Love the video Derek. Can you make another one showing what you are adjusting on top and how. I mean you explained it very well but I cant see what you are adjusting. Thanks. Keep up the great work Derek. Love your videos and the explanations behind them.
Thanks for the video course! I'm going to repair a clock now, but before I start I want to know if the anchor should flutter without a spring? If I move the anchor pin back and forth with tweezers, it jumps slightly. Is that enough force to turn the spring?
If the fork is in the correct place then the weight of the pendulum will stop flutter and it doesn’t need to turn the spring it just gives enough impulse to keep the clock going
@@torsiondell Thanks for your quick reply, (faster than I can read :-)) So if the fork doesn't flutter without a spring installed, does that mean that the clock is defective?
Very instructive, but I can’t see what you are adjusting an how. On the clock I’m working on (my first one), it ticks twice (the escapement clicks, the clicks again) then it tocs and the escapement clicks twice. What is going on? How can I rectify this? Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Keith Grey
Make sure the two hands are not touching, also could be a burr on a tooth or on a pinion leaf or even a bit of dirt, they are very fussy about friction, could be loads of things it’s just a process of elimination.

It depends upon the clock some have screw saddle some have friction fit saddle , and some have a pinch screw, when I did this video I didn’t get the full clock in the frame so I did another showing the saddle.
I have never noticed but I would presume that as steel expands when warm then that would cause the clock to speed up, I always use Horolovar torsion springs and they are temperature stable.
@@torsiondell Thank You ! Yes, I believe that is what's happening, overnight my clock seems to lose and during the day evens back up close to normal time but it is very slight and non-consistent so I couldn't tell for sure. However, I did thin down that suspension spring with fine sandpaper when I got the clock because it was gaining HOURS in a day!!! It certainly had a thick spring by the prior owner. It is a Schatz mini size. Thinning that spring may have made it more temp sensistive.
Thanks Ted I noticed I hadn’t got the top of the clock in the video after I posted it so I did a video on the different saddle’s again explaining what I do, have a look.
It should have a bit more than it did that was just to show you how to get it in beat easily, the supplementary arc should build on its own as it runs , probably 10 to 15%.
I made the mistake of adjusting the weights of the pendulum when i first got the clock that wouldn't spin. 😢😢😢😢. Can't for the life of me know what to do now.
@@torsiondell oh, mines a schatz 400 day clock and the spinning ball weights keep coming to a stop despite the torsion spring being set to max. Can't figure out what to do to get it to persist. I can start it spinning by hand so the escape wheel moves by the lever on the suspension spring. But after a short while it comes to a stop.
@@yabbaso then either it is out of beat or fork to high or low or there is some friction in the movement, have you stripped and serviced the movement?, if you have try lowering the the fork until the clock flutters ( drops more than one escape wheel tooth at a time ) then raise it up by 1mm.
