When the King of topwater fishing makes a video about frog tips, you better believe I am going to be glued to the screen and taking notes! Amazing video man, thanks for putting a video like this together. You taught me a bunch and im sure experienced and unexperienced anglers will learn from this.
Keep coming out with how-tos! I love them! The idea of hanging the line over limbs in spring is genius. Everybody uses a frog and most ppl are good but bamabass is my favorite frog fisherman
I am a largemouth fishing maniac from Toronto, Canada. Your techniques for frog fishing work in every environment even a colder one like here in Ontario. Great explaining and your video editing is excellent. Love early morning topwater...your tip on reeling a little slack in before the hookset is a great tip. Tight lines
Nice. I'll keep working that frog. I totally agree with getting excited when you finally get a blow up. I must have casted 30+ times(working a slower presentation) before it happened. I missed it but this video gave me the confidence to want to keep throwing it. Thank You!
You're the BOMB, Stephen!!! Great video! Not only are you a great fisherman- but you have enough integrity to share your knowledge, so that we can catch more- many thanks!!!
Man I’ve been fishing largemouth for 31 years...usually a spinner, swimbait or chatter bait guy, but here lately frogging is my new obsession. Appreciate the good advice, it’s come in handy.
I set the hook on a slackline 90% of the time when I'm throwing a frog. My hook-up ratio has skyrocketed since I started slackline hook setting. I'm definitely not saying you are wrong, just that there is more than one way to do this. Love all your videos!
I liked the pointer on pointing the rod tip at the fish to where all the slack has been taken up. Good stuff. Would like to see a video on how you actually retrieve the frog to where you can walk it or pop it.
Another awesome video Bamabass. I learned how to frog fish from your videos. I'm sure I work for all of us when o say thanks for an instructional video. You should definitely continue doing these. I'm sure there's a lot more we can learn from you. Keep up all the good work and ROLL TIDE!
Finally, an non-sponsored(I've order via Bama Frogs.SO I Sponsor you) yet highly respected Angler stating that you can go as low as 30-pound braid for your frogs! Anglers who make a living from sponsors can't say that you may get away with less than 65-Pound braid when throwing a frog in ANY condition. THANK YOU BamaBass! The Yellowfin Tuna fishermen laugh at Largemouth Bass Anglers' using upward of 30 pound braid for a fish so incredibly smaller -- And Rightly so. The structure is very different, and so is the fish, but not over #30, braid, ans definitely not #65! We have no excuses, nor do the Calico guys.
great video, couldnt have been explained better..i thought i was the only person that hung my baits over limbs like that to get those strikes!!! awesome footage man, keep doing what you do!
Great stuff Russ! Frogs rock! Love the new format, like to see your tips and techniques on fall crankbait fishing! Thanks again and as always great clip!
Great video! I've fished topwater for a while but here recently, I've been fishing more frogs. Still have lots to learn but I'm having a blast. Keep up the good work and great videos.
Now that's what I' talking about!!! Super video with lots of specifics. You are my hero! With winter just around the corner, how about an instructional video on using your electronics when fishing flutter spoons, Alabama rig, or drop shot?Fred Fishbite Fishwell, Sr.
+Whit Whitfield Thanks Fred Fishbite! I should have some humminbird tips in my next couple of videos from some deep fish I caught on my last few trips.
PERFECT timing! I just bought some Stanley ribbit frogs today and you uploaded this right before I buy the booyah pad crasher frog on Tuesday. now I'll know how to actually use the darn thing 😂
Mono or braid is all about preference. I personally fish all my hollow body frogs with 50lb power pro braid and I've caught bass anywhere from open water to the thick stuff. Great Video BamaBass and don't forget the black marker!
I've been told 50 is too light and 65 is the minimum for this type of fishing. I already have 50 on my reel, but do you ever end up having issues where 65 would be better?
I personally have never had a problem with 50lb braid. The only times that my braid would break is if I wrapped it around a log or thick branch multiple times, and I doubt 65lb braid could save anyone from that situation. I'd say give that 50lb braid a try and see how it works for you. If it doesn't fulfill your fishing needs, swap that stuff out and upgrade. Whatever you decide to do will only benefit you in making your own preference. Good luck and rip some lips!
I like your videos. I, personally, haven't ever had good luck using mono on a baitcasting reel. Braid w/mono backing is always used on my frog rod that is 7'6" by Dobyn's Rods. I use about 30lbs braid.
