- In this video I have this VW Passat 1.8T auto.
PCV valve replacement on a vw passat. I was experiencing a slight misfire at idle as well as some rough running and an engine light which was showing a rich mixture.
To test a faulty valve open the oil filler cap and if the cap gets sucked in then you most likely have a faulty pcv valve which will then cause all the other issues.

9 years later, its still the best video on the internet that shows exactly the location of the PCV valve lol
Truly happy to know that and hopefully its helpful :) Happy new year
+1 for that!
The only good video on the internet that demonstrates the location of the PCV valve. Well done sir and thank you.
Thank u so much man. Ive been watching these vids on trained mechanics and they have the cam from a distance or just show the part. Waiting 4 my Chilton in the mail and i found a good price on a replacement. With 200k+ on the motor i need to fix the rough idle issue and my throttle body is coming as well. No smoke thru that tough 1.8t. Just need her 2 run properly.
BigSteve 380 you very welcome and yes hopefully the engine should run better :)
Great video, can't believe you got the camera down there so nicely! Very well done!
This video was like 50th in search bar.. this should be up the top. Best explanation ever! Cheers my dude
Glad it helped! I wonder if modifying the title would help ::)
@@DaringBeefcake If I was you, I would start making thumbnails. They really push click rate and end up in recomendations. Maybe that could boost video in the search bar.
@@iChillArti thank you for the suggestion ill look into it..
thanks man. this really helped me solve the misfiring problem on my 2003 Audi A4 B6
Am really glad to hear that :)
Thank you for this video, I have to replace the whole assembly for the PCV this weekend.
You welcome 🙏, good luck with the job this weekend.
@@DaringBeefcake hi, did you need to loosen or break off the pipe that connects to the PCV valve from the intake manifold, I loosen the clamp and tried to tug on it but it wouldn't budge? 4:40
PCV = positive crankcase ventilation, not pressure control. It's pretty much the same meaning though. they both let exhaust gases escape the crankcase so it doesn't cause damage.
I was just gonna ask the same thing
Hi and you welcome, glad I can help, the part number of the bit that I used is 035103245A
detg
Thank you! By me was the same Problem. Audi 1.8 T. 👍👍👍
Happy to hear.
I just had my passat 1.8t pcv valve changed, it cost me 300RMB(40$). for rough idling, and code 0170(? lean),and some miss fire. afer then, air flow from 4-5g/s -> 3g/s when idling. before changing this valve, i had a shot hard plactise pipe changed, that pipe leaking caused sevre code 0170 and high STFT(short time fuel trim) and LTFT(long time ...)
Thanks man! This will help me. Were you also getting smoke from the exhaust? Mine idles fine and no smoke on startup, but once its warmed up, it emits smoke and rough/vibrating idle, aswell as losing a bit of oil over time.
+Lucas Schaaf Yes some oil was been burnt, nothing to bad though I found my problem fairly soonish so it didnt get to bad..
thanks for the detailed instructions! What is the part number for the PCV valve you replaced?
Better off just taking the intake off. I have done it your way once and it was a pain. While you have it off mind as well replace the crank case breather neck since they break quite frequently Otherwise good video :)
Your vehicle has a bunch of pipes but no hoses? Cool
Riggs Group Ltd. Thanks though I don’t have that car anymore
Thanks for the great video. Now I was able to locate it. How did you replace it? Mine is down there among lots of hoses. I had hard time to just reach the PCV by hand. No mention to use tools to remove it. Did you have to remove other hoses?
Tom Wang Hi Tom I didn't remove other hoses, only the coolant reservoir as you can see on the video it was a pain getting the valve off the pipe because it gets stuck in there, I did use a long screw driver to undo the clip around the valve i went in through the holes on the manifold, never the less wasn't easy but did came off in the end..
Thanks Buddy, Your video helped me a lot...
I am really glad to hear that.
By far one of the worst camera quality.
BUT ! The only decent video were it shows the actual emplacement and, how it should been done !
thanks my friend ! if you only knew how much you helped me on that one ! thanks you sooo much !
Glad to hear it helped, sorry about the quality of the camera it is fairly old :)
Patrick Marquis really? You haven't seen bad picture quality..
What is an "emplacement?"
This is a very informative video, and it helped me out a great deal - thank you so much ^_^
Thanks for sharing
themarine09 You welcome.
That valve when is stuck or not good you have P 0300 P0301,P0302,never P0303,P0304 .
So you know if you stil driving such a old car .
.Greatings from VW Ausäsburg Service.
I sold that car a long time ago hehe. But thanks for the tip.
What year is the 1.8T and type. If you remove the top plastic engine cover, the 3 letter type is stamped on the drivers side front corner of head. Example would be AWM used in 2003 B5.5.
+rfn944 It was a 2002 and Ive sold the car now so I wont be able to check the type sorry.
I have a6 c5 with AWT.
My question is, how can I remove all that shit with breathers recirculation and put just two hoses (one connected to lower breather, one connected to uper breather and fit those two below the car?
When I looked up the part it did. Or look anything like that. It looks like the part just behind the engine by the fire wall.

I am trying to find a video for VW CC, Dealer charging $500 to replace mine.
I know this video is old as hell but would this cause the car to smoke? Mines a 2000 passat GLS 1.8t and it rolls smoke in 2d gear like a tdi. Was told by the dealership to replace the pcv but I want more input before I dump more money into this car.
Hi, I think you could try changing the valve but i dont think it use to cause smoke like that, it is more of an idling control valve. may be you need to check the turbo.
turbo problems?
how about if its blowing and not sucking out the dip stick or oil filler cap
Well if its blowing a little that would be fairly normal but it its a lot then am not sure what can cause that.
then the valve is bad as well, only in reverse, now it's letting positive manifold pressure (boost) push through the valve and into the crankcase
Jayson Gonzalez Not necessarily. In that cas it is an older engine where the piston rings have been worn, the more wear, the more it will blow and sometimes even send oil out.
My 04 1.8t is blowing air out too. I'm going to try and replace this part. Dwayne Huston. What was the cause for yours to be blowing air?
I'm not trying to be an ass but I thought PCV meant Positive Crancase Ventilation, not pressure control valve?
Will it make it smoke if the pipes are not hooked up to manifold?
Sawed Off Period mmmm I don’t think so.
If it's menthol smoke it will be better
My 04 1.8t has the reverse problem. Air is blowing out from the oil cap and dipstick. Is this part to blame?
Ron Hines mine wasn’t blowing it was sucking air. So may be you have a different issue.
Ron Hines i suppose u could change the valve, is not that much at the end of the day.
Guys, can i just eliminate all pcv sistem from my audi 1.8t awt?
Can i just connect low and upper breather with hoses and put them below the car?
I have done this on many cars before, just dont know can i do it without consequences on this engine?
Bojan Bojanic am not sure that is possible or not since that valve works at idle i think and when the valve is broken and allows air through at idle u get a misfire rough idle and suction from oil filler cap. But i never tried getting rid of it all together.
Could the pcv hose being cut in half could that make it throw misfire codes and a mass air flow sensor code?
Its very possible since its sucking air from another place and not measuring the correct amount of air coming in. Plus misfires are common with pcv issues usually at idle.
where can I purchase the valve
I bought mine on ebay as far as I remember, though it was grey the original one that came of the my car was green.
could you link me?
the part number is 035103245A, if you type that on ebay you can see the people selling the bit and chose who you wish to purchase from, I dont remember who I bought it from it was a while ago.
Too much jabber...jabber..get on with it..
TopSecretVid lol yes sr. :}
PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation. But ok.
Yes sure, someone already mention that below on the comments, but anyway thank for pointing that out..
