    I think a kanabo would be pretty darn effective if you've got some serious muscle. Just the impact force is enough to be a deterrent. "Whoops! Ya shattered my clavicle there buddy! Let's call it a draw?"

      theres a game called mount and blade warband that have a mod called gekokujo or something like that... i litterally knocked out like 40 guys in a row with that, its super overpowered... you can knock people down so easy that your oponents spend most of their time face down on the ground... love it... but now i use only katana, since its harder that way and it make it funnier to play for me.

    04:44 - The commentary on aiming for the weal points in Samurai Armor. I studied the form and construction of samurai armor as a hobbyist for close to a decade, I learned a lot, because I found the armor to be both functional and beautiful at the same time. It fascinated me. One of the things I learned early on was, from three sides the armor is outstanding against accidental or deliberate sword blows. Given the pre-mongol invasion combat style of the Samurai was to choose one opponent and engage him in a single duel, you had multiple single duels in close quarters, and the greatest hazard for the samurai was the accidental blow from the side or back coming from an adjacent duel [and of course, hails of arrows, against which Samurai armor had exceptional resistance]. Hence the armor was very well designed to protect sides and back.
    ALL the weakest points in the armor were located in the front. These weak points allowed for maximum flexability in the armor, but pooly defended some of the samurai's most vital points, Wrists, brachial and femoral arteries, caroted and jugular.
    What stood between you, and those weak points on your opponents armor was the skill of your opponent, AND a very sharp sword. What defended YOU was your skill as a swordsman.
    The Kanobo negates all those defences, because a large heavy studded club impelled with enough force would not be slowed over much by the light flexable rawhide scales of a Hon Kozane Do, and would smash the occupant's ribcage and internal organs to chunky salsa.
    There's a reason the Japanese version of Satan carries a Kanobo, and not a trident.
    Oh, and for the record, I see nothing wrong with his hair or beard.

    • @Tennouseijin
      @Tennouseijin 8 месяцев назад

      This reminds me of two aspects of samurai armor - the sode pauldrons were often attached such that raising your arms (e.g. when shooting a bow) would rotate them back out of the way, and cover your shoulder blades and arms from attacks coming from behind.
      The other thing is the horo cloak, that was also designed to 'catch arrows' and protect the samurai's back.

      I wish he'd mentioned the weight too. I've seen one made of iron only, and it was 70cm long and so F-ing heavy that I could barely lift it and I'm a tall guy. If you scale it up to 1.5m then it would weight at the very least 50kg. I bet authentic ones shouldn't be heavier than 5kg.

    • @JustGrowingUp84
      @JustGrowingUp84 7 лет назад +4

      Yeah, I agree.
      Most ancient weapons are surprisingly light - at least in comparison to many people's expectations (and a lot of modern replicas).
      Most heavy pole weapons, like the poleaxe and the halberd, seem to weigh around 2.5 to 3 kg.
      A two-handed war club should be a little heavier, especially a full metal one, but I don't expect it by much - 5 kg does seem reasonable.
      The one site I've found on the net that sells these weapons specifies that they go up to 11 pounds and 48 inches in length - that's aprox. 5 kg at 1.22 meters - although they're made of wood with metal studs, not full metal.
      A full metal tetsubo I suspect should weight the same, but be thinner...

    • @Ninjamanhammer
      @Ninjamanhammer 7 лет назад +5

      I would imagine an iron only would be hollow.
      It does seem weird for the Japanese to make it all out of iron though, considering their shortage on iron. Unless it was possible to use some really low quality iron that would have been otherwise useless.

    On kanabo vs. European armor: A kanabo isn't that different from some variants of a goedendag, which proved quite effective for beating up French knights (albeit before full plate was common). And there's also significant overlap between shorter kanabo and larger morning stars and maces - which are also effective against plate armor.

    • @MrNuserame
      @MrNuserame 7 лет назад +11

      Earlier European maces could be shaped almost exactly the same as a Kanabo. Just a stick with metal bands or spikes around one end.
      The goedendag had a pointy bit as well, which was what the Flemish actually named it after with 'gepinte staf' which means 'pointy staff', making it amusingly close to 'pointy stick'.