Thanks for the froggin tips, gonna use a few of them tonight. Had a young large mouth bass absolutely CRUSH a hard body frog popper bait. Only problem I ran into was trying to fish it through heavy cover. Smh.......got a lunker hunt to go back and try again.
i started frog fishing last fall for pretty much the first time (i sometimes used frogs before that but rarely). sprinker frogs and bigfoot scum frogs are just my favorite thing ever. the bigfoot frog is like those ribbit ones, but a hollow body frog. i've caught SO MANY BASS pullin' these things steadily across water/pond gunk/pads/etc. i've also missed SO MANY BASS, too. this year i switched to a 7 foot medium heavy rod and instead of catching 1 out of 5 "catchable" bites, i'm catching 3 out of 5 on bad days. with that kind of frog they just miss it or don't get a good hit on it a lot of times. i do live in ohio, so we aren't getting massive down-south-size-bass, so i'm sure that contributes to it too. but...yeah. frog fishin' is just the best. i know i'd catch more if i used my 2nd pole for things other than frogs, BUT I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO DO IT.
A tip from a magician, we do this to make 'invisible' thread less visible, and it works on braid. Take a black sharpie and color 1/2" lengths of the braid from the lure about 1-2' up the line about 1/2-1" apart. It breaks up the line's visibility. Some fishermen color a solid section of line, but I find dashing the color gets more bites. It's an old magician's trick, and ime it's gotten me a lot more hits on topwater in open water with braid.
it's amazing how few people like to bounce baits from limbs. it's my favorite way to get fish to bite. I have found that if a fish is anywhere in the neighborhood, it can't help but strike. cool to see other people use it too.
Just started frog fishing about 3 weeks ago. I'm using a sebile pivot frog on a 6'6 okuma medium action rod with a lews spinning reel with 15lb braided spider wire. Get lots of blow ups but for some reason I don't think I'm doing the action right. I'm fishing a river that has some real nice smallies in it which are always splashing the water. I just can't get them to strike as often as I think they should. Should I get a frog with legs or stick with the "tassels"? Also curious if I should get a smaller frog. No one really fishes with frogs where I fish, so I don't really have anyone to ask lol.
Excellent video, full of much needed information. I went frog fishing first time 10/2015. Had a blast. I will definitely be using this video for help. Thanks!!
My 9 year old son just tied on his first frog (popper) earlier today and his first cast... BOOM!! reaction bite as soon as hit the water, missed of course, second cast different spot all together, whack another blow up, missed it too... He had several other blow ups periodically, He's now officially hooked to frog fishing!
he is so right about the surprise factor you just never know when a lunker is going to burst out of the water I've lost many big bass just because I wasn't ready to set hook
All great tips and baits. esp. about getting the slack out. It gives just enough time for that fish to turn and start heading away . This works for all types of fish that take top water baits (esp those big muskies) .
I’m a complete rookie at bass fishing and I’ve had probably 15 good hits/swallows on frogs but either they are spitting them back out or I’m pulling too fast. I’ve tried delaying my response a bit but nothing. I will try reeling slack to see if that helps. Maybe you can describe the feel/bump that I am supposed to get they have it secure or do you just reel it tight and yank?
Very helpful. I've seen your dangling technique in previous videos and have tried it but haven't got anything yet. Water temp is still in the 60's here in Florida so frog fishing is still working. Thanks for the tips though!
I'm over here at West Point Lake Georgia and oh how I love top water action! I've always wanted to get into frog fishing but has been kind of hap hazard thus far. I very much appreciate the very specific equipment and seasonal techniques that you shared! Excellent! Gives me some great info to get started off on the right foot! Come on spring time weather! 8)
Definitely tips and tricks !!! I recently caught my first few bass ever and I'm a little addicted. Used a rattle trap on the first few and a frog on just one. Technique I'm sure needs to improve before they bite the frog more. Love your videos !!!
I was frog fishing Sunday in water that was 46 degrees. Frog bite still going strong here not a lot of hook ups. They seemed to just want to grab the legs and pull it under. Still fun and did get a few fish in the boat.
I have a question for you , I'm looking to buy a new bait casting reel for my st croix medium ,fast action rod . I'm going to be using it for frogs and some plastics . I'm debating between a 7.3 and a 8.1 gear ratio which route should I go ? Great videos by the way !
