Thanks for this! It was such a pleasant surprise to see this project go from a mysterious model number ("Will it be small, reasonable and maneuverable? Another expensive luxury car?") to reality. Every time I would go to the dealer service with my C30 here in California, someone would say "It's a shame they don't make them anymore." I'm still driving it 12 years later and looking forward to the EX30.
Hi Tish I like your no nonsense review of the cars you test , unlike some who think they are comedians . I loved the colour, takes me back to when I had a yellow mk 111 cortina .
Our first new car was a 1977 Honda Civic CVCC 5sp in Carolina Yellow. This color is very close and yes, it will be the color we choose should they ever get the Belgium plant going so we can have them in the states.
It's priced keenly, and should take sales from quite a few of it's rivals, both EV and ICE.... I wouldn't choose yellow personally, but some will. I like the look of this car. Simply styled, but smart and eye-catching.
I'm so glad that you mentioned the rear window wiper 😂 it is a small thing but enough to sway me to a car that has this! It is a top consideration for me for a next car
Hi Tish , a great review on the Volvo EX30 looks a great little car, shame about the weather another wet day on the road, catch you on the next test drive Take care
My first Volvo was a 1972 164E. This car strikes me as totally having Volvo DNA, moreso than the previous gen and they had a good amount of Volvo DNA. The interior design is fantastic IMO. I do feel it's too small for me but as an entry-level Volvo, it's terrific.
I have been on a test drive and can confirm it’s a great drive. Personally I would be interesting in the Ultra Extended range and might be temped to go twin motor. I currently drive a BMW 4 series M Sport Pro and felt the EX30 was just as good, and the Ultra would surpass its technology.
I really liked the review. I loved looking at this interior, I have been searching for real-life photos and videos from this interior and there are very few out there, and definitely none as detailed as shown in this video. Too bad because this is definitely the best interior option IMO, especially because it's not as green as the Volvo site makes it look like. Keep it up!
Hi Tish good review considering the actual production cars are newly arrived. We test drove single motor extended range and liked so much we ordered one same day. We found central control screen easy to adapt to and with boot floor setting at low our Golden Retriever enjoyed test drive as well.
Volvo seem to be changing moving away from the square box and safe as a tank ,like the look of this one and the trim is excellent and looks modern they could be well be on to a winner ☺️
Excellent review, it looks a great new EV. Very hard to get hold of for the foreseeable future. It’s a shame there’s no heads up display, that might put some people off. I’m definitely considering the long range single motor version as my next car.
Great questions. The smart #1 was one of my standout cars of last year. Personally I prefer the styling of the Volvo but the Smart is lots more fun. The smart also felt a little bigger in the back but I’ll need to re-fresh my memory and get it back on here.
Great looking car and the entry level version is a bargain compared to some other EV’s. I have a Peugeot e208, which is a great car, but the Volvo is slightly bigger all round and the base version is cheaper than my e208GT. I know which one I’d choose! (Not in Yellow though!).
Love my twin motor ultra. This thing is quicker than almost anything on the road. Even bikes. It literally slingshots off the line leaving other drivers/riders with their jaws dropped in disbelief. When it goes, it is as if it was never stopped in the first place. The best thing about it it looks so unassuming till you give it the beans.
I sat in one last weekend. I thought it was lovely and felt spacious and not small but I think its a pity there is no instrument binnacle in front of the steering wheel. Lovely colour.
@@AutoSocialUK Wish I had more time to spend in it. It was an electric vehicle show and it was very busy but on the plus side I got to try out plenty of electric vehicles and have to say MG and Renault both impressed. The Toyota BZ4X on the other hand did not sitting in that felt like not much room in the drivers seat at all. A pity as the dash is different and nice in it.
Large battery single motor is an absolute steal. Love this car so much, I'd love it in volvos sage green colour (I know they don't sell it in that yet) lovely
A very interesting EV. Not affordable for a family car but competitively priced against other EVs. The colour options though...too calm for my taste. I like vivid colours.
