Personally I work with the epoxy and I slightly unscrew the nut on the hinge to remove stress on the hinge.
Yeah that's also what I do too, unscrew the hinge nut just a tad so that the screen opens a bit easier.
ı use super glue and put baking soda on it.. it stick perfect like cement when i baking soda on it

Personally I use JB Weld and have had huge success with it. Most of the broken hinged laptops generally come from students who just trash their laptops in their school bags. JB Weld always solves my hinge problems. Haven't had one come back yet unless its for a board repair.
I do a same before seeing Sorin magic with hotglue and than switch to that. Main reason - it's far easier to work with same laptop again in case of some different failure. Like he show it here, just a little heat. And even if it go around screen cable or anything else is solvable in alcohol and easy to remove, something we can't say for epoxy resin

@@monkeymindfrance8356 BIOS settings will reset if you remove main battery. You can see even in this video that bios was reset because he remove battery. ISo if laptop still doesn't post after removing it there is some other problem with it.
@@gorjy9610 Well, duh, when you use epoxy resin you disassemble everything and restore the original screw mounting points. You don't just go crazy like with the hot melt glue. 😉😁

It's the way it is. Customer not always right. But we as shop owners always make sure the customer is happy .

I think the problems with the hinges are starting with the hinge shafts become too tight.
So when I repair a broken hinge mount, I always loose a little bit the nut of the hinge shaft.
Love the channel, love your trouble shooting methods and business plan. I will be using your hot glue ideas. I retired from mechanical repair (auto and industrial) so electonics is just a hobby. In the mechanical field it is much the same, company knowledge is a big secret, the use of unmarked and special parts very common. It is very discouraging when companies don't use standardized parts that would work and deliberately design things so only their part fits. The worst is when they have their suppliers leave off markings on common parts. Many an unmarked bearing and seal I have measured and replaced with it's marked replacement from the same manufacturer. It was not that bad when I started in the automotive field starters and alternators were repaired with parts. Now they are replaced as a unit. It is getting to be component replace only. It is quickly getting into the industrial with electronic software only available to the company repair people. Works great when you have fly some one into a remote location to fix a machine that has been down for a week, tying up the job site. All it required was a reset with a laptop with the right software. Oh and that software only runs on that authorized laptop. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK SORIN. Sorry for the long rant.
Hot glue can't let you down. I already fixed some laptops with this method. Works like a charm, solid like a wall. Thank you Sorin for this valuable information. Learning something new everyday.

@@monkeymindfrance8356 main battery is bios battery. Bios password cant be removed with clearcmos.
@@monkeymindfrance8356 code for memory failure. Try diferent ram module, or without if some ram is onboard. Bios recovery is posible, hold b or v during poweron, with usb drive containing bios. Find it on hp support.
@@monkeymindfrance8356 well, its no good. I can say that on some hp machines bios recovery can take so long, like minute or two, even a bit longer. And sometimes i succeed after multiple tries, or reset. Is it same code without ram? Is it same if you disconnect everything like lcd, batt...? Did you get backlight anytime during bios recovery?

I have now done a systematic check up.
The result is the same for everything i have try (3 long 2 short blinking led)
-start without battery
-start only with battery
-start with both battery and sector
-start without lcd
-start without ssd
-start without ram
-start without ram and ssd
-start without wlan card
-start without card reader
-start without speaker
i have try to start it without keyboard and i did get the blinking code anymore but it was only because the signal that make blinking the led on the keyboard could not reach it anymore still black screen.
-try to flash the bios multiple times with a usb key but still nothing, the same code at the start (3l 2s).
i don't really understand what you mean by backlight but when i turn it on each time the screen change color very lightly for a very brief moment and stay that way, the difference is almost unperceptible.

I used to use 2 part epoxy for jobs like that. But now i am with you sorin hot glue is better faster and reversable.

for me before i use any kind of glue or do any repair , first i remove the original cause of the problem, i open the hinge a little which makes the laptop smooth in open and close and then i decide what should i do , by this method i guarantee a lifetime repair with 0 return back , thank you sir for the video .

