When I was young, I did work on an Intel Motherboard and Motorola boards making factory. After the boards are made, they put it in a conveyor that looks like a big washer machine and they use Cascade to clean the boards. After the dry cycle, it looks perfect. From that experience, if I really need to clean a board, I just put in my dishwasher with Cascade soap. Be sure to have the hot dry selected.
Another example, I was one day pushing a boat on the water and I forgot my pager, an electronic device to receive messages back in the 90's. What I did immediately was take the battery out, rinse it with fresh water, look for a paper cup in the trash and dunk the device inside the clean water for the entire day that I was out in the boat. The reason was to prevent the salt from drying and creating corrosion. When I get home, I take it out, rinse it in water one more time and dunk the device in alcohol to push the water out. After letting it dry for 3 days in the direct sun on my car dashboard, it did work perfectly without any issues.
Water by itself doesn't really create damage, it is the minerals or the water contents that interact with the electricity.
That reminds me of an experiment that I did with aluminum foil in a salt water aquarium sump. I put the aluminum foil under water, and no harm was done to it. After a number of days, I brought it out of the water and let the salt water dry on it, and it was full of holes after it dried. I put it back under the water, and no more corrosion took place.
Thank you Sorin, being an IT guy with his own shop from 14 years and 30 years worth of software and hardware knowledge, but not electronic. Getting enough courage will broad my shop services, in times like this makes the difference. As you said in another video we have to surrender to electronics fault as a repair shop, but i'm trying hard to make an inversion and dive into this world.

I cleaned my laptop motherboard with water and then dried it in a fan oven at 60-70 degrees Celsius now working like a charm
This is a good teaching one for me.. I like to kind of jump in with both feet sometimes..
If you put water on the board to remove sugar you then need to get a paper towel or something to soak it up. If you just apply heat to evaporate it you WILL NOT have removed the sugar. At best you might have spread it around more thinly.

i heard from some else to always remember if you are disconecting the display make sure the battery is disconected first because those pins have voltage whether you push the power button or not. to avoid shorted display when removing take it out.

I noticed that you "cleaned" the board by adding water and then you scrubbed the area with a toothbrush, then dried the area with hot air. You really need to wet the area and then wipe/blot the water off, or flush the area well with water. Otherwise you are not removing the sugar/salt that was dissolved in the water. You are just spreading it around. I have spent many hours watching your videos and find them extremely informative and interesting. I have a pile of older laptops that I hope to restore with your the help of your videos just to see if I can do it. Thanks for sharing your troubleshooting methods.

When I use water to clean sticky boards and connectors, I always rinse the area well and soak up the excess with Kimwipes. Then, I spray the area with 99% isopropyl before using a blower for drying, cool air at first then, warm. I find that the alcohol dissolves into whatever water is left behind and helps the evaporation when the blower is used.

When I was doing my apprenticeship, for liquid damage, I was taught to use water and soap to wash the entire board and then allow the board to sun dry or we could use a fabricated incubator made from gallon and old high watts lightbulbs(cos of the heat it generates), after which we test
Works like 95% percent of the time we used it.

You can wash water damage residue off using water. Or better yet, demineralized water. The water should be taken off using a paper towel, so you're actually removing the water and the dissolved minerals. Residual moist you can dry off with hot air. After that, clean with alcohol. The alcohol will repel all traces of water left behind. Dry again and then test the board.
The power button circuit with the serial resistor, the pull-up resistor and their values are probably straight from the super-io's manufacturer's datasheet. They will protect the super-io in case accidentally a voltage of up to 5V or so gets applied to that switch line. For normal operation, you only need a pull-up resistor. Anything from 1K to 100K is fine.
So basically what sorin did was to replace that SIO pull up resistor which was altered in value, and then he removed the other resistor in line on the switch as it was acting as a divider so he finally left the 1k resistor. or am i wrong?

