I think fan art is a great way to hone your skill becuase some of the design issues are already solved and you can focus on solving the remaining issues of image creation. Also by recreating successful designs it helps build a language to reuse when creating new original work later down the line.

Hi Ahmed, thank you so much for sharing this video. I always liked to make fanart but I felt that in order to work in the industry you had to reach a specific style (realism most of the time). I forced myself to develop that style but you're right, why create something that looks super realist when you can simply go outside and see it with your own eyes! I'm gonna keep doing what I love for myself instead of pleasing the 'public'.

I actually found your videos while watching others from comic artists like Jim Lee. From watching those I got way more interested in that less realistic but more expressive style. I found that it makes so much sense that when trying to create a sense of action, feeling, motion, etc. it helps to use the techniques those artists have mastered. Comparatively, realism just looks so static and often dull. Your videos are as inspiring as they are educational. You have one more subscriber.

Hi! I've discovered your art recently, while digging around for tutorials and tips and your art is really cool, tried some of your tricks myself and they really do make the artworks shine.
Fanart is great, I think most of us aspiring artists grew up drawing characters from cartoons or videogames and it helped us grow. So why stop?
Keep up the fantastic work, I really like what you do! Good luck

I'm a new subscriber going back over your early posts to get a feel for your character, temperament and growth. I love your positive, can do attitude.
I also enjoy drawing fan art, and feel that it was a huge learning curve for me. It's fun getting excited and inspired by the level of skill and work that goes into (some) games. If it wasn't for FFVIIR I would have probably given up on my dreams of being a professional artist.

I just found your videos today, and I have to say you're extremely inspiring and I am very thankful for everything you've already done for artists all around :') Thank you so much! Also, a game with a wonderfully stylized design that I've just recently started playing is 'Transistor' and I gotta say this is exactly the kind of art I'd like to be able to do and work with. It's my dream to live off of art, preferably in the video game industry or comics, and I'm slowly but surely working towards it. And heck, if I end up getting into the biz, I might just let you know! The 'permission' you gave us all to do whatever the heck we wanted resonated very deeply within me and I cannot thank you enough.

My go to guy whenever im in a slump is venom. His features are so iconic that i feel no matter which way shape or form you mess with his shape language, it will always be venom. There is so much room for experimenting with that character and its evident by how may iterations there have been through his history.

This was inspiring to listen to :3
I'm currently a year ten student, choosing subjects for the rest of my schooling, and now being pressured to decide what I want to do with the rest of my life. Digital art and design is a passion I have, but there is no way I can be taught, and no one really understands it. They don't think it leads anywhere, and now I'm kind of unsure. But there's nothing else I'm good at XD

MMh no. I can't agree on the witcher being generic or realistic or whatever you called it. Yeah, there is a real world outside and yeah it is rendered realistic. What catched my attention the most in this game were the monsters, the harpies and sirenes, how everything comes together with the environment. How it feels natural that this monster lives there. How you feel when you discover a little forest with abandoned wood cutter houses, and you know instinctively what's going on. You do the right things instinctively, just like game designers wanted to. It's absolutely fantastic how nice that open world feels, and how the experience the game designers wanted you to have transfers perfectly. AT LEAST FOR ME.. :D
Whatever, it's fantasy. And for me is a realistic fantasy world so precious to look at. I can't agree with you. You CLEARLY see how a person thought about the locations and designed it. Beautiful ciri btw. :D (Not a native english speaker, if you find grammar mistakes, you can keep them! FOR FREE! :D)

Hey! I've come across your videos like a week ago and I've seen most of your stuff already aand I just wanan say thank you and that I love you! :D I love your voice, your paintings, your jokes, your opinions - i'm connecting with most of them and it feels nice to know that there's another artist that thinks kinda similary (and I know that there may be a lot of us who does, but... you know, I can hear you!) - you tought me new stuff and reminded me of a lot of things too. So, thank you, keep being awesome. >w<
For the fanarts - I draw them and I enjoy drawing them a lot. There's something nice in making something familiar - like your favourite character, all that energy and atmosphere - and mixing it with your art, with your own familiar thing. That's what's amazing about other's fanarts too, it's just fun to see characters in different styles!
It's the same for me with genderbending tho. Not those oversexualized, but "realistic" ones, ones that could work, you know? I like to create new things and it's nice challenge to kinda.. think about it and design, how would some charater act if he was a girl/boy, what clothes would he really like to wear, what would change and what would stay the same? I guess I just really enjoy seeing "old" things in new perspectives!

