Premodern is the golden years of magic. Straight up. Invasion Block + Odyssey Block was the BEST time to play standard. Sooo many cool decks and strategies. My 13 year old @ss was playing 4 vindicate, 4 counterspell, 4 fact or fiction, some number of shadowmage infiltrators.. Going to FNM and just STOMPING all the 'grown ups'. GOOD TIMES.
It does a good job of cutting off the very early expansions where cards are both more expensive and the designers weren't yet fully cognizant of what would be overpowered. So it's nicely balanced, with a much lower power level than today's Magic, and due to 20+ years of reprints there aren't many expensive cards besides the Reserved List. I've put together entire Premodern decks with only cards printed in the 90s for under $60. And if you don't mind using more recent reprints you can build decks even cheaper.
If it weren't for the Premodern format, I would never have returned to playing MtG again. Now I have four (and counting!) Premodern-legal decks, and I'm loving MtG just like I used to!

Yes! Really nice format! I came across it by coincidence when i went to see the Dutch Open Premodern Championship a few weeks ago. Im building a deck now to play one friday a month with a group in my city. Im building black-white Dead Guy Ale. But all in the modern cardframe. This is allowed and i startend in 2003 so i like to mess things up a bit hahahaha! Dark ritual into Hippy or Phyrexian Arena. STP and Duress.... You have some nice decks too there!!!
One thing thats super nice about the format is also how cheap it was/ still is, meaning most people can afford several different decks. Although it seems like it is getting slightly more expensive to buy some of the key cards.
Yeah, skipping ABU and Four Horesemen, it cuts out the most expensive cards from Magic's early days. A lot of the legal cards have been reprinted at some point except for the Reserved List, and if you don't mind using modern framed versions of the cards the decks can stay very affordable.
@@FinalTrade yeah plus it seems like wizards are going to reprint almost everything in old border versions from now on. I'm not sure if I like it or hate it. I wish they would use different art because it's really putting me off collecting some of those old foil cards knowing that they can essentially be reprinted and look almost exactly the same
Hah! I enjoy exploring unusual ways of playing games. So a deck that seeks to win by not playing is exciting to me. =) To some extent Counter Phoenix does something similar. It tries to slow the game to a crawl and then slowly peck your opponent to death.
The tog variant of stasis is the most generous deck to play against in existence. The person piloting knows how much you love playing magic so they let you take all the turns so you can have all the fun.

Hell yea. They try to FTK my Mystic Snake and in response I repulse it back to my hand killing the FTK. So much card advantage. Golden times.
@@JWar- Make repulse good again!!! It should be a staple always in T2
the fact that this format is (relatively) budget friendly is mind-blowing

Best format ever. Without rotation🎉
Premodern feels how MtG did when I learned to play during Saga block. I love it.

Yes. And it is the best format
Best format ever
Thanks for the video. I have been thrilled about playing pre-modern since discovering it. I just need to pick a build and slap it together

Best constructed format for sure!
LOVE THE FORMAT! ❤
one of my favorite formats, I have a funky black/green reanimator deck
That makes me want to get back to building a bunch more decks for the format...
Best part of premodern are the lack of the newer cards that has billion words that basically does the same thing older staple cards do.
I didn't know that this was a format. I'm intrigued.
Premodern format is what made me return to Magic in 18 years

damn no reanimator love its definitely a staple in this format. Turn 1 Akroma is really fun.
Swamp, Dark Ritual, Funeral Charm (discard Nicol Bolas) Shallow Grave: opponent is at 13 life with no cards in hand....
Ah, those were the days! 🙂
Excellent vid!
NICE VIDEO
What is the magnavore deck theme?

Try pink prison variants, it has like 800 ways to knock your opponents out cold from nowhere 😂😂.

Premodern mtg is my only interest in mtg at this point. The game is just too different now.
