Yay, a new Epic fan! Once you join, you're one of us, lol. Also, love the reaction! The thought of the baby and Odysseus's broken heartedness still makes me sad.
On a more positive note, lol, I just want to give a (spoiler-free) sort of intro to this world! This concept musical is based on the Odyssey, a story about Odysseus (the main character), the King of Ithica and captain of 600 men, trying to get home after the events of the Trojan War (and hence the sequel to the Iliad). I see you noticed Zeus, but the other god is Athena, the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy. For clarification, 20:06, Athena didn't literally "create" Odysseus. It was just a bit of a hyperbole: she mentored him and taught him everything she knew so he could be the "strongest warrior", which apparently means "turning off your heart."
Also, Polites (the main singer in Open Arms) is Odysseus's best friend and vies for peace. Eurylochus is Odysseus's second-in-command, and he is essentially the voice of the crew.
Meanwhile, music-wise (also spoiler-free): The creator of this musical is Jorge (H - ORE - HEY) Rivera-Herrans. He is also the lead actor and singer and plays Odysseus! If you didn't notice, this musical is split into multiple parts, called sagas. You just reacted to the entirety of the Troy Saga. The next saga is... well, you'll see. But something really cool is that each character has their own unique instrument. Odysseus has the guitar: different types for different moods: emotional/cunning (I forgot what guitars those are). Athena has the piano. Etc. Also, a canonical part of this world is the fact that anytime there's background vocals and only a human singer, those background vocals HAVE to be other humans (you've heard this in the form of the Odysseus's crew singing along with him, most predominantly in Full Speed Ahead). Meanwhile, if a god is present, the god can magically summon backup vocals for themselves. Pretty cool detail. There is also a reoccurring danger motif, but you can try and figure that out for yourself when listening.
Sorry for the incredibly long rant. Jorge is an incredibly talented person, and I love your reactions. I hope you react to more in the future!

Thank you for your service. This is so well put. I think Odysseus has a Nylon String guitar and Electric. And with Athenas piano, theres a musical (riff?)that also symbolizes her. motif? Idk.
@@RayGainbows right, Odysseus also has the acoustic guitar for when he is being cunning or in touch with his vulnerable emotions.
When it comes to Athena's sound; Athena is actually represented with long sustained notes, such as the 1st time she sings "warrior of the mind" and the last time she sings "Goodbye".
The riff you are referring to is significant of her alliance with Odysseus, hence why he is the 1st to sing it, and she joins him, and why she stops using that riff by the end of Goodbye, its rather fascinating because someone who pays attention to the music aspect can easily locate this but the fact that the creator thought about it and produced it so well is astounding.
@@lila9440 I hear what i thought was Athenas tune after poseidon says "....thats what i hate" (in a later song) but i could be wrong. thats that "motif' i was talking about. Like when shes upset it speeds up. but maybe its not linked to her. idk. This musical is making me listen to music in a way ive never done before and its pretty neat.

It got addicting and really good
bruh that was me i finished it in a fuckin night and no regrets the next morning
I heard it said, looked at the time left, and said "Aww honey"
So some little info in the horse and the infant when Odysseus gave solutions like “I could raise him as my own” “or send him far away from home” “make sure his past is never known” Zues’ background lyrics immediately shut them down basically saying either kill him or lose everything by saying “He will burn your house and throne” “He’ll find you wherever you go” “The gods will make him known”
"The blood on your hands is something you won't loose"... how bold of you Zeus. You're the one telling him to kill the freaking baby. You're also saying the gods will MAKE the child into a murderer no matter what Odysseus does. Sounds just like blackmail to me. Whose hands this blood is on, exactly?
@@blueteller At least quote the whole thing... Zeus follows it up with "All you can choose is whose." It's crappy that the gods would let the child know. But Ody is being mentored by THE GODDESS OF WISDOM. He has all the advantages he could get here, and Zeus, while it's morally wrong is teaching him a very good lesson (The whole point with Polyphemus). When you have the Goddess of Wisdom And Strategies at your side of course the other gods are gonna test you because who else will?
@@sabertoothno34 My entire point is that the choice is LITERALLY out of Odysseus hands. The only reason why he's forced to kill this baby is because someone above him placed him in this situation.
If a General tells a Sergeant to shoot someone, do you blame the Sergeant? Yes you can argue that there's still a choice there, even with consequences. But if the General says "shoot the kid or we'll killing your wife and son", would you still make that argument?? Well I wouldn't! And that's EXACTLY what's happening here!!
And with the Cyclops - the problem was NEVER about Odysseus not killig him. It was about him being stupid and doxxing himself. Athena kinda had a point, but she was pushing him too hard right after Zeus pushed him into infanticide. Of course the guy rejected it! I wouldn't care if Odysseus actually killed the Cyclops or not, but that's not my point; sneaking away while Polyphemus was blinded was the smartest thing to do, instead of risking more of his men while there were OTHER Cyclopses around. If Odysseus kept his mouth shut and let Polyphemus believe his name was Nobody everything would have been fine.
Look, Athena was being resonably cautious, and probably wanted the clout of her champion becoming a monster slayer... but it wasn't necessary and it REALLY wasn't the right time. If Odysseus didn't feel the need to double down after rejecting her, the whole doxxing thing wouldn't have happened and they all would have avoided a lot of grief. She had bad timing.
I do get the overall message of the musical, and I kinda agree and disagree with it at the same time... but Odysseus himself is just super unlucky. He messed up only one time, but the whole world is after him for it. Not to mention the infant - I firmly believe the person giving the order for it - "This Is The Will Of The Gods" - is to blame. Greek mythology is super hypocritical in general. Notice how sometimes killing your family members in the myths is totally cool and sometimes you get chased by the Furies to the end of the world for it.

