- From Wikipedia:
Following Yes's 1987--88 tour to support the Big Generator album, singer Jon Anderson left the band and formed a new group with 1970s-era Yes members Steve Howe (guitars), Rick Wakeman (keyboards) and Bill Bruford (drums). As their new band Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, the quartet released a self-titled album and went on tour.
Meanwhile, the remaining members of the "official" Yes, guitarist Trevor Rabin, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White and keyboardist Tony Kaye, continued work on a follow-up to Big Generator. Among the songs recorded was the Rabin- and Squire-penned "Lift Me Up", the lyrics of which allude to homelessness:
Lyrically, the verse was a little dark, we tried to make it somewhat vague as to what it was about, but one of the pictures is that it's a homeless person... 'Look around, I've got nowhere to stay... you look me up, you look me down' the guy who goes into the restaurant to use the bathroom and they look at him, 'No you can't come in here.' And he just looks to the sky [and says], 'Lift me up and turn me over,' you know, help me out. -Trevor Rabin, Yesstories: Yes in their own words by Tim Morse
The two competing bands had fought for the rights to use the "Yes" name, with the Squire/Rabin/White/Kaye faction filing suit to prevent Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe from using the name "Yes" during their tour promotion. However, once both factions were signed to Arista Records, the record label decided to combine the musicians' efforts and produce an album, Union, featuring songs from each group. "Lift Me Up" was one of four Rabin or Squire songs included on the album; its follow-up single, "Saving My Heart", was another.
Chart performance
"Lift Me Up" was Yes's third (and as of 2010, last) single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, following 1983's "Owner of a Lonely Heart" from 90125 and 1987's "Love Will Find a Way" from Big Generator. "Lift Me Up" spent six weeks at the number one spot, from May 4 to June 8, 1991. It also charted on the Billboard's Hot 100 chart, where it reached number 86
Lyrics:
Look around - Got no place to stay.
God I hate this town, depending on the day.
You lift me up, you lift me down - Alright, OK.
While I got no life, I got no hope;
I'm falling in love.
Help me through the fight;
Help me with tonight - I'm calling.
What to do I find it hard to know;
The road I walk is not the one I chose...
Lift me up and turn me over;
Lead me on into the dawn.
Take me to the highest mountain;
Tie me up, love it is strong.
Have you decided on my fortune?
Facing the future in your eyes,
With your imperial behaviour
We've finally reached the battle cries.
Open doors - They may be closed to me;
The fire's still burning in my heart...
What to do I find it hard to know;
I want to turn my life around...
I was parking my car at 2 am when I first heard this song.
It went through my bones.
25 yrs later,, it still does.
RIP Chris Squire....... one of the best bass players of all time...... Sir, you are lifted up today... May God welcome you into paradise.
HALLELUYAH!
I was immediately blown away when I heard this masterpiece long ago. I never recovered....
Truly a masterpiece
Look around - Got no place to stay.
God I hate this town, depending on the day.
You look me up, you look me down - Alright, OK.
While I got no life, I got no hope;
I'm falling in love.
Help me through the fight;
Help me win tonight - I'm calling.
What to do I find it hard to know;
The road I walk is not the one I chose
Lift me up and turn me over;
Lead me on into the dawn.
Take me to the highest mountain;
Tie me up, love in a storm.
Have you decided on my fortune?
Facing the future in your eyes,
With your imperial behaviour
We fight amidst the battle cries.
Open doors - They may be closed to me;
The fire's still burning in my heart...
What to do I find it hard to know;
I want to turn my life around...
Pure artistry, pure precision.
Magnificent.
YES !
I hope my son will someday understand the massive significance Trevor Rabin's music had on all of us, and what an honor it is to carry this man's namesake.
true
+Dana Edwards another Edwards!!
+Dana Edwards Better yet, Howe, Anderson, Wakeman, and Bruford. The original and ONLY Yes.
+Frankincensed Actually, Peter Banks and Tony Kaye preceded both Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman...plus, Chris Squire was the only constant in Yes' 22 album tenure, having appeared on every album. No other Yes member can boast that...Rest In Peace Chris Squire!
Yes, I am curious on this comment as well.
