International Appalachian Trail - Donegal - 2019
Просмотров 8425 лет назад
I cycled the Donegal section of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT). The Ulster ~Ireland Chapter of the International Appalachian Trail was established in 2011. The trail is in the province of Ulster in Ireland and runs from west Donegal in the Republic of Ireland to Larne, Co. Antrim in Northern Ireland. The route starts at the spectacular Slieve League mountain and passes through the Bl...

Very nice work. Thanks for all the extra effort to record, edit and post these videos. When did you finish in Antelope Wells?
Thanks a lot Chris, I finished in August after 50 days.
Brilliant 👏👍🏼
Inspirational man, how do you avoid bears? They scare me a lot
Thanks Bart…I don’t think we can avoid Bears but Bears avoid us humans😅 other than that all you can do is take necessary precautions and follow the recommended codes of behaviors.
Indeed , nice video. Beautiful pictures. No complaining about how tough it is. Absolute joy.
Thanks a lot Michiel, it was pure joy indeed 😃
Great videos. They inspired me a lot. This route is now on my "bucket list" :-) Thank you!
Thanks Johnny and good luck on the route 🍀
What an adventure. Thanks for posting
great job Paddy. MIght give this a go..
Thanks Grainne…and do give it a go, you won’t regret it 😀 🚴♀️
Don’t need another music video.
Ouch... No one forces you to watch it and there’s always the mute button🤔 Looking forward to see your content!!!
Hi how many days did the trip take you to complete ??
Hi Angus, I’d didn’t race, so it took me 50 very enjoyable days!
@@paddyrast8741 perfect thank you, how did you find the long section between pie town and silver city as there doesn’t seem to be any foods stops on the way ? Trying to get an idea before I set out on the ride next summer
@Angus Cuming I can’t recall it being a problem and I remember staying at a camp site around Lake Robert’s which would have had a shop. I didn’t need it though. At the time I reached that part of the route I got used to carry sufficient food and water. I had problems at the very start in the Canada section where I just didn’t realize how many calories one burns and needs, so that was a lesson learned and from there on I made sure I had sufficient portions on me😋...wish I could do it again this year!
@@paddyrast8741 thank you very much for your advice truly helpful
Absolutely stunning and epic Paddy!
Thanks Turlough, it was a challenging but beautiful experience indeed 😅
That Lefty fork seems like form over function. It's clearly working, but I don't think I could trust it. Do you notice any enhancements to your ride with the Lefty?
Hi David, I’m riding with lefty’s since they came out and, touch wood, so far never had an issue. I agree it’s form over function and if you intend to buy a bike specifically for bike packing it may not be your most practical choice as you only have one fork to mount items onto and spare parts maybe hard to get in some places. There was no extra negative or positive for me riding with the Lefty but would I do it again with the same bike....hell yeah!😁
Great video - thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
What bike model is this? Did you have any problems with the bike and would you recommend it and use it again for this ride? Great videos. Thanks for sharing your trip!
Hi Gary, thanks a lot! It’s a Cannondale Beast of the East with +tires and yes I would recommend and use again. It was very reliable no issues not even a flat tyre! The broken seat-post I had was unfortunately a cheap carbon copy I bought on ebay...you live and learn🤔 😀
I really love your biking videos. The scenes and moments you capture are stunning and it's amazing to get a little glimpse into these amazing bike adventures. Thanks so much for taking the time to create/share!
Thanks a million Alex, glad you enjoy it and with comments like that it is worth the effort 😃
Great adventure! how did you navigate?
Thanks! I used Garmin 1030 and good old Paper Maps from ACA!
World is full of gorgeous beautiful Country 💯🇺🇸🙏
Great tip very enjoyable
Thanks very much Gary!
Stunning
God’s Country
love the video and glad you got the seat post thing sorted out. Great video. Really appreciate you posting it.
Thanks a lot and glad you like it. The random act of kindness from strangers always amazed me on this tour and getting a replacement Seat Post to get to the next bike shop just blew me away!
You have a very nice channel here , just awesome content and beautiful footages, Do you live around Donegal ? Just great location there. Thanks for sharing. Like 5. Have a great day, see you soon again
Thanks a lot and thanks for watching!, yes based in Donegal!
