I replaced every component of my system a couple of years ago when the diaphragm in the pressure tank failed. When that happens the pump has to run every time you use water. It’ll burnout the pump if not corrected. I wish I had seen this video back then. It would have made the job go s lot faster. Great video! BTW - thank you so much for NOT using background music!
Steve, I just wanted to say thanks for what you do because these videos helped me get my well/plumbing back working correctly. The pipe that connects the pressure switch to the main line was packed full of sediment. This pages needs a tip jar or something. Thank you!!
After watching your video ( and about a dozen others on the subject) I was able to be the site expert on my sons dead well water system. Replaced pump. Recharged tank. Replaced pressure gage and drain spigot. Could not have done it without you. Thanks about $1000 dollars.
Thank you for making all these videos. I got a house with oil and a well. Always had city and NG. You video's helped me fix my oil burner one cold night and this video showed me I had a bad pressure switch on the well Was coming on at 23 and shutting off at 60. I now have a 30/50 and nice even water pressure. .

good job. even though that tank had 40 psi, i would bet dollars to donuts its bad or going bad. for one, when the pump is running, you can hear water filling in the air chamber. secondly, the pro-access wx-203's were terrible. i put a shitload of them in and replaced most of them under warranty. a little pro tip is when the pressure is drained off of the system, give the tank a shake. it should feel completely empty and light. if you hear water sloshing around in there, then the tank is likely shot. it is possible for the tank to have the proper amount of air and have a bad bladder. the wire connectors was a nice touch.
Good video. Just a suggestion - on the next opportunity maybe cover how to properly check the air tank pressure both on wells and hydronic heating systems.
Thanks for taking the time to upload this video. I have a question for you. What is that somewhat flexible black pipe that is shown in this video that connects the well to the pressure tank? I am having trouble finding what that is called. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Good job. The home water systems in South Florida don't have pressure relief valves. Good idea, may save the pump one day if the pressure switch sticks.
Good Video Steve. Professional touch to take the time to use the crimp connectors, a hack would've just left the bare wires on the screw terminals like the last guy.
Thanks for the video. That check valve should be replaced. Noisy as hell.... I know unless you're taking the entire assembly apart, replacing tank, etc not worth it. Maybe saving customer money too but that check valve would drive me nuts. I've had the same problem in my own home.
Hi Steve, I have a gauge by the pressure tank, just like in your video. I also have a gauge on the output side of the well pump a few feet away. Should these two gauges read the same while the pump is off? The gauge on the well pump bounces during pumping and always reads 10 psi higher than at the tank.
Steve, great video. I notice some rattling when filling. I had my tank and pressure swith replaces due to short cycling. I noticed the new onr rattles. What causes the rattle?
Love your videos thank you for posting I do have a question regarding my pump this morning I woke up to the circuit breaker being tripped I turned it on and it trip again any ideas as to what might cause that

