Thanks Acroballistics for making such a great video! I also played around with the Javelin design for a couple of months and really liked it for it's ease of construction and low maintenance. One thing however that I did notice is the huge impact that throwing technique had on performance. When I first started throwing I used an 10 inch Amentum on a prussic knot. I was initially getting around 25 yards standing and 30 yards with a running throw. After learning about stepping and leaning into the throw and getting the optimal release angle, I was getting around 40 yards standing and nearly 50 yards with a running throw. So the historical claim that a javelin can reach out to 3/4 of a bow shot is not entirely implausible if you had an excellent javelin thrower against an archer with a relatively weaker self bow or early composite bow.
@Historical Archery nice, I heard about those! I remember there being a kind of tube like launcher tool that allowed the flight arrows to be much shorter than normal. I would like to craft that weapon in the future.
Great video! What's most impressive, though, is the spear construction. I was sure it would come apart after a few throws, but it looks rock solid. Great stuff!
Good video! Your take-down javelin design is very nice as well. The results of my Javelin tests were really quite similar. Good hand throws with 666g javelin were ~18m/s, and ~17.5m/s with a 990g javelin. When I used an amentum, I only got a marginal increase in velocity with each javelin. A fast chariot would make javelins a lot more dangerous.
Javelins! Nice. I throw them with a loose string. Flat throw- string more forward. Long throw- string closer to the end. The longest throw I had was 38 meters and hitting the target. I got the idea from a Viking Saga and I think that Javelins(and spears) are a very overseen weapon of our history. So thank you...
Sometime roughly in the second century A.D., the Roman Legionary Army devised a general throwing javelin for all legionaries and auxiliaries. It might have been based on the early Republican Velites' throwing short javelin. This later throwing javelin was short and portable. It comprised a three-feet wood shaft hafted to a 1-foot iron shank tipped with a tiny, sharp, pyramid-shaped point, much as shown in this video. This general-purpose, short, throwing javelin had the advantage of being easy to manufacture and in large quantities. It allowed Roman legionaries and auxiliaries to function as Velites themselves when the occasion merited it. Imagine legionaries or more likely auxiliaries manning the forts and watchtowers on the long frontier (limes) wall fortifications in Europe and Britannia. When confronted with an invasion force of tribal barbarian warriors attempting to breach the frontier walls, Roman auxiliaries could cast numbers of these short javelins down upon the warriors while the rest of the garrison spilled out to man the fortifications.
@@Acroballistics NO WAY????thats so weird!?? I was literally watsapping a friend of mine just now that looks just like you!! Who is a church pastor; and i just saw him and said hey i follow a lovely guy who slings!?? And he looks so much like you youd swear hes you!! Even your manerisms are the same too?? Hes really smart like you too. Hes a butcher. And as im still just now still writing to him sending him your channel links i get an allert on my phone and a nice note from you??!! Arent you lovely! Anyway...... slowly but surely. Still on crutches. But im slingshotting about 300 berrings a night in my catchbox inside. My dads a hunter and sniper. I like things that are considered primitive. Id like to invent a slingshot with cams and wooden arms that shoots balberrings at around 400 to 500 fts. Thats why i keep asking where your videos were of you computer mapping your sling mathematics. So i can make cams that change angles in a very shirt space of time. Through watching you; i can see the diferent coils of sling doing diferent jobs too. Theres 3 angles i can see where there is a loading of the sling in the first coil then the release then the shot. Its very fibonacci to me. Your balance is improving too. I usta sling and end up with my right foot in the air standing on one foot?? And nomatter how hard i slung; id not topple over; it was very odd?? Anyway great to hear frim you and hope things are going well at work and stuff. Blessings Nathan

Throwing is an athletic movement like sprinting and jumping and require years of training to get into real speeds and range, without speed test of javelin are not accurate, if you throw them with 50 km/h and expirienced thrower with 100 km/h the difference in KE that is required for penetration of a hard objects is 4 time, that is massive. You could ask somebody from your local track and field club to test it, you will be astonished how much of a difference it will make. Anyway great channel ;) Subscribe :)
You lost about 20% range because of your javelin is imbalanced and flying halfway sideways, and increased drag. I had my javelin period, and got up to 45m relatively fast, then I platoed. I was using 350/400g javelins with a forged head, and a short 135cm length, so I can throw them in a high parabole, without it's end not touching the ground behind me. I'm not tall, and the amentum also got me to hold it almost at the tip ,since it was tied at the center of gravity. You can tie it also just behind the CG,that makes it shoot a bit higher angle than your throwing angle but ads a bit of drag. It's about balancing ,and tuning everythig to reach your goal. Mine was to reach max distance, while being a weapon, and not becoming a toy. With atlatl, I got up to 80-90m.
Classical people are not stupid that's what people tend to unimate them and tend to think they dumb what do you think that's why the British I don't think even America as high in the 1880s could never conquer people like this defeated the native Americans but I think what is thousands and thousands of lives more fighting these type of I think some point people severely weakened ourselves a certain aspect of even with firearms I don't think a civilization like this could be conquered not very easily the casualties would be immense tough for 1860s even 1870s army to fight these guys infantry

Note, late composite bows can shoot 600 meters with flight arrows (that land harmlessly)

Very fantastic video. The durability surprises me!
Thanks for the extremely interesting video.
Please use subtitles. I'm pretty good with accents so if I'm having trouble understanding, MANY people are are even worse off
Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep that in mind

Putting the heat on those sling throws!!
great vid!!
Omg I was just watching about javelins and looked for updates and see this
I'm glad you exercise your left side because that's a good effort for your right
You should make a Maasai or samburu style spear I hear they spear ak wielding cattle thieves at crazy range
Professional level quality video! Should join the History RUclipsrs!
This is missiles in the ancient days but proves how far technology has developed into electronics systems missiles
How effective was the throw using an amentum compared to without? Didn't catch that part.
without amentum ~28m, with amentum 35m.
Your very cool . I cant sling anymore i hurt my back at christmas and it wont get better. Im on crutches now
Thanks! I'm sorry to hear about your injury and I hope you're taking care of yourself

Gosh is there anything your not good at??
Cool video! Can you try throwing longer javelins spinning as well, like this Olympics athlete?
definitely something I want to try