    I think neither the kanabo or the warhammer would be more effective than the other. the two handed kanabo has reach advantage and can parry almost like a sword. this style of blunt weapons transitions well from two handed japanese swordplay. also warhammers are much harder to recover from after swinging since the weight is all focused on the end. that is why it works very well with a shield (and has been a very successful combination). the kanabo is actually quicker to recover from since the point of balance is not too far towards the tip and you also have two hands to maneuver it. also the kanabo can bypass a lot of weapon guards and parries from swords and polearms. but shields are the main problem for kanabos.

      @jamessarvan7692 7 лет назад +3

      Well there is nothing "wrong" with that, but it is uncessesary. It will not create the best possible gains since a novice need plenty of time to rest and recover.
      Pretty much all good time tested novice programs have the lifter go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and do full body training. If following one of those you should be able to get a 160 to 180 kg deadlift in 6 months or a year if you really give it your all. I don't think that's possible for most people if training with too much frequency.

      But thats doing push and pull lifts and leg lifts on a machine. I only have 70kg of weights for my barbell (i excercise at home) so i cant really say how much i could deadlift but i think i would be able to get up to that

      You wouldn't even get close to that. Doing things like that on a machine isn't the same at all. You would be lucky to even be able to pull 100 on the deadlift.

    A point could be made, that some of the kanabo/tetsubo actually *are* polearms, since there are depictions of them where they are longer than the person holding it.

    The psychological impact of the wolf tooth club was similar to the kanabo. A lament attributed to the time of the Kaitan raids into Han China translates roughly as "The Kaitan have the wolf tooth club, we only have skulls to be crushed".

    Some years ago I bumped into a site that claimed that because the Kanabo is allegedly "hollow" it supposedly creates a resonance that is transferred into the target's body and causes damage akin to "hydrostatic shock" rupturing internal organs, going "through" armour, killing the wearer. This means that armour offers no protection whatsoever. It also came with the usual claims that Japanese swords were the best weapons ever made, could cut through anything without effort etc ...

    Everyone's looking for gold in Australia, when all they have to do is go to the Metatron on RUclips!
    If I were to use the kanabo, I would prefer one that is about one meter in length with the bottom .75m at 4cm in diameter and the rest at maybe 6cm in diameter and sheathed in iron or thick bronze that is cast with the traditional knobs as part of the metal sheet.

    Also, Metaltron, HIlARIOUS!!!!

    I find it interesting that a lot of people didn't know that samurai had a larger variety of weapons than just katana, yumi, and naginata.
    Most militaries before classic firearms had a lot of "similar" weapons because they all had uses. Samurai had bows, spears, polearms, daggers, maces, axes, and such. Some of them fell out of style in Japan specifically (shields), and Japan, just like many other cultures had regional variants or more exotic weapons, but they had your typical array of "basic" weapons of classic warfare.

    I think it's very easy to discount impact-weapons due to the perceived encumbrance/weight distribution etc. I'm my experience of in the use of HEMA Staff and club, and chinese and Indonesian martial arts staff, light mace and heavy mace, its surprising how agile they can be and the amount of damage they seem to impart. A mace like weapon, used on an armoured opponent (using coconuts and watermelons as analogs) is brutal. I would suggest that blows with even a light mace to bone (e.g. joints, head, rib cage) will cause disabling wounds to the target armoured or not. Blows to soft tissue pulverises said tissues (using a pork joint as analog) causing cuts and bludgeoning damage, to the point of leaving the target site "miniced". Moreover in sparring with light faux maces which are foam covered, an accurate hit to the temple or solar plexus requires very, very, little force to render an opponent unconscious or gasping for air. I have been on both sides of these attacks and dropped or been dropped by what you would only consider a " but I hardly touched him" blow. Therefore I'm not so sure you would drop a Kanabo/Tetsubo in preference to your sidearm. edit: It occured to me how similar this is to the Falchion and its use and I know you are familiar with this can-o-worms. Moreover mace weapons were common in tribal societies which did not employ much in the way of armour - nearly all Polynesian offshoots privileged the club, as did many first nations cultures around the world. Yes there are benefits to the mace against armoured opponents, I think against unarmoured opponents the club/mace must have been very effective (bang for buck) for it to have proliferated as it did. If I misunderstood your position, I hope I haven't made too much of a tool of myself.