Aye, I'm watching it all again. I chickened out summer of 2020 due to virus spread (plus Canada was smart enough to stop all tourism), but 2021 I have hopes... Your vids are the best for motivation! Thanks again!
Aw thanks Mike and stay motivated! Wise move to postpone it, hopefully we get some kind of normality back in 21!
Waoww! Nice pics, nice cows, nice ride, nice cows, nice cut, no blahblah, nice cows, nice music, and a lot of nice cows! Thank you for not explain us in a long selfie that this race is sooo difficult, sooo much climbing blahblahblah etc. because with the 1000 km/30’000 m announced, everybody knows this is not a Sunday afternoon training ride. Therefore, I think this is the best film I saw about such kind of race by far. Thank you!
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video....and the cows🤗
6:30 that is some good piloting. An uncommon shot from most biking vids.
Thanks, I wish I could say it’s my skills, it ain’t easy to cycle and fly this thing but somehow I managed without crashing😅
Do you like the Ortlieb saddle bag? Does it sway?
Yes I did like it a lot but I have nothing else to compare it with as it is the one and only I ever used. It does sway a bit but not to a level that would have annoyed me. I think all these Bags sway to a certain extend unless they’re fixed to some sort of a frame.
Good story, well chosen music. But the shaky footage won't let you win an oscar :-) Nevertheless, enjoyed the videos a lot.
Ha thanks a lot and thanks for watching! Shaky videos is the latest trend to get you to the Oscars 😅....or maybe not!
Brilliant vids Paddy. What an amazing journey you did there.
Thank you 🤗
Excelent video mate. I really enjoyed it.too many bears though. Thanks. Watching from Chile.
Thanks a lot for watching and your comment, glad you enjoyed it 😀
👍👍👍👍
Hi there. Fab videos. Would love to talk to you about the logistics of doing this in the future. I am living in kerry ireland
Hi Fearghal, thanks a lot and yes we can talk any time, I’m in Donegal
Thanks for sharing this - watching it while on zwift dreaming of Switzerland. I’ve been to wengen and Gstaad a lot nice to see those areas in part of your video. Also lovely camera work on the trials, really give you an overview of what to expect on the event. Heres hoping I’m on the start line next year. Super nice bike 👍
Thank you very much Imran and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I hope you’ll get to the start line as well, it’s an amazing but tough race but the scenery is well worth every minute of it! Keep riding 🚲🚲🚲
👍👍
Paddy, just found your ride. Great job. I did Mexico to Canada in 2018 so I'm sure we passed each other. Thanks for the memories. Russ
Thanks Russ, I’m sure our paths did cross,
Hello great video, in how many days did you drive the route, at the end of the route are there trains or buses to any part of Switzerland or Italy? Thank you
Mansur ginory thanks Mansur, I finished in 8 days and 4h. There is great public transport availability in Switzerland and the train station in Montreux is within walking / cycling distance of the finishing line. From there you can get anywhere in Switzerland and I’m sure to places across the border to Italy too. Best is to check the national train webpage for timetables and bookings www. Sbb.ch
120km for days, good job, thanks
Paddy, thank you for making the video. Why did you think the bears were stalking you at camp? John
Hi John, they were in the camp all night, well I’ve seen them when I eventually went into the tent and they were still in the area in the morning. I guess they were looking for leftovers from fellow campers who must have all left prior to my arrival due to the bad weather.
@@paddyrast8741 Thank you Paddy for the reply. I am interested in bear behaviour, as I've had a few encounters myself. Stalking is very rare and not typical behaviour for a bear. I don't think the bears were stalking you, they usually have better things to do. Like you, I prefer not to see them or come across them in the wild. I enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the great work. John
Hi Paddy, I'm thinking of doing Jasper to Banff this summer, I've been getting the impression the route might be all paved??? Judging from your videos - it doesn't look like any pavement, but perhaps you just left those boring parts out? could you give me some insight into the road surfaces along that route?
what route did you take?
Hi Karen, I followed the Great Divide route from ACA and apart from a paved section between Jasper and Hinton and Waiparous Village to Canmore most of the rest is on forestry roads and some single track. Maybe you’d consider the Icefields Pkwy route 93 which I think is all on paved road.