had a thunder storm and power surge. No water coming to house so I went to reset button thinking it tripped and it starts and water ran in house for a couple of mins then shuts off. Do you know what it could be hopefully not pump just replaced pump 4 years ago it's underwater pump also thanks
I have a leak just before the pressure release valve... how do I fix that? wrap the joint? take it out? if I take it out, how to stop the water from flowing out? the power to the water pump is switched off....
this is what I'm doing now I'm replacing the to the points and the gauge because there's no water pressure and I'll ask around and nobody would give me a straight answer they keep saying there's something busted but I don't know if they could be busted somewhere under the ground or in the submergible pump because everything is only two years old so it's close to being brand new but there's no water coming out of the spicket and won't fill up or flush commode do you have any idea what it could really be I'm puzzled
Hi Steven, Could you please tell me what the rattling noise is between 18:50 and 19:00 in this video? I have a similar rattle when my pressure switch kicks on and then stops when it kicks off and am wondering if it is the pressure gauge, check value or other and is it a cause for concern? Thanks
I'm wondering why all these tanks sit right on the floor with their plumbing sitting just above the floor. Why not raise it up and sit it in a concrete or metal block 16 or 18 or 24 inches above the floor. (OK, this one is about 4 inches off the floor.) As I get older, I kinda like the idea of sitting on a stool to work on this instead of kneeling on the hard floor.
We have a pump next to the pressure tank that ran dry for hours before we noticed. It still turns on and makes noise like it's running, but pressure isn't building. Does this mean that the pump is burned up?
Steve, nice video. How would one go about checking to see if the pressure switch is bad and needs replacing before disconnecting everything, is there a way to bypass or jump the wires to see if the tank fills up without the switch. I do not have any pressure and when the switch is on I do not hear the switch clicking on or off, so I'm thinking its a bad switch, but not sure. any advice?
+Jeff Della Penna i would watch the gauge to see how its operating . if its a 40/60 switch it will kick on at 40 and shut off at 60 then drop to 40 before kicking back on if it does that the switch is good a lot of timed the nipple going to the switch gets blocked with rust all it needs is a cleaning . there are 3 different switches a 20/40 30/50 40/60 tank pressure is always 1 psi below lowest setting 19 psi for a 20/40 switch
Steve I’m someone who knows nothing about water tanks and I like your videos but - they would be more helpful if you could elaborate more about the details on what your doing what things to check for when the pump doesn’t work. I bought switch, replaced it but it’s still not working.
Took the time to add all new parts, blow off valve, pressure gauge, pressure switch.....but crimped new connector ends onto old crusty wire ends, would have been better to strip the wires back 1/2" and expose fresh new copper to crimp the wire ends to.....then at the end you can see the rusty water filter to the upper left of the water tank, wonder if the filter was changed?....a long due filter change will impede water flow and make it seem like water pressure is low....
Steve, my ears lit up when that pump was running, and the pressure was getting up around 50 until the pressure switch is satisfied. What causes that rattling sound? I've been wanting to know that for years....some systems are quiet, but occasionally there are ones like this that like to sing their tune. Is it the tank, one of the fittings such as a check valve chattering, or something else?
Dwight Bennett i would say its the check its on a spring ..its a spring check that has a rubber seat.i do not recall hearing anything unusaly that is the only moving part in the setup .that i would say could make a rattling noise
Steve - I have no water filling the tank. My gauge reads 35 and the pressure switch is closed. I do get water., but with no pressure. What do you think?
+chesky baba you might have a bad extrol tank daphrame is broken ,so when you run water the pump comes on and runs ,also nipple to switch could be blocked ,them gauges don't always read right if there old .
+steven lavimoniere Thanks for the quick reply. If the diaphragm is broke - wouldn't it fill up with water? Not the case here - it holds air pressure. Changed out the old gauge - still reading about 35. Put on a new pressure switch - no change, stays off - could it be at 35 lbs, the well pump is too tired and shot to fill the tank or should the extrol fill regardless?
hey steve , when you check the air in the tank for pressure , do you drain the tank or not . also should the valve on the tank be opened or closed when you check it ? the valve i am referring to is the one between the pump and tank.
hi, thanks for your youtube video. I got a pump that is humming, we replaced the pump and found it is not the pump, we think that one phase is not working, we checked the circuit breaker panel and it is fine, could this be the capacitor or the relay?
Great Job Steve, not to long ago I had to check the expansion tank on a 150 ton chiller. I had an argument with the building manager about how the tank needs to be drained before checking the pressure. The proper way to check it is to drain it like you did. I should show him this video lol
I noticed the gauge you just installed was reading 10 psi before you turned the pump on. Either your new gauge is broken or you need to add air to the tank. Your tank is water logged.
Hi Steven.. new sub! :) hey..quick question.. my pressure tank loses 5 psi every time is cutts off. example, if I have it at 30/50 (tank at 28), whenever the pressure cutts off at 50, it drops down to 45.. if I set it to 40/60, then it comes down to 55.. I have replace the pressure switch and the gauge but the issues is still there... once it drops the 5 psi, it won't continue to drop anymore - I have also emptied the water tank of water and air and refilled it..still the same... any suggestions?
+steven lavimoniere the tank is pretty new.. there's no leak,..once it drops the 5 psi it won't drop anymore even after an hour.. could there be anything else? - when I say the tank loses 5 psi.. I don't mean the tank.. I mean at the pressure switch.
+Mac Pelao well a 40/60 switch turns the pump on at 40 and shuts the pump of at 60 .then drains down it 40 before turning back on . maybe you need a new switch or the nipple is blocked going to it
Steven, on my first post I mentioned I had replaced the swich and the gauge to see if it corrected the problem, but it did not...nothing is blocked. - some have suggested it might be the bladder that is over expanding then when the switch cutts off, it reduces it self losing the 5 psi.. could that be a possibility?
I have a problem, were it is I have put all new stuff in water tank, pressure guage water, pressure switch, now the water pressure guage keeps cutting on and off, Please Help!

hi all, i just put in a new cold water pressure tank, new pressure switch and new psi gauge.water seems to be working good, but my psi gauge keeps slowly dropping in pressure without using any water.any ideas, thanks, kevin.
Hi steven, no i did not. i don't know much about this kind of thing.i have a submersible pump in the well. does that not have some kind of a check valve in that. If not can you maybe lead me through that so i can put one in,im not even sure where or how to put a check valve in.... also iv'e been reading some of your things you have on here,i understand you live in nova scotia ,great place, i know because i live here aswell lol.
you need a check valve just before the tank tee coming in from well its a 1 "brass check valve only goes in one way that will stop the bleed back into well
I'm getting ready to work on an a 35 yr old well tank system and I noticed the check valve is installed about 4 ft prior to the tee . Is that okay or do I need to relocate it ?

hi all, i just put in a new cold water pressure tank, new pressure switch and new psi gauge.water seems to be working good, but my psi gauge keeps slowly dropping in pressure without using any water.any ideas, thanks, kevin.
did you add a check valve at tank???
Hi steven, no i did not. i don't know much about this kind of thing.i have a submersible pump in the well. does that not have some kind of a check valve in that. If not can you maybe lead me through that so i can put one in,im not even sure where or how to put a check valve in.... also iv'e been reading some of your things you have on here,i understand you live in nova scotia ,great place, i know because i live here aswell lol.
you need a check valve just before the tank tee coming in from well its a 1 "brass check valve only goes in one way that will stop the bleed back into well
thanks you very much steven the check valve works great.the gauge stays where it should now.
I'm getting ready to work on an a 35 yr old well tank system and I noticed the check valve is installed about 4 ft prior to the tee . Is that okay or do I need to relocate it ?
should that regulator be after the pressure gauage?