While I don't make a living for drawing fan art, I tend to do a lot of it, but mostly for Final Fantasy games. I like practicing my art using the cast of FF8, specifically. I usually just tweak their outfits once in a while, try something goofy, or try to emulate an epic scene. Sometimes it's fun, but sometimes I find myself frustrated when it doesn't turn out the way that I wanted it to. Recently, I realized I needed to take a break once one of my main original characters' face started to resemble Squall's, (lol). I can see why it shouldn't be considered a bad thing, and it should be done for fun also, but I suppose it's always good to know when you're drawing too much fan art and to know when to back up a little from it. I've only recently begun to take my art seriously because I realized it's the only thing in my life that I am consistently passionate about, and I know it's a skill that needs to be developed---so I shouldn't rely on "talent".. And so I find myself here, soaking up your art knowledge and going back to the drawing board. But I digress, thanks again for making these videos. They're insightful and helpful. I watched this video earlier, but figured I'd comment later on once I'd gathered my thoughts. Being that most of my gallery contains FF fan art, this video resonated with me. Ah...I'm in for a journey. haha

I have similar feelings about realism these days, its were i wanted to be, making photo realistic highly detailed stuff must be the what the industry and people really want to see I thought. But i started to actually acknowledge what i really enjoy myself and i love stuff that plays with shapes and forms like the artwork for darksiders and wildstar, i love the detail and understanding it shows of forms in real life. Although the Witcher 3 is one of my favourite games ever, it really is a very well made believable world they created but the writing, voice acting and music really make it special to me, more so than the graphics. I still appreciate realism but the titles you mentioned like Gigantic really caught my eye with their presentation. An i hope my work reflects my preferences in the near future and appeals enough to others so i can make a decent living off of it whilst following in the footsteps of the artists i look up to! The dream is strong and seems realistically possible with people like you putting in the time and effort for us up and comers so thanks again.

Even though Witcher 3 is my favorite game right now,..I mostly agree with you on the design and art direction missing it's flare. But I would like to point out though that the "Crones of The Crookback bough" have one of the most interesting design concepts I've ever seen.

I sticked to traditional art for a long time, so fan art is a great way to paint something for the first time with a tablet :)
Other than that when I'm drawing some characters it's always cool to see what the characters look like in a different style and you can also take some special features of their personality and show them with their outter appearance. That's how I practise to add some characteristics and make them visible :)
    Thanks for the encouragement

Your description of what you like in a videogame made me think instantly of Transistor by Supergiant Games. If you haven't played, I highly recommend. Astounding artwork, linear gameplay limited to a very intentional plot, to the point, prolly 4-6 hours of gameplay.

This video is super awesome, I haven't played The Witcher but it looks really cool. I really appreciate artists that do fanart because a lot of what I've seen is of book characters and stuff where it's just the artist's interpretation of the character and that's really interesting in itself. It's impressive to me when artists will draw a character they love in their own style or just drawing them in their general design. I do that a lot actually, like I'll see a character and I think "Hey I wanna draw them, they look cool." And sometimes I just do their appearance from a game or whatever but sometimes I like to explore and see what they'd look like in my own style. I find it to be a lot of fun either way. In fact recently I've wanted to design a winter-y snow garb for Link from Legend of Zelda (for instance something he can wear in Snowpeak in TP). So I'll be trying that out soon. At any rate, super cool video!!

  • @RodrigoTakehara

I think fan art is great. Gives you artistic vocabulary, knowing the design choices that another artist made. And I think It's also a great way to show your love. I mean, it would be awesome to one day see my ideas being done by other artists. To see that you left a legacy in a way.
I've been thinking about realistic vs stylized, I believe every choice should have its reasons, witcher has its magics and monsters, but it's a game with focus on things like the human nature, a realistic design is fitting. On games that focus more on exploration and discovery like Zelda, brother colors and exaggerated features are great!
The show is great! You speak encouraging things in a clear way, and it's good to tell what's going on with the background drawing now and then like you do. Keep it up!

I actually used to be afraid of making fanart because I didn't think I was good enough. It always seemed to be more popular than art of original characters on sites like tumblr, and I wasn't confident that I could make something that would stand out when there were so many other people drawing the same thing. Lately I've been drawing mostly just fanart, and it's actually helped me improve a lot since I'm pushing myself to make everything as accurate as I can while also building my own style!

