I have one big issue with the Susannah and Belly scene. This is like 3 weeks after prom were Susannah told Jere you are too good at pretending you’re fine and you never let anyone see how bad you’re hurting. And said you and Belly are best friends. Ignoring romantic relationships I thought it was odd she did not even mention Jere to Belly. Not about being there for him or trying to mend their friendship. Jenny confirmed in an interview that Adam had moved out. He was completely alone and she was only worried about Conrad. Even after he walked in he is barely mentioned. I know Conrad is endgame but it felt odd especially after Jere said his mom was the only person that ever saw him.

I totally see what you're getting at with that scene and the only thing I can think is that Susanna knows sooner or later Belly and Jere would find there way back to each other because of this bond they have. I also think they made it a point for Belly to see Jere because it was a oh shit moment for Belly to see what Jere has been going through this past year and she wasn't there to help him.

Saying this in a nice way, but it was actually Jere who shut Belly, Steven and Conrad out after summer ended. Belly tried to call and text him multiple times, it was mentioned during Conrad and Jeres talk in Boston. I do get he was hurt, but he shut ppl out so it was also on him to be alone. As for Susannah not mentioning it...she was aware of the situation I am sure. Her not mentioning it is her way of dealing with things, instead she chose to tell Belly they all will find their way back to each other.

So i rewatched this episode and I think the Susanna and Belly conversation has a lot to do with bow Belly handled things throughout season 2. This might be a littl out there or long but Bear with me.
So Belly promises Susanna that she will be there for Conrad because he will need her. So from the beginning of episode 2 she went with Jere to Brown and Cousins to find him. After they find him she does everything she can to help them get the house back, in Episode 3 she convinces Jere to work with Conrad to try and convince their dad to get them the trust to buy the house. In episode 4 she does whatever she can to get his mind off of things by going to the boardwalk. In episode 5 she tells him he had no idea that Julia would sell the house and he did nothing wrong. Episode 6 they have the scene in Party City when she tries to apologize about the funeral. Episode 7 they have the conversation by the trash cans were she tries to let him go, she helps him study so he can get into his dream school and she tries to tell him that she has feelings for Jeremiah so she doesn't break his heart like she did with Jere. In episode 8 she lets him go because she's moved on with Jere and she knows he needs to move on to and go to Stanford.
Now for the Jere part of the scene. Susanna and Belly see Jere they both light up for a second until they both see how hurt he still is and then Belly breaks down again. In that moment something flips in Bellys head because Jere was never mentioned until Belly says me and Jere or me and Conrad. I believe in that moment Belly saw everything Jere has been going through over the past year and realized that she needs to help him too and be there as his best friend which she tries to do during the funeral but Jere still wants No part of her. This also leads to the fight and her apologizing during episode 2. Also, i believe Jere never walked in and this conversation in the book which means they put it into the show for some reason.
    Done sorry for the rant.

The funny thing is the snow on the beach scene took place away from everything. But the Finch scene takes place somewhere where there are people there
They're not alone but they're lost in each other.
    For those relationships to work
Bonrad has to disappear from the world.
When Belly and Jeremiah are together the world around them disappears.

Didn't Conrad go talk to the lady at the Motel about the bus schedule that morning? What if he saw Belly and Jere kissing again on his way back to the room? That'd explain why he took back what he said and left as quickly as possible.

Also, I'm so happy you guys brought up Jeremiah walking in on Susana and Belly because know one else mentions that. In my mind that was the scene that really lead Belly to apologize during episode 2 because she actually saw what he was going through.

So Exile was the perfect song for that Belly and Conrad scene for two different reasons.
1st of course Belly and Conrad officially saying its over and you hear in the song Taylor saying i give so many signs.
2nd it transitions perfectly into Belly and Jeremiah new relationship because in the song it says "I never learned to read your mind (never learned to read my mind)" and the entire point of Belly and Jeremiah is their ESP.

