What happened to Kyde is known as "Bonk" in cycling world, when your leg muscle just gives out due to fatigue and low energy. No shame in it as this even happens to pro cyclist too, if they are not careful with energy intake when pedaling long distance.
so glad kyde did not get hurt. she shouldnt be embarrassed and keep in mind all people who watch this, are unlike her, just on a sofa or in front of a computer. so much kudos to her, for being on a bike!
Also, absolutely massive respect to Kyde for giving it her all to the very end. We all have our athletic strengths and weaknesses, but there's something special about leaving everything you've got on the road like that. I know it sucks to come up short of your goal, but you can be sure you gave it your all.
Kyde: i'm exhausted. Eric: i feel fine. I think my body is just built for this. Me: cant wait for the next time warp fwd. Eric for the rest of the vid: im exhausted y'all.
Hi Kyde and Eric! My wife and I also live in Japan and have had similar adventures to yours, which is why I appreciate you sharing when things don't quite go to plan. In the moment it can be frustrating or embarrassing, but often we remember those moments fondly later on and how you got through it together. Thanks for making these videos, and we love seeing such a similar experience of two Americans living in Japan.
When Kyde's legs just gave out I felt for her so bad. That happened to me hiking in the mountains. lol Nord had to carry my pack the rest of the way to a campsite.
That second day was brutal Im glad you are both ok. I bet that onsen felt amazing on your sore legs and backs eh? Looking forward to seeing the next one.
I know I can watch these early via Patreon but for some reason, I like waiting until they're made public on RUclips. You don't know how excited I was to see this video in my subscriptions- no other good videos this morning- cause I woke up an hour early thanks to daylight saving haha.
Absolutely baller to give this a go! For these all-day / multiple-day efforts, nutrition and hydration _during_ the activity can have a huge huge impact. This is a much bigger topic than can be covered in a youtube comment, but if this is a thing you enjoy doing it's worth reading up on.
**Side-to-side smacks le bot up** Yikes! Bike seats chow down on my poor flat tush. Thank you for both enduring the hard slog and knowing when to get an assist. Lovely content as per usual. Down with the algorithm!
You all are both troopers! I wouldn’t be able to do half of that ride! So glad that man stopped and helped out when needed. Can’t wait to see the rest of the trip ☺️
The little onsen thing and Katie giving the bath instructions were my favorite. I think it was brave to keep going and show that it’s OK to have limitations - I think we all know that Katie is no kind of wimp.
I thought that you would take Koshukaido(Route20) watching the Intro. Now I understand you took the Southern route. When I worked for a company in Gotemba, I rode a motorcycle from north Kawagoe to Gotemba via Hachioji and Fuji-Yoshida on every weekend. I sometimes drive to Atsugi and Chigasaki where my relatives live. So I am curious about the route you took and how it goes.
You guys always have interesting journeys, thanks for sharing! I've followed countless RUclipsrs in Japan over the years, you guys are the only ones still making interesting videos.
Watched a couple of moments live, but this "hybrid style" video really works well! Cycling uphill can be the best and worst thing all at once, but risking a serious muscle injury really isn't worth it so getting a lift was the best possible decision. Doesn't take away anything from Kyde's effort, it's hard enough going uphill, but it can be hellish with packed bike. Great job guys!
“Everybody gets to jump forward and find out! And I gotta live this fuckin’ life?! Come on!” 🤣 I feel like this video is the beginning of a beautiful and awesome journey! 🎉 Always enjoying your adventures ❤
Glad everyone ended up safe. I recently moved house and the last thing we carried in was the couch (cause it was the first thing into the truck). And my legs just completely gave out. Ended up under the couch. I can't imagine doing it with dozens of people watching along.
Our stomachs dropped when Kyde gave out--glad she came out OK! And Eric, your little graphic around 32:55 gives new meaning to the expression "pull the wool over one's eyes!"
I was relieved you both came through. I had a similar experience on a long walk, just 2kms from my car, but so exhausted / dehydrated I had to sit an hour before moving. A real learning experience, these things live in the memory.
👍Well done, hills are hell if you are doing a long ride and aren't doing them much. Don't tell anyone, but I have walked a couple... Does Eric bike around more in general life?
I wish I had thought of doing this while I lived in Japan from 2004-2011... I used to cycle all the time, so this would've been fun but now at 45... it would be hell. Oh well.
Hey if u want to cycle all around japan, do you need to go on the man roads like highway to bike? Or are there safe routes that for just for bikes? Also how much km do you guys clear each day on average ?
we aren't seasoned cyclists, so our distance isn't a good idea how what is possible. You aren't allowed on highways with a bike, there is almost always a smaller road you can take though. Not often separated bike paths, however. -E
@@TKGZONE google maps is spotty in japan, some areas have no bike directions, others have them. not sure what's best, we aren't experts with japanese biking.
I took a stab at laying out the route on ridewithgps they took up the mountain using the route they showed at the beginning. That hill is NO JOKE. I'm quite impressed that Eric could make it up, being a self-professed non-cyclist. I've been cycling about 2 years now, and I don't think I could make it up that hill without much lower gearing than I have. Hats off to Eric for making it up, and Kyde for giving it her all to try.
it's a long story, but basically they aren't useful for long trips. Once the battery dies you are just carrying more weight. Also, the bikes are expensive and selection inside Japan isn't very extensive, especially for my size and the style of bike we want. A lot of the foreign built bikes technically need to have licensing and lights as a moped in Japan would. There are a lot of reasons we didn't go that way.