I want to learn to color just as you did in this video, but every time i feel like im overdoing it with multiple shades, or i can't get rid of the outline of the sketch i made. How do you go about coloring? Im not sure if i should have tons of layers, or just color all on one.

Thank you so much for these talks; they're super informative and relaxing to listen to! :3 Plus I do feel you, as an artist aspiring to enter the industry I really don't play enough, as gaming is almost a waste of time when there's drawing to be done... That said, do you think creativity and design can be learnt? I can work to an extent on getting better at technical skill, but my biggest dream is to make my own worlds - and I'm stuck drawing fanart because I literally cannot come up with compelling stories and designs... it's depressing.

Wow this was such a great Medcast :D Well a lot of the things you talked about, resonated with me. Especially what you mentioned in the beginning about your culture expecting everyone to be doctors, engineers or an architect at the very least. It's the same where I'm from and well it took a really long time to convince my folks that I'll be able to make a living through art and stuff. Also I liked what you mentioned about stylised graphics vs the de facto hyper realistic graphics in games, this has been something that's been on my mind for a while, so I'm glad you talked about it. I LOVE what they're doing with Overwatch and Gigantic so yeah. But I like Witcher hehe so I guess I'll try the new game out too XD Oh and another thing you mentioned that I felt is really true, is the thing about people feeling the need for some kinda validation. The thing with fanart, is so true. Like I hate it when people think about it like that. I remember when I used to work at a studio, my boss would discourage me from doin fanart...but ya know after a while I was like whatever, it's my personal work and I love this series/game/etc and Imma paint whatever I want to. As for who I'd paint, it's tough haha. I do like designing new takes/costumes/props for my favourite characters. Altho I do wanna see that genderbend Megaman :P
This comment got wayy too long and I'll just end this by saying your painting of Ciri looks really beautiful, I love your podcast and thanks for reading my comment [that was surprising XD].

I'm more into fan arts. I mean, really, didn't we all start with 'fan arts'? So people who say bad things about artists who prefer to do fan arts than original characters/concepts make me roll my eyes. I mean sure, fan arts, but we have different styles. So even though the character already exists, the style is different. They thumbs up or 'faves' the fan art about realistic cartoon characters and say how amazing it is but insult/offend the artist? It's--eh.
I love making new outfits, situations/Alternate Universes for already existing (pre-existing??) characters. What about you??
I have done genderbending a few times. Personally, I find it fun (when my mood is right). I get to look for references, historical accuracy (for those leaning into historically-based settings) and just put in what I think that character would look like if they were male. I've done a male Merida (Brave 2012) and it was really fun! Designing clothes and stuff, anyway...
This video was fun to watch while hearing you talk about art and other real life things. I'm from South East Asia and I understand what you meant about getting a more... 'suitable' profession like Engineering, Medicine etc. It's like those things are all that matters in the world. Pfft, really, if it weren't for artistic people, everyone would be bloody bored out of their minds and beg for entertainment like cartoons, movies, music and a whole lot more.
Businesses use artists nowadays to advertise their products. Even education uses cartoons to help out! So we're really helping them out more than they think we do.
    Cheers~!
p.s. I wish I could do that no line art thing you're doing :)) More practice.

hey ahmed, just want to ask, i don't know if you already talked about it. In what term you create another layer? i know you create multiple layer for sketching for different stage of detail. But if you color do you create new layer for highlight and another one for shadow? or do you create new layer for different part of item? like one for skin and one for sword for example?

Hi. Thanks for the vid. In another of your videos you said you should dab colors from your color palette through out your whole painting. I don't see you doing that here. Is that just a style thing or something you should try to do in every painting?

I've also been realising that same point about doing fan art as of late. It was the basis of my love for art when I was young but all of a sudden I think its cheating or something. Its sad that I have lost years to that mentality but I've finally come full circle.

Your colouring style is really cool!
One question: Do you paint on the same layer where you've drawn in black?
P.S. All the RPG games suck. They're boring and lengthy. I just don't see how people play those games.

Lengthy is why I like it, hours of play and exploration. And you aren't hemmed into a previously designed story line

Great video! Personally, I think gender-bending is an interesting idea. It's like the artist breathes some new life into an old idea by putting their little twist on it, making you look at the character for the first time again. I think it's cool in theory, just executed poorly 99% of the time... In any case, I'd love to hear your perspective on how to use reference effectively. Thank you for uploading these videos by the way!