One frustrating aspect of the plus is lack of seat adjustment meaning if, as I found, you can’t get comfortable you’ll need to find £10k to access electric seat that are only available on the Ultra.
Really liking the plethora of yellow cars coming available now. There is a whiff of Tesla about the EX30, which I like. I definitely would put this on short list when the time to change cars comes. 😊
I am in the US. I think it will sell well in Europe, especially with your gas prices and narrow roads, but in the US it may only appeal to our large city drivers. I think Volvo needs a nice green external color to go with the nice pine color interior. No cupholders in the rear? Maybe for the US market they will put in rear cup holders. The yellow will probably sell well in the US. There is a terrible blind spot in the rear so, I hope they have blind side warning on the car.
Nice one Tish. Agree re 50 shades of grey. I'd personally like a green paint option too. Like that Interior option myself. Remain to be convinced re lack of buttons but maybe one day I'll be converted. Id want bigger battery so too pricey new but used in a year or 2 could be good 👍
Lovely car, was top of my list but the windscreen is blocked by the rear view mirror so you can't see anything out of the left side! Lease on a Tesla was £299, so went for that!
I didn’t notice that but then i think where I drive so many cars, I miss things like that. My brain just misses it 😂 That Tesla deal sounds like a no-brainier

Next time you get a chance to drive a 400+bhp vehicle, do it! You only live once😂 right off the bat: the shape. Definitely looks like a subcompact SUV, but with some hatchback touches. Nothing's wrong with the bright yellow but it kinda looks like a banana on wheels😂😂😂 almost a perfect exterior design but with 2 issues for me. I'm not a fan of the split taillights. You talk about staying true to its identity, and Volvo always has those long taillights that you'd see on the xc models. They should've kept that on the ex30. Plus the rear wiper needs to be tucked underneath the roof spoiler and that would make the rear much cleaner. So those are my 2 zonks but other than that, a very capable, functional, fuel-efficient and affordable SUV that proves you don't need any of those 3 EURO cars to have luxury and performance on your side. Great review Tish.
Great review, what Volvo miss is that soon EVs will be taxed, and there is a further tax added for cars over £40k so Volvo really need to reprice the top end one.. People will vote with their wallets and pass the higher £40k model by, which is a shame..
I don't like having to look to the side all the time, and speeding cameras are about on practically every street these days, so not being able to look at the road and see the speed at the same time is a big minus for me. It needs a driver speedo screen or a HUD.
I'd be happy with something that only had 200hp and was cheaper to insure. I love acceleration but there's nowhere to use a powerful car safely where I live. I do imagine a lot of the ultra powerful EVs will be very cheap second hand buys once they are four or five years old because people on a budget won't be able to afford the insurance. Having said that I really like the EX30.
Worth saying that this is Volvo’s cheapest car (petrol or electric) by a long shot! Not even with recent inflation - the V40 hatchback started at £5k above this in 2015 money!
I had a sit in one last week, and thought that the rear room was pretty poor, especially in comparison with the MG4. I have to recognise that the trim levels in Spain (where I live) are probably different from UK specs, but here the only way to get a heat pump is by going for the top spec, which is over €50K. In comparison, the MG4 comes with a heat pump as standard on all bar the base spec. And I thought that the interior, especially in the back, reminded me somehow of an overstuffed Ford Escort Mk2 Firmer, sure, but the materials simply felt awfully plasticky. Which was all a terrible disappointment. I really, really wanted to like it. I went in prepared to convince myself that it was worth splashing a significantly larger amount of cash than I really wanted to, but really couldn't think of much that I liked about it. It was even in the same colour option, which I thought looked vile. OTOH, that colour is the only one that isn't a form of grey, dark grey or white. it was such a deeply unappealing experience that I didn't even bother with a terst drive.
Only one point of disagreement. I am 6 foot 3 inches tall and weigh 20 stone. After setting up front seat to where I was sitting I went to the back. Ok my knees were on the outside of the seat in front, but scooting around town, or car pooling to work and back I felt would work fine and not feel cramped. Might just be me.
