Damn, I spent ages trying to conjugate the verb correctly, I didn't know some adjectives go before the noun, not after. Language would be so much easier if the rules were consistent.
The mace, kanabo, etc. Are so underrated! Most people only think of the standard movie weapons. Getting smashed apart inside your armor would be horrid.
I think a kanabo would be pretty darn effective if you've got some serious muscle. Just the impact force is enough to be a deterrent. "Whoops! Ya shattered my clavicle there buddy! Let's call it a draw?" I'd love to see more polearm videos. Maybe one about halberds and their variations? Like the Chinese Ge and Ji, and Bronze Age "halberds" found in Europe?
theres a game called mount and blade warband that have a mod called gekokujo or something like that... i litterally knocked out like 40 guys in a row with that, its super overpowered... you can knock people down so easy that your oponents spend most of their time face down on the ground... love it... but now i use only katana, since its harder that way and it make it funnier to play for me.
04:44 - The commentary on aiming for the weal points in Samurai Armor. I studied the form and construction of samurai armor as a hobbyist for close to a decade, I learned a lot, because I found the armor to be both functional and beautiful at the same time. It fascinated me. One of the things I learned early on was, from three sides the armor is outstanding against accidental or deliberate sword blows. Given the pre-mongol invasion combat style of the Samurai was to choose one opponent and engage him in a single duel, you had multiple single duels in close quarters, and the greatest hazard for the samurai was the accidental blow from the side or back coming from an adjacent duel [and of course, hails of arrows, against which Samurai armor had exceptional resistance]. Hence the armor was very well designed to protect sides and back. ALL the weakest points in the armor were located in the front. These weak points allowed for maximum flexability in the armor, but pooly defended some of the samurai's most vital points, Wrists, brachial and femoral arteries, caroted and jugular. What stood between you, and those weak points on your opponents armor was the skill of your opponent, AND a very sharp sword. What defended YOU was your skill as a swordsman. The Kanobo negates all those defences, because a large heavy studded club impelled with enough force would not be slowed over much by the light flexable rawhide scales of a Hon Kozane Do, and would smash the occupant's ribcage and internal organs to chunky salsa. There's a reason the Japanese version of Satan carries a Kanobo, and not a trident. Oh, and for the record, I see nothing wrong with his hair or beard.
This reminds me of two aspects of samurai armor - the sode pauldrons were often attached such that raising your arms (e.g. when shooting a bow) would rotate them back out of the way, and cover your shoulder blades and arms from attacks coming from behind. The other thing is the horo cloak, that was also designed to 'catch arrows' and protect the samurai's back.
I wish he'd mentioned the weight too. I've seen one made of iron only, and it was 70cm long and so F-ing heavy that I could barely lift it and I'm a tall guy. If you scale it up to 1.5m then it would weight at the very least 50kg. I bet authentic ones shouldn't be heavier than 5kg.
Yeah, I agree. Most ancient weapons are surprisingly light - at least in comparison to many people's expectations (and a lot of modern replicas). Most heavy pole weapons, like the poleaxe and the halberd, seem to weigh around 2.5 to 3 kg. A two-handed war club should be a little heavier, especially a full metal one, but I don't expect it by much - 5 kg does seem reasonable. The one site I've found on the net that sells these weapons specifies that they go up to 11 pounds and 48 inches in length - that's aprox. 5 kg at 1.22 meters - although they're made of wood with metal studs, not full metal. A full metal tetsubo I suspect should weight the same, but be thinner...
I would imagine an iron only would be hollow. It does seem weird for the Japanese to make it all out of iron though, considering their shortage on iron. Unless it was possible to use some really low quality iron that would have been otherwise useless.
That 'side note' section was brilliant. Do not hesitate to include them in future videos! I find the kanabo, and other weapons like it, quite interesting. So, if you were to acquire one, I'd watch videos about it. Though, I think you know what's best to acquire to show off on your channel for us.
please do get a kanabo I would really like to see that in action. Also I would love a comparison video of different cultures anti amour weapons, especially since I personally love how simply effective they are.
On kanabo vs. European armor: A kanabo isn't that different from some variants of a goedendag, which proved quite effective for beating up French knights (albeit before full plate was common). And there's also significant overlap between shorter kanabo and larger morning stars and maces - which are also effective against plate armor.
