VERY interesting review. One of those albums where you understand the choices the artist makes *and* you think they work but in that, you're still left missing some of the elements that elevated some of their better material. It happens, sometimes.
I liked this album a lot upon first listen; Billie's performance in particular is just STUNNING the whole way through, the best it's ever been, but I'm unsure whether I like this more than _Happier Than Ever_ or not. For me, it's a case of an album being more consistent vs an album with higher highs but lower "lows". And said "lows" on _Happier Than Ever_ were still pretty good so that makes the decision harder for me. I'll need to revisit both albums to help decide.

I'm not sure how to feel about the record. I certainly agree that I like it, but not sure I love it. I'm happy she's singing more often, but it feels like her more unique side is missing a bit. Honestly, I think this is one of those records that I'm not huge on, but probably is something SHE needed to have, and honestly, that's valid. I'm happy it exists, and I do see this growing on me, but maybe not to the extent that it becomes an AOTY contender.
i adore lunch, it’s what i’ve been hoping billie would do for a while now, and i actually have the range to sing it, and i’m really happy about that. the diner is note perfect on the vibe of a stalker, and i really like the distortion and the arrangement and what i’m trying to say here is that it feels like something that really crosses the line between her new stuff and her old stuff and it’s something entirely unique and she should make more of it, she should really do a concept album with that kind of stuff i think she’d have a lot of fun with it
I’m a little surprised to see Chihiro at the bottom considering NDA was so high up for you, both songs have magnificent production that just builds and feels transcendent
Something about a lot of comparing one project over another gets boring to me. I enjoy this album for that they wanted to create. Yes, the sounds were great on WWAFAWDWG, and Billie playing characters. I like seeing Billie herself more in her music and creating what motivates her and Finneas over a 'popular' sound. I liked Happier Than Ever as much as the first one. So glad they can make what they want, with exceptions. I like this one as well.
agree with you there! I love billie, ergo I love to hear whatever it is she wants to share at any particular time. and then I will repeat all the other projects too anyways, so I will always have all sounds and stories and characters she want to put out, you know :)
i honestly wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a sister album or three or four bonus cuts somewhere on billie’s hard drive, this feels like a part of something bigger, not that the album itself it’s really good it is, it just feels slightly incomplete if you know what i mean.
this might be my album of the year only because it came out the day after i broke up with my longtime partner, and the greatest does some things to the emotionally distraught sapphic mind.
fun fact: the strings outros on skinny and blue mirror the chorus melody on the greatest.

lunch is easily my favorite song from the album, glad to see its gonna be the first single
The vocal production on her albums is the thing stopping me really returning much outside selects cuts but this feels more like an overextended ep of ideas that work better in microcosm.
Billie did not disappoint
Imo her best album yet. Took the best parts of her previous albums (the quirky weirdness of her first album, the introspective nature of her second), and made it into a great cohesive whole. Also comes across as more worldly and knowing. (all at 22, my age). Her voice is evidence of that enough imo. The whisper voice that she’s known for is here but she lets it all out/belts more too, like happier than ever, it’s cathartic
The only parts I didn’t like were, interestingly enough, the auto tune on L’amour de ma vie

i think this album isn't quite as good as happier than ever, but it's still pretty damn great. THE GREATEST, WILDFLOWER, LUNCH, and THE DINER are top-tier billie songs.

This is not what I expected from Billie. I find "Lunch" to be ridiculous 'cause of the inappropriate content. The album just doesn't interest me.

The thing with Billie is the same issue I have with Beyonce: apart from a few songs from an album (1-4) these projects are full of good songs that I'll mostly probably never come back to lol

It’s mad to think that people thought she was queerbaiting back in the day. My gaydar was going off from minute ONE. Sometimes you just know.
after this album i get the feeling that despite olivia being crowned as baby taylor, billie might be the more apt successor. i think we need to put billie, taylor, finneas, and jack antonoff in a room together and see what they come up with. we might get the most interestingly strange music to ever come out of any of them.
pretty keen to hear the thoughts on the new ZAYN album. Something different to what he has previously done.
Lamour feels more like an anime intro to me anybody else get anime vibes or is that just me

"Worst" Song: Wildflower (A bit weaker compared to everything else here)
Love this album.
Honestly, the only thing I disagree with in this video is that point where you said Finneas shouldn't work on his own projects. I think he's got a lot of potential in the solo-sphere, with a great voice and production skills to match. I think if he keeps going, he could put out some S-tier music.

Honestly, I feel very conflicted on this whole album cycle. The part where you brought up the albums sound being Billie's most tasteful record yet really hit me, because that's the reason this album doesn't click with me nearly as strongly as i'd like it to. The electronic flourishes in the production are interesting and I'd say this is better than Happier Than Ever for me (I'm in the minority of people who dislikes that record for the most part but that's a whole different can of worms)
What I'm trying to say is that even though i don't think Hit Me Hard and Soft is bad necessarily, its the final nail in the coffin of Billie slowly getting rid of the darker edges that i used to be obsessed with. Thus, her music just doesn't appeal to me in the way it used to, even though i desperately wish it did 😢

The album is complacent and devoid of melodic invention. They're a talented pair of songwriters. But this is poor. If they do much of this on their tour (and I'll know from the youtube fan videos at concerts) I'm selling my ticket for the O2 London. Sorry.
