  • Artificial intelligence is opening new doors and posing significant challenges for the entire music industry. As we all adapt to this new world, ASCAP is working to keep creators at the center of how music is made, consumed and monetized. Helping music creators navigate through the age of AI was one of the main reasons the ASCAP Lab launched the 2023 Music and AI Challenge, a startup incubator held in partnership with the NYC Media Lab.
In this documentary short, the five selected teams share how they are leveraging AI to build innovative tools for making and experiencing music, informed by their own backgrounds as composers and musicians. You’ll hear from the mentors, including ASCAP members, who guided the teams in developing their technologies and exploring the copyright implications of their work. These music industry professionals also offer their perspectives on how AI is impacting music creators and the value of forging relationships across the music tech landscape.
The 2023 Music and AI Challenge is one facet of ASCAP’s ongoing commitment to operating as the only US performing rights society that is creator first and future-forward. As ASCAP Chief Strategy & Digital Officer Nick Lehman puts it in the documentary: “It’s important for us to have a seat at the table, to be in the room where these concepts are not just concepts - where they’re being applied in the industry.”
In 2023, the ASCAP Board of Directors adopted a set of six key, creator-centric principles guiding our response to AI. Read the principles and learn more about all the ways ASCAP continues to shape the future of music and AI at www.ascap.com/ai.

Thanks ASCAP. Hopefully we Artists can use the voice of great artists through Ai. I would be excited to for example get one of my songs to sound like Jim Reeves is singing it etc.

I use AI to help me write scripts for RUclips videos... Additionally, I am beginning to use it to design amazing living spaces. IMO this technology is going to revolutionize the way we live and work. Utilizing AI in daily workflow is a must-learn skillset just like using a computer was when they went mainstream.
This is a positive and concice comment about this video recomended by AI Copilot.

As long as video editors working for major organizations like ASCAP continue to fail to correct panning on audio recorded in camera then we are in fact doomed. Humans can't even fix the simple stuff (well, if you hired a good sound editor this wouldn't be an issue but you didn't) and so... they will rely on AI instead because it's cheaper and you had no intentions of paying anyone to do the work properly anyway. Walk the walk or get out the room. Lame.

      Nope.
It can't play my guitar at my St Paddy's Day gig, my wedding gig, my concert, my coffee house show.
It can't read my audience. It can't see what I see my audience doing on a given day or night.
No need to stress about this if you keep working on your game - playing, singing, improvising.
If you find a way to let it help you - more power to you.
The tech world has people striving to make you dependent on them.
      Blah blah blah

I am shocked to see ASCAP supporting the wholesale theft of creative works. AI doesn't work without theft. Period.
