.... Last year I came across your video of stealth camping and I really, really enjoyed it. I watched a few more vids and before I knew it, I'd been inspired to reconnect with nature, as a child and teen, I loved being in the hills (born and raised in W.V.) but as time went by and I became a family man with a job and life in general, I'd lost touch with nature. I hadn't been in the hills in 2 decades. Watching your videos inspired me to "get back"..... Since watching your videos, I spend one day every week in the hills, my wife and children go with me, things I'd learned about nature And surviving in the hills slowly started coming back to me and I began teaching my family survival skills and little tips and tricks of being efficient and self sufficient in the hills, we enjoy family time hiking, cooking, building fires, finding animal tracks and just being out away from the hustle of everyday life while we're in the hills. Thank you
+Chris Workman Hi Chris. Thanks for watching and commenting on my videos. Fantastic that they have inspired you and your family to reconnect with nature. ...ken

Amazing, loved this video, it was exactly what i was looking for! A simple way of camping and loved the sewing of the cotton sheet in the wool blanket, very smart as i've thought myself as well how to make the wool blanket feel less itchy! Great resourcefulness is best and I've loved you sharing this as there is so much outdoor equipment these days but I was looking for something more simple. Thanks!
I bet that stew was very tasty! Only thing I woulda done different, was chuck a clove of garlic in! :) Thanks for sharing a blast from the not so distant past, something that's forgotten by nearly everyone.
I loved your video! That sure is the life, watching the camp fire, going to sleep looking at the stars, and being woken by bird song. I don't want any more out of life than that. That's true wealth. Thanks for the video, and peace to you also.
I can find no flaw in your teachings, it's just like I learned at the feet of my father and grandfather. It's simple yet effective. The one thing I will comment on is your speech pattern. It's flows like someone who is trying to act but is shy of the camera. On most people it would have turned we away but for you it seems to work. I enjoyed this video immensely and look forward to watching more.

Oh no, I know people used to camp out like that a lot back in the day, but no way I'd ever prefer to camp like that over how we do it now. One of the few things I don't miss about the good olden days.
Honestly this video was very soothing, a perfect balm for a country boy feeling stressed out by social life, living out in the city, and working an office job while longing to be out in the woods. Thank you!
i really just love everything about this human and his camping and the family stories, so calming and peaceful and compassionate with nature.... le sigh .