Earlier European maces could be shaped almost exactly the same as a Kanabo. Just a stick with metal bands or spikes around one end. The goedendag had a pointy bit as well, which was what the Flemish actually named it after with 'gepinte staf' which means 'pointy staff', making it amusingly close to 'pointy stick'.
Autolykos wouldn’t the force not be as concentrated since it is gradually broadening to the tip and the weight of balance is closer to the hand as compared to warhammer/mace?
the kanabo/tetsubo is the samurai's solution against a european knight, also, Tsuruhashi japanese piercing warhammer, by the way, hitting knees with kanabo would be the a way of taking an opponent out of combat
I love this weapon in Warband. It just has a nice thum every time you hit someone with it. Also, I don't see how people saying that you look like D'artagnan is a bad thing xD.
1:50 is this a drawing of Stannis Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen? xD Yeah and that part with your hair and beard was realy funny xD I am with the samurai, Metaltron!!!
Very interesting video, as usual. I'm getting even more addicted to this channel (if even possible). However, now I can only think if you brush your hair or not :))
Thanks for the video, Metatron!. In my kenjutsu class we use tanren bo as part of the beginning exercise. I have always liked the tetsubo weapon and if I were a warrior in ancient Japan I feel that I would go with a Tachi, Tanto and Tetsubo. I would mostly intend to use the weapon for anti armour and any anti cavalry capabilities that it has are just a bonus.
Man this is unbelievable. I wasnt aware of the recurring comments issue AND just before the moment you started the mini rant I WAS actually thinking about your hair XD I used to have long hair and the way you use a loose ponytail makes me feel like I need to tighten the ponytail haha. I preferred the Dartagnan look the best :)
really enjoyed this episode especially stuff about the demons.the metatron is fricken awesome I don't care if he wears chainmail when going out on weekends. good work metatron.
A high impact weapon like this would definitely ring someone's bell. I am curious about hand protection. Do you know what kind of injuries killed these soldiers?
It's good at sword blocking, those spikes or nobs would prevent the movement of an incoming sword and combined with the weight and power it could probably do some damage to the sword.
Watching this to get some inspiration for a weapon used in a book I’m working on. Its like a kanobo but made of pure iron with a spike at its top meant for penetrating and bashing through thick armor.
You go to the gym 5 times a week? Aren't you a novice lifter? That's way too much. You should check out "starting streangh" or "stronglifts 5x5" or another tested novice program. I'ts gonna get you jacked quicker I promise!
Well there is nothing "wrong" with that, but it is uncessesary. It will not create the best possible gains since a novice need plenty of time to rest and recover. Pretty much all good time tested novice programs have the lifter go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and do full body training. If following one of those you should be able to get a 160 to 180 kg deadlift in 6 months or a year if you really give it your all. I don't think that's possible for most people if training with too much frequency.
But thats doing push and pull lifts and leg lifts on a machine. I only have 70kg of weights for my barbell (i excercise at home) so i cant really say how much i could deadlift but i think i would be able to get up to that
You wouldn't even get close to that. Doing things like that on a machine isn't the same at all. You would be lucky to even be able to pull 100 on the deadlift.
I gotta say dude, this type of video was pretty cool! It was quite entertaining! Keep it like this and you will improve! The jokes aren't as cringe as they used to be and you weren't even boring! Great job!
I think neither the kanabo or the warhammer would be more effective than the other. the two handed kanabo has reach advantage and can parry almost like a sword. this style of blunt weapons transitions well from two handed japanese swordplay. also warhammers are much harder to recover from after swinging since the weight is all focused on the end. that is why it works very well with a shield (and has been a very successful combination). the kanabo is actually quicker to recover from since the point of balance is not too far towards the tip and you also have two hands to maneuver it. also the kanabo can bypass a lot of weapon guards and parries from swords and polearms. but shields are the main problem for kanabos.
I am liking these videos, very informative, thought provoking and entertaining. As to the references to your hair in this - If you grow your hair does that mean you have Mohair and if you shave it off does that mean you have no Mohair
I absolutely loved this video!! I really like the bludgeoning weapons of older periods, they are brutally effective, and have their own sort of fear associated with them!!! I do think I still prefer the warhammers to the maces/flails/Kanabo, etc, but to each, their own!! Also, Metaltron, HIlARIOUS!!!!