Yes has always included Christ in their music. The fact that He has more music devoted to Him that any and all is a fact this group understands. Jon and other members of Yes love Him, and recognizing this in the music they play makes sense. May I remind you, Yes is a choice, as is recognition and action towards the Lord...and I've never seen a reason to listen much to those who scoff either. Listening to Yes opens doors to the facts that the Lord is. So lift yourself up and continue searching.
Christ is included in their music, but moreover a general understanding and insight of a higher consciousness in general, as opposed to a clandestine oligarchy and agendas to control, rather than doing EVERYTHING directly from the heart, and thus finding ease in synchronicity in the world
How profound. I felt this of them also… sometimes their music seems to be speaking to me…
Having seen Yes 36 times, it was always a spiritual. 🙏🍁
Jon Anderson is actually a strong born-again Christian like myself i saw many interviews with him he even sung on the godpel band 4 Him"s songs @lesblatnyak5947
Ah! Someone else is listening!
What a beautiful prayer. Next, try VNV Nation "Nova".
Love this vibe so much. So positive.
Once I grabbed my wife at the 2:00 mark and we held each other and danced in circles. It brought tears to her eyes. Loved it!! beautiful moment. Go for it.
Awesome
Beautiful 🙏🍁
This is one example of how disco and other forms of music took over. If this song had been released in the 70's, it would have been regarded as one of the greatest rock songs ever. Instead, it lies in oblivion and is on virtually no radio playlists. A total pity.
No seventies it wasn't unusual for FM rock radio stations to play deep cuts I know I was usually pleasantly surprised to hear deeper cuts from different groups now now I can't turn on the classic rock station or not almost throw up from the repetitive playing of the top 40 500 times a day everyday and makes me sick argenti go back to the day when the DJ could select a song and play it on the radio instead of the corporate assholes playing a tough 4600 times a day every day it's sickening and I won't even listen to classic rock stations anymore because they play the same songs every day 7 days a week I mean after you've heard a song so many times it's time to stop playing the song and try something different insanity is repeating the same mistakes and I hoping for a different outcome play some new songs on our radio stations please and stop thinking about the almighty dollar because you're actually losing money nobody wants to hear the same f****** songs every f******gay try something different Pleasant and surprise us please
Classic rock stations are all corporate media they don't play Real Rock
It's just the top 40 over and over and over again he never hearing deep Cuts anymore corporate media taking over
Goes for many of the other Trevor Rabin song also. Some of the very best rock songs ever laid down. There's something wrong with anybody that needs to attach any negative narrative to him or his songs. Their loss. Oh well
Lift me up Jesus !
I was lucky to see Jon Anderson last year, alone... he still has the voice of an angel. Loved the entire band since about 4-5 years old and I went to the 35th Anniversary tour...If they can keep blowing it up I'll keep going!
trevor rabin...what an awesome musician.
Yes. Magnificent
One of Yes' most moving songs. It also grabbed me on first hearing. Definitely the highlight of "Union".
Spiritual
I listened to 'Hold On'.. then 'Lift Me Up'.. what a 'pair', my heaven..!
8 great musicians putting aside their giant egos to make great songs for us. Bravo!
I had completely forgotten about this song over the last 20 years or so. Glad I rediscovered it.
RIP Chris Squire...I wanted to post something to FB that he wrote, and I didn't realize that this, one of my all time favorite Yes compositions that I would blast out of my car stereo, was written by him. Great work, great music, left us a great legacy. All musicians worth their salt need to get into the amazing prog rock of Yes
This song gives me goose bumps. To say they put on a fantastic concert, is a gross unerstatement.
This song is one of Yes' best. It completely turned my day around....in a great way, of course!
It doesn't get any better then this ! what an awesome song with an awesome meaning
Trevor rabin is. In my opinion. One of the most. Incredible and best . Vocalist and guitar. Genius. And song writers of the 20th century. Its as if. Theres really no where to keep him meaning one place. Or one band or type of musicwould be a crime from film scores to yes hes a true musician
My favorite Song from Yes, awesome 👍👍👍
I have been to 18 YES concerts. Late 60S and 70s British music had classic education and what came with it is still unbelievable. I'm glad I was young then. Outrageous awesome
This song really does almost bring together all the parts of Yes's history into one uniform perfect gem of a song. You hear little blips here and there of this album, that song, and son. Yes, it's a Rabin masterpiece, but you can hear Howe's trademark guitar and lap steel in parts, you can hear Chris singing his perfect lower harmonies, you can hear Jon's boyish yells, and so on.
