One of the best sounding Thumper installs on RUclips, I love this 78 Merc. I have a 78 Ranchero that I bought new back in the day with a 351M. I have a T-Bird front clip on it cause I like the pop up head lights. I also installed rear disk brakes off of a 74 Lincoln and this truck will stop on a dime. Years ago I upgraded to an Edelbrock 4bbl intake with a Holly 600. It also has long tube headers and an MSD electronic distributor with multi-spark discharge. In my garage now and just days from another big upgrade I have a Thumper cam, new Edelbrock heads, Edelbrock Airgap intake, and a pile of other stuff to put on. It sounds good now but after these new mods, I hope it will sound as good as your Merc.
Matthew, the heads were gone thru using the stock valves. I did use CompSprings and retainers. The springs a 1.64s and thats all that was done to the heads. Id love to see more of your project. Im a big fan of the 75-78 Mercs. Good luck and keep me posted

I've got a 400 filling it with an Edelbrock Performer cam, intake manifold, aluminum heads, 600cfm carb. Hoping to find some long tube headers that will work with this project. Your videos have me psyched.
Ray Gonzalez, Long tube headers are gonna be pricey. The closest I ever found for a set was made by Hooker. They are Hooker Competition series and they are for a Ranchero if I remember correctly? I used the Sanderson shorties on mine. Its a tight fit between the header and the cross member on the drivers side. Make sure you use new motor mounts and it will give you just enough clearance. Other than that, you could build you a one off set of long tubes.
Thanks for the help. After watching your videos I'll video mine after complete. Pretty much everything you've done is what I'm doing down to bigger rear end gears. Although, I've been pretty interested in adding a Gear Vendors overdrive to this mix. Running a C6, let you know
My bottom end is completely stock. I installed the cam and new timing gears. You will need to install new valve springs and retainers. Thats an easy job to do and cost about $150 for the springs and retainers. I recommend getting the heads done. But, you dont have too
Man my 76 Torino elite had the same front end. Wish I would have finished that build. It had a 351m that I was going to make in to a 400. I even had the Aussie Cleveland heads :(

Stock heads. I had them machined and installed CompCams 1.64 springs. All part numbers are in the older descriptions. The wagon is gone but the engine will soon be in my 59 FordF100
Sorry it took so long to respond. Yes. This engine is a normal guys build with Ford cost. 79 Ford 351M at 79k on it. I took the heads off and took 4 heads to a machine shop. Honestly, I had to guilt trip him into doing my heads. He was a friend of my Dads. The man who did my heads, told me what to get for valves and springs. (everything and part numbers are in the previous post) He took my 4 heads and found two that had no cracks. NO CRACKS! Just a tip. My heads are not stuck at all! The castings is the only stock part. And if you are really wanting this sound? Then do what I did. If you want performance? Go with the stall and gears. My wagon was a dog until it hit 75-80mph. Then it was badass.

For those who wanted to know what cam I have, its the Thumpr Cam and the part# is CCA32600-5 from Summit Racing.

Did you just put it in there and left everything else stock or did you have to change springs and different things and did it increase power

Ashley, CompCams Thumpr Cams come in 3 different types. My cam is the Thumpr. I ordered it thru Summit Racing. Hope this helps you

Everything but the pushrods. I used Comp Springs with stock valves.
anything specific for breaking the cam in? did you use comp's break in oil?
I used Lucas break in oil. I didn't do anything to the lower end. I will be tearing it down and doing the 434 stroker kit from Tim Meyers soon

Windsor is not the same but Cleveland, "modified", and 400 are the same.