I have a question that I’ve asked many Conrad fans that nobody could answer for me…
Can you please give me an example or 2 where Conrad makes Belly better or challenges her in a positive way?
I really just can’t see (based on the show) where this has happened. I also don’t see how Belly and Conrad have a deeper connection than her and Jeremiah. I argue that Jere and her have had deeper conversations about their feelings than Belly & Conrad. I’ll provide an example - In S2 E3 in the car when she tells him about volleyball issues and that she just couldn’t stop thinking about Susannah. He listens, understands her grief and also pushes her to go to camp bc he knows how much v-ball means to her.
The only time Conrad actually has a positive impact on Belly was helping her with her math homework… I do however think Belly is a very positive influence on Conrad. I just can’t see that he is good for her at this point in time.

    • @amandaelynch1

definitely agree with you on that. In my opinion, Conrad believes that carrying the weight of his burdens alone saves other people from having to share the burden he is going through with him. But what really happens is that emotionally he shuts down, isolates, becomes rude, mean, or cold. By him staying and stewing in his own, or other peoples, circumstances, he inevitably becomes an uglier version of himself and hurts others. We saw that throughout the entirety of season 1 where he secretly knew about his mums cancer diagnoses and his dad cheating on their mum, carried the weight of that alone by choice, and became emotionally volatile and shut down. Although there are times in Season 2 where he has his old 'lightness' back, it doesn't stay constant, which could be seen as emotionally abusive. His mood is unpredictable, which could make someone be careful and monitor how they respond to him based on the day or situation. Jere is easy, constant, supportive, emotionally available, etc etc. I'm not totally understanding the team conny's, tbh, team jelly for me!

      @Mamma_Mia_Mia 11 месяцев назад +1

@@amandaelynch1 Just read your comment so I am going to try to explain a few things how I see them ;)...
Conrad: Let's not forget, the whole series starts with Conrad being depressed due to knowing about his dads cheating and his Mums cancer coming back. He tries to keep this a secret, as it is his mothers wish to have one great last summer and he wants to respect that. Before this summer, Conrad used to be a smart, fun, happy, slightly introvert person, this is how he is portrayed throughout the series. He was raised to put his own feelings aside, to be protective of the younger ones and to guide them. He did especially so with Belly. He would teach her things (dancing, football), he would explain things to her she couldn't understand (infinity and throughout their relationship tri). Belly fell for him for all the right reasons until he fell into depression this summer. Even after getting together, they had beautiful moments. They would talk for hours on the phone abt things from their past like their parents, abt their feelings (Conrad opening up abt his dad and his Mum), they would talk about their future and what they would want (being with someone who make them feel electric). So summing this up, I'd say their conversations are on a whole deeper level than Jeres and Bellys. Conrad and Bellys relationship for sure was a rollercoaster, but had it's goo moments as well. As already mentioned, Conrad in an introvert and actually a shy person, open up ain't easy for him. Belly is also an introvert herself, but it's easier for her to be open with opther ppl. She would bring out the best in Conrad, he would laugh and open up to her, tell her things he couldn't tell other ppl and share his feelings. He would let her in his future dreams (becoming a doctor, getting into Stanford) and actually let her be part for the applying proces, as she reread his application fomrs. Conrad brought out the best in Belly as well. Belly always admired Conrads hard work ethic and him being passionate abt things like sports, school and being a little nerd. Belly strived to be better in school just like him and let him be her tutor for trig. She wanted to be able to get into good schools just like him,so she worked hard also with volleyball. Conrad made her want to reach for things she didn't think she was capable of.
Jere: So overall I do like Jeres character, but he does have his flaws as well and unfortunately they get overlooked very easily. Jere always felt second to Conrad in every way, which is their fathers fault. Adam would favourize Conrad and make Jere feel less important. He pushed Conrad to be better in everything. When being younger, Jere looked up to Conrad. But over time, he started to feel frustrated and jealous torwards Conrad for being better at everything and ppl putting him on a podestel. So when Jere noticed Belly and Conrad getting closer this summer, imo he saw it more as an competiion. Belly was his good friend and he didn't want to loose her to Conrad and be second to Conrad in yet another way. Jere build up insecurities and these insecurities brought out the worst in him when it came to Conrad and Belly. He started to interfere with their growing relationship and even tried to sabotage them. Ofc Conrad closing off ain't Jeres fault, but still Jere acted very immature and manipulative. At the end of S1, Jere shut Belly, Steven and Conrad out for months out of hurt. So when Conrad did it as mentioned in your comment, you would call him rude and self sabotaging, but I guess it would be ok for Jere to do it?
As for your comment abt emotional abuse...Jere punshed Conrad in s1 (physical abuse), he downtalks on his brother a lot, act jealous and calls him names like coward and asshole (emotional abuse), he tried to make Conrad look bad infront of Belly, but it backfired. Jere guilty tripped Belly at the end of s1 "it's not like my mother has cancer or anything" and also throughout their journey. He would get all sad and jealous whenever Conrad and Belly interact, even when they weren't together anymore and he made Belly feel guilty abt it. It went as so far, that Belly tried to pleason Jere. E.g. s2 ep8 when Conrad and Jere go to the grocery shop. Jere would pick a candy for Belly and even though she didn't necessarily like it, she said she could eat it after her favourite bc she wanted to please him. His happens quite often.
So honestly, I don't really see how ppl would see Conrads flaws but are overlooking Jeres. I measn Conrad for sure are more obvious as it is part of the whole triangle concept. S3 for sure will concentrate more on Jeres.
Again, I like Jeres charatcer, but I don't see him being a better fit for Belly. I also wouldn't say one brother is better than the other. It's all about timing. Right now, I do see Jere and Belly working out and being good for each other. Jere is a more laid back person (not in a negative way) and mentally stable and Belly is young and wants to enjoy life. But as mentioned by JH, the story ain't over yet. The characters are still growing, also Belly. S3 will reveal the true colors of everyone. Conrad will grow and heal and become the person Belly fell for in the first place. Jere and Belly will go off to college together, they will meet new ppl, develop new interests and ultimately will grow apart, the sings are already there.
So yeah, these are my toughts, hope I could help clearing things up ;)