Howe isn't on this song, although I thought he was, too, at first, especially in the intro. But the YesWest material on "Union" was recorded in entirely different sessions then the rest of the album, which started out as ABWH's 2nd album. The only real link between the two groups of songs is Jon Anderson's voice.
Actually Steve didn't even play the guitar on Union. Trevor did all of YesWest's guitar work, but some other guy did Steve's parts. When I remember his name I will edit it in.
It's Jimmy Haun. They left a few of his parts in, but yeah, Haun replaced most of the rest. 3 songs have absolutely no Howe at all. "Masquerade", of course, is all Howe.
@@trfesok haun had to get the record out to meet the deadline. Wakeman and howe were not available. He had no choice but to get similar replacements. The album is actually pretty good. Some classics, some good songs and some filler.
Indeed!
Love it when Chris Squire has that thick sound going on. And Alan White's got a nice, deep pocket on this tune. Great footwork throughout and then, during the chorus, the delicate touch on the ride cymbal works so well against the punchier rhythms happening at the same time.
This is one well-crafted tune!
And even when their lyrics can be easily absorbed, they still find a way to leave a cool message.
"God I hate this town, depending on the day."
This song ALWAYS puts me in a good mood! Calms me right down. Never fails. One of my absolute favorite songs from Yes. I wish I wrote it! ;)
Im a Rush Fan but this beautiful song competes with every Rush Song..Again RUSH is for me..
Lift me up Jesus !!!
Not to be mordid. Sorry to be morbid. When I die, someday...I want this song played at my funeral. Live. All my musican friends, plus the church organist, plus a full choir. Can be entrance music, or exit. Don't care either way (I'll be dead).
I'm curious Turkels..you left this 4 years ago. Do you still feel the same way? I bet you don't.
@@43Aquaman You're probably right. There are better songs. This is too grandiose. And a little gay, too.
Thanks for a great YES history lesson. Thanks for posting this fantastic tune.
What a great song!
Some of the accompanying images on this video are great!
I agree
5:09- 5:51 perfect solo. Punching to the front while staying with the rest.
I always loved this song as well as the Union album So sad to hear of Allen white's passing Beautiful video God-bless The band Crew and many Fans of yes around the globe
percussionists this is how its done👊💯🥁🥁
some of Rabins best guitar work💯👍
Miss you Chris
Reminded me of graduation from college. Came out about 1 month prior to getting my diploma. Just nothing but good feelings when I hear this song. Can't believe it has been 21 years ago.
Look around
Got no place to stay
God I hate this town, depending on the day
You lift me up, you lift me down
Alright, okay
While I got no life, I got no hope
I'm falling in love
Help me through the fight
Help me with tonight
I'm calling
What to do I find it hard to know
Lord, the walk is not the one I chose
Lift me up and turn me over
Lead me on into the dawn
Take me to the highest mountain
Tie me up, love in a storm
Have you decided on my fortune?
Facing the future in your eyes
With your imperial behavior
We fight amidst the battle cries
Open doors
They may be closed to me
The fire's still burning in my heart
What to do I find it hard to know
I want to turn my life around
By the way, that still shot of Jesus (at 3:05) wearing the crown of thorns was taken from the documentary film, "Jesus of Nazareth" with Robert Powell as Jesus. I believe it's the scene where he's standing with Pilate before the crowd. Wow! Very fitting! Very profound! It gets me choked up nearly everytime! Well done!!
The most underrated rock anthem of all time, bar none.
Most definitely.....
I don't know what it means to anybody else for the signifies adopt paid for my eternal salvation
I agree, with no hesitation...
Agreed!! So much LOVE in this song, Pure genius!
this road i walk is not the one i chose, i want to turn my life around
I Craved the return of THIS interpretation!!!!!!!!
I like the Lift me up feeling.
Who is lifting me up?
IDK who I am asking.
I will ask God
I know when I ask God to lift me up, I have to lift myself up.
I prefer that anyway.
Faith has no value if you don't have faith in faith and yourself.
It only reached 86? That seems odd considering how many times I heard this played. Oh, wait... that's because my brother had this CD and kept hitting "repeat". Still, this song reminds me off summertime and going up to my auntie's cottage...
