In this video I made a set of fancy looking Dice on the lathe! Inspired by several craftsman, which showed their products on pinterest. If youre one of them, tell me, so i can give a link to your dice!
I made them the size of "normal" dice and tried to keep them halfway balanced. Since its a small freestyle project, I didnt go on 100% accuracy here.
I hope you like it!

Let’s Rate (answer as a comment): 1) cyberpunk dice 2) steampunk dice 3) Star Wars dice or 4) you got a better name? 😅
Hugs!
Happy Birthday Brother of Mister Patina!
Happy birthday to Mister Patina's brother-in-law! Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!
Steampunk isn't steel, the minute you make it out of steel, it's not steampunk, steampunk dice means brass.
Definitely a Starwars/Beskar vibe. I would buy these in a heartbeat.
this makes me think of something from Star Wars or Firefly- both futuristic and old at the same time. Super cool
Well explained, sir! Thanks!
Those could easily be star wars universe themed dice
Haha, thanks!
If he could just find a way to make more of them and fast. I bet they're sold easily.
That’s the point. If I’d offer them, they’d be pretty expensive 😕
Yeah, I was thinking these were more Star Wars than steampunk.
I would absolutely buy a pair of these.
Good thing he doesn't play Shadowrun or you'd still be in the workshop
😅😅
hmm but some dnd 😂
Never played, actually, but when we played the Palladium games in the 90s we only needed D4 D6 D8 D10 D12 D20 and D100. Rarely more than 8 of each. No big deal. 😂
Never seen anything like it personally! I love them very unique and done well
Thanks, iam glad you like them!
Awesome design! I think brass would give to it much stronger steampunk vibe, in steel it looks to me more like cyberpunk (old style cyberpunk, not modern "neon" one).
You’re right! Thanks for explanation!
What an absolutely wonderful birthday present. My brother in law made me a chest 43 years ago for Christmas. It's one of my prized possessions. I will give up everything but my husband & cats before I will part with this chest. It means the world to me. Gifts infused with love do that. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag an Herrn Patinas Schwager. Möge Ihr Tag voller Freude und Liebe sein.❤❤
And as I said before, the filming is spot on. A wonderful visual feast.
Thanks for this wonderful story Vickie! Iam sure he’ll read it 🙂❤️
Classiest set of dice on RUclips
Pretty cool, sir! Clearly a lot of time and energy spent just to make those little guys. I’m sure your brother in law appreciated them. I’m always intrigued to watch what people can do on a lathe and a mill. Very impressive.
Hey B, iam always pretty glad that you like my work 🙂
Future Punk Dice
Those are such an amazing gift!
These belong to a Sci-fi movie. *very* good.
Haha, yes! Thanks!
Happy birthay, brother-in-law!
Im sure he’ll read it 🙂
Major Star Wars cantina vibes. "Hey stranger, fancy a wager?"
Haha!
Dude. Looks like something straight from Star Wars, or something future dystopian. I'd honestly love to buy me a set of those, would you ever decide to maybe sell a few
Im thinking something of an online shop or so, where I can offer 'easy' projects like this.
What you think?
@@misterpatina I think that would be perfect!
@@WinchesterxNLI let you know when it’s opened 😉
First time to see such dice; beautiful indeed!❤
Thank you 🙏
They looks very nice 👍
Thanks my friend!
Looks like a die that is used on Star Trek...................beyond cool...as always
Haha, thanks!
That looks amazing. It’s the kind of thing that you would see in a Star Wars film. You really did a fantastic job. Your brother in law is really lucky that you made him them.
enjoyed viewing you make the dice as well as the cool machines in use .
I collect dice and various gaming paraphernalia and these are the coolest looking dice I've ever seen. Really beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Another great idea Mr P.
Thanks!
Love them! 😮
Vegas isn't ready, stunning work👍
I really loved the dice you made with steel and brass and these dice were really cool to. Very well done and 2 thumbs way up! Also love your channel!
Thank you so much!