The first time I listened to Epic I couldn't remember his name, so I called him Sunshine Man

I see that Squid did a good introduction but i'll tell you one thing: Jorge likes to re-use melodies from past songs in future ones (In musicals, it's called a 'motif')
For example, whenever Penelope is mentioned you'll hear the same melody in the background played by a Viola (her instrument) Other things like the 'Just a man', 'Full speed ahead' and 'Warrior of the mind' melodies re-apear in the future. So just remember:
"When does a man becomes a monter?"

And yeah the baby was dropped from the wall - there was no way for Odysseus to keep the kid's past a secret from him as the Gods would have told the young prince everything and basically pushed him to seek vengeance (Futures aren't maybes in Greek Myth, everyones fate is set in stone and only in extremely rare cases can fate be changed, most heroes in Greek Myth usually bring around the disaster they try to avoid by trying to change or cheat fate).
The Lotus Eaters in the original myth weren't little creatures, just men drugged and controlled by the consuming of the Lotus.
Athena didn't *make* Odysseus exactly, he was a genius and talented individual that she saw as a perfect vessel for her teachings so she mentored and tried to mould him into the perfect General and warior as per her beliefs.

Also, Athena didn’t actually CREATE him or want him to start wars. He was born, and she realized how great of a warrior he was when he killed her magic boar so she decided to train him.

We all know exactly why every pretty face in Greece sees Zeus 😒😒
The little creatures are Lotus Eaters (they're traditionally supposed to be people but the fandom enjoys the cute little guys), and the lotus fruit/seeds put you in a perpetual state of bliss, which makes you lose any sense of danger or urgency. So, even if something was dangerous to them, they wouldn't react otherwise. And they aren't really malicious, just not all there because of the lotus they eat.
Also: Athena didn't "create" him, he has a human mother and father, but she basically molded him since he was a boy so he could be that "perfect warrior" she wants to make. An excellent patron goddess but the last one you want disappointed/mad at you.

Also idk if anyone told you, but the animator for Just a Man left it ambiguous because there was no confirmation on the ending at the time, but in the story of The Odyssey, Odysseus does drop the infant

So first, I loved the reaction. It was a lot of fun... Now 2nd... "Don't listen to Zues"... This is an ancient Greek epic turned into a musical. In ancient Greece if the gods or Oracles give you a prophecy you believe it, because it WILL happen as they say. If the gods tell you to do something or everything and everyone you care about will be destroyed, you do it, ESPECIALLY if Zues, Hera, or Poseidon tells you to do it. Those are 3 of the pettiest most heartless entities in Greece and they WILL make your life so terrible that a living hell would be paradise by comparison... with no hesitation, and a LOT of pleasure for them.

i think what makes im just a man hit even harder is when you know the story of odysseus before the events of the oddyssy. The man never wanted to go to war with troy, when agnamemnon came to recruit him he played himself off as a man gone mad and that almost worked, but because he is athena's champion she needed him to go so she let the person who went to recruit him know he is faking it and that person then forced his hand by saying if he cant go to war than telemicus must go in his fathers sted.