Favor: Would please clarify your St. Croix rod for me, please? Did you say medium with fast action tip? I'm using alot of your techniques to improve my fishing. 3 weeks ago I caught my largest bass ever, 6 lbs 11 oz on a Booyah Poppin Pad Crasher, 6'-9" Veritas 2.0 mh rod, after watching your vids. Good job and thanks!
I found that working the frog with the the rod tip up helps with setting the hook too early because you have to reel down and hesitate before you set the hook
I got a question... I love using frogs I got alot of different colors..problem is for me..I go to ponds and it seems no matter what color I use they don't ever try for it? I live in wpb FL and I've tried morning noon and evening ...but they don't ever want it? what can I do or am I doing wrong ?? plz HELP me!!! Also I am really short lol 4 ft 11 inches and so I have a kinda short rod it's a very cheap rod I am new so I thought a longer rod wasn't b best for me... I have a medium action bait caster from Walmart... any tips would b awesome... once I get better I tend to buy better ...
love this type of video! what season would you say we're heading into now? (Arizona) how about a video on baits relating to that season? Thanks for the tips!
great vid for the kids, especially. the rod lengths are very important as well, for beginners. (of course you had to remind me of my favorite dream @ 4:50!) I personally would like to see you do a vid on fishing rip-rap, in the same manner as here. we have a lot of it here, and always do well with numbers, but not size? (primarily smallmouth). thanks, and you have come a LONG WAY, my friend!
I've got a shimino reel and a ugly stick 7' rod. Having a hard time deciding on braid or mono. I've got 25lb mono on my diawa rod and reel set up...you said you usually use mono since the fishwont see it. Would you just go with mono on the new set up or try braid?
definitely awesome advice! good video and would love to see more. i will back your claim on the most important thing is getting rid of the slack...when i started doing that, my hookup ratio went from 60% to 95%. great advice
Another great video man and you definitely have some of the best blowups frog fishing on youtube. Some truly great footage you have recorded!! But for more open water frog fishing, what type of action do you prefer with your frog rod?? Do you like the extra fast stiff tip or just a fast action tip?? Thanks alot for your input
I fully agree with you on your line size 15 or 17 lb mono is plenty strong enough for frog fishing even in thick cover. All these pro's brain wash everyone into thinking you need expensive braid but it's just product pushing.
I've tried everything from braid to mono anything under 60lb will rather snap on the hook set or snap stretch to much if its mono or fluorocarbon that's why I stick with 80 lb braid
Pulled plenty of hawgs out of giant lily pad beds with 17lb trilene. I'm talking 2 foot wide with stems thicker than a cue stick. Pulled em out of slop so thick you can almost walk across.
Really helpful video. I've always heard you should use heavy power rods for frog fishing because of the thick gauge double hooks. Do you not find a Medium power rod has an issue driving those hooks in? I will definitely have to try this out. Thanks
+Mike Zoskey Not at all, a good hook set technique is far more important than rod power. But if you are struggling with hook up ratio, you are correct, try using a heavier rod until you perfect your technique.
thanks for the vid it really helped now I know why I missed that 8 pounder in the Gary Yamamoto big bass challenge I next time i will remember this vid and practice this summer till next year.
Awesome video I use frogs but always have trouble getting that strike , I’m going to try some of your techniques thanks for the video keep them coming 👍
I frog fish in south east Massachusetts a lot, but I have had no such luck with frogging? I have boo yah pad crashed Jr. in bullfrog and black n yellow. Booyah poppin pad crasher in white yellow brown black spots, and the lunkerhunt in toad colors. Jus so u have an idea of the color scheme I'm using. Any advice to help me?
One time when fishing from a Boat, I saw what looked like a giant ceramic frog (Lawn decorative type) 5' up a steep bank. I fired a cast at it with a Rapala, to point it out to my friend. I almost hit it and when I yanked the lure back towards the water, it snagged the frogs foot. The thing jumped in and splashed like a bowling ball. Drag was pumping off my spinning reel. I got it in and it was a 4-5# BullFrog. It was massive! It took two hands to grab it's back and the legs were 18" long. It was like holding a baby. When we were leaving, we set it on the ground. It jumped 10' then crashed brutally in the dirt, 3 times, before finally hitting the water. That frog and a 5# Bluegill, are the only times I've considered having something mounted. I regret not doing so now.
Wish I knew what I’m doing wrong lol. Is there a certain time of day frogs work and don’t work? Cause I’ve gotten nothing, no action at all (except for ironically I caught a frog on a frog lure lol).