You're so welcome
Nice work 💯
Thanks!
BEAUTIFUL again!!!
Thank you so much!
Wow Mr. Patina!!! Excellent idea for a project and an excellent result 👏👏👏 !!! The finish on the dice is great! Thanks for sharing 🙏. 😎
Thank you so much! Iam glad you enjoyed!
Beautiful!
oh, and you rolled them this time:)
Yes! Sorry for not rolling them the last time 😅
cool design
Those are really cool. I wonder if you could speed up the process by using slightly larger square stock and using the rounding cutter on the lathe to smooth the edges over. I also wonder if it'd be possible to make a stamp to indent each face instead of cutting them. Just something to consider if you want to make some merch.
Thank you so much for your inspiration! Iam currently thinking about merchandise/production, and it’s pretty complicated 😅
They are so good, now if you could make a set that rolled true. They look like dice future ai/robots would use.
Very cool
If you make a steampunk style, you should do it from brass, or copper
Very cool!
Looks nice. Still wanne see a set of d&d dice.
I wonder if they could be used as whiskey cubes too. What an awesome gift - I'm sure will be cherished & handed down generations! 👍🙏👏
After a good clean up, why not? 🙂
! I love them very unique and done well
Thanks!
They have a nice sci fi look to them.
Amazing…one of the coolest dice sets I’ve ever seen, you should sell those! I’ll buy the first set!!! Great vid love the Channel!
Haha, thanks! Iam thinking about making a shop 🙂
When that is discovered years from now, experts will look to the Rosetta Stone to decipher its meaning.
Nice. This vaguely reminds me of a "Dice" a mate made as a gear knob for his show car. His was a block of alloy that he glued/ peened brass rods into for the dots, then machined it into about a 3" rounded cube. It was drilled and tapped through one corner to screw onto the gear stick shaft, and looked really pretty when the brass patinaed to a nice contrast with the alloy, but he DID have to put (IIRC) a silicon tow ball cover over it when driving the car anywhere. Apparently it was uncomfortable as hell to use, left black marks all over your hand, and would almost get to skin removing temperatures in summer if the car was parked in direct sunlight........... Looked pretty though. 😁
The lines for numbers idea has made me think though. I'm wondering if there's any orientation of lines where they can extend around the edges to become the lines on other faces? If that would work I'm thinking that machining all the lines deeply into a semi finished steel blank, then filling them in with braze before machining the dice to size might be a relatively easy way to get the effect I'm imagining. 🤔
That's a nice looking set of dice. Happy birthday to your BIL.
Thanks a lot!
Rammstein dice. Pretty cool. 👍🏻👌🏻
Haha, I like the name!
@@misterpatina cool. Because I like your videos. 😂
They might just be the best dice on the internet! I love the "Cyberpunk" look, and the tarnish/patina on the dice, and the peening on the faces! Also, the numbers being slots to the side is genius- I have never seen that! Gorgeous dice and a great video as always :-)
Edit: Did you happen to see Chronova Engineering's video where they showed how to cut a bunch of different solids on the lathe and mill? They are all basically dice, and they would be awesome in this steampunk style!!
Thank you so much Martin, iam glad youre back ;-)
Didnt see it yet, but ill have a look later!
Nice and exotic.
Tough call whether I like these or the gold/silver pair you made recently. Leaning towards these because of the unique design. Both were executed beautifully and the craftsmanship as always never fails to impress. Watching you work reminds me of Saturdays with my dad as a kid. Always something new to look at and wonder over. Thanks, Herr P.
Thank you so much! Especially for your heartwarming story with your dad, iam always happy when my videos give you memories.
Thanks!
I would love to buy one of these. Well done! ❤
I should build a shop.
I like the rough finish best. That die is more tactile and natural.
Beautifully rendered dice! Maybe there will be a set of stone washed dice in the future?
Great idea, I keep it in mind 🙂
Hi mister Patina beautifully done good job well done
Thanks Vince!
