Why do parakeets live in the UK?

- Research finds that Britain's booming parakeet population has grown from numerous accidental and intentional pet releases.
The vibrantly-coloured bird, which is a small to medium-sized species of parrot, has been in Britain for decades, though it was unclear how they were first introduced.
To solve the mystery, scientists used geographic profiling used to track down criminals - and analysed patterns of parakeet sightings over the past 50 years.

A sparrow was heard to say ‘ they come over here from abroad, take our seed, perch on our branches’
British people calling it invasive species is such a joke.
Back in the early 70s , when I lived in London , a neighbour knocked at my door asking for help. She said her cat had caught a green parakeet and wouldn’t let go , and could I help her save the bird. When I got to her garden it soon became clear that it was the bird that had caught the cat ! It had a vice like grip on the terrified cat and hung on tight, snapping at my fingers when I tried to make it let go.
I went back home for some stout gloves and very gingerly prised the parakeets claws( talons ?) apart and the moggie ran off like a scalded cat !
I love birds, especially parrots, and I planned to take the little beauty home , thinking it must have escaped from it’s owner. The bird was having none of it and fought like a tiger to get away, which it did, giving me a number of painful nips despite the heavy workmen’s gloves I wore.
The bites felt like my fingers had been crushed with strong pliers. The poor old cat had to go to the vet for her bite wounds and as far as I know never chased a bird again.
I saw a pair of these Indian ringneck parakeet eating berries off a tree last year so I'm guessing that even if people don't feed them they will stay here and considering your story that they lasted for so long since the 70s and how strong they are , I doubt they are even picked on by other birds that are native.
Indian ringnecks are not only cute but very bold ❤️❤️❤️❤️
They are wild birds and love to live freely....
People try to keep this beauty in captivity, but they are wild birds....
@@blooky102 they are wild birds .....
I used to live in Athens, Greece and they were all over the city. These beautiful Indian-Ring-Necked parakeets are true survivors and add an exotic flavour to the grey landscape of the UK. No complaints from me.....just gratitude for something happy and bright in these rather dull times.
I've had parakeets, pigeons and squirrels climb on me when I was at Hyde Park. It was an amazing experience. (I have video on my channel showing it).
My favourite place in the UK is hyde park. I wish i could live near there so i could go there everyday
Hi
Me too ❤
Green isn't on the colour palette of Britain?? Has Nick Hunt even been outside
I'm surprised they are doing so well in the climate there.
It tends to get cool and damp rather than north America winter cold. They are mainly in southern England which also has bugderigars, snakes, biting spiders and big cats, cos its never too extreme weather wise and they are all comfortable here.
Hi
Saif ullah Raes hi
Xombiticus hi
I love these parakeets
They remind me of home
See them in Sheffield all time now a flock of 4 is the most I’ve seen at one time
Need to come to Kent we get about 200 at sunset flying around
I live in near Dewsbury. Seen flocks of around 30. Very common now to see. There is even a love bird that knocks about with them.
We have quite a flock of these type birds in San Diego, CA. Same theory that a few escaped from a pet store.
We have cherry headed conures in So Cal, not Indian Ringnecks.
I am a pet parent to a IRN. The screaming is loud there is no doubt but the laughter, antics and love Ragnar display's and intitate's in my home far out way's the "hooting". I can't imagine why anyone would actually want to kill them but I can imagine in flock mode the noise is quite spectacular :)
Very interesting, I just saw 3 today, so i went online to search if there are green wild parrots here, n was surprised to find out, yes there are...
I saw a small flock in Victoria Park in Bethnal Green last week. Amazing colour and a very strange sight!
I live out in the Essex villages, and a small flock that worked its way up the River Stort to Harlow then ventured out into open farm land. They found a certain hollow tree and have lived there ever since. A local who has his house about 300m from the tree has trained them by blowing a whistle. They scramble out of the hole in the tree like WW2 Spitfire pilots scrambling, 2 minutes later they descend into his yard for bird seed and nuts! The original 6 have bred into around 20 on about 3 years. I like them. Its nice to have their colour and they add character to our lives.
Loads around south Manchester. A flick of 25 to 30 landed on the tree at the bottom of my garden during the summer. Regularly see half a dozen or so in the garden and their squawks can be heard daily.
We have 20+ in ward Jackson Park in Hartlepool, and it's even colder up in the North East
I am from AU. I was in the tennis court in Manchester and they flew over me. I thought they are pet who escaped from the cage. I saw them in London too. I wonder how they live in the UK. I never knew they can adopt to the cold.
Just had six of these in my garden in Bucks. First time seeing them.
We have them now In Newcastle upon Tyne there’s a small colony in the park where I live.
Saw them the otherday for the first time. Really distinct green colour really intrigued me
How wonderful !!! Nature sure is amazing.
Interesting. Same theory in Costa del Sol, Southern Spain though it seems that the species is different :)
I've just seen one in Mirfield today. I listened to it for minutes on end
There's a small flock of them in croxteth country park, Liverpool.
they are in britain , because I wanted them here.
Ahhh, so that's why.
They also invaded Germany (i love that it happened) and they also pooped all over one of the most luxurious and popular shopping miles in Germany, the "Königsallee" (Kings' Avenue).
I would love to live around parrots! I don't like their screaming though or I would own one!