    I'm ignorant about this, so this might sound dumb, but I'm curious about something. How did warriors choose/switch weapons? For example when you talk about what weapon would you prefer against cavalry rather than having the kanabo… if someone already has a kanabo against armored opponents, what can he do when he faces a cavalry? Is he stuck with the kanabo? Or is he carrying multiple big weapons (I understand that carrying an additional dagger is okay, but how many full sized weapon can you have)? Or is there a cache of weapons back at the camp and they run back to it?
    And before the battle how do the warriors choose weapon? Is everyone bringing their own weapons and deciding themselves what to bring? Or is it given out that "hey, you get a kanabo, you will concentrate on armored opponents, you get a katana, you will be concentrating on unarmored ones"?
    So, how does weapon select work in a medieval army, be it European or Asian?

    • @lordsimonicus3479
      @lordsimonicus3479 7 лет назад +2

      If you have a kanabo and encouter cavalry you mostlikely fight them with a kanabo, but on a battlefield you might have some guys with spears around to help you. if you want more than one weapon, wich is to big to be straped on your body without getting in the way, you will need someone to carry it for you.

    • @brendandor

      In Europe the Knights would have a series of weapons, so a lance for on the horse, a mace or other suitable blunt force weapon for other knights either on his belt or saddle and a sword one or two handed as well. A Pollaxe could presumably be used as an alternative to a lance if fighting on foot.
      Also don't forget higher class warriors would have a retinue supporting them, possibly only one assistant/squire who could hand them weapons if needed, not 100% sure on this however.
      In general it tends to be they enter the melee with a pole weapon, when that is broken or not useful they will switch to the most appropriate side arm, or request a more suitable pole weapon.

      +Lord Simonicus... or just pick it up once someone dies if you have the time to do so. I mean it can't be that uncommon that a soldier back then may start out with a spear and end up with a kanabo or a sword simply out of necessity.

    • @brendandor
      @brendandor 7 лет назад +1

      vampuricknight1 However its best to have your own weapon, swords vary massively even within the same style that you could be quite ineffective with one sword if its balanced differently to what you have trained with (the same with modern soldiers and guns), however obviously any sword is better than none!

    • @vampuricknight1
      @vampuricknight1 7 лет назад

      bren cav Definitely, most soldiers had 2 - 3 weapons on them even if one of them was a simple dirk or daggar (or in the case of the Japanese a simple Tanto) just in case.
      I'm just saying it wasn't unheard of that if you had the time mid combat and needed a weapon/"better" weapon you could generally find one on the ground relatively nearby and unlike a gun you don't have to worry about if its loaded or not.

    now im no expert but i think a long kanabo can also be a very effective parrying weapon compared to maces or war hammers. you can parry with it, using it like a staff.
    thats said i still think a sheld+mace/war hammer is more effective against full plate armor

    Hello there noblest wing spreader!
    Interesting video, but I have a suggestion for you, I hope you would do more historic tales of battles, tactics and decisive decisions of how Roman general or Daymio almost lost and managed to win because of some ingenious tactic, Like the Hannibal story you did once and how the Carthaginians beat army after army only to lose later. I studied history for 6 years and I feel like they didnt tell nearly enough stories of such things, and Metatron I love your content and your way of telling stuff! I watched all such videos in a row!!
    These weapon things and stuff like that is interesting and all but tales of real battles are really exciting to hear especially from you!!!!

    Just another constructive/objective criticism. True, war hammer is more effective in punching through armor than kabano, but war/battle is usually not a single combat. War hammer is also more likely to get stuck with the enemy (especially with his armor, plate more likely than chainmail). Just imagine striking a samurai in his full armor with a war hammer, chances it will get stuck or at least take some time in pulling it back. There are other samurais ready to strike you. Kabano will not get stuck ever.