@@paddyrast8741 Thanks for your quick response! I want to avoid pavement as much as possible :)
Wonderful videos! How did you manage to have enough batteries to record all the footage? Did you have a dynamo on your bike? Extra batteries? I plan on cycling the great divide in 2022 or 23 🤞
Thanks a lot. I carried a 20,000mAh Power Bank which was sufficient. I would have loved a Dynamo but there are non-available for a lefty fork. I hope you get to do the divide and best of luck with the planning
Very nicely put together video. Some words for the algorithm - this video has: nature - wildlife - traveling - touring - dump trucks - scenery - bikepacking - safty tips - informative - relaxing - fun.
Hey, thanks a lot and I will use the advice for the Algorithm!
Great video footage but the music is mostly awful especially at the start.
Dean Herde thanks Dean, I suppose it’s a matter of taste and thankfully we are all different individuals. The good thing is that one can turn off the sound😉
Paddy Rast that’s true mate. Great video nonetheless and awesome effort.
We must have been on the trail just days apart! I caught up with Ed (the one with the deer in your earlier video) and Bo just outside of Pie Town and raced with Ed for a while. We all stayed in the Toaster House and I pushed on a bit further the next day. Great videos! It was bloody hot wasn't it! We don't get weather like that in Wales too often....
ben williams thanks Ben, you must have seen my tracks😀 I left the gang and Ed in Ovando as I wanted to push on. Great guy and I really enjoyed cycling with him. It was hot alright but I really enjoyed it, I hardly had any rain the whole route, so unlike what we get on these islands 🌧🌧🌧
During the singletrack footage in the last 2 or 3 mins I was expecting a bear around every corner!
So did I 😅
@@paddyrast8741 hello paddy. Fellow donegal man here planning to do the cycle June 2022. Any way to contact you?
@@timmyjimmy949 sure, send me a mail on patrec14@gmail.com
Great ride. Thanks for putting in the time for production and not just having a helmet mounted view with the chain clanking the frame the entire time. I hope to do the ride in 2021.
Black Dog Adventures thanks a lot, much appreciated and I hope you will get to do the ride in 2021, well worth to put pursue😀
Looks great Paddy, the chicken wings got a work out 😀
Green Grass haha thanks Dan, they did indeed get a good shake😀
One day I will get to visit the land where my family came from, till then I will enjoy it from afar. Once again an excellent video and as before, can't wait to see what you do next.
2Wheels4Life thanks a lot and yes one day you’ll have to visit your country of origin 😀
Hi Paddy, Great Video. How many miles a day would you typically do, how many rest days would you have and were you ever stuck for something to eat? Regards Michael in Dublin
Michael Hanahoe Hi Michael, thanks. I did an average of 65 miles a day and had 4 rest days. I was never really stuck but did get hungry especially at the first section between Jasper and Banff as I underestimated the calories burn. After that I was planning better and had no issues with drink and food😋
@@paddyrast8741 Thanks Paddy. Did you have any safety concerns travelling alone in case you broke a bone or fell off your bike and had to go to hospital
Michael Hanahoe I was concerned about the wildlife at the start Michael but not for anything else. I figure the chances of me breaking a bone or ending up in hospital are much bigger by driving to work everyday 😉...but I do recommend to have good insurance cover, just in case!
@@paddyrast8741 thanks paddy. Chances are soneone would be passing by if you had a fall if you went in the busy season. Reckon I'll be bringing an emergency GPS tracker to be safe.
Michael Hanahoe Yes Michael definitely bring a GPS tracker, I had a Spot which gave me that sense of security in case of emergencies.
Great video! rode from Banff to Cranbrook just a few days before you. I didn't see any bears though I saw some fresh tracks on the BC side, not too far from Elk Pass. Cheers.
Decent Diversions thanks a lot Man, just checked out your videos from your trip too, very enjoyable and well done! I like your sleeping set-up especially the see-through shelter, great idea😀
@@paddyrast8741 Thanks! It was cheap and pretty easy to make. I used a rectangular version for my adventures this year.
How many days and how many miles per day please.
Robert Botta 50 days averaging 62 miles a day
Paddy Rast thank you. Epic video and I have seen them all. Remarkable.
Robert Botta thanks very much Robert
Really well done. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Robert🤗
That is just awesome. I came across this series after I heard about this bike path. What an amazing accomplishment. My list is getting too long of things I need to do!