You mentioned using mono cause the bass can't see it, which I totally agree with. My problem is that I can't cast mono with a baitcaster if my life depended on it, it's sad but true. LOL. now I can cast braid just fine. So I've recently started to use 20 - 30 lb mono leader with my braid at about 18 inches of mono, using an FG Knot. Just wanted your thoughts on that.
Anthony Glover I don't know how he feels about that but I can tell you from experience that it works very well. The little bit of stretch of the mono leader allows me to work a popping frog better than braid and because it's clear I get more bites in open water but still have the power of the braid for more solid hooksets. I don't use it in heavy cover though because the knot collects a lot of gunk and can cause casting issues. Personally I prefer a blood knot because it's easier for me to tie, slip proof if done right and flows effortlessly even through semi-micro guides. I was worried about the strength but I've never had a break-off on the leader.
Great video bro!! The best I've seen on frogs... what color do you like using, when.. if you had 2 colors what would they be? Also, an in depth video on jigs colors, trailers and presentation would be awesome! Liked and subscribed! Thanks again!
Great video, however I'd like to know when fishin a pond after a good rain, when the water is almost like chocolate milk what can I do to increase the strike on a frog????
Hey there Bamabass! Your videos are top notch! Quick question. I noticed some of your frogs have shorter leg skirts. Did you trim them yourself? If so, to which length?
hello BamaBass, I've been buzzing a frog over grass mats lately and have had great strikes, but ive been having a lot of trouble catching the fish. do you think it is because the bass is striking and covering the frog in grass making it harder to hook it? i usually wait 2 to 3 seconds before setting the hook. do you think i should wait even longer?
2-3 seconds is plenty long but unfortunately fishing around grass causes the hookup ratios to suffer. Just keep fishing and getting the bites and eventually you will get them.
Are you fishing the walkin style during the fall on mono? What is your opinion on using a heavy as opposed to Meduim or MH like you mentioned in video. Great video man!
When the King of topwater fishing makes a video about frog tips, you better believe I am going to be glued to the screen and taking notes! Amazing video man, thanks for putting a video like this together. You taught me a bunch and im sure experienced and unexperienced anglers will learn from this.
+Tuco Salamanca Thanks Tuco, glad you enjoyed it.
TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT
Finally some bamabass how-to vids!!! 👍👍
+1Rod1ReelFishing Practice your frog dangling from tree technique before you come next Spring!
+mojo jojo Haha, I told him when he makes the trip I am going to put him on his personal best. It should be quite interesting!
fully agree! can't believe he uses mono, lighter braid and shorter rods though. whatever works I guess!

Thanks for the technique suggestions. Getting slack out of the line was one of my problems after a strike. Great video!
By far the best frog instructional video on RUclips that I have seen. Great video
+Andrew Harrell Thanks Andrew, glad you enjoyed it.
that chair looks comfy as hell

Ryan Caperchione it is...
Man, love your tips! I'm one the new guys and have lost a butt-load of heavy strikes to an improper hook set. I appreciate your help!
I LOVE this type of video! people wanna see what and how you catch such monster bass so consistently!
I love your channel. These 'tips and techniques' videos are great for consolidating information on a particular topic. Thanks!
One of the most informative vids on RUclips. Thanks. A similar video on jig fishing would be great. And all the different types of jigs.
Another awesome video Bamabass. I learned how to frog fish from your videos. I'm sure I work for all of us when o say thanks for an instructional video. You should definitely continue doing these. I'm sure there's a lot more we can learn from you. Keep up all the good work and ROLL TIDE!
+Rane Blanco Thanks Rane, happy to hear your feedback. Roll Tide!
My frogging setup is a Shimano Citica with #50 braid, and my rod is a dobyns fury 7ft heavy. And living in Florida I'm able to frog fish year round!

Great video. Lots of good tips. I just wish we had Large mouth Bass here.

Keep this how-to/tips & technique videos coming!

I am fishing our pond. Not a seasoned fisherwoman, but I do love it~ THANKS for the tips. very helpful
i started frog fishing last fall for pretty much the first time (i sometimes used frogs before that but rarely). sprinker frogs and bigfoot scum frogs are just my favorite thing ever. the bigfoot frog is like those ribbit ones, but a hollow body frog. i've caught SO MANY BASS pullin' these things steadily across water/pond gunk/pads/etc. i've also missed SO MANY BASS, too. this year i switched to a 7 foot medium heavy rod and instead of catching 1 out of 5 "catchable" bites, i'm catching 3 out of 5 on bad days. with that kind of frog they just miss it or don't get a good hit on it a lot of times. i do live in ohio, so we aren't getting massive down-south-size-bass, so i'm sure that contributes to it too. but...yeah. frog fishin' is just the best. i know i'd catch more if i used my 2nd pole for things other than frogs, BUT I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO DO IT.