So thing to remember from this episode: 1. Always check if cleaned connectors are really clean and dry, 2. Don't loose removed elements in case it's not a fault - You don't want to modify schematics :)

Hello, 👋👋👋the best for cleaning pcb after flooding, especially those with visible corrosion, is demineralized water, and after washing it is best to use isopropanol alcohol, which will displace the residual water from the smd components, best regards.🙏🙏🙏
nope. disagree. "it is best" to replace computer entirely LOL. Seriously, any water is fine but preferably not tap water. the waters not on the board long, is dried quickly and even it could cause any negative effect, it will be so long in manifesting and minor that the whole laptop would have been recycled before any negative affects were even slightly prominent by cleaning it with water. but it must be fully dried. like anything electronic with water on it.
At the end I dont understand well the problem. You replaced the resistor near by the super io and you took out the one on the same line near to the power on Button. So the problem was this 2 resistors?
I have seen some your videos and they have helped me a lot. But I have a laptop 2 years old and the battery went bad, it is puffed and will not work anymore. I have changed the battery and the power charger, the charging port and nothing is working. Could you help me?

carefully placed ACTEONE melts the ABS heat-staked keyboard supports. no need for heat or drills etc. When the keyboard shield is carefully raised, stake by stake, the abs will form to the shape of the shields mounting hole. that way, after repair you can re-locate the keyboard shield on the original stake posts and then use solder iron to seal down once more. all original materials. only half the aggro. :)

I use a water pick for teeth for cleaning sometimes.
I saw someone on RUclips undo the plastic welds on the back of a keyboard with a heat gun and gentle lifting pressure, takes a while to do but means no grinding welds, along with not having to replace entire palm rest. Yes water for sugary drink spills on circuits is the best especially for Cola.

I also remember a YT video where a solder iron at minimum temperature was used (he could touch the tip with a finger without getting burned). He just pressed each end of the ribbon cable to the PCB.
I tried this on a modern HP laptop and instantly melted the casing, so if you're gonna try this be very careful

My Lenovo T60 has complete failure to load bios. The technician everything but nothing happens. What can be the issue? Can it be the bios chip?
The thing that if you buy a new phone and they don't give you a new charger, as if it is "enviroment friendly". The thing is, i bought a new samsung A33 and it needs a new charger with a usb-c connector to be able to charge with 25w. All other old ones, even which support even more than 25w, charge the phone only using 15w. As i understand, the usb-c connector on the charger is sending a signal to the phone, that a more powerful charger is connected, and if a charger does not have this contact in the connector or is disabled, than you are stuck with slow charging or you need to get a new charger anyway, which means that "enviroment friendly" is a scam . The thing is that, for example, Xiaomi phones that i had ( 9 pro, 11 lite), did not have this kind of problem.

Am using glass cleaner liquid and after this i clean it with Alcohol. Also glass cleaner liquid is good to clean ink from ink printers, because have some acid and acid is the only thing that clean ink.
I mix IPA and water 60/40 and it works great for cleaning.

Best thing is to use demineralised water aka Deionised water or sterile water. In the chance that if you missed drying a part of the board, it doesn't short circuit because its the metals in the water that act like a wire. Mineral water contains, you guessed it, Mineral. Although okay if you're sure you've got rid of all the water it's okay to use.
Maybe use pressurised air to remove all traces of water for example under some SMD components.
I saw a well known PC youtuber power up a fully submerged motherboard in deionised water and it powered up and booted. Crazy thing.
I also saw a car repair youtuber that cleaned some liquid damaged ecu's of a car with water. He had an inline deioniser or demineraliser. Whatever you want to call it.

It doesn't matter that much because any contaminants on the board will "mineralise" the water and turn it into electrolyte. As long as anything potentially conductive and corrosive is removed it's fine. just need a lot of water and maybe even start with soapy water. I use plain water (as long as the water is not too hard) and liquid soap with ultrasonic cleaner and it works just fine. Of course you dry with hot air very thorouly.

Iso alc is good for cleaning off flux spatter or greasiness. but not gonna make a difference to water residue deposits. bottled water is good as it's also filtered and contains none of the flouro and calcium etc. Drying the water right away is good. if you want "minerals" removed you'll need a surfactant. then it becomes more 'polish than product' which eventually will not make a difference as the effects are at worst, negligible. distilled water is for plants, steam irons and lead acid batteries, as it wont 'fur' up the cells. Truth is, even rainwater is better than tap water. and after drying, there's no negative to the repair or longevity. bottled water is perfectly fine for cleaning and drying. it's not going to be on the board long anyway.

No circuit diagram makes it hard and if that is a blown MOSFAT (resistor) you are passing that voltage directly to the cpu unregulated . Test capicitors for short ! Then if no diagram you can pass a very small amount current to the device and look at it through infared camera . The MOSFAT that is bad will show heat . But it powers on briefly, that would imply its not a short . In this case it would be more likely overheating but its doing it very fast usually a device would get farther if not all the way booted up before shutting down .
You can safely spray the board with alcohol. I've never had a short circuit on 90 boards.

