    Hi 👋 guys,
So for people that want a deeper dive on the topic of how often to wash etc. I reviewed an article of a board certified dermatologist called Angela Lamb. She advises that how often you wash depends on a lot and the scalp adapts/ regulates itself depending on what you do. If you wash it more often it tends to produce more oils. If you go abit longer between washes, your hair and scalp might experience a break through! She says some people must wash more often and others can go for months!!!

@@CoilyDiariesThank you. Just somethings I do/don't do, I never detangle as my hair is never tangled I just comb or brush very gently. Before I comb, my hair is oiled to limit any breakage. I don't use coconut oil or Shea moisture my hair hates them. I use salon quality products more expensive but a little goes a long way, had my shampoo and conditioner for nearly a year. Luckily, I live in a soft water area so that is a massive plus. Once say ever 6 weeks I use a clarifying shampoo. I don't oil my scalp so the sebum can flow.

Love watching your videos because your topics are always interesting. I agree with you regarding frequent hair washing. If you consider the hair practices of women about 100 years ago, they had long hair. Washing hair wasn't something that was done frequently. Actually bathing was once a week for many households. Oils and boar brushes were used to cleanse the the scalp and rid the hair from dust, etc. It doesn't sound hygienic to our standards today but people did what they were able during that time. I actually read up on the products women used during the early 1900's even earlier and animal fat was used like beef tallow and lard. Peppermint and other herbs were used to mask the smell. I believe we do way too much manipulation to our hair and rely upon too many products. Keep it very simple and cleanse, condition when needed. That has been my practice roughly three to four weeks before I wash my hair. I definitely noticed shine, strength, softness and growth. Indigenous women probably are our best examples from the ages. No hair dryers, no heating tools, no scissors just nature lots of fresh air, physical activity and whole foods. Take care and blessings to you ❤

Sis this so true! What’s worse is being looked down upon because you don’t fit in today’s standards of cleanliness. How did people of old have such luscious hair with no conditioners shampoos and fancy tools. Even straight hair women wore protective styles all the time. Ever since shampoo, our hair has gotten dryer, shorter, frizzy and dry! Am glad my mind is free to explore the best ways to look after my hair 🌺😍

Hi! Sorry I am a little late to the party as this video posted 11 days ago, but I'm here now! Thank you so much for posting it. It has been a blessing to me. Washing every 2 - 3 weeks works best for me, yet I feel guilty for missing the 2-week deadline even though my hair is telling me she is fine. Why? Propaganda!!!! I have heard so much that you should wash weekly and definitely don't go more than 2 weeks. Now after watching this video and reading some of these opinionated, judgmental comments, I refuse to be entrapped by rules that don't work for me. I choose to embrace knowledge and listen to my hair moore. I also choose to embrace and appreciate that different people have different needs. Because of the points you made in this video and sharing why/how you made the decision to wash less often, I feel so much more confident doing what works for my hair. Don’t get me wrong it got me far but I have discovered better ways to clean my scalp weekly, introduce water saturation, and maintain moisture without doing a full wash and detangle (gently)session.
And most important (to me anyways), is I have found suitable truly protective hair styles that facilitate my 3-4 weeks between full blown wash day and still look groomed for life, work, church, etc. I think it’s important to stress that I still do weekly maintenance and scalp care. Just no more 3-6hr full blown wash day routines.

One method does not fit all, but I 100% agree with you. I wash my hair every 4-6 weeks with the 6th week being my sweet spot. If I go longer than that my hair just does not accept moisture from my products and gets dry. I try to prevent the dryness from happening and so if I wash at 6 weeks I don’t have to worry about product buildup keeping moisture out. My scalp tells me too….if it is too itchy I may have to wash it around 4 weeks but that is rare. When I use new products sometimes my scalp protests after a while. I am trying to gain the courage to try washing my hair in my twists. I think you method may work…but lord…I am scared to try but want to try. I keep between 30-35 twists in my hair. I think your method will work for me as long as my hair is hella moisturized and sealed with my olive oil and castor oil mixture and allowed to dry before retwisting. I care about long hair so my routine will be different to yours. Most of my audience have length retention goals too. Hygiene is relative, for someone who washes their hair daily or several times a a week, your weekly washing routine could be seen as unhygienic
My hair is this long because of protective styles! Wigs are part of that. You may not know this but am a new mum and wigs have saved me a lot this year! Let’s try to just support each other as women. At the end of the day each of us will do as they please 🤷🏽‍♀️

I also work out and the sweat is too much to handle and, as you said, dries the hair because of the salt in it. But working out is great for our overall health and to promote blood circulation to the scalp. So, you might use a gentle shampoo and wash you hair in chunky twists to avoid manipulation.
Edit: I've seen plenty of women with tailbone length hair that Wash once a week and retain length, you just have to be very gentle.