I wish this guy was my grandpa to be 100% honest. My grandfather on my Dad’s side of the family passed away after having a massive stroke, and this guy almost has the same positive energy as him. 🙂
You just reminded me of something that I experienced , I woke up in the night sometime and there was a heard of dear around me and one was standing over me . I didn't move as it slowly crossed over and when I awoke they were gone . True story . Thanks. I forgot that for decades .
nice trip to the minimalist old school... I have been experimenting this too, since I am kind of sick of wet gore-tex jackets & Co., where it is sound to re-issue the ideas of the past, why not? (my main concern is with sustainability, and most of the time less is much more!)
I grew up camping, and this video is right on. This is the one of many good ways to camp. Very secure, very friendly, very clean. Of course there are other videos focussed on more survivalistic approaches to finding sources of water food making shelters etc, but this is actually focussed on simple camping techniques and solutions that have worked in the days when the world was more in touch with nature. This keeps the tradition alive in my opinion.
+Olando M Hi Olando. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Yes, other folks focus on "survival." I prefer to camp the way I remember doing it and spend time with nature ... the real reason for being there. ATB, Ken
the best 46 min i have had all day ken, i watched it twice..lol. i will say you really got me interested , we need to do this style of camping some day..we all learned together at the spring meet, these are times i will always remember .. and a great big thanks my friend for the mention of the #survivormanvideocontest with your shout out we have a better chance of getting one of us bushcraft brothers in there.. i think im going to watch again , you really put a great video out ken.. take care and be safe on your trip.. ..bill
Ken, thanks so much for sharing your memories and demonstrating how simply one can enjoy the great outdoors. I smile from ear to ear every time I watch your videos. Dad was a country boy and although he didn't have camping skills to pass on to us kids, we did learn how to lay out a proper garden. Grandpa was famous county-wide for his straight furrows, here in central Indiana. God bless you and yours! I'll keep watching. :) -tom
+Tom Wilson Memores are important Tom. Each of us has experience, handed to us from the previous generation and we can share this wisdom with the next. I pet Grandpa has many lessons to teach. Take are, my friend. ....ken
it is nice to someone to confirm about cooking and the eggs My son born in the early 80s jump up and down screaming if you allow eggs out more then two hours in room temp the eggs MOST BE thrown away my grandmother keep eggs up to 90 days in their root ceiler but she said a few times that she run out of eggs and flour for baking pies cake breads to sale to rail road staff going to Miami
Still even til this day one of my favorite videos from Mr.Kramm. Here he demonstrates traditional methods of scout life in the outdoors. Everyone should be so lucky to get out often to do such a simple overnight in the woods with a little camp stew before bed and a nice one pot breakfast the next morning. Just add some camp coffee for me. This presents certainly worth viewing again every of often. Thanks for sharing this experience. - Tennessee Smoky
Breadbag is a perfect idea, I use an m44 Brotbeutel. It doesn't carry near as much as that gas mask haversack but it has enough room and more for 5 c's. Another thing in common that I've seen multiple times between bush crafters/woodsmen is the fire kit, and how it is a gift or passed down. Mine was given to my uncle who got it from a close friend who was native American, and the nostalgic feeling is real, every time a fire is made using it.
4:00 I love that song you played! I especially like that it has a part of the tongue twister _"How much wood could a woodchuck chuck"_ because that's the one tongue twister I can do and have done many times throughout my years of knowing it. I still say it on occasion these days.
This is a great video , I love it when my grandpa talks about camping in his youth and uncles talk about camping with him . Lot has changed in time .Again great video .
My goodness how thing's have changed when it comes to camping :-) No flash tent, no temp rated sleeping bag, no portable gas stove and all the other trinkets and modcon's we carry these day's. Nice to see someone out there is showing us how it can be done without busting the bank. (and not being an idiot about it like some other post's I have seen) On a separate note I remember hearing stories from my father's uncles about how they used to live like this for month's at a time when time's were tough back in the 1930's & 1940's and they had to walk to find work.
Great vid! I grew up with military surplus items, too. My dad bought a canvas military surplus tent and pitched it in the back yard for us kids to play in. He bought a truck camper that we actually camped in a few times. Those times are the best memories of time spent with my dad. :)

Its easy when you are dry...when you are piss wet through for weeks at a time your old time gear is not great.
It good to learn survival at every level and gather the best of all time eras
Honestly this video was very soothing, a perfect balm for a country boy feeling stressed out by social life, living out in the city, and working an office job while longing to be out in the woods. Thank you!
"Back when I was a kid ..." is my always my favorite part!
:-)
i really just love everything about this human and his camping and the family stories, so calming and peaceful and compassionate with nature.... le sigh .
Really enjoy your informative, wonderful, well presented videos....thanks very much for making them..
Chris
You're welcome Chris. ...ken
9 years after ... I'm watching the video ...Time Travel😅
I see this as an absolute Win😂❤
Thank you for bringing back memories of my childhood. Loved that song...❤
Thank you for watching and commenting…. Means a lot to me
The aussies call their similar equipment " mathilda" , when they go on a hke. They call it waltzing mathilda and waltzing means hiking...
Dagobert1234 Thankw for the info...
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
@@Christopherjamesmurphy21 Yes, Les Hiddens was that guy's name ....the show Was called Bushtucker Man and he always carried a humungous pistol crossssdraw style for crocodiles wild hogs, etc. That was a great show
Awesome videos you remind me so much of my Dad. 65 and still hiking and enjoying the outdoors
Thanks@! much appreciated my friend.... have fun and stay tuned for adventure ...
I wish this guy was my grandpa to be 100% honest. My grandfather on my Dad’s side of the family passed away after having a massive stroke, and this guy almost has the same positive energy as him. 🙂
this is exactly what I'd like to do. The camping i do is essentially just "drinking outside, with tents."
Sub'd
***** I agree! I just feels so "controlled" as far as designated camp sites, reservations, and gas stations near by. This is what I want to do :)
I like the commentary with the wide angle view and sped up video to quickly explain the bedroll.
I have a feroccium rod that for if my life depended on it cudnt start a fire even if the tinder was soaking with gasoline.. good video
ATB, Ken
the best 46 min i have had all day ken, i watched it twice..lol. i will say you really got me interested , we need to do this style of camping some day..we all learned together at the spring meet, these are times i will always remember ..

