"Fluency is a measure of confidence" Cette phrase résume parfaitement ma situation actuelle. J'habite actuellement en Suède, et j'avais appris la langue suédoise avant mon déménagement. Je comprends tous les podcasts sans aucun problème, je suis capable de lire des livres et je maîtrise beaucoup de vocabulaire. Mais malgré tout cela, je me sens souvent pas très à l'aise et cela mène à des situations où les gens préfèrent parler l'anglais avec moi, ce qui à son tour diminue ma confiance en moi encore plus. Je crois que maintenant je comprends ce que mon amie voulait dire quand elle m'a dit que mon accent est ''insecure'' . Ce n'est pas un manque linguistique, c'est le manque de confiance en moi qui me freine.

The late Laoshu (Moses McCormick) used to the refer to those real life interactions as 'levelling up'. I use the analogy of a soldier who has gone through boot camp (i.e. studying) and is now engaging in battle (i.e. real life interactions).
Another great video from Luca. One of the few polyglots (I prefer the term linguаphile, but that's just me) that I admire.
I remember years ago when I was a student being stung when a Russian friend commented that a friend of mine spoke better Russian than me. I knew I was a better student, got better marks, had a better vocabulary and a better accent than my friend. But he actually spoke because he wasn't shy whereas I just sat quietly not saying much.
I realised that my problem was that I was trying work out in my head the complete sentence I wanted to say before I opened my mouth. I needed to lose my fear of just starting to speak with only a rough idea of what I wanted to say and just see what happened. Sure enough I realised I could do it. Just speak and you'll work it out. And if you can't find the words, you just find a different way of saying it.
I remember meeting the same Russian a few years later and he commented that my Russian was SO much better than before. It actually wasn't. It was probably worse because I hadn't used it for a while and it had got rusty. But I had changed and instead of just sitting there smiling and nodding I was actually speaking!
Exactly what happens to me with Armenian, a language I acquired some years ago in self study. Unfortunately, here in Italy where I live there is no possibility to interact with Armenian people, so my speaking is limited to the 10/14 days I try to spend in Armenia once a year. Once I met an American girl who had spent some years there. She had a gruesome pronunciation and also her grammer was bad - but she was fluent! How I envied her!
I think this is a fairly accurate assessment. Unfortunately, too many people end up finding ways to avoid doing what they know they should be doing: speaking. It really does require courage. It requires the ability to be vulnerable and risk feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness, as well as the willingness to make mistakes and acknowledge and accept them. I struggle with this myself to a pretty significant degree. I need to just look myself in the mirror and tell myself to grow a pair and just speak. Who cares what happens.

J'ai pris conscience aujourd'hui, grâce à un ami à toi, que je n'ai pas besoin d'avoir un meilleur niveau d'anglais pour parler anglais sur instagram ou linkedin.
Je n'arrivais pas à accepter le fait de faire d'erreurs en anglais en public! Ah, notre parcours scolaire nous poursuit plus longtemps qu'on ne le croit!

As an anglophone who moved to Montréal, one of the few truly bilingual cities in the world, the confidence aspect is 150% key to getting people to stop switching to English or whichever other language is most commonly expected for you both to be mutually fluent in. When my friends tell me that my French is very good I always say "it's really actually not that good, yours is probably technically better, I'm just confident about it"
I agree. I would add fluency is a measure of adequate exposure and comprehension and therefore evinces itself in confidence.

Set times on your calendar and have plan that’s ready to go. The less friction, the better.

J'ai commencé à apprendre le français depuis quelques semaines mais je n'ouvre pas les livres, je m'écris avec des parlantes natives. Je ne sais beaucoup de grammaire toutefois je me fais comprendre. Signifiè ça que je suis déjà à un niveau plus advancé? Je pense que c'est vraiment difficile apprendre un langue sur les livres je ne sais pas comme le faire. Cependant j'ai besoin de connaître des règles de grammaire pour communiquer bien. As-tu de conseils pour moi à part la discipline?
Acho que concordo geralmente. Mas apercebi que quando acabei de estudar o português (e simplesmente comecei a usar a língua na minha vida quotidiana) atingi um muro. Consigo lidar com o pagamento de contas, ou pedir ajuda no supermercado em português sem problema. Mas quando estou com os meus amigos portugueses, não consigo conversar muito com eles. Ainda precisamos de utilizar inglês, porque o meu compreensão oral não é suficientemente bom.

Coragem e persistência, meu amigo. A fonética do português europeu é bastante desafiante. Temos uma certa tendência para suprimir vogais, o que dificulta bastante a compreensão oral. Por vezes parece que falamos por cadeias ininterruptas de consoantes. Frases como "O ministro precisa de um psicólogo" facilmente se transformam em "O mnistrprcisadumpsicólgo". É questão de ir apurando o ouvido para separar as palavras

You have made an excellent observation with the distinction between language learner and language user. Nevertheless, I keep realizing that these overlap. I'm quite good at getting to reasonably good language speaking habilites quickly but I'm much slower when it comes to understanding. So it has happened to me in French and more recently in Dutch that I addressed to the people in fluent and confident manners but then I had no clue what they actually answered, probably because they were then taking for granted that my language level would be better than it actually was. So, I probably need to slow down at speaking abilities and focus more on listening and vocabulary..
Anyway, as you are probably aiming at becoming a language user while you are still in the process of being a learner, both phases tend to overlap. And it's good as well because using the language as a language learner is the best tool to turn into a language user.

You need to get the experience of speaking the language under your belt. All the studying in the world won’t let you skip this. I’m procrastinating it with my Korean but I’m a low intermediate so I think it’s ok plus I have nobody to talk to anyway.😂. I’m just going to read 10 more books. Maybe 15.
Korean takes much more time, I think. But if you are able to read books already, you could as well find someone to speak. It really helps to have a language partner.

Thank you so much Luca! I really needed to watch this video. I’ve been learning English since I was in school and it feels like I’ll be writing phrases on my notebook forever without any improvement. But, as you explained, what I really need in this phase is to start using the language in conversations and expose myself to new situations. As simple as that.
It seems I'm a fortunate language learner, I don't need discipline, there is enough motivation. Well, maybe many years of discipline in language learning have made me enjoy the process so much that by now it just feels good to learn languages.
As for the courage, you are right.
I just got to B1 in Greek and have never spoken to anyone yet except in writing. I'm thinking of starting to speak when I reach B2. I want to talk and i know I will make mistakes but I need to read and listen more because what good will trying to speak do if I can't understand what is being said back to me?
Hi Luca, I was wondering from your personal opinion. Is it ok to learn two languages at the same time? Or is it better to at least for about 6 months learn one then add a second language? Learning Greek and added German as the second one. But I don't know if this is the best approach?

Good point, although it only applies to intentional learners as some people will learn a language through unconventional or practical tools.
You can talk for years in online lessons with tutors, but that doesn’t quite prepare you for real life
Que buen mensaje y buena reflexión tiene éste video. Creo que lo que transmite éste video es aplicable a todo en la vida, a cualquier cosa que quieras aprender, a cualquier cosa que quieras "enfrentar" porque te saca de tu zona de confort. Debes salir a allá afuera y practicar, practicar y practicar, tu confianza en eso se irá incrementando y todo irá fluyendo cada vez más.

"Fluency is a mesure of confidence" that is a great quote. My experience in Italia this summer certainly supports this aphorism.
Two years of learning to reach the A2 level allowed me to have very nice meetings and to help us in difficult situations in the mountains and this, even if we must recognize English has become the Lingua Franca.
Yes! Fluency is about words, grammar and pronunciation but ALSO about confidence and experience using the language.
