A friend of mine gave me this movie as a kid I'd watch it over and over and even dressed up as Dorothy for Halloween. Even when my grandma was in the hospital for a strawberry seed that made her small instenstine explode and we'd bake cookies and I'd watch this movie over at that house along with my dad. This movie meant to me a lot back then and it still does
Interesting. I've considered dressing up as one of Dorothy's three friends, Tin man, scarecrow and the cowardly lion for halloween 🎃 I can see myself as all three but I'd prefer the tin man 🤖because I have such a kind-hearted nature.

The Wizard has a lot of nerve asking them to Kill the Wicked Witch of the West and then calling it a very small task!!!!!! He's got some nerve!!!! When I first saw this when I was five years old ... I thought to myself the Wizard is sending them to their death!!!!
You also have to remember that Dorothy's fame as the slayer of the Wicked Witch of the East had reached all over the Land of Oz by the time she got to the Emerald City. For all the Wizard knew, she was a powerful sorceress, and he knew that she wore the ruby slippers; it wasn't his fault that he didn't know that she had no idea of how to work them.

The special effects are revolutionary for 1939. Most of the backgrounds are simply matte paintings to save money, yet they look incredibly realistic. I always wondered how they did the effects for the Wizard's hologram in this scene, or who they used for the image for that matter.
@@joshuariddensdale2126 There's nothing wrong with economizing; lots of movies use matte paintings, including just about every _Star Wars_ movie. The Great Head (which in the book was a huge papier mache head that the Wizard manipulated with strings) was a big rubber mask. Someone other than Frank Morgan wore it while wearing a black garment against a black background. When that film was developed, the black was gone, and all that was on it was the Head. They superimposed that over the throne room set, and added the fire. Frank Morgan of course did the voice, which the sound crew re-recorded in a tunnel to give it that echo, and then dubbed over the voice of the guy in the mask.
Dorothy says, Jiminy Cricket..... That was before Walt Disney selected Jiminy Cricket as the character's name, the phrase was used as an exclamation or being surprised or bewildered...
Gosh, the wizard is such a jerk for frightening everyone, particularly the lion who was already too scared to ask him for help. He should have granted them their wishes right then and there instead of making them risk their lives to grant him a stupid request (although I understand their need to kill the witch).
And that's the whole point. He knew that Dorothy had already killed the dictator of the Munchkins, and naturally figured she could do the same to the WWW. Besides, as we all know, the travelers already had what they thought they needed. 🙂

In the book he appeared to Dorothy as the bald head,scarecrow as a beautiful woman,tinman as a beast and lion as a ball of fire. But I guess MGM didn't have the money for all that so they just did the head.
It wasn't that so much as they just wanted to tighten up the story, which was why, among other things, they conflated Glinda the Good Witch of the South and Tattypoo the Good Witch of the North. Likewise, they combined the head with the fireball.
I love how, when Tin Man says "But if we do that, we'd have to KILL her to get it", The Wizard completely bypasses it. "Bring me her broomstick, and I'll grant your requests" lol. No sympathy whatsoever.
He knows that Dorothy has already killed one Wicked Witch, so he figures that another won't pose a problem to her either. And as we know, he allowed them to arm themselves for the job.