I think a video on cold water fishing would be really cool. Like what you find most effective in late fall/winter/early spring
loved the footage.. never thought a bass will hit a frog reeling in at that speed... awesome. ive learned something
it's amazing how few people like to bounce baits from limbs. it's my favorite way to get fish to bite. I have found that if a fish is anywhere in the neighborhood, it can't help but strike. cool to see other people use it too.

+R.j. Hillman Thanks boss!
love this type of video! what season would you say we're heading into now? (Arizona) how about a video on baits relating to that season?
Thanks for the tips!
great vid for the kids, especially. the rod lengths are very important as well, for beginners. (of course you had to remind me of my favorite dream @ 4:50!) I personally would like to see you do a vid on fishing rip-rap, in the same manner as here. we have a lot of it here, and always do well with numbers, but not size? (primarily smallmouth). thanks, and you have come a LONG WAY, my friend!
+Michigan Mister Thanks, theres a good chance I will be fishing some rip-rap this Fall/Winter so I will try to film a technique video with it.
of course I thank you!
+troubledsoul79 Thanks, and it will definitely help the hookup ratio.
Thanks for the education. Really appreciated the tips. Still working on catching my 1st top water fish. Would be a blast if it's a bass on a frog.
Great Video! Where in Alabama do you fish, because I live in central Alabama and barely see, let alone catch fish this big!?
Really loved this video, I'm getting into frog fishing... actually going tomorrow!! Thanks, Great tips!!
great tips I have been missing hook sets I'm going to try some of your tips great video
thanks for the vid it really helped now I know why I missed that 8 pounder in the Gary Yamamoto big bass challenge I next time i will remember this vid and practice this summer till next year.
Thanks for the tips. Cant wait until spring to put them to good use.
Thank you very much I’ll try because I did miss a lot of fish hooks set
Good Stuff, this is my second year frog fishing and these tips will help out. Thanks
+Jason P (bafishaholic) Thanks Jason
Awesome video I use frogs but always have trouble getting that strike , I’m going to try some of your techniques thanks for the video keep them coming 👍
I frog fish in south east Massachusetts a lot, but I have had no such luck with frogging? I have boo yah pad crashed Jr. in bullfrog and black n yellow. Booyah poppin pad crasher in white yellow brown black spots, and the lunkerhunt in toad colors. Jus so u have an idea of the color scheme I'm using. Any advice to help me?
I have found that frogs are my go to for bass here in Nebraska please show me everything you know about froging for bass. Thank You very much
how important is color when it comes to frogs
dark belly for sun down and very early in the morn white or bright belly when the sun is out
TN outdoors. Natural colors
TN outdoors not very, the fish know where the frog is by vibrations not by sight.
Cause I’ve gotten nothing, no action at all (except for ironically I caught a frog on a frog lure lol).
hey great tips, were should I go to get a good frog for under 6 bucks. any ideas help.
I was worried about the strength but I've never had a break-off on the leader.
love the color scheme in your house
I like the how video to learn new techniques and equipment to use. Keep them coming.
This was excellent video I'm just starting to use frogs now and I think the information you gave will really help thank you very much - new sub
Great video bro!! The best I've seen on frogs... what color do you like using, when.. if you had 2 colors what would they be? Also, an in depth video on jigs colors, trailers and presentation would be awesome! Liked and subscribed! Thanks again!
Great video, however I'd like to know when fishin a pond after a good rain, when the water is almost like chocolate milk what can I do to increase the strike on a frog????
frog with a dark belly
Great video, can you make a video on how to fish crank baits?
If you had to use only ONE frog what would you use and what would the size and color be?
Just keep fishing and getting the bites and eventually you will get them.
thanks man.
Are you fishing the walkin style during the fall on mono? What is your opinion on using a heavy as opposed to Meduim or MH like you mentioned in video. Great video man!
Nobody makes a better frog video than +Bamabass!
+Kyle Bumgardner Thanks Kyle!
That's some badass camo you're wearing. I can see right through you to the chair
What knots do you use when frog fishing and can you do a video on how to walk a frog