Co-wash your hair in between washes and do regular protein treatments.

I’m a fitness instructor. I work out a LOT and sweat from my head. I wash my hair weekly. To me, scalp health trumps hair health. My hair is dead, my scalp is alive, an extension of my skin. If you don’t take care of your scalp (cleaning it) you will develop all kinds of problems. The problems that I experience from manipulating my hair every week are minimal. I enjoy my hair. I wear it how I want and do it as many times as I want. I’m just fine. The only two set backs that I have had have been from color and that darn 30 day detox.

Black women please wash your hair. infrequent hair washing propaganda is the last thing that’s needed rn considering most bw still think it’s okay to wash hair once a month or even less than that 😬. At that point throw Hair health out the window it’s just unhygienic. You may not smell it but I promise the rest of the world can smell your dirty hair and scalp it’s one of the worse smells 🤢 get a shower filter, use a very mild moisturizing shampoo, stop detangling in the shower, find inexpensive conditioners and deep conditioners that come in larger sizes, maybe stretch the week to 10-12 days. So many things to consider before this. If it’s that hard to detangle you may need a trim.

My issue is not your opinion or the fact you disagree. It’s the stereotype that if you don’t wash your hair weekly you somehow are unhygienic and you smell! I know the smell of dirty hair and sebum build up and sweat this is not what I encourage. There are ways to keep your hair and scalp clean without shampooing weekly! The propaganda of making black women feel uneasy about not washing their hair weekly is the reason I will continue to speak up against this. People that wash their hair daily or several times a week could very well find your routine “unhygienic “ as a weekly washer. Lifestyle, routine, sebum level etc all affects how often you wash. This whole 7-10 wash is really about hydration. I can’t imagine detangling my waist length hair weekly! Absolutely unachievable for me. The difference between you and me is that am not looking down on you or making you feel “abnormal” just because I have different views! I support women doing what is working and finding ways to trouble shoot the issues that come with it.

Agree 100% this is 2023. I didn’t realize people were still doing this and claiming it’s hygienic. You put it nicely, but reading these comments and reading the creators clap back, prices less. A whole bunch of nasty people. It’s like wearing one shirt for a month and not washing it. But of course it’s her hair and if she desires to walk around with not washing her hair that’s her business. The youtuber What the kinks grew waist length hair washing it weekly. These kind of videos gave black girls curls validity in the space. Disclaimer:This being unsanitary is just my personal view , as I am sure you are aware this is not the norm for everyone.

@@CoilyDiaries Looking at statistics black women are the number one sufferers from alopecia, it’s often bw in their Middle Ages who had a full head of “healthy hair.” The cause? Chronic Scalp inflammation from not washing the hair over the years. Microbes, sweat, sebum, pollution and productions build up on the scalp, oxidize and cause inflammation, the perfect storm for alopecia and other scalp conditions. This is not a conspiracy or to make women feel bad or less than it’s been scientifically studied look at any dermatology or trichology paper on the subject. I promise you can find a sustainable way to wash your hair more frequently. In the past we have done the best we could with the information, resources and products that were available. Now in 2023 there’s so much more information, resources and products available for our hair and healthy hair in general, even drug store products have come a long way and have more sophisticated formulations. It’s time to unlearn all the outdated information that’s just plain harmful.
There is no one sized fits all for any hair care but there is the general profesional advice to wash your hair as often as your hair type allows, not as infrequently as your hair type allows, that’s why I offered some lee way but consider that once a week is already considered infrequent washing yet a lot of bw still think that is too much. It’s mostly a mental thing in my opinion becuase it’s been ingrained over generations. I’m usually not one to tell women what to do with their hair and I believe that the best hair care routine is one that makes you confident to go out and live your life everyday no matter what you choose to do to it, but there are boundaries and when harmful hair practices are presented and accepted as healthy hair care options by the majority of a population that’s where I get frustrated. I wish you the best on your hair care journey and hope you reach your goals. My goal is not to make anyone feel less than but to dispel misinformation.
