That siding is already showing signs of delamination along the bottom (edge takes on a rough appearance + curving outward). T1-11 can hold up fine, as long as it is primed & painted very thoroughly from new. Most critical is along the literal bottom edge (that faces the ground). This is where it takes up moisture and begins the delam process. If this edge is primed & painted very well, that won't happen as long as you keep on top of it every few years or so. But once it begins, you can only postpone the inevitable, or cut it off. I also caulk all nails prior to priming, which is a huge pain but helps seal out moisture.
On a previous house, I had sawed 2ft. horizontally off the bottom & replaced with marine-grade plywood, then vapor barrier & Hardieplank lap siding over all. Double-thickness = better R value, quieter too. BUT, this only works if there is sufficient reveal on window casements to allow the extra thickness.

As far as prep, how do you recommend washing it before scraping/ re-painting? Bleach? Power washer? Detergent and brush?

Thanks. If left unpainted or just stained, does it easily take in water n warp, esp toward bottom? Does it need to be sealed w something before/after stain? Thank u,

We have T1-11 siding which has been stained very dark brown. Do they make a primer for stain ? I would like to change our house color to dark blue stain. Is this possible?

Hello! As you want to do a dark over a dark, you should be just fine with two coats of a solid stain without priming.

thx for making this video. I am considering using timber oil on my t1-11, have you used that product before on this siding? what I have is all wood I believe but it has treated knot holes if you know what I mean, as well as elliptical cutouts which I presume are where larger knots were removed and then replaced with an elliptical shaped piece of wood. not sure how this will look with the timber oil. any idea? thx :)

Kyak, I haven't used a timber oil on new T1-11 before. I image it will look beautiful but would do a test sample on scrape piece of T1-11 or on in inconspicuous spot on the house to make sure you like the look before proceeding.

@@TribblePaintingCompany btw its 40 yo t1-11 just new to me. was stained at one time but the dark mold spots-pre mindewcide- make it look bad, I did do a spot check and it came out much darker than the adjacent rough cedar planking on another side of the house (common practice in Alaska to use cedar on front and t1-11 on other sides). so I'll do a larger section next spring/summer, after an oxygen bleach scrub and oxalic acid brightener --and hope for the best.

while names like t1-11 siding might seem intimidating, all your painting is wood. Nothing special here besides the way its constructed and attached in sheets to the house. Wood can be painted and even stained so many ways like many other exterior materials. What issues are you encountering with your siding?

Trying to decide what primer and paint to use. Going to buy from HD. Was thinking Zinners 1-2-3 for primer and Behr Exterior for top coat, or maybe Kilz and Behr exterior.
