  • What type of foam to use in a diorama project is the most asked question that I get here in my channel. I decided to put together this episode where I'll go over the type of foams I use as well as share some tips on how to use and apply them in a project. Links to materials in this video:

    Thank you for making this. I've been looking for a straight forward and in depth answer for foam.
    I know it seems like something simple but when you're on a budget it really helps.
    Thanks! And subbed!

    How did you get the foam to look like wood? Did you draw them (because that's a lot) or do you have a tool to make those designs?

    • @MechbayStudios
      @MechbayStudios  7 лет назад +4

      What i did there is use a handful of toothpicks and just scarifyingthe surface of the foam.

    Subscribed! Love the tutorials. I was wondering if you have ever seen or have tried to create a larger 1/4 scale diorama? I have the NECA Harley Quinn and Batman that stand about 18" tall and would love to create a large scale dio for them, but haven't ever seen one done before.

      Liamfilmmusic I haven't really seen a lot of dioramas that are made for 1/4 scale. With that said that doesn't mean it's not possible. However changes on the materials to build it may have to be modified. For example, I predominantly use foams on my 1:12 and 1:6 scale projects. For a 1/4 scale, you may need to opt in using majority in wood/balsa to better support the weight of those figures.

      Thanks for the reply, yeah that makes sense about the weight. Maybe wood for base and supports and foam for walls so it can be carved. I'm looking forward to trying it.

      @@Liamfilmmusic 3 years later bro, how'd you go did you make any 1/4 scale dioramas? I'm thinking about it myself.

    thx to share, nice VDO.
    I have a question about pink foam.
    I got foam and bend . how can I fix it?

    • @MechbayStudios
      @MechbayStudios  7 лет назад

      If the foam has warp/bent in it then is pretty difficult to fix it. However, If the bend is not that big, then you may get away by sanding it down. Otherwise I cut the section of the foam where the bend is happening and then recombine the remaining flat sections of the foam via the splice method.

      Prakasit Kiatinimitra I also would like to share a solution that I've seen others do in fixing foam with bends. You can actually use a hot air blow dryer to soften the foam and then manually shape it flat while its cooling off.

      Sound like a professional technical. I'm not sure I can do that ha ha ha.
      So I think the best way for me it sand working.
      BTW thanks for your suggest and good information. I may try hot air way sometimes.
      Thanks a lot.

    Hello with this type of foam, do you use a prime on it when working with acrylic paints? I I'm looking to do my first brick wall and I want to make sure it turns out nice

    • @MechbayStudios
      @MechbayStudios  2 года назад +1

      I usually prime it with black acrylic paint and making sure that any crevices be covered by paint.

    I found out the hard way that the spray paint eats the foam. But this is good that you're letting other know. I would like for you to check out my stuff and let me know that you think. It should be ready in two weeks so I'll let you know thanx bro!
