Aye, I'm watching it all again. I chickened out summer of 2020 due to virus spread (plus Canada was smart enough to stop all tourism), but 2021 I have hopes... Your vids are the best for motivation! Thanks again!
Thanks a lot and glad you like it. The random act of kindness from strangers always amazed me on this tour and getting a replacement Seat Post to get to the next bike shop just blew me away!
Very good video. I know how much time it takes to put together short clips from all the footage you took. A good blend of photos, video, texts and talking. I plan to do my 4th TDR in 2022.
Rick Ashton thanks very much Rick. Well done for doing it 3 times and planning the 4th! I’d do the TDR tomorrow again if I could get the time off it surely is an incredible experience!
Very nicely put together video. Some words for the algorithm - this video has: nature - wildlife - traveling - touring - dump trucks - scenery - bikepacking - safty tips - informative - relaxing - fun.
Great video! rode from Banff to Cranbrook just a few days before you. I didn't see any bears though I saw some fresh tracks on the BC side, not too far from Elk Pass. Cheers.
Decent Diversions thanks a lot Man, just checked out your videos from your trip too, very enjoyable and well done! I like your sleeping set-up especially the see-through shelter, great idea😀
Thanks Bart…I don’t think we can avoid Bears but Bears avoid us humans😅 other than that all you can do is take necessary precautions and follow the recommended codes of behaviors.
That Lefty fork seems like form over function. It's clearly working, but I don't think I could trust it. Do you notice any enhancements to your ride with the Lefty?
Hi David, I’m riding with lefty’s since they came out and, touch wood, so far never had an issue. I agree it’s form over function and if you intend to buy a bike specifically for bike packing it may not be your most practical choice as you only have one fork to mount items onto and spare parts maybe hard to get in some places. There was no extra negative or positive for me riding with the Lefty but would I do it again with the same bike....hell yeah!😁
Hi Paddy, I'm thinking of doing Jasper to Banff this summer, I've been getting the impression the route might be all paved??? Judging from your videos - it doesn't look like any pavement, but perhaps you just left those boring parts out? could you give me some insight into the road surfaces along that route?
Hi Karen, I followed the Great Divide route from ACA and apart from a paved section between Jasper and Hinton and Waiparous Village to Canmore most of the rest is on forestry roads and some single track. Maybe you’d consider the Icefields Pkwy route 93 which I think is all on paved road.
Fantastic video Paddy, one of the best i've watched on the GDMBR. I'm researching the route at the moment and planning to do it starting july 2019. I'm in the UK and would like to make contact[somehow] if it is ok to try to pick up a few more details about you trip. Thanks, Martin
Nice one Paddy, that brought back some good memories, I've got to get out there and finish it off, it didn't quite work out for me the first time round! Awesome trip though.
Hi John, they were in the camp all night, well I’ve seen them when I eventually went into the tent and they were still in the area in the morning. I guess they were looking for leftovers from fellow campers who must have all left prior to my arrival due to the bad weather.
@@paddyrast8741 Thank you Paddy for the reply. I am interested in bear behaviour, as I've had a few encounters myself. Stalking is very rare and not typical behaviour for a bear. I don't think the bears were stalking you, they usually have better things to do. Like you, I prefer not to see them or come across them in the wild. I enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the great work. John
George Wilkens cycle cycle and cycle more these were my main preparation! Spend as much time on the bike as possible after work and on weekends and pack the gear on it to make sure everything fits and works and get used to the saddle, sitting on it for a longer time period😁
Very well done and thanks for putting this together. I am hoping to go from Banff to Japser this summer. I usually use a hammock and looks like that shouldn't be a problem or would you recommend a tent?
Thanks a lot Paul. I wouldn’t think it’s a problem using a hammock, plenty of trees around but then I’ve never used one so I wouldn’t be too sure what to look out for🤔
What bike model is this? Did you have any problems with the bike and would you recommend it and use it again for this ride? Great videos. Thanks for sharing your trip!
Hi Gary, thanks a lot! It’s a Cannondale Beast of the East with +tires and yes I would recommend and use again. It was very reliable no issues not even a flat tyre! The broken seat-post I had was unfortunately a cheap carbon copy I bought on ebay...you live and learn🤔 😀
Great video.....I think this is one of the best that I've come across on the GDMBR. Looks like your ran into several bear on this first segment. What areas did you see bear? How many? Any issues with them or did they pretty much ignore you? Thanks for sharing you trip - very impressive.
Tim H thanks a lot Tim, yeah run it a few Bears and the first encounter was the scariest as one of them was very close and seem to be interested and sniffing the air. That was in the camp site, totally empty after bad weather and Canada day. Thankfully i was able to stay calm and my loud talk seems to have helped to shy them away😅 I’ve only seen bears in Canada, once I crossed the border into the US I dint see any. People were always very helpful and would have stopped and warned me if they’d seen a Bear. On one occasion I got a lift as a mother with pups was just spotted up the track.
Mitchel Hoffart thanks for watching Mitchel, I never did consider that as I believe you would have to start earlier which I couldn’t but if I ever get the opportunity to ride it again I would do that just to see it from the other side 😀
Hey Paddy, loved the video! Indeed, it takes a huge amount of time to record and sort all the shot angles you used. I'm too lazy, or tired, so Bravo! Did you have a drone with you? Guess I didn't see it during brief days we rode together. Looking forward to the next installments. Cheers, Allan
Are your glasses prescription? Are the lenses interchangeable, clear to shaded? If so could you tell what make they are. Enjoying watching your videos Thanks
gjswilson hi, yes these are prescription lenses Rydon from Rudy Project. The prescription is an insert and front lenses are interchangeable with many different shades. I sometimes wear them without the shades just the prescription lens. Great to here you like the video Thanks for watching😀
Erwin Santizo it was a first time Bikepacking for me and all I can say is just go for it, don’t overthink, don’t put yourself under time pressure and you’ll enjoy every minute of it 😀
Hi Paddy, Great Video. How many miles a day would you typically do, how many rest days would you have and were you ever stuck for something to eat? Regards Michael in Dublin
Michael Hanahoe Hi Michael, thanks. I did an average of 65 miles a day and had 4 rest days. I was never really stuck but did get hungry especially at the first section between Jasper and Banff as I underestimated the calories burn. After that I was planning better and had no issues with drink and food😋
@@paddyrast8741 Thanks Paddy. Did you have any safety concerns travelling alone in case you broke a bone or fell off your bike and had to go to hospital
Michael Hanahoe I was concerned about the wildlife at the start Michael but not for anything else. I figure the chances of me breaking a bone or ending up in hospital are much bigger by driving to work everyday 😉...but I do recommend to have good insurance cover, just in case!
@@paddyrast8741 thanks paddy. Chances are soneone would be passing by if you had a fall if you went in the busy season. Reckon I'll be bringing an emergency GPS tracker to be safe.
Dean Herde thanks Dean, I suppose it’s a matter of taste and thankfully we are all different individuals. The good thing is that one can turn off the sound😉
Excelent video mate. I really enjoyed it.too many bears though. Thanks. Watching from Chile.

Bears can be found everywhere in B.C., and it depends on whether you encounter a black bear or a grizzly. Read up, lots of material out there.
