- On this trip Sheba and I explore the Paddy Creek Wilderness area of the Mark Twain National Forest. 2 Days in extreme heat but it was worth it. Numerous creek crossings and we met some really nice people.

my family and friends have been going to Paddy since the late 1960s,
I love it there so much that the wife and i moved to little Falcon, MO,
about 45 minutes from Paddy.
I am decendant from the Patty family. Our kin were all over this area.
Sheba is a very good hiking companion. Really enjoyed this hike. Beautiful creek crossings and tree covered trails - very helpful in extreme heat. Well done and thanks for sharing!
Sheba is an awesome companion on and off the trail. The hike was great and beautiful. Thanks for the kind comment and for watching.
Those plants look like some kind of palmetto. They're common in Louisiana where I'm from. I've been in KC for 11 years and those are the first ones I've seen in Missouri. I guess the Ozarks are the northern extent of their range, if that's what they are. Great video, by the way. I'm planning a trip down that way sometime this fall and this was really helpful.
Glad it was helpful, most people think those are Yuca plants.
@@CavemanOutdoorsMissouri Yucca is probably correct. I think palmettos are limited to the subtropical areas further south. One thing I've noticed since moving to Missouri is that the trees and plant life change dramatically once you get to the Ozarks or further north.
A brave man going through the ozarks in the summer!
I love it
I like it. You couldn't wait! I know how you feel! The Mark Twain National Forest is a beautiful area. Great job taking the map. The waterfall was neat. You are definitely in good shape. It is very difficult to hike in the extreme heat. This is what hiking is all about! Real stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks brother I really appreciate it. It was worth every drop of sweat
Awesome trip. I don't even hike that many miles in a day lol. A detailed map is always a plus. Great way to spend your time off. Thanks for sharing. -Eric
I do like to cover some miles lol. The map is always a good idea in these wilderness areas. It was a great time. Thanks for watching Eric
Great video. Watch all the way. Thank you. I’m a solo guy too
Thanks a lot
Nice location. Wilderness areas are awesome. Beautiful. And of course it was a pleasure to see Sheba again. Glad you brought a detailed too map (like Bob Knight brings; but sometimes loses). ATB, Ken
Yes the map came in handy even if it was a little off at times lol. The waterfalls at the end were cool and the whole trip was a pleasure. Thanks for watching and commenting Ken. You should checkout my why I RUclips video
very awesome trip Sheba did real good, age is just a number man, I don't think most teenagers could have kept up with you on that trail. Was some real big trees out there too, reminded me of Tennessee! Thanks for taking us with you and sheba.
Thanks it was a workout. And very beautiful. I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching
Sorry it took me so long to watch this one, I had to wait till I had enough time to really enjoy watching. I'm digging your new pack. 2 miles in and your hat is already off LOL I can tell it was hot out there! Looked like pretty dense woods so probably no air moving either! Sheba looked like a real trooper on the hike. Nice "trail magic" from the campground people. Don't normally have a table and bathrooms when you are backpacking, nice! The trail up along that ridge was awesome. Neat waterfall near the end of the hike. 1.5 mph is not bad in that kind of heat. Awesome hike man thanks for sharing the adventure!
Your right the start of the trail on day 2 along the ridge was awesome. The campground was actually nice for a change and the people were really nice. It was hot but well worth it. Can't wait for the next 2 weeks to go by so I can get back out. Thanks for watching and commenting
Thanks for the video. Nice looking area.
Your welcomed me and thanks for watching
Looks like a pretty area. Glad you got a smaller pack...I'm thinking High Sierra makes No Limits gear for Academy. Appears to have a goodly mix of pines and hardwoods and some nice views.
there were great views. i was wondering about the pack because they are so similar. thanks for watching
This was a lot of fun to watch Bud. I need to get over there and go through the Mark Twain forest. I am planning on hiking the Ozarks in October
You will love it, I'm doing another section of the Mark Twain next month. Thanks for watching my friend
Thanks for the hike along, it was a great hike in a neat area. Take care!
