Another great video! Love that you showed a little bit of their new stuff and old stuff! But I want to talk about the elephant in the room and mention that Oli had "blown out his voice" on a few occasions (bleeding). It's the main reason he doesn't do Harsh vocals as much anymore. And probably the reason you didn't play anything from "suicide season" because you can practically hear Oli destroying his voice!
You're right, he hasn't done his voice any favors... BUT, lots of singers out there get cool sounds AND screw up their voices in the process!! The approach that I take here is to teach you how to achieve this level of grit, aggression, melodic approach and passion AND DO IT THE RIGHT WAY... PAIN AND BLOOD FREE!! :) There's a right and freeing way to do what you hear him doing... even if he himself doesn't actually do it :)
A lot of untrained vocalists have done this such as Tom kiefer from Cinderella and Cory Taylor from slip knot. Chris knows what can hurt your voice trust me and when your seasoned and not necessarily pro trained or clinically trained you can still have great voice. You just need to remember your vocal chords are a muscle and can be pushed too far. So absorb what Chris is saying and don’t ever try screaming without practicing and I suggest working with Chris because if you need instruction you won’t find a better Jedi master
@Trenton Leavitt He trained after he almost blew his voice completely recording Iowa (and he quit drinking). That's why his screams never sounded the same as until 2002, but on the other hand he can do it without bigger strain.
For me Oliver Sykes is the most enjoyable vocalist to listen to. I don't know why, but especially his style during BMTH's "There is a Hell..." and "Sempiternal" era is just so cool. Even nowadays, I've seen them live again in 2018 and 2019, his growls especially still sound absolutely amazing. Hope the band finds a way back to heavier and darker music, and he can find a way to sustain this style without hurting himself :) "Ludens" gave a glimpse of how well their older and their newer style can/could work together.
I couldn't agree more Oli is a genius, one of the most enjoyable vocalists to listen to. I don't think they will return to the darker stuff anytime soon, their new stuff is experimenting with new genres it's great imo.
Have you thought about having someone sit in with you during these videos and try to teach them the techniques? I would be interesting to see how you correct them, and mistakes that they make, so we can learn from that. Just an idea, maybe a short series of videos doing something like that? I was just watching your "1. WHERE YOUR VOCAL ENERGY REALLY COMES FROM" and I thought it was helpful seeing you teaching someone directly.
This is a great video Chris, I'm a singer with 5 years of experience but I still couldn't figure out what Oli and many other singers do at 12:15, and now finally I'm able to do that thanks to you! Its the kind of distortion I always looked for, and many of my friends have it naturally and after 5 years of trying I thought it was just something genetic.. apparently not! Thanks a lot!
This video is awesome. You got me nailing the brick by brick by brick line, and throw me to the wolves/throne really well. Your examples and style of coaching us into the pitch/scream is just incredible and always makes so much sense to me. I'm gonna invest in your course. You deserve all the support you can get from the RUclips community. :) Take care!
that man has a beautiful vocal tone, the only problem he keeps on facing is hitting those notes because of his past styles. he knows how to use his voice perfectly.
Probably one of the best vocal technique tutorial channels on the internet. For real man. Had the pleasure of going to Melissa Cross in person back in 2005 and I have been searching to find someone who puts out similar information where you're not tearing yourself apart. Thanks for this! It's helping me get my aggressive vocals back after 15 yrs out of the game
This video is FANTASTIC. I've been learning and practicing screams for years and this is BY FAR the most comprehensive video series i've seen on the subject. Keep on man, we all appreciate you greatly!!
Im happy to see someone who appreciates his diffrent styles and not just one people give him shit for his voice but he has laryngitis from all that screaming he did in the past

Awesome vid. Great dissection of technique and sound! Just saw BMTH live for the first time and they were awesome and really musically inspiring. Watching this was really helpful for the singing technique.
6:33 When u walk your dog and he's taking too long to find a spot to pee on. Great vid ! Thank you as always. Oli is my favorite singer next to Chester Bennington. Glad u already made vids on both of then ❤💞
There were a couple Moments in the Video where I started laughing like 4:16 but I really enjoyed the Video alot and I learned alot from it thank you Chris keep up the great Job you will blow up soon on RUclips i'm pretty sure 🤟
This helped a ton. I was using too much false chords and not enough compression, and couldn't get a melody going. Can you do a video on David Draiman from Disturbed? I'm starting to think it's all compression, but I can't do the low notes or even get anywhere near as clean. His voice during interviews are higher pitched and pure, I wonder if it's vocal layering or something, but he did sound of silence live so idk
I appreciate you doing this for us but I can only imagine sitting outside that room hearing you record this video lol “ShhhOoWWWWooooOwwww” Love it man!
I just recently, maybe within the past two days or so, gotten past the hurdle for pitchless fry screams. The way I finally found it was actually to drop the attempts to go so high before engaging distortion. My voice is pretty low, far lower than most of the screamy singers out right now, so I found it at a much lower note before it ever got comfortable.
I think most people judge Oli’s vocals based on fan videos filmed on phones. Being there live is vastly superior. He can scream, he can sing. IMO the only thing he struggles with is soft low’s (like the start of follow you). Listen to him sing their cover of ‘mood’, it’s perfect. He’s far from the perfect vocalist, he’s not 100% consistent and has off days, but what frontman isn’t? but he’s a frigging fantastic vocalist and frontman. He’s by far one of the most interesting and talented vocalists around. He’s been doing this since he was a daft kid using techniques that really weren’t helpful. He’s been on the right path for years now. Longer than most think. He’s a legend.
I'm very into Oliver's voice lately and Chris Liepe never disappoints! I'd like to see your take on Ronnie from FIR and Heafy from Trivium (I'm thinking Beyond Oblivion era)
Tim McIlrath from Rise Against woud be awesome ! This singer sings actually quite high but he gets this dark timber I cannot find where to place it ! Thanks for all
@@bulletproofprs True lol, but that was from his screaming though. I'm more interested in his style of singing (even if his screams were badass back in the day)! 😊
Add a little boy caricature into your voice and you'll probably land pretty close to Bert. Not meant in a negative way at all -- I love playing around with a Bert-ish sound.
I got pretty close recently by belting high notes with some vocal fry in there, but kind of "freeing up space" for me to access a mix up in that range, at the same time as using a lot of vocal cord compression with that afore mentioned vocal fry, it allowed me to alternate between clean notes and distorted notes using no more than a slight intensity change, then somewhere along the lines it "fell" into false cord instead of vocal fry, kind of like my vocal fry helped me find my false cords xD great videos man! you really know what your talking about, and it was curious to see you recommend similar things!

Adrian used way more of yelling. Marcus uses fry screams for his screams 100% of the time. You can even see it live, Adrian screamed super loud (if compared to his clean parts) while Marcus screams quieter than his cleans (live). I would say, I like Adrian on screams but Marcus on cleans. I don’t like how Marcus does screams, sounds too poor and quiet and “fake” live