There is no shame in quitting if you recognize your muscles being absolutely overwhelmed. Even if it feels bad ;)

Simply Amazing that a trust worthy person stopped to take Kyde. In UK or USA Kyde would never have beeen seen again. Japanese people are amazing.

so much kudos to her, for being on a bike!
"We don't want to wake up and those be stolen, but I kinda do because no uphill".
I love Kyde's honesty here.

I love the cuts between the live stream and your regular video
it does help fill in the gaps, especially if you missed the Stream!
Oh yeah, any food would be amazing after a day of cycling! And so nice of that guy to stop👍

This was a fun excursion to watch on Twitch!
10:29 lol Eric knows good content when he hears it
31:30 This ofuro is small compared to the number of shower seats. I guess if it's full people are just sitting elbow to elbow.
plenty of lap space!
Take it, easy guys. Try to stop now and then. Anyway, as usual, a great video thx!
It's a very interesting challenge. Hope all of your efforts are got paid.😉
At the tunnel @15:30 Kyde just switched to her robo climbing mode!
Again amazing!
Good job both do you for smashing this out, idk if I could do it! 😂
Kyde's legs went on strike.
I can see how tough it is
From 9:32 on, I was waiting for someone to say "mo yama."
I always fall off my bike; uphill, downhill, sideways
👍Well done, hills are hell if you are doing a long ride and aren't doing them much. Don't tell anyone, but I have walked a couple... Does Eric bike around more in general life?
I do a bit of biking, but not a lot. -E
haha that look at 5:58, like she was going to kill Eric. Ok, she was probably just listening but it also looks like "really??"
Recumbent bike/trike upgrade? No butt pain, no arm pain! Plus you can just sit and relax if you're too tired
Not that this helps now, or the only preparation you should think about, but Kyde should really carb load for a trip like this.
Do express buses from/to Fuji have bicycle mounts? Sweet ride though….
I wish I had thought of doing this while I lived in Japan from 2004-2011... I used to cycle all the time, so this would've been fun but now at 45... it would be hell. Oh well.
haha, I'm 42. -e
I think you "bonked" which happens when getting low on fuel when biking, just eat, drink and rest and you will recover.
also possible dehydration. Kyde was describing signs of depleted glucose well before the end. That hill was no joke.
A few years ago, when I rode a bicycle for the first time in a while, my butt died in about 3 hours.
I did watch loads on twitch but I'm filling up the start
We would love to plan a bike packing trip in Japan. How did you plan your route?
just Google and guessing hahahahaha.
"Man, you got a whole other world"
Love you guys!! Why not just use an electric bike to climb those hills? :)

What model of bike is that? It looks like the trek fx series.
fx-3
@@kydeanderic thanks for answering this question, I was seriously wondering about your gearing and this answers it. Mad props making it up that hill.
Think you need to buy a couple of scooters or a kei car.

Wait. Is Kyde’s hair blonde in this thumbnail?! 😱😱
haha it looks like that, it's just weird lighting from the weird sun

As an old cyclist that was never good in mountain bike events. For next time try energy drinks & banana's between meals.