Yes was the total package. They can do long complicated masterpieces. In the 80s they adapted and wrote more radio friendly shorter classics. They rock when needed. They do tender ballads with the voice of Jon. I lost interest after Union when the heart of the band left. Their live shows were top level.
Whenever I listen to this song I hear a general understanding and insight of a higher consciousness, in stark contrast to a clandestine oligarchy and agendas to control, rather than doing EVERYTHING directly from the heart, and thus finding ease in synchronicity in the world
GREAT sound quality for an awesome song!
Listening to this song always Lifts me up.
86 on one of BB's charts. From the wiki page:
"Lift Me Up" was Yes's third (and as of 2010, last) single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, following 1983's "Owner of a Lonely Heart" from 90125 and 1987's "Love Will Find a Way" from Big Generator.[3] "Lift Me Up" spent six weeks at the number one spot, from May 4 to June 8, 1991.[4] It also charted on the Billboard's Hot 100 chart, where it reached number 86.[3]
Great tune.
Anderson, Rabin, Squire, Kaye, White My favourite line up
Talk is an amazing album, the best of the Rabin era imho (90125, Big Gen, Union, Talk).
TYVM David.
All time fave by this band 3
I cannot help myself in loving that which I imagine. But there is no discernible cause to the totality of the love attached to its object: mere evidence of an a-causal connecting principle. The issue with finding this in the world is that this principle underlying our existence is not of our being, but of that of the Demiurge - the creator of the physical world. Nevertheless, as we are relatives - distant in some ways, when we stumble across this a-causal connecting principle we identify with it - are afraid and drawn to it at the same time. Synchronicity is mysterious, mystical, and yet as mundane as falling in and out of love with the same painting on the wall.
Great tune and very nice inspirational lyrics when the two Yes factions consolidated in the '90's and came up with this recording...song and music by guitarist Trevor Rabin and bassist Chris Squire
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2AM, and 25 years ago? There are some people I know who clearly could not say that. To be sober enough in the wee-hours of the morning just wasn't there! When I got the CD, one night I must have played this tune a good dozen times before I headed into the house...uh, yeah, sober.
50 eh? I always knew they were all great musicians, but I could never get past that high falsetto voice. If your the guy making these videos, Congratulations, and thanks.
Superb work - Yes tunes deserve this deep contemplative graphical rendering!
Absolutely beautiful, thanks man , you have made my world a bit nicer with this x class x
RIP Chris Squire.
i love yes!!!
Dana you are a good soul and so wise.
Look at that ONLY one set of foot prints WHERE WERE YOU!!.... carrying you

Lifting up Kylie."Prayers For Kylie,God's Little Warrior"on FB.
thank you vzqk50a, great sound on your upload
Saw all those ABWH & Union tours ....awkward!!!!! Tony Levin...Awesome!!!!
I love YES!
Going in 2 weeks....can't wait!
The beginning reminded me of KC and the Sunshine Band.
Those in control outlaw the homeless, it's even illegal to feed them in a park... we give birdseed to pigeons, why can't we lend a hand to our fellow man? Or shelter those unfortunate souls on your own land?
Feeling... like disappearing...
like an innocent homeless soul
There's a half million homeless people in America On Any Given night sleeping outside
Im homeless again as of last week. My back was injured working and got tossed like trash. Living in my truck in goodwill parkinglot engine has to come out to fix 80 dollar part it has one killer stereo and i have tears of joy streaming right now. My church will let me use bus shop to do it as soon as back heals. Awesome video. By the way 25% of homeless people will steal the bark off a tree. You just dont know which ones
@@mikegrant9441 Wherever you go, there you are: You never really know, friend or foe, not everyone in the parking lot is your friend. Long may you live & love & trust truly any one ~ pray it be returned. In the end we learn, joy & sadness, peace ~ or discontent. Difficult to navigate these disconnected paradigms, especially as they intersect in these times.
Yes, is like going to church, spiritual nourishment. I pray you get all you need, and need all you get. Stay safe & sane & hopefully never forget you sweet soul.
Can you not file worker's comp, maybe the church resources, an address or a friends?
This machine is so broken.
you copied that from someone else
I like this song and I have the cassette tape album
From the album/cd "Union" (1991)
what a fuckin song
Out staning in the field
IS YES STILL OUT THERE WAS WONDERING?
R.i.p Chris squire
Yes, indeed.