The reason sugar dissolves better in water than it does in alcohol is due to the polarity of water and non polarity of alcohol.

It is actually a very good idea to remove sugar(sweet) liquid damage with water! But THEN... instead of drying the water with the hot air (which still may contain sugar that doesn't evaporate), remove water with... alcohol :-}. Alcohol has almost indefinite ability to absorb water (with or without sugar) and still being an alcohol. And it evaporates very quickly - much quicker than water...
Any experience with Soviet quartz watch circuit boards? I finally nailed the Chaika big blue of my dreams, spring bar broke and it hit the deck and now its intermittent operation :( Really quite cheesed off with it as the mechanical and motor side work perfectly, all traces/solder joints are good but I can't get it to work continually :(

I think that once you dissolved the sugar in water you should have soaked up the water with a paper towel or sponge before drying the board with the hot air. If not, the sugar will just be redistributed on the board and may cause problems.
Yeah, I thought that too! I guess that once dissolved and spread around a bit, the conductivity of whatever sugars remained were reduced enough to not be an issue any longer. Still, I would be inclined to soak them up and, get them right off the board.
Incidentally, I have encountered similar issues with the "no-clean flux" products. Sure enough, when bone dry that stuff is a great insulator but in a humid setting, I find that it readily becomes conductive. I suspect that airborne pollutants land on the moisture softened flux and, that those pollutants are the conductive culprits. Think of a seafront environment for example with all that moist, salt ladened air! Might as well spray the whole board with an electrolyte.
Shouldn't the board get rinsed after the sugar gets dissolved? Otherwise the sugar would remain once the water evaporates. I guess what happened is that the sugar got distributed on a larger area.

Elec Techs like me always use iso alcohol !
I was told to never clean or touch a PC board with water, use only denatured alcohol. Because the stuff used on these boards is water soluble. Can somebody clarify this ?
You CANNOT safely wash a circuit board with tap water !!!
The circuit board has copper, aluminium, lead [sometimes] and tin.
Tap water has minerals, flouride, chlorine and all sorts of other stuff.
ALL of these metals corrode when exposed to mineralized water and you CAN'T clean underneath the BGA chips where the water loves to hide !
Isopropyl alcohol is CHEAP and won't damage any of the metals.

@@electronicsrepairschool Fuses are made of a low melting point metal. A copper wire with just the right amount of amps going through it, can create a fire hazard. So a metal like solder, or other low melting point metal is a better choice.
You're supposed to use destilled water to dissolve the residue. Afterwards you dry it and clean it again with IPA (alcohol). It's the only way to get rid of sugar and mineral residue.

I find that brake parts cleaner does a great job of cleaning dirty motherboards. It dries very quickly and leaves no residue behind. I also will often use a hair dryer afterwards as there can be condensation left on the boards from the "ice cold" blast of the cleaner and possibly my air compressor to get underneath chips where some fluid often can still be lurking. You can even just let the board dry out on its own if you're not in any hurry.
PS: Unlike rubbing alcohol, break parts cleaner can make you feel VERY dizzy/sick if you breath it in.....even if you use it outside like you SHOULD BE anyway! If it makes you feel like sh*t, then use alcohol instead!

@@emmanuelkissi8958 You CAN use it, but it contains more water than say, 91% which is better because it will dry faster and clean faster. I have used 70% to clean parts with no problem. Just make sure you give the parts more time to dry or better yet, use a hair dryer to speed up the process as soon as possible. Also...be mindful of the fluid that tends to hide UNDER the chips! Blow it out if you can or just let the whole board dry overnight or longer if necessary. 👍👍

But saliva also is good, if not better, to clean things like sugar.
You shouldnt wash sugary board with water and dry with hot Air. Sugar just dries back on the board. İt will look better because it will spread. But still can cause problems. What you want is water dissolving the sugar and taking it away. After you brush wipe it away with a dry towel then dry with hot air. Even washing the board under a tap works. I used to do it all the time. Dry with paper towel and then hot air so you leave the least minerals possible. If you really want to make sure, use pressured air on connectors. Hair dryer is a good option too.

Welp, Cleaning with water is ok, but after that you should do cleaning with alcohol to remove all the water in a dodgy places, also alcohol removes water resistant things that left behind.
