Using hot hide glue

- Dan Erlewine loves hide glue. It dries hard like crystal -- that's great for transferring tone. It can be reheated and repositioned, too. Amazing stuff!

For anyone else that struggled to find a double boiler or heated glue pot at a reasonable price I've been using a jar to mix up the glue in and standing it on a USB coffee cup warmer which holds a around 50-60 degrees C and seems to do a great job.
Thank you I was just wondering about that. I have old Gibson 12 string acoustic a friend,? Played with Roger Mcguin he waS told he could tune to regular E so no capo, well he put it back in case but didn't define, needless to say, bridge pulled hard cracked the top and backing plate pulled down without breaking! Nobody will touch it, I was told because of framework inside! Do you think if I use hot glue and inject it inside and clamp back up will it hold ?? I can't get in to clean anything out?? Thank you !!
I made a batch in May of 2016. Today is Nov 25/16 and my batch is still good and i have used it probably 10 times since then. The way I preserve it is to use a canning procedure. I heat up the glue, use it and then dip the lid in the hot water and put it on the jar and tighten it. Next the tightened can goes in the fridge. When it cools the canning jar lid is sucked down and the glue is basically canned. I have read all kinds of material that says hot hide glue only lasts a few weeks. Mine would last a year and it smells the same as when it was just made.
Thanks, Dan. You always teach me something new. I appreciate it.
I have always wanted to use my grandfathers old cast iron glue pot, now I will, Thanks!
These videos are fantastic guys. Please keep them coming. The techniques are really applicable, and I like getting a sneak peek into Dan's shop.
@donuntboy25 Yes, but you probably shouldn't do it if you've never used hide glue before. It has very short open time, less than a minute. You can warm up the pieces prior to gluing to extend open time a bit, but even then, a couple of minute at best in an ideal condition. You have to be able to set, align and clamp before hide glue gels within a minute or so.
You can also add urea to extend the open time. It's very cheap. Add 1/2 teaspoon to 1/4 cup of glue.

By adding 10% salt to the hide glue mix, the gelling point is lowered 10 degrees for a little extra clamp time. I only use this method when I know I'm going to glue something that may be tricky to clamp quickly.
Hide glue makes a big difference imo. Not only because it transfers energy better, but because the joints need to be more precise
this is so cool
That is a old school glue, Many years ago,my father used it in his work with furniture. and I remember sold in hardware by ounces or pounds
You don't want to put it in a microwave. Use a double boiler and do not do it in the house because when heated it smells like a dead cow. Thrift store should have a double boiler and a simple thermometer can be found in many stores. Remember: It smells bad!
Many thanks. Great video.
stuff smells HORRIBLE!!!! but works great though on bridge plates and popsicle braces. I prefer fish glue, which is pre mixed and ready to use like regular glue. Lee Valley has it for reference
I have a video about mixing hide glue easy and efficiently, it is better to mix much amount and freeze it and use when you need
What’s the difference between the hide glue you buy ready to go, and the granules?
Hi! Would hide glue work on 2 pieces of wood that were accidentally sprayed with WD40? Or they have to be cleaned first.. and with what?... Thanks :)
Ratio is one part crystals to two parts water, but my can says 50/50 by weight. I experimented and that's about four teaspoons (a big 1/2 ounce) of crystals to 1/2 oz of water. Anybody have any tips? I have a can of Behlen dry ground hide glue.
tip there from one of them good ol boys for ya pardner 🤠
much obliged
How long do you let this cure? A table tennis blade maker I know uses hide glue and suggests to let the veneers cure for several weeks. He says it just plays & feels better when it cures that way. Does this make sense to you?
We recommend letting hot hide glue cure at least overnight. It should be fully cured in 24 hours. I'm not certain what factors are at work when gluing the veneers to the core of the table tennis paddles. I guess it's possible that the veneer material may be slowing the cure time.
Thank you.
I had the unpleasant experience that my jar disintegrated inside the glue pot. Didn't think the pot would get that hot to cause the glass to break
I've asked for help before about my Gibson 12 string acoustic ??? Never got an answer 😕 I'm lost if it can be fixed ??
Hi Richard. It's difficult to advise on things like this in this format. Your best bet is an in person evaluation by a reputable repair shop. If that's not possible, you can contact our techs through our website and we can try to offer advice, but ultimately they may tell you the same thing. Good luck!
Were can I get the actual glue pot please ?
MrPassion80 Here's a tip- get yourself a used Avent baby bottle warmer off of Ebay for $10. It works perfectly as a glue pot! Someday when I'm selling my instruments for top dollar I'll get myself a posh glue pot, but in the meantime, it really does the trick.
+Salko Safic Get a meat thermometer from the grocery store- go for ~145 degrees F. You can adjust the temp on the bottle warmer. The setting somewhere near the middle should be just about right.
+Salko Safic To get an accurate reading on the temp, put the thermometer in the glue, not the water.
Can this be used for making neck thru electric bodies
So, how do they turn a horse, rabbit or fish into crystals? I bet it stinks :o)
First comment :D
