    Not only do hinges break, but sometimes the customers themselves come unhinged. :)

    Does your boss give in to violent customers? It's kinda unreasonable. It happened out of guarantee and it's another hinge. Your boss should have refused. Allowing this is like an invitation for it to repeat. You are a very calm man, Sorin. What do you do to stay that calm?

    Usually hinges get seized due to dust and usage and sometimes loosening thightness won't do a magic trick so usually if those are available I replace them with new set, whole pair. I have only one complaint to this repair. Hotglueing hinges is not repair for my standard. If possible I offer replacing parts if they are available, if not I usually weld parts together. Most laptop cases are made from common plastic that has widely available filler and usually after welding whole part starts acting like new and holds well. In some specific cases I do use glue but not a hot glue rather industrial one which costs 100$ for small tube but this stuff is so strong that when case breaks again it cracks and splits everywhere else but the glued spot. Cons of that glue? It cures in 48hrs so you have to take your time but so far I haven't seen any laptop that was repaired that way back plus it's so thick that you can basically shape it in the air so in the end no dremel or file to make final fit, you can do wonders with it. Heck I even glued back screen cover of my inspiron which I slam shut at least 30 times a day in the last two years and this stuff still hold very well. Of course I don't give any warranty to customer for glued parts, sorry.

    Had somebody come in for hard drive failure back before ssd. I told him his CD drive was very badly damaged and suggested a replacement. He said "I'm on my way there". He got there and and said "Let me show you". He hammerfisted the top of the computer hard and the cd tray popped out. 😳😳 I opened the computer, pulled out the new drive, put the old drive back in and told him to take his computer and have a nice day.
    I avoid customers that are unreasonably rough on computers.

    A bit slower and more time consuming, but I use putty/plasticine whateva to build a small suitable container on the plastic, fill it with quick cure epoxy, and I just let the brass insert screwed onto the hinge metal thingy sink in.

    Some people are rough with laptops, closing them and opening them often rather than just pressing the button (my kid does this), being too rough especially when it's showing signs of problems. Your hinge will eventually pack it in, the rougher you are the sooner it will happen.
    For my own laptops I order a new hinge.

    • @yeahright9014
      @yeahright9014 2 года назад +2

      Yes. Although, it's USUALLY because people open or close the screen from a corner, which will put all the stress onto the hinge and mounting of that side, instead of from the center of the screen. However, its almost never the hinge that fails, but rather the plastic "stalks" that the hinge's screws' crowns are attached.

    • @FixTechStuff
      @FixTechStuff 2 года назад +1

      @@yeahright9014 Yes, from my experience hinges can go a bit tight and people continued to lever the screen down from the very top and broke the plastic mounts.
      A new hinge from AliExpress or eBay can make a big difference, even if some of the mounts are broken. It does end up being a bodge, but a bit of silicone (or perhaps glue) in the right places and let it cure will help.

    Where else can a customer go and pull the kind of tricks they do at a repair shop? Have you ever seen a dentist's office except half the money that they ask for? Have you ever gone to a doctor's office, and afterward said that you weren't really happy and you weren't going to pay? There are two shops in my little town, and both of us the owners are good friends. The stories that we get are absolutely incredible. So I know what you're going through. The hinges one is a new one on me though!
    So you go to the car mechanic with a flat tire. You ask them to fix the flat tire, and even though the other three and the spare tire are fully inflated and have tread and are okay, you ask them to fix those as well.
    If the customer is going to come back in 2 years and complain about something that you didn't even fix, then you may as well charge them for fixing five flat tires, even though only one is flat!

    Sorin, could you maybe help me with some advice with my problem?
    It's about old HP laptop. First of all the battery on laptop is dead for the last 5+ years so basically it's only working when it's connected to power supply(aka. charger).
    Yesterday I tried to start the laptop but it starts to boot and starts to spin the fan for 2-3 seconds and then just shuts down. It doesn't even get into bios or anything.
    Could it be that charger is not good anymore? Could it be the charging port problem? Or motherboard?
    Do you have any advice where I should look at first? Sadly I don't have power supply at home to test with power supply instead of charger.
    Thank you in advance to you or anyone else who could give some advice.
    Thanks for the great content, cheers! :)

    • @Pancajayna
      @Pancajayna 2 года назад +1

      If you have a multimeter, you can at least test the charger to see if it is supplying the proper voltage. It is rare but can happen where the voltage is fine but the current isn't. If you can open the laptop you can remove the BIOS battery and ground off the negative and positive battery terminals on the board to reset the BIOS. Replace the battery if it is bad. Remove and clean the RAM before putting it back in. These things you can do yourself.

    • @entertainmentguy4509

      I never fixed any laptops with hot glue. If customer comes complaining about broken hinge, I give him/her the price to replace the plastic housing, regardless of how expensive it could be. If the customer does not accept, can go somewhere else, I won't fix it with glue. The only times I used hot glue is when the hinge is already broken, but you only see it when you disassembly the laptop for a different reason, and of course I can not ask the customer any money to fix it.

    If the hinge had a faulty repair, why did it take 2 years for him to come back, ie, it would've been flapping in the breeze for years.
    If the hinge broke in the first place, NOT due to abuse, that's more a manufacturers design problem. Basically he's now asking for the old non faulty hinge to have be repaired to a high level of strength, when it wasn't broken.

      Yes. Why not? The only alternative would be to possibly find a replacement bottom shell of that exact model, which is next to impossible, in most cases. I repaired a laptop for a customer where the power jack had been mounted by the manufacturer onto two millimeter-wide plastic stalks, which bent inwards after multiple insertions of the power cable, pushing the jack along with it. I had to break off the bent plastic, and replace the jack with a screw-type. Yes, it adds a very small (less than 1 mm) protuberance on the outside of the plastic shell, but will NEVER fail.

    You can"t fix something that's not broke.
    That is a separate job so I would charge them again.
    Have a great day!!

    The better solution is to open your laptop from the center, rather than from one side and you will never have a broken hinge.

    Bloody chancers, instead of playing the blame game, why couldn't they just say, I broke the other one, can I pay to fix this one please? ESPECIALLY after the amount of time you did the first fix.

    i would always stay away from sony laptops, not because of the hinge but just the laptop itself is not good, like all their products they over charge for it. i know hinges can go with any laptop

    Good morning, Mr. Sorin, don't worry, ignorant people are everywhere such a person cannot rationally explain anything, because he won't understand anything anyway. Regards.

    I would return this piece of rubbish back to the customer and told them never to return to this shop. If customer wants to cause problem to you and blame you, he/she is not worth your time. Teach them a lesson!