Great podcasts - thank you for the exposition! As someone more in the age-range of the moms I was surprised and delighted by how invested I became in all these characters! Jenny Han wrote a fantastic piece of drama and I really feel the writing for the show improved several aspects of the books, adding depth to the characterisation of key players. Kudos to the whole cast, especially to Lola Tung and Gavin Casalegno. I was completely immersed in their wonderful performances and their crackling chemistry. This particular season did justice to their blossoming love story and they swept me back to my own giddy adolescence! We know that in the next season Conrad will return as the natural romantic lead and I'm looking forward to see how this plays out as I'm sure Chris Briney will do an amazing job at adding flesh to the bones of Conrad's character arc. I only hope that Jeremiah's character development will also be drafted exquisitely, as it deserves after his growth as a mature and thoughtful young adult in this season. This sweet man deserves happiness and I was always a little unconvinced by the plot device in Book 3 to make him less appealing. I could fully get on board a parallel story where Jeremiah embraces Susannah's and Amelia Earhart's words, seeking new horizons geographically, spiritually and romantically ,separate from, but bonded by the love he shares with his brother and Belly. I look forward to what the future holds for all of them!

@@lamine428 interesting I never allowed for a time line. Hopefully it will go in this direction. The strike is over by the end of September or at least end of October. The third season was given the go by Amazon a few weeks ago. Jenny has taken this as an the opportunity to select the material from her book that will be featured in the 10 episodes. The music can be selected now. Production can be started in the Fall and run through the Winter seasons. The series could be ready to be aired by next July. Now if the strike a long one and the series can only be ready to be aired in July of 2025 that’s a different story. The “hi” that is now apparent in the present fan base would definitely be diminished. Would I personally take the time to watch season 3 in 2025 is questionable. I’d have to watch season 1 and 2 to get all those feelings again that I experienced at that time. Instead of waiting to 2025 I would probably just read the 3 rd book and move on.