Zom Bee Nature About thirty live in the park behind my garden in London. The noise is unbelievable.
@@spencerwilton5831 hmm... maybe I'd like to visit a park with them, then, and not live by them. 😁 I knew someone who lived near people with some Macaws. THE NOISE WAS HORRENDOUS EVEN FROM A FEW HOUSES AWAY!!! I don't know why anybody lived near them.
They also in Birmingham 🥰🥰 love them when they go flying over my head.
I also have an Alexandrian green ringneck Parrot
We have those birds already for decades here all over the Netherlands..
I spotted a tree full of green birds in Leicester on school run....Research shows I spotted parakeets in UK!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have these now in my garden in thelwal, Cheshire x
Some in Southampton too
I also spotted a the rarest & largest wood red headed green woodpecker last month!❤❤❤❤❤ Blessed
I think they're great 👍
Some have been spotted in North Solihull (West Midlands)!
They are in Newcastle now and that’s up north
We have them in Enfield North London
Apparently they all over the country I've seen them in thornaby on tees middlesbrough and roper Park in Stockton
Not sure why they have chosen
a particular tree to roosting every night at sunset. A flock
of them camouflage very night between the green leaves.
An amazing sight to behold in London. ❤
Same reason I want to live in the Uk too ❤️
Same here in Dubai🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜
I saw these in the park and i live in london...
I thought someones pet parrots escaped but now i realise they're all over london especially hyde park areas
loads of them in harrow
Can they drive HGVs?
Did that one bloke basically say we dont have green plants over here or am i wrong?
?
Didn't know parrots lived in England
Why cull them, cull the filthy pigeons instead
I want to go there

This ain’t nothing in New Orleans we got a whole flock of critically endangered cockapos hiding in City Park, the LARGEST park in the USA
Same problem in the Netherlands. A lot of ringneck parakeets in the wild. Special in Amsterdam.
I think the coloners bring them back with them after returning to england .
I would love to know what type of parakeet they are and where they originally from
Ring neck ( India)
@@gamekeeperukwildlife1057 Mauritius I suppose
There is also the Monk Parakeets from Argentina
They are ringneck Indian parakeet, from India
they nest in my neighbourhood here
Even in Rome is the same thing
Now that Boris in charge these immigrant birds will not be coming here anymore
Just leave them instead of shooting them like lots of people do
A much of buddies made a pact and relsed them around the same time ❤❤❤
These immigrants are welcome, beautiful birds..

Because parakeets are patriotic to Britain that's why. Brexit has brought them here to share our glory
@I'LL BE BACK ! Polls mean jack, we are leaving.
I'LL BE BACK ! Labour have already lost one of the seats that was labour. Looks like your original theory of the exit poles being right was correct.
They are Indian ringnecks belong to India....
They managed to escape into the wild as pets in the uk and eventually the population in the uk increased
Wow
Yeah now all the songbirds have gone 🤷
Let’s go sky let’s go-!!!!
So why aren't there parrots everywhere in the UK

And is it possible, for example, to take one home? Is this possible, just interesting ❤
They were actually released from Borehamwood film set as they needed to be released to the wild
No
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Okay but do they ever plan to get rid of them? Their very presence is harmful to native wildlife. For the good of our struggling nature they need to be removed.
No
Jimmy Hendrick released a pair into the park.🤎🙏
Wouldn’t be enough to start a population
This has been debunked.
Are they tasty?
Some species' of parrot are decreasing dramatically in South America, so we should welcome them and see them are helping them survive in a new home.
We have jimmy hendrix to thank 100 percent he used to go to feed them in hampstead park after releasing them
Myth
They come from Pakistan