Thanks I really appreciate it. It was a great time
yes yucca .. narrow leaf yucca ,I use the stalks for a hand fire kit
+Grampaw Terry cool
Good video and good location
Thanks for watching
+Caveman Outdoors Thanks for posting! Enjoyed watching! Hike this during winter...you'll see more of the landscape. rock formations, cliffs and overhangs at elevation,..but it wont solve the poor trail markings...lol
Some great views brother ,Makes it all worth while huh .. thanks bro ..
+Grampaw Terry great place
great. I had a male for 12 years. wonder dogs!
+Dean Carder cool. She is a great companion
+Dean Carder cool. She is a great companion
Very nice video. I'm thinking about getting out there to camp a little bit with me wife, 12, and 2yr old next year.
+Kevin Anderson its a rugged trail but well worth it
Looks like the wild tiger lilies grandma used to have
Great video! You where about a week off for the cool weather.
I know right. The next weekend was perfect. Still was an awesome trip
Sheba is such a nice dog
Yes she is
Nice trip man, good job with the video. I haven't been able to find any good video of that trail either. Most of the ones I do see are all of the persons face and not the trail or views....
+John almost missed your comment. It's part of the reason I do what I do to give people an idea what these areas are like. Thanks for watching and commenting
+John thanks a lot
Great Video! It looks like you had quite an adventure! Is this the trip where you posted before you went that it looked like rain? It turned out quite the opposite. It looked like that trail magic found you at the right time! Pretty cool. I am thinking about getting a smaller pack as well. I use an 80 liter, which is fine for my week long trips, but I would like to find something smaller (and lighter!) for 2-3 day trips. Loved the video as always!
Yes this is the trip but the rain held off and it quite hot. The ice water couldn't have come at a better time. The smaller pack helped but I wasn't sure about water so I was carrying like 6 lbs of water but I drained it all both days. Really nice trail and the kicker was that the next weekend it cooled off go figure. Thanks for watching.
dense green, i can feel the Hot from here. loved every minute of this. your 16 mph on the gps is probably from a short leap over a creek.
+potatothorn both days i actually forgot to turn it on when i started out so ya it was going from camp to where i had already crossed the creek before i turned it on. Im going back on April 1st for 3 days for my birthday. i want to find that trail where i got lost and take time to checkout all the ones i passed last time, thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing!
hey no problem thanks for watching
fun video to watch , some of the things you comment on sounds like something i would say , thanks for sharing !
thanks for commenting and for the sub. i really appreciate it
those are yucca plants that Is an old house place. People use to plant those for decorations
+Jacob Elliott Thanks Jacob, I thought that's what they were. thanks for watching
+Caveman Outdoors "yucca" refers to a genus of plants- but most people call all of the individual species yuccas, except for maybe Joshua Trees. So when you see another one that looks kinda different, it's still a yucca.
My Buddy and I hiked the North loop, at the Slabtown Trail marker. We wanted to do the 10 mile loop. ended up "miss oriented"; hiked 11.98 miles, two hours of which, was conducted in the dark by flash light; trying to locate the trail markers. The horse trails were misleading, some faded out, disappeared near the low areas by the little Paddy creek. Up on the ridgeline, we made a turn, on compass Azimuth, North east, next to a Cement "Ring" in the woods. We continued on this trail until we came to a rocky over hang, over watching the Big Paddy creek. Some how, this trail was leading us South west....instead of North east. Wrong direction for us. So.....We busted brush, down a ridgeline to the Big Paddy creek, near Anderson Hollow. Down to the creek bed itself. How we got off the correct trail was a mystery to us. So we chose to use a obvious terrain feature to navigate by. Daylight was fading, and we were prepared for an over night stay, but, instead we persisted in finding our way and eventually found our way out using Big Paddy creek as a navigational tool in "Zero visibility". The creek itself had flood damage, sand bars, rocky areas, sunken in watering holes, scrub bushes, stickers, brambles, fences, wire, beaver damaged punjee sticks, dead fall, and log jams all of which we negotiated in the DARK with our flash lights. Walking down at the Big Paddy creek was a ball buster. We both did at least one "Face plant" on a sand bar, due to unseen "Barb wire" (tangle foot) which caught our feet, and caused us to fall down and go "Boom". (lol). We pressed North east, hand railing the creek, trying to find where the trail crossed over the Big Paddy, towards our parking area. We struck Gold, when I saw a orange marker ( Ribbon) tied to a tree,..then another, and still another...but no clear trail...just a mess where the flood ran through. We pressed on, and finally located what looked like a trail to our right, on Azimuth, a horse trail leading up the ridge. It was the Trail we sought!. We wearily but happily trudged up the mountain, and crossed the gravel road, following the trail to the very parking lot from which we began our Trek.Oh,..by the way,...we hiked this in 25 degree weather. We had a beautiful sunny day despite the cold. Actually, for a Missourian properly acclimatized, 25 degrees with no wind, is like 70 degree weather! :)
These wilderness areas can be confusing, very few if any trail markers.
