@@metametametametameta They did shrink. The land mass used to be significantly larger when Dinosaurs were around. That is why in parts of the ocean there are oil fields. Because that used to be swamps or dry land and they are now underwater. The gulf of mexico was largely land at one point. Then a meteor struck there. That's exactly right. Beaches erode when people build at the high tide mark because they stop the natural process which replaces the sand.

Buildings should never be built near the coast.
That's why in French Polynesia they still use tiki huts close to shore.... It's not that they can't afford to build something permanent, it's cause they know the shoreline and beaches are constantly changing, and that they will have to move their structures to stay out of the oceans way.

It's the ocean washing away that soft sand and dirt. As it does, it changes the floor of the ocean which changes the way and motion of the waves hitting the beach. In some cases it deposits more sand, in others, it takes it away.
Sad sight for Puerto Rico😢. I hope actions will be taken. In my country (PH), we also face same problems but we're able to cope up. We rehabilitate our beaches by destroying buildings built near the beach , built sea barricades, and applying dolomite (artificial) sands. Dolomite sands and peebles are effective to avoid erosion plus it have health and environmental benefits. I think it adds sands too(not sure). Moreover, we also have numerous hectares of reclaimation projects. I'm proud of my country's progress though we still have long way to go. Praying for Puerto Rico😊

This is Beach erosion. Throw boulders along the coastline. Sad part is that the government will remove the people living there and sell the land to developers

We face same problem too due to climate change. Our govt. actions are reclaimation areas, sea barricades, and applied dolomite sands (artificial sands). We rehabilitate our beaches too. So proud of our progress😊

A few comments to piggy back on your report: The increase in beach erosion has also been attributed to the recent (as in the past decade) hurricanes that have crossed our surrounding waters. These massive storms have destroyed the reef that once acted as a protective barrier against the ocean. And with no protective barrier comes higher water reaching land, and thus the effects we saw on the video. This will take MANY years to recover, as coral and reef only grow a few centimeters a year (if that).
You're right. Bad weather has exacerbated the problem. And in return, weather events will be harsher without the protection of the coast.
Louie that is what I was thinking, the storms greatly increased the speed in which the beaches were eroded. Does Puerto Rico have any type of beach replenishment program? We have to do beach replenishment here in Florida. Every year, we replenish the beaches that get washed out by major storms. This helps protect our coastlines and homes that are on the water.

Old timers, Indians, knew not to build. The water was always clean, there were two sets of reefs causing waves to break offshore. Then came the condos, and the houses. Then came the destruction of the dunes. Then came the dumping of fake sand on the beaches. This killed everything. The ocean turned murky. Now, the dredges take light sand from offshore and pump it on the beach. The reefs are covered with sand. The sand washes into the water and tints the water and clogs fish lungs. 1 storm, all the sand is gone, but Great Lakes makes $30 million and the CEO gets to buy another house in the Cayman Islands.

The foundations for structures built in sandy locations are usually pilings drilled or driven down to bedrock. It is called engineering.

On Long Island, east of NYC I've been walking the beaches for more than 50 yrs. and have witnessed the shocking changes. Man made projects have adversely affected the beaches here to a large degree. The natural ebb and flow of sand along the coasts has been disrupted, so every storm damages the coastline. This has been a known fact for a long time, but developers are allowed to make the fast money by building. I'm afraid most people just dont care enough.

This video while done with right intentions completely confuses erosion with sea level rise. What is happening here is erosion not sea level rise. Erosion happens everywhere. Once mountains stop forming they are right away slowly being chipped away through erosion until they completely disappear. The same thing happens with islands that were formed either through tectonic plate movements or volcanic activity, etc. The second they stop growing they are being eroded. This is the cycle of of life. While one life ends another is created. It's sad to see sometimes but that is what is happening to many older islands. Hawaii islands are for example much younger and are still growing in fact. Same with many parts of mainland like Florida. Remember the Al Gore film that predicted that Florida will be mostly gone by now due to sea level rise... guess what? Sea levels haven't risen and Florida is in fact growing in many parts as the sediment from mainland is being carried down south with the fresh water movement, which is why all of Florida is essentially a giant marsh or fresh water river system that is growing while mainland of USA is being eroded away.
Yeah, Jakarta for example is sinking, it has nothing to do with sea level rising but rather the weight of the city itself sinking the land.
It's actually a combination of both higher sea levels and land rising. Those melting ice caps result in higher sea levels...
in my country Chile, sea lever changes more from earthquakes than from any sea level rise....have not seen any significant rise by the way.
And just about 200 miles west is my state--Louisiana. We are losing marshland at an estimated rate of the size of a football field every 100 minutes. It's caused by multiple factors--sea level rise, land sinking due to dams being built up river which deprives the lower Mississippji river of silt and it's impacted by oil drilling also. There usually are multiple factors. It's not just "climate change". I don't like how climate change has just become this politicized catch all phrase. These issues are due to complex factors that are generally due to multiple things and don't have an easy answer.
@@tonibomani333 No, its not. I've been going to the same coast every year for decades here in South Africa, and there has been zero ocean level rise. If the ocean level is rising, it should be rising everywhere, but its not. All this talk of rising oceans is nothing but cherry picking the data to fit the fear mongering theory.
Erosion is not synonymous with rising sea levels. It's just erosion. Now, if the land is sinking, that's a different thing entirely but the whole section looks like one huge sediment mat so the question you should be asking is where'd the volcano go that's responsible for the very existence of your island. The "issue" is geologic in nature, not climate.