billy joe denny Thanks Billy Joe. Can't wait for the meet!!!
A simple nature friendly life style I love!
Great video Kenneth, I remember the canvas tarps on the ground too when I was a boyscout :-) Cheers, Marc
Scouting Free Thanks Marc
This is the loveliest video on camping that i ever did see, in every aspect! I realy enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing a part of your own history.
i have a 1930's british boys annual book, which details tips for hiking and equipment.... its great, what a difference !
+Gav Tatu Awesome. I would be interested in the name of the book and would like to read it. Thanks for watching and commenting. ....ken
KennethKramm its in my loft somewhere mate, i shall look it out for you !
i have sent you a message mate.
What is the name of the book? I'd love to read it.

Greetings, fellow old fart ! Back in the '50s we knew how to camp.
+James teffertiller I'm attempting to re-live what I didn't finish in the 50s. Thanks for watching and commenting.
+KennethKramm I hear ya! I'm doing the same.
Superb video Ken, can tell a lot of work went into this and I thoroughly enjoyed the stories you had to share ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors Thank you, my friend. Peace ~
Absolutely charming man. What a gift to watch!
Thank you for the egg care trick... Guys like you are why I watch videos!
Mr. Kenneth this is the first video of yours I have watched. Let me say it was a pleasure to watch. You sir are a delight to watch & an inspiration.
Thnx for taking us camping with you, what a good time.😊
Breadbag is a perfect idea, I use an m44 Brotbeutel.
I still say it on occasion these days.
i dig your videos this is how i sleep every night theres great freedom in hoboing
I glad somebody stills like camping the old way. I enjoy this style of camping
This is a great video , I love it when my grandpa talks about camping in his youth and uncles talk about camping with him . Lot has changed in time .Again great video .
coyote238 Thank you my friend....
Well done Ken for mastering flint and steel!
Bishop Howells Thanks.... only with the help of youtube friends..
My goodness how thing's have changed when it comes to camping :-) No flash tent, no temp rated sleeping bag, no portable gas stove and all the other trinkets and modcon's we carry these day's. Nice to see someone out there is showing us how it can be done without busting the bank. (and not being an idiot about it like some other post's I have seen)
On a separate note I remember hearing stories from my father's uncles about how they used to live like this for month's at a time when time's were tough back in the 1930's & 1940's and they had to walk to find work.
Simply fantastic! The Mister Rogers of bushcraft.
Al Mollitor Thanks. Big smile....
Less is more, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I just learned that you don't need so much gear to survive. Thank you .
This was so wholesome and precious
I really admire your videos, you seem to have the ability to enjoy the happy moments of life and even share them with us. Thank you!
Beowulf Agate Thanks!
After watching this I feel like I just hung out with my uncle again. He was awesome. Thanks for reminding me
Great vid! I grew up with military surplus items, too. My dad bought a canvas military surplus tent and pitched it in the back yard for us kids to play in. He bought a truck camper that we actually camped in a few times. Those times are the best memories of time spent with my dad. :)
PuffyCatTail Thanks for mentioning camping experience with your dad. The best memories...
Your voice is laden with love. Thank you for your sharings.
