8番は不思議な曲だと感じます。古典的のようで、またロマン派のような先駆的な雰囲気もあります。ワルターの少し遅めで味わい深い堀りの深い演奏はさすがです。現代にない不思議な新鮮さすら感じます。曲本来のよさを再認識できました。
Rather than grouping the symphonies by odds and evens, perhaps we could group LvB's symphonies by short- versus long-form. 8 is somewhat like 5, one of the great short-form works. The first and last movements of each have some surprising similarities. In the 1st movements, there are very contrasting 1st and 2nd theme groups, with a lot of fragmentation in the intense development sections. The finales of both are the "biggest" movements with long codas that drive home the tonic intensely. 8 has its jovial movements but always has stormy and powerful undercurrents.