@Zaur Abkhazi Nice try, but I wasn't referring to the Solomon Islands (they got enough elevation to avoid the issue for decades) I was talking about Kiribati no cyclones, no volcano activity just sea level rise. Most of the island is already at sea level and ground salinity made agriculture not viable
@Zaur Abkhazi nobody is claiming that water is rising higher in some parts of the planet, the issue is most people wont see effects for decades because we can afford to lose 60 to 80 centimeters in most of the coastline regions of the world. But that same number is critical on low islands with no elevation

When sea level rises, it rises everywhere on the globe, not just one spot. Sea level has not risen anywhere else on the globe. I went the house I grew up in on an island off the Florida coast two years ago. My house was three feet above sea level then (60 years ago). It is still three feet above sea level. The bench suffered some erosion and had to be repaired.

@@josiefw9395 So, and I agree with you, and so, the seas are only rising in some places and not others? I was taught that water always finds its level. My theory is that people are pumping out the groundwater for industrial, home and farming use. When you pump water out, it creates a void that has to have something to fill it be it land or saltwater. In the case of land, it is going to subside and thus you get the effect of rising sea levels when it is not the case. Too many people at the tap draining the source. In Central California, the land has subsided over 11 feet in 20 to 30 years because of the almond groves. Almond use a lot of water to grow and then there are the farmers also pulling out the groundwater for their crops.

Playa Puerto Nuevo, Vega Baja. The same erosion, and it has been ongoing for decades. I saw this as a child and watched the beach disappear as homes fell into the shoreline. Thanks for raising awareness.

After moving from Puerto Rico in 2001 I notice that this is a very real issue every time I come to visit. The coast in my hometown of Humacao used to be noticeably further than it is today. I was shocked in my latest visits to find that the tides reached all the way to the edge of Highway 3. Some of my family's homes in Naguabo had to be abandoned as well. If things continue like this, they will need to bypass the highway and many other structures will also be affected.
I haven't seen those beaches for 40 years. What a difference. Thanks for making this video.
I remember seeing this similar situation in the late 80s rite across the border in Baja California. Buildings swallowed by the waters.
The ocean rising is not the issue .... it’s the land mass is sinking. Look at the Caribbean ocean topography. It tells the whole story.

The rain got stronger and larger that makes my place in philippines suffer an unexpected fast rising water while everyone is enjoying welcoming new year. It was 12:15am of jan 1 2021, pyrotecnics are the attraction in the sky and roads, within 1 hour the water depth reach to 5 feet. Again the rains return after seven days with the same volume of floodwater. Now two towns and five cities declared a state of calamity in negros occidental. Rain volume & high tide makes the flood even worse
If ocean level rise it will be globally. Not only at certain spots. Here at S.A. beaches there is no sign of sea level rises. The big problem is a lack of good planning when building at beach fronts.

They, those who harvest the sand from the ocean for so and so much to make concrete ect, are the reason the waters seem to be rising. Yes, you are correct. The land is sinking. Think about it. For decades they just take the ocean bottom. How long do they think they, the corporations, can take? They think forever, without consequences to the oceans......to the earth?

Mass extraction of sand depletes the sand in some areas but it does NOT explain sea level rise. Rising sea level is the result of global warming and one of primary concerns of our warming climate.

The data demostrate that overall sea level is rising faster than ever before. In some places is very obvious but in others not as much. Science is built on exact measurements, not necessarily on eye observations.

The actual sea level rise is around 3mm in five years. Look for other factors like strong and historically predictable tidal action for this specific erosion.

@@NJcruiser tell islanders in the South Pacific to "retreat" they have nowhere to go and so one of the less polluted places on earth will be one of the first to just disappear. Some of them are already beyond the point of no return with salinity levels on the grounds to high for any agriculture

I have been a diver here for 16 years, if the ocean rises one inch I’d know it, quit trying to scare people.
I would venture to say that most, if not all, of the erosion was caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria four years ago -- and not due to rising sea levels as the main factor.