Boli to Squire, Kaye, White ,Rabin a Anderson, Bruford, Howe a Wakeman. Autormi piesne boli Trevor Rabin a Chris Squire.Pieseň nahrala v The Jacaranda Room v Los Angeles zostava Anderson, Rabin, Squire, Kaye a White.Niektoré skladby ako I Would Have Waited Forever, Shock To The System, Silent Talking, Dangerous Holding On Evensong a Take The Wazter To The Mountain nahrala zostava Anderson, Briford, Wakeman a Howe, pričom basovú gitaru nahral Tony Levine.V komentároch často spomínaný Jimmy Haun hral na gitare len v skladbe Dangerous. Autormi niektorých skladieb boli Tony Levine a Bill Bruford Evensong, Chris Squire a Billy Sherwood The More We Live-Let Go, Steve Howe Masguarade alebo Trevor Rabin Saving My Heart..
Rabin put a complete twist on Yes's sound. Still great but in a different way.
LIFT. You UP Your Life. GO To THE Church On Sunday Morning ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤😂❤❤
I think it is a political song………...
"Facing the future in your eyes,
With your imperial behaviour
We've finally reached the battle cries."
If you think thru the lyrics, it works……
Love the harmonics in the song, regardless of the message.
Wrong
best progressive Rock song ever imho
Una Oracion a Dios
Trevor Rabin almost killed YES with 90125 but revived them with Big Generator. Haven't enjoyed a full album from them since.
Take me back to the 70s!
Trevor Rabin didn't kill Yes, he took them to a new level. Yes had to somehow survive through the ever-changing musical scene, especially in the 80's when music became more and more radio-oriented. This was the case with many other bands from the 60's and 70's that continued through the 80's and 90's. Trevor wrote a new chapter in the Yes story that actually worked very well and produced some very well crafted songs during his tenure.
I didn't say that Trevor Rabin killed YES. Read my post again. The only yes song you ever hear on the radio anymore is owner of a lonely heart. I thought the drama album was better then anything Trevor Rabin did. That being said give me tales from topographic oceans or close to the edge any day. Even though yes wasn't a top 40 band most of their albums still want gold or platinum. They really didn't need the radio which is ironic as the first song on mtv was the Buggles video killed the radio star which was sung by Trevor Horn who sang lead on the YES drama album.
90125 is an absolute masterpiece of musical artistry and music and recording technology. I am a huge 70's Yes fan too.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
~YES~On~Fire~
all musics are so amazing and very matches to each stages scenes ! Never get tired to listen those cool musics ! I have a question about what is the name of music of last individual time trial ? Do you know if you watched that show ?
thru like a train light ha ha happened to me too
the 8 configurations of Yes...
Lift me up...
Let us know how the show is. Now that they've changed the lead vocalist AGAIN, I have my doubts. Have they turned into a tribute band that just happens to have 2 (or 3, if you count White) members of the classic lineup?
Filmed in Los Angeles?
No offense, but there are some mistakes in the lyrics posted in your info section. They are as follows:
“You lift me up, you lift me down” is incorrect. The correct lyrics are “You look me up, you look me down.”
“I’ve got no hope OF falling in love” is the correct lyric there. Not “I’m falling in love.”
“Lord the walk …” is wrong. It should be “The road I walk ….”
“Open doors - They may be closed to me” is wrong. It should be “Open doors that may be closed to me.”
Just FYI.
A bit of a Scottish touch to this.Defenatly the drums, could use a little bagpipes.
why blue/u never Been to one of their shows huh
Could have done without the bleeding jesus, but great song
+Eric Morrison lol
+Eric Morrison Christian hater
Agreed -- Yes music transcends traditional religion. From TeamRock.com interview with Jon: "What is your current belief system?
It doesn’t matter what path you follow, it all comes back to the fact that what should matter is what’s in your heart and soul.
How do you view traditional religions?
For me all religions are following the same god. It’s very narrow-minded to feel that your religion is the only true one.
Is there a God?
There is, yes. God is everything. It’s up to us to try to connect with who he is."
You already have done without the bleeding Jesus fact is if it is already been made too late now
It’s fantastic....but I say skip that first minute intro....
Jon is too sick to do the extended touring that Squire, Howe and White want to continue. That was the bottom line.
You're saying the car went through your bones, right? That must have been some awful park job. BTW 25 years later..? This came out 1991 which according to my math...