These are so cool-looking! Well done sir, I hope your brother in law liked them!
Thanks! Yes, he does 🙂
They're way more Star Wars than Steampunk. But, I like them. Good job.
But steampunk won’t sue me for naming it 😅😅
Thanks!
Wow!
Поразительная усидчивость и увлеченность своим делом! Вы настоящий - Профессионал! 🔥👍
Spasibo!
With those tools...everybody can make those dices
Nice
Those are very cool. I'd like to see you make a 20 sided dice for those of us who play Dungeons and Dragons the old fashioned way. Or better yet, a whole set, from 4 to 20.
The D20 will come, sir. The whole set would be a little too much 😅
Star Wars dice!
Einfach nur geil!
Gruß Tino
Dank dir!
Nice 👍
Thanks!
This is looking terminator dice 😊😊😊
Haha!
SO geil :)
Danke dir! 🙂
WOW!
Dude that’s awesome!!! I want one!!! 🤟🤟
…just one? 😅
Thanks!
Name your price good sir 🤟🤟
Very nice work M.P.. Thx for sharing that with us... Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving for you and your family.. take care my friend...
Thank you so much! The same for you and yours 🙂
These would probably also look pretty sick if you did the cold bluing after the dimpling. So that the filed edges make a sorta cage and the number lines look like they poke out from the edge. Contrasting against the dark dimpling.
Oh, pretty great idea! I keep it in mind!
Würde ich kaufen!👍
Прикольный кубик) А еще им можно напитки охлаждать, бросать его в бокал😂
Haha, you’re right! 🙂
@@misterpatina With respect, bro😀
напитки для железа слишком агрессивная среда, будет реагировать, портить и напиток и сами ржаветь
для напитков из камня делают
I liked the number symbolism..
Nice video 👍👍
Thanks!
Прикольно получилось :)
Spasibo!
Buen trabajo, pero... Esos dados están equilibrados en sus seis caras?
Does each side have identical probability of coming up?
You know what would have been a great idea if you're doing steampunk is if you could do half the digits on each dice with a brass inlay. Just a thought, awesome video either way.
That’s a really cool idea, I keep it in mind for future projects 🙂
Doomsday dice!!! 👍
😅👍
Would love to see you make a metal slime from dragon quest :)
Nice dice! Nice dice in a vice! And remember: Twice the dice are twice as nice at thrice the price! 😉
🤣🤣🤣
Martin, you never fail to amaze me. Thanks! ❤️
@@misterpatina 🙂🐵❤
Did you do anything to ensure the die was balanced? ie make sure you didn't take too much material off one side with the "digits" to ensure it won't favor a particular side?
He mentioned that he did exactly that, "roughly" IIRC.
But if the dice were to be used in earnest - gambling for money, for instance - you'd need to test them by throwing a few thousand times, to make sure they aren't biased.
Not that any serious gambler would accept someone else's home-made dice - a family board game like Monopoly, for play money, would be more appropriate (and even families can get into bitter quarrels over such games).
Correct, I did it by the rule of thumb, knowing that these guys don’t roll pretty well because of the weight.
Very nice indeed 👍.
I remember going to see this magician, come dark storyteller at the gild hall in Leicester were they found the body of King Richard the third.
He had this black metal ball about 1.3” in diameter it had spikes all over it.
The spikes were 2” longe & starting at 3mm leading to a very sharp points. There was around 16 spikes in total it looked like a sea urchin. He said it was a Russian poisoning device from the Cold War. Have a go at making one it looked really cool & I know you like making cool stuff.
Kind regards Del.
I’d like to get a pair.
thank you very much❤ i look forward to play with it while beeing in meetings ❤
Gerne! Freu mich aufs Wochenende 🙂👍
Sauber 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Danke!
Those are very cool. I was wondering how you were going to keep them balanced 👍
Oh I tell while milling the digits. I took off the same material on every side (rule of thumb, no mathematics here). Like the '1' is wide and long, while the '6' has thin, short lines. Same for the other sides.