My method that I have used for some years is to drill through the plastic and use a 2.5 or 3 mm screw through. I file the head and paint it in the colour of the plastic. This is stronger than anything and hard to see if well made.
Interesting technique, I might have to try that method one day, thanks or sharing.
I highly recommend SunFix for hinge repaira. Takes a while to dry but fixes very good 👍🏻
Tried it and it was a complete failure. I've also worked on laptops where they used it to fix them and they came to me because that porous thing failed not so long after. It's also messy while mixing the 2 clays together. I dislike it a lot. 😁 Better get the hot glue, otherwise do it with properly tested hard epoxy glue.

In Trinidad i use Dunlop contact cement glue or evo stick glue. It’s the type of glue that can be used to stick anything like shoes, etc.

I like hot glue or JB weld depending on how much metal there is to adhere to. And how rigid it needs to be, if it needs to flex then hot glue but if its a long semi-structural piece, then JB Weld since there is no pressure

I can do it I did it for 5 times and nobody is come back. Only to fix something else. Because the laptops still are working great.
So like, my laptop had this place for the screw just crumble into pieces and now the case is just hanging only on few screws... What do you think? ;/
Maybe it would be better before close the back lid to blow some air into laptop's fan and radiator, because, you know, since this procedure, it will be harder to clean out the dust inside..

I've always used Super Glue and baking soda to bond the screw inserts in their original positions (to make future repairs possible), but that method takes a LONG time to complete. Sorin's hot glue method is much faster, and I can always use hot air to get back in, so I think I'm going to give it a go...

@@monkeymindfrance8356 According to support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c02693833 you hold the Windows + V keys, then press the power button for 2-3 seconds, then release the power button while still holding Windows + V. If that doesn't work, I'd take the battery out and hold the power button for 30+ seconds. Good luck!

how would you approach replacing a keyboard that is held on to the palm rest by heat stakes? would hot glue workk there too - or too close to the keyboard membrane?

I have 35-40c ambient and can go up to 47-48c but humidity is low.
Haha.... we can go up to 40c with 90 to 100% humidity where I live. Aircondioners are a must here in Darwin Australia. It's a very tropical and hot environment.
There's a better way to fix this problem. You can use the soldiering iron to fix the bases of screws on the plastic after it you need probably a littel bit longer scrwe, they were by the factory with heat fixed 😉 try it Sorin and good luck 👍🏻
Only problem is that people do not do maintenance to laptops. If they keep screws tight there will be way less hinges problem and it is so ease to do it!

I glue the hinges in my laptops BEFORE they have a chance to break, i have never had 1 laptop with failed hinges ever!

The heat inside bakes the cheap plastic, it becomes brittle and then one day it just crumbles like a cookie. 😉 Also, manufacturers used to put metal stress-relieving plates around the hinges' mounting points in the past - no more.

Cheapest dollar store works just fine, key is only the melting hot temperature. :)

In my country it gets up to 45°C. when I watched this video I remembered the video when you showed that poster "hot glue hero" they were making funny of you. They know nothing poor people.
It also helps to put some oil/grease/wd40 on the hinge so it works more smooth and clean the area you put hot glue with alcohol for better bonding
Say Sorin: wouldn't your hot glue hold better if you scrubbed the plastic a bit with sandpaper? I only say this for difficult cases, but since you only have a one percent return rate I doubt you need to. I learn from your methods and have found when I use them the job is not "dodgy".
I think you can calibrate the hinges, I mean, adjust the presure on it, maybe the hot glue could be a better result,
Sorin - What hot melt glue sticks do you use? I have used cheap hot melt sticks from "The Range" with a cheap glue and either the glue sticks, the glue gun or both are shite!
Much appreciated, going into details like that , thank you again ;) Hot glue sticks, therer are different qualities, and different "hardnesses" do you have a choice of quallity :type there that suits you better ? I had success using hot glue stoicks for hinge indeed (thanks the precedent videos for this ) ; I noticed it may be important to unscrew a little the hinge so it moves more freely. While repairing the first hinge, I give some freeness at the other too so it is not pushing so hard on the case (all hinge tend to get a bit stuck in time are not they ? )

the hot glue u use is a good quality there are many quality of hot glue if u use a cheap one expect it to break so fast
I've used the dollar store cheapest no name glue, no issues for years and years of repairs.