Great video!
Thanks alot
Enjoyed your video of the Big Piney Trail. I'm new to backpacking and just discovered the trail about a month ago in my own backyard ( I live about 30 minutes east of the Roby Lake trail head ). Could you tell me what device or app you used in the video to display and record your hiking data? It looks interesting and seems to have the features I'm looking for. Thanks for the video!
+David Barbee it's called Ramblr. I usually put a link to it in the description. It's a rugged area so have fun and be careful. Be sure and watch both my videos of that area
Thank you. I will definitely take a look at the app and your other video. I actually have done the loop once already over the Thanksgiving weekend (2 day hike, overnight at Paddy Creek Campground). Your right, it is rugged, but I enjoyed it very much. I'm going there again tomorrow for a day hike with my wife.
+David Barbee cool
+David Barbee it is one of my favorite hikes
dam man on way I can do that when its so hot great video hope you did not get leg cramps from the heat
no i was fine. I've adjusted and learned to adapt to the heat. Thanks for watching
Flooding RUclips with hiking vids 😂
Cool trip. Are those snakes venomous?
no it was just a black snake
Nice video. I am thinking of going there. Which trails do you recommend the most?
+Sabina England i would do the whole loop. North and south and its about the same no matter which on you do first.
the man hole cover is likley a well
That's what I thought too
Caveman Outdoors oh that's cool
Did you pick the map up from the ranger station or are you able to print it?
www.ouachitamaps.com/Paddy%20Creek.html
Dog is super cute. Also any chance of bears or wildlife that can eat you in these trails...!?
Lol no not really, I guess there's always that chance. We do have black bear.
The lilies and iris both have similar foliage
Ģoes through teeny weeny Fairdealing north then curves west
did ya get the ghost voice during trip totals and what was it saying
That was a text message alert from a friend. It's the Joker from Batman
thats cool
What's the tick situation like?
at the time that i was there i didn't have a problem with ticks
is she a natural or well trained either way a good hiking pal she dont take off on lead how is she when she sees a rabbit
She has been trained on the trail since she was a young pup. She has taken off chasing a rabbit once but I call her and she comes right back. She is an awesome trail companion. Thanks so much for watching and commenting
Caveman Outdoors that's my pleasure as I can't get out there and do that myself right now
gimp leg
+embarado smithing and woodcraft been there
I enjoyed this video, we are a little ways away from each other but I will stay in touch, thank you
+Roger Lamb Thanks Roger, even though it was hot this was one of my favorite trips from last year
Is Sheba a Ridgeback?
+Dean Carder yes she is
What type of dog is Shiba?
Got her from the humane society and they weren't right, they had her as a lab. I know she is part rhodesian ridgeback.
Old military road crossed in front of Grandma's house
what kind of paddy are they cow or bison lol
Now that I don't know lol
How-do-you-do this?
What do you mean? It's my happy place.
as soon as you said shared by horses, I lost interest. I have hiked many trails that were wonderful that later were shared. erosion, mud, trash, and horse crap.
To each his own but you're missing out