@@maumor2 We already have waited at least 170 years. No significant change. There are forts built in the 1800s on coastlines all over the world. Maybe if you look hard you can find one where you claim the water is higher. In reality the earth sank below it. If the sea level changes nearly all of them would be flooded with the exception of a handful being someplace where the earth raised. Sea level rise is a fairy tale told to the sheep to get them to be good and follow the rules, and most importantly to "fear".
My family is from Puerto Rico and it's so terrible and sad to see this. PR is such a unique place to the rest of the world we must do what we can to protect this precious island! Thank you for the video and the awareness!
Don't have kids first and foremost then. Second, realize that the climate has been warming since the last ice age, and that rate is accelerating only slightly. Third, no politician with a tax bill is going to 'save the land'. It's not and will never be the huge crisis it's made out to be.

I just discovered your channel today. I like your reporting, your videos, the topics you report on which are extremely important for all of us Puerto Ricans. I feel we are slowly losing our island, our coasts due to government allowing all this constructions by our beaches which now are becoming just garbage structures contaminating them

This normally happens because of onshore drift , there is probably some sea defences further up the coast. East coat of England has exactly the same problem as the beach migrate up the coast where it is dropped . Not sea level rising.

The problem with shoreline erosion is that building close to ocean undermines the coastal ground structure due to un-natural water drainage and pressure on the sea shore.

In PR they build where ever they want there's no real building codes if there were they would not be able to live or build shacks near the beaches. They need to take care of their island and control the building or land jacking.
In Puerto rico, people build wherever they want. There is no building codes (actually there are building codes) but still, people still build everywhere especially around and near the beach. Stop the land jackink.
Kizer Vonzinger You are wrong. PR administrative laws are fashion very similar to the states. Puerto Rico is under federal jurisdiction. There are federal and “state courts,” similar to the states. There is a planning board, and the residents are required to follow building codes, just like the states. By the way, remember all the damaged to New Orleans, cities around the golf, and the east coast with severe hurricane damage and erosion, flooding etc. There are people everywhere that don’t follow the building codes etc.
we have construction codes here in PR but if you give money to the guy of the agency in charge of that they let you build ...with money you can build roaller coasters in the middle of the ocean ...money talks!!
It's not the sea level rising. The water hasn't gone up any. It's just eroded away the soil along the beach.

I live in Louisiana in the United States with brackish water, ocean water, and swamp water all around the state. The water level is the same as it has been since I can remember from 1989. My mother was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1949. The water level of the ocean is NOT rising! This video is a fear-mongering lie! Bad coastline building planning is most likely the problem here!
Yes, I live on the coast of Washington state. Water level is the same as it's always been. Yes. Glaciers are definitely melting, and have been at an accelerated rate for 30 years now..... but the water levels aren't rising.... They should have risen by half a foot by now, but they haven't risen at all, and I find this very interesting.

During that tenure I was on The Range Commanders Council Meteorology, wrote the base operations manuel, did the testing on sonic boom causes. The earths orbit carries us around the sun at the rate of 365 and 1/4 days a year, however, this cycle is not a perfect circle. Recent ice core samples have shown that over thousands of years temperature change has nothing to do with ozone, carbon emission or mankind because in the past readings were higher before man got here. So stop being an insulting little jerk and go back to your video games because this isn't one of them.

As a kid the beaches of Puerto Rico were my playground. From Condado to Rincon I have seen how much the Ocean has risen. I even have pictures to prove it. Rincon is a great example. I remember those beaches like the back of my hand. One area in particular around the Comunidad Estella the beach is no longer there. To this day I still can’t believe how fast it happened. It’s sad to say the least.
Mother Nature takes back what belongs to her. She doesnt ask for permission. People that live by beaches, forests & flood plain areas should have a 2nd home to use as a rental for back up.

Our island has been under erosion for many years but not just from the ocean Puerto Ricans please wake up we are under erosion under politics , spiritual erosion, Health erosion.

Erosion has been occurring for millions of years. That is why erosion prevention programs drag sand from the bottom of the seashore regularly and place it on what we call the beach shore. In many cases since the 1970's right in Puerto Rico as a matter of fact the entire shore across el Muro De la Puerta De San Juan was surrounded by rocks to prevent further erosion damage.

Yep, it just deposits somewhere else. I'd like to see the entire coastline of Puerto Rico compared over time. I'm sure there are areas where the beaches are increasing in size.

It’s interesting, I left Puerto Rico on 2008, I came back on 2018 after hurricane Maria and yes there is a huge change on the beaches an coast line, the beaches got shorter.
Hurricanes do cause beach erosion, but 1 hurricane would not cause the erosion you are seeing here. It takes many, many years to get to this point, for places prone to hurricanes. Maria was the worst storm is more than 20 years.. Climate change is whats causing beaches EVERYWHERE to disappear.