Это стильно 😎
Spasibo!
👍👍👍@@misterpatina
Really cool! How did you balance the die? Being made of metal/alloy the number carvings are heavier/lighter than eachother. Or maybe i missed this in the video.
Try some D&D dice, the d20 would be a great challenge for you i bet. Probably could get away with stamping the numbers on such a complex die.
Yes, I made the 1 wider and longer, and the 6‘s lines are shorter than the other ones - just in order to keep a rough balancing. But, didn’t do any Math here, since they don’t roll pretty good because of the weight.
Ready for mass production because I'm buying
Haha!
Greetings from St. Petersburg!
Ocean and all his friends are quietly going crazy. Do you understand that your route to Las Vegas is now completely closed? And backgammon players will definitely curse you. But creating a shagreen surface with a hammer is a cool idea, Kai. Well, in my opinion, it's a cross between Star Wars and Blockamp's District 9.
Haha, thank you so much! Fun fact: im in good contact with some Casinos since my first dice video - cant tell more ;-)
Iam glad you like my work! Thanks Aleks!
@@misterpatina Well, well, well......🤔 Well, we are waiting for a revolution in the gambling business. 😂
@@misterpatina Thank for YOU, Kai! You make us better.
I can certainly appreciate the effort put into this, but the same thing can be achieved by forging, but with a small fraction of the material waste, and much less time involved
When I read this I saw cyberdyne
Those turned out amazing. I wish I had a mini mill to be able to make them. Unless you know of a way I could make them with just my mini lathe
Depends on how Mini the lathe is…;)
More like cyberpunk instead steampunk. Anyway its beautiful.
Funny, I thought about naming it cyberpunk! 🙂
Я бы заказал такие😊
I know English isn't your first language, so just for future reference: one die, two dice. It's one of those weird irregular English plurals.
Moving on: I wouldn't call these steampunk, because the line design isn't really in keeping with that aesthetic. It's a very modern design, but steampunk is very much a Victorian-era aesthetic. Also, mildy patinated (heh) brass and copper are the preferred color. For a steampunk aesthetic, I'd suggest serifed Roman numerals; your design and material choice feels very futuristic, but a rough battered one, like cyberpunk or, as someone else suggested, a Star Wars type space opera where everything looks used and grimy.
And to reassure you: those are minor comments, because I _love_ these. I've been seeing dice sets with this line design floating around in the past few months, typically resin, in a dark color with a contrasting color for the lines, but a big difference between those and yours is that you varied the line width so that they fill their respective faces nicely and are even easier to read! I love that! Although I fear for any surface the user rolls them on 😅. _Definitely_ gonna need a dice tray if you don't want the table dented. I love the hammered texture, and it makes it easier to distinguish between the two if you need to. Also, kudos for using a mass-produced six-sided die for reference; the numbered sides have a specific position relative to each other, such that, as you showed, if you have the one at the top with the other two low sides visible, the two is on the left and the three is on the right, and any given opposing sides should sum to seven, so if 1 is on top, 6 should be on the bottom.
Well done! I don't go for metal dice, in general, because I think they're too heavy and I don't want to carry a set appropriate for any of the games I play around for game nights (that's a lot more than two) and also see above about being hard on tables, but I would absolutely adore a set like this one. 💜
Solo le faltó una templada en aceite para que reboten más
In order to take of the same amount on each side did you take a weight count before you milled and the took another after the one. For the other sides you just divide the difference from the first measurement, correct?
So, in this case I did "freestyle". As you could see, the "1" was broad and long, while the "6" has short an thin lines. So I was motivated to balance it, but didnt put any mathematics in it.
@@misterpatina freestyle... I love it. Turned out awesome.
You do realise that in using that asymmetric design it could make them like loaded dice, unless using just as fidget dice.
They are fidget dice. Just because of the weight 😅
Сделано классно, но, друг, аккуратннее с напильником на токарном станке...
Мой ученик тоже с кубиков начал.
