    How does Oliver Sykes move so seamlessly between clean singing and screaming? It's an art and a specific skill in and of it self!! He's also an extra expressive and dynamic vocalist! As we take a close look at his technique, you'll discover some pretty simple and practical ways that you can merge what he does into your own singing and expand your vocal toolbox without causing strain or pain! We'll use real studio recordings as examples to learn from!

    Another great video! Love that you showed a little bit of their new stuff and old stuff! But I want to talk about the elephant in the room and mention that Oli had "blown out his voice" on a few occasions (bleeding). It's the main reason he doesn't do Harsh vocals as much anymore. And probably the reason you didn't play anything from "suicide season" because you can practically hear Oli destroying his voice!

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 года назад +138

      You're right, he hasn't done his voice any favors... BUT, lots of singers out there get cool sounds AND screw up their voices in the process!! The approach that I take here is to teach you how to achieve this level of grit, aggression, melodic approach and passion AND DO IT THE RIGHT WAY... PAIN AND BLOOD FREE!! :) There's a right and freeing way to do what you hear him doing... even if he himself doesn't actually do it :)

      A lot of untrained vocalists have done this such as Tom kiefer from Cinderella and Cory Taylor from slip knot. Chris knows what can hurt your voice trust me and when your seasoned and not necessarily pro trained or clinically trained you can still have great voice. You just need to remember your vocal chords are a muscle and can be pushed too far. So absorb what Chris is saying and don’t ever try screaming without practicing and I suggest working with Chris because if you need instruction you won’t find a better Jedi master

    • @SerjBassist
      @SerjBassist 4 года назад +15

      @Trenton Leavitt He trained after he almost blew his voice completely recording Iowa (and he quit drinking). That's why his screams never sounded the same as until 2002, but on the other hand he can do it without bigger strain.

    For me Oliver Sykes is the most enjoyable vocalist to listen to. I don't know why, but especially his style during BMTH's "There is a Hell..." and "Sempiternal" era is just so cool. Even nowadays, I've seen them live again in 2018 and 2019, his growls especially still sound absolutely amazing. Hope the band finds a way back to heavier and darker music, and he can find a way to sustain this style without hurting himself :) "Ludens" gave a glimpse of how well their older and their newer style can/could work together.

      I couldn't agree more Oli is a genius, one of the most enjoyable vocalists to listen to. I don't think they will return to the darker stuff anytime soon, their new stuff is experimenting with new genres it's great imo.

I would be interesting to see how you correct them, and mistakes that they make, so we can learn from that. Just an idea, maybe a short series of videos doing something like that? Can you do a video on David Draiman from Disturbed? I'm starting to think it's all compression, but I can't do the low notes or even get anywhere near as clean. His voice during interviews are higher pitched and pure, I wonder if it's vocal layering or something, but he did sound of silence live so idk

    I just recently, maybe within the past two days or so, gotten past the hurdle for pitchless fry screams. The way I finally found it was actually to drop the attempts to go so high before engaging distortion. My voice is pretty low, far lower than most of the screamy singers out right now, so I found it at a much lower note before it ever got comfortable.

    I got pretty close recently by belting high notes with some vocal fry in there, but kind of "freeing up space" for me to access a mix up in that range, at the same time as using a lot of vocal cord compression with that afore mentioned vocal fry, it allowed me to alternate between clean notes and distorted notes using no more than a slight intensity change, then somewhere along the lines it "fell" into false cord instead of vocal fry, kind of like my vocal fry helped me find my false cords xD great videos man! you really know what your talking about, and it was curious to see you recommend similar things!

    How to sing like Oliver from BMTH:
    1. Find yourself your own Jordan Fish
    2. Add a lot of effects to hide that you can't sing
    3. Be pretty.

    Perhaps how to sing like Austin Carlile? Kinda the sams concepts as Oli and Sam Carter but he still has one of the best screams in music

    I second the recommendation of Ronnie Radke or even Craig Mabbit.
    Craig has some of the best sounding vocals in the game and they're, in fact, what got me and I'm sure others into continuing him and his music. He and Ronnie both have a very unique sound to them and their music.