@@ghostbiker7391 I get mine for 0.25€ a pop. I noticed that the older batches of sticks were more translucent and soft/flexible. Looked just like what Sorin is using. Newer ones a more murky white and harder, not as strong but still get the job done. Hope these observations help you pick something new to try out. I've seen extra strong results with some Akfix sticks, but they're *hella* expensive compared to the usual suspects. 😁 At their price I'd better go for a JB Weld epoxy.

There is a genuine Amtech flux distributor in UK, no point of ordering all the way from the US.
HOt glue qualities They are showing different qualities, some being transparent but not very supple nor tacky, a table shows the possible choices. They also state good quamlity have no bubbles and smell good, poor quality is more yellowish, and smell. I have no knowledge in this, but I noticed professional electricians use hot glue to install cables indoors and outdoors, they always have good brand glue sticks. ANy pointers would be helpful there (sorry, you go deep into details, I go deeper ;) ! Best regards and a nice day ;)
P.S. I use animal "hide glue" for pianos repairs, and there are many types and different qualities, that can be mixed to obtain longer gelliyng time, more or less retracting glue, suppleness, etc (indeed no way to glue metal or plastic with thoses, but my understanding about properties and qualities comes from there )

I would guess 90%, not everything can be fixed.

I am sure that this is built in planned obsolesce by design. These manufacturers don't want the customer to keep their laptops working for 5+ years, so they purposely create this crappy bad design so that it purposely fails after around 3 years. I've had many a cheap laptop over the years such as Lenovo, HP, Acer and they all fail with a bad hinge. What I do now is as soon as I have bought any cheap laptop for myself or for my friends or relatives etc is I open it up and slightly loosen the nut on the hinge. This makes the screen open a bit easier but more importantly it reduces the stress on the hinge. The best solution though is to simply pay more for a premium laptop with a all metal chassis.

I guess, glasfiber with epoxy resin should work.

The trick with hot glue, is make glue so hot it becomes liquid and transparent , the let it cool peacefully
Just a tip for anyone repairing a laptop hinge. If one of the brass inserts pulls out of the moulded plastic you can put it on the tip of a soldering iron and re-melt it back into the plastic.
*the tip of someone else's soldering iron....

sir ..many times i try this method for hinge but no success .......iam using fevicol xpoxy ,,,mix well use well wait 5 hour ,,,,,,,
as he says ... you have to use it with a hot air gun .. the regular glue gun doesnt heat it enough .. watch how he does it ..
if everything fails .. try some other source of hot glue sticks ... someone above in the comments mentioned .. some low quality glue goes not work well

I think 26 degree is like winter here in Bombay,India.
26 is simply no-ting. Last week it was 120°f at my house. That is 49°C. That is a lot my holder of the faith. Killed my porch plants out of the sun.
Sorin, you are not giving the original hinge enough justice, it held up for years, probably, hot glue will probably last a similar amount of time.

Yes, notably some of the the HP (consumer) line have criminally badly designed hinges construction.

@@Alex-mj7km You don't pay for strength, you pay for specs. What else would happen? No such thing as free lunch, so they have to make a compromise somewhere. 🤷♂️ This is why old timey Celeron laptops had tough chassis, but were twice as expensive as todays cheapest. No magic, just simple math.
Hot glue is not very good when device is running hot. I use it but only sometimes, kafuter proved to be stronger solution.

i use super glue and cotton or baking soda to retain the original design. but too messy.
Wound bandage tape soaked with super glue works well. I avoid the soda - it dries fast, but it fails to bond well/strong with plastics. Fan blowing air over it speeds up the process, but it's still not fast enough.

@@seckinseckin3919 Me too, but mine becomes too brittle for hinges when I mix it with baking soda, the brand is Jeep. Without the soda it's strong. What brand are you using and for how long does it hold the hinges with no cracks?
