Having been a member of HMX-1 etc., many Thanks for the video. The VH-3D's were wonderful aircraft to work and fly on and it's sad to see them go, however, they served their purpose well. Back in my day, we didn't have the VH-60's......we were still using the VH-1N's which were another beautiful and execuitive looking aircraft. My fondest memories were flying with HMX-1. While I was on Presidental Support during the Nixon and Ford administrations, I did not get to Quantico until the Carter & Reagan administrations where I actually worked on the aircraft. I thought the EH-101 (VH-71) would have been a better choice - but it's Brit/Italian - would have been assembled and integrated by Lockheed in NY.
The difference in contract prices was due to mission creep accumulated at the time.
The S-92 does not contains all the "goodies" that had been pasted onto the VH-71 and ballooning its price.
IOW: if the S-92 had been similarly loaded up, the price would have come out just as high.

    • @nb658

Not so much. Although we did a better job of capping anticipated growth this 92 is by no means a simple commercial aircraft. The 71 had additional challenges besides cost growth. At the end of the day its finding a balance that is somewhere in the midst of all of the requirements. Nothing we looked at was the total solution.

I’ve seen s-92 land in grass tons of times and I’ve never seen them burn a yard. They will sometimes leave exhaust smoke. I have a hunch that was BS and the Canadian cyclone having cracked tail booms which is very like the vh-92 so they used that as an excuse of why it’s not in service. The exhaust should be pointed up for IR threats.

It isn't just the exhaust being hot and causing some scorching of the grass, it is also the weight of the aircraft, it is so heavy that the mobile platforms the VH-3D lands on would sink into the ground really bad, and was even causing the boards to break, so they needed to make the platforms bigger, about 3 times the size, and about twice the thickness, meaning they are having to develop even those platforms into being man portable, as they do not have cranes or other vehicles on that lawn

There are issues with grass burn from sitting to long in place. The last thing the White House will allow is for the lawn to sustain that kind of damage. None from the Sea Stallion but quite a bit from the Blackhawk. The engines, rotor system and transmissions were identical in the S92 prototypes. It was billed to the US Army as the S-92 Superhawk but the Army didn't buy it, so they added an extra set of bifilar weights to the top, added electronic vibration dampeners, and a plush interior and sold it as a luxury helicopter then redid the transmissions for the off shore market(the results of which have destroyed a few helicopters and killed people), so they had to redesign a lot of stuff under the hood but it is very close to flying the UH-60M Blackhawk just bigger.

If the President flies on a Space Force aircraft, the designation would be Space Force-1.
Remember when Dubya flew on a Navy S-3 to a carrier? That plane was designated Navy-1.
Also if the President is on a civilian aircraft, the designation is Executive-1.
If the President happen to fly in an Army helo, it would be Army-1
I think I made my point. Most folks assume any fixed wing the President is on is called Air Force-1, any Helo he is on is Marine-1 but thats not how it works. That said the POTUS almost exclusively flies in Airforce jets and Marine Helos.

237,000,000. Insane and built off an exisiting airframe. Let's make sure every state has a piece of the action so congress can never say no. What is wrong with the existing platform? Eisenhower farewell address coined the term millitary industrial complex. Retire as a colonel or a general take a job as a lobbyist or get a job at a defense contractor. Blah blah wonder if it could be built for 236,000,000. Wonder how often it even gets used. Regardless, is a beautiful aircraft.

A- Why keep showing video of the H-3s formerly used, while talking about a completely different airframe?
B- The engines are set up high on the fuselage and provide no thrust, and therefore minimal heat, which might adversely effect the flora of the Whitehouse. The REAL impact would be from the rotor wash, but that's been the problem with ALL helos landing at/departing from the Whitehouse property.
C- Doubt my knowledge and expertise in this area? Double check my screen name. I was an Aircraft Maintenance Technician in the USAF, specifically working on heavy lift helicopters (more specifically the HH-3C & MH-53H Pavelow III).

The call sign Air Force-1 is exclusive for Air Force aircraft with the President on board flown by Air Force pilots, Marine-1 for any Marine aircraft the POTUS is on. If the President is on a Navy aircraft, it would be called Navy-1.
A littke know fact is if a President happens to be on a private/civilian aircraft the call sign is Executive-1
