  • This is our walkthrough of the Ross Park Mall just north of Pittsburgh, PA from May 23, 2019. This is a rather cookie-cutter boring Simon mall. We happened to pass through the area and filmed this mall on a whim. It felt rather meh walking around this mall.
Songs used in this video (in order):
    Johnny Pearson - Green Lanes
    Tony Hatch - Smooth Chaser
    Hervé Roy - Brass Locomotion
    Jean Schulteis - Soul Time
    Steve Gray - Wonder Groove
    -------------------------------
I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The current health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the shutdowns and restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall.
I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this.
There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, RUclips, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush...

In 1991 or so I lived in the apartments right next to this mall. Near one entrance was a little newsstand, and in the back of the newsstand there was a small stand-up humidor. I used to go in, buy a cigar, clip it, light it and stroll the mall. (This was before cigars became so trendy).

Two years later and I'm pleased to report that Ross Park Mall is still BOOMING. It's surprising that, despite dead malls consuming the US, Ross Park Mall remains fully active and incapable of going extinct. Probably because McKnight Road is always jam packed. Many people pass by the mall on their way to work in downtown. The Apple Store and Macy's are probably a big source of traffic. I love malls, and always felt gypped that the closest mall to me is so boring hehe. Ross Park Mall isn't very visually interesting. It does its job and has a decent ambiance, but it is rather bland.

There are a few now, lock-down casualties I'm sure. But, this mall tends to replace things fairly easily, so I'm sure they won't be empty forever.

@@TheAskTrixieChannel I can't think of a single mall with 100% after the last year.

WOW, did you know that the Macy's end was originally built for Gimbels, but they never got to occupy it because British American Tobacco (BATUS), the conglomerate which owned both Gimbels and Saks at the time, pulled the plug on the 37 store Gimbels division in 1986? Kaufman's moved into the site in time for the mall opening and closed their site further up McKnight Road where Stein Mart currently occupies one of the floors.

Yay! My overly boring and exhausting Simon mall up the street from my house. Not making a shot at your video. Love the video, actually. Just making shots at the mall as my feelings toward it are the same as yours, Pat. Lol

@@RawRealRetail I'm actually glad you did film it. This place changes little by little here from time to time. Still a Simon Mall but I like to be able to see the mall I grew up going to minus the Sears and Media Play.

Oh, THAT's what that was - China Max. Yeah, that's gone. Moon Sushi (originally a stand-alone eatery on the bottom floor, near California Pizza) is moving into its spot.

I don’t like this mall. It’s bland and boring, and has your standard stores. In comparison to Pittsburgh Mills, even though it has waaay less stores, it still looks way better.

    • @RawRealRetail
      @RawRealRetail  3 года назад

I didn't like it either both times we visited. But it is what the rest want, and it serves them well. Bland and boring is the result to dirt, which dark colors and wood can hide, people have found out. The solution is white shiny marble, which cannot hide dirt. It's a shopping place, not a gawking or meeting place, like the mall used to be.

You know what I mean R&RR don't you? You remember the music that accompanied the bun coaxing the hod dog and the dancing soda straws? That's what it sounds like.
