  • Tshering Tobgay was a Bhutanese civil servant who worked to advance vocational training. He was the first civil servant to resign to take up active politics (he did so in Feb 2007). At that time His Majesty the King repeatedly called for people to take up politics and form political parties to prepare for the introduction of democracy.
Now Tshering is a Member of Parliament representing Sombaykha Constitutency in Haa. He is the Leader of the possibly the world's smallest Opposition Party in the National Assembly of Bhutan. Tshering is 46 years old, married with 2 children, enjoys the outdoors, trekking, running and biking.
He discusses what Gross National Happiness, and what makes him happy, as any red blooded Bhutanese would.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This was a wonderful event to be a part of with the Expedition Bhutan and Bhutan International Marathon Team. The world is not a perfect place but recognition of a problem within humanity is a good first step. Several here criticized and ridiculed Bhutanese on this post and that;s ok. Freedom of speech. But I believe at least trying is better than criticizing. With respect to all who have written here.

+chaurasta if u want to know why they were forced to leave bhutan then look at the comment of riggyl wangpo jus below. This happened many years back,a lot of things have changed since then. Anyways we are very happy in bhutan n it truly is a peaceful country n i am saying this cuz i have lived in other countries n i realy can see the large difference between bhutan n other countries.

chaurasta... nepali people were not forced to leave... they did't want to obey country's law and they left themselves burning government schools and even national dress... How is it possible so many nepali speaking people still Bhutanese if bhutan government chased all nepalis? Even if it was true, they were terrorist of our country. By the way my mother tongue is also nepali. I am still happy Bhutanese....

@@chaurasta Bhutan never went around claiming to be the happiest country on this earth, it just took an initiative which many big and developed and many people like us never even questioned or mind to mention. When a small country like Bhutan makes an effort , i think a person in right mind should rather learn to appreciate it. Bhutan has its own problem , its not all good and happy, and fairy tales.
Problems are inevitable and Bhutan is no exception, but at least the country is taking a step to address on happiness and making changes.
And things you read aren't all true, mean no harm but Bhutan compared to many countries have lower crime rates and many are satisfied and happy. I am a Bhutanese and i know my country.
      PEACE.✌

Interesting point about Happiness and different faiths, many people live a sad remorseful life or may not fit in society which becomes a recruitment for religion. You see this in western world Christianity with a sinner wretch like ideology. When Islam came (part of 3 Abrahamic faiths), there was a time of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ debate, early Islamic scholars may have followed that Jesus (Isa) was crucified (either way that does still not make him a God), but when they observed Christians living in pain, and sadness, the whole ideology of crucifixion was interpreted differently in Islam.

Well spoken, articulate able to get his point across. Now let's compare this to the sleepy old Bum that Nepal just picked to be their prime minister. Says a lot about where this countries are currently and what direction they're headed in.