Hello. I have stumbled across your video and I enjoy them alot. You have earned a new subscriber. I really like they way your videos are done great job.
It's amazing how context, delivery, and personality affect perception. Other people commenting on the workload they bear in life would offend me with their arrogance. But Metatron comes off as funny and cool with a respectable self-confidence. LOL :D
Your videos are certainly getting much better and much more entertaining to watch. Congrat's on your 100 k subscription milesone :) (also - you COMB that hair? With what? An enraged porcupine? We're going to need video evidence i think....)
Nice video. Finally someone puts out some information on this. And yes, I'd like to see a kanabō (or see you wield one, that is) if you like to get one. Btw. a video topic that came to my mind when watching the part with (the?) oni: Japanese mythology. Would be really interesting to watch somthing about that. Greetings from Germany :D

Best episode of 2017!~ I love the fact that you talk about something after Heian and Nara japanese period bu before the Sengoku-jida! Love the rant just after that, lot of female youtubers have this issue since people only talk about their looks while their video is about gaming or something else entirely. It's annoying when people are not focusing on the content.
Hello there noblest wing spreader! Interesting video, but I have a suggestion for you, I hope you would do more historic tales of battles, tactics and decisive decisions of how Roman general or Daymio almost lost and managed to win because of some ingenious tactic, Like the Hannibal story you did once and how the Carthaginians beat army after army only to lose later. I studied history for 6 years and I feel like they didnt tell nearly enough stories of such things, and Metatron I love your content and your way of telling stuff! I watched all such videos in a row!! These weapon things and stuff like that is interesting and all but tales of real battles are really exciting to hear especially from you!!!! Greetings from Finnish viking!
A point could be made, that some of the kanabo/tetsubo actually *are* polearms, since there are depictions of them where they are longer than the person holding it.
Mi piacciano i tuoi video perchè mi piace la storia ma quello spezzone a 2:40 è oro puro!!!!!! Dovresti farli più spesso mi hai ammazzato dalle risate :-)
Please do more videos like these, showing less known samurai weapons and tactics,i am always looking for this type of information but i don t have Classical Weaponry of Japan by Serge Mol so i kinda have to get by
Great video, as always! Very interesting content and really well presented, also appreciated the funny sketches😂 yes, I'd like to see you wielding a kanabō!
Not so much against lamellar armor, but a crushing blow against plate can be effective. The dent may continue to press against the body, either inhibiting movement of causing more damage.
I love this channel for all the Eudal Japanese information! But one thing I struggling to find anything about is the siege weaponry and tactics of the time. For all the rich history militarily its surprising that there is not more if any revolving around how the Samurai laid siege and the weaponry used
The Metaltron. He he he he. Honestly though, I'd like to hear more about the Kanabo. It was never historically used against shields, but it would be interesting to find out if either would be effective against the other.

The mace, kanabo, etc. Are so underrated! Most people only think of the standard movie weapons. Getting smashed apart inside your armor would be horrid.
So Japan had maces too.
oh ye
They had a decent few blunt weapons. Like the Jitte, the Tekkan, the tsukubō, the Chigiriki and Kusari-Fundo were a type of flail weapons.
Nothing beats headbanging.

Pretty much all good time tested novice programs have the lifter go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and do full body training. If following one of those you should be able to get a 160 to 180 kg deadlift in 6 months or a year if you really give it your all.
Your videos are always better and better¡
Mi piacciano i tuoi video perchè mi piace la storia ma quello spezzone a 2:40 è oro puro!!!!!! Dovresti farli più spesso mi hai ammazzato dalle risate :-)
I laughed way to hard at this video to admit it ... >.< you're awesome mate :D
congrats on almost 100k subs, Raf!
Lol at the Knight picture from Adventure Quest! I love that game.... Don't play it anymore, but its given me some great fun in the past. :)
I love this channel for all the Eudal Japanese information! But one thing I struggling to find anything about is the siege weaponry and tactics of the time. For all the rich history militarily its surprising that there is not more if any revolving around how the Samurai laid siege and the weaponry used
I liked this one! good content mix
The Metaltron. He he he he.
Honestly though, I'd like to hear more about the Kanabo. It was never historically used against shields, but it would be interesting to find out if either would be effective against the other.
Imagine being the poor man on the receiving end of a kanabō
