FATAL Truth about Deep Sea Fishing...Catch Clean Cook (Snapper)

  • Today we head deep into the gulf of Mexico to target the many snapper species found in these fruitful waters. We encounter red snapper, yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper and various grouper. When you see fish exploding to the surface they are full of air and barotrauma is the culprit of this phenomenon. We are joined by Nick from the Return em Right a non profit conservation organization.

    What an awesome day out on the water! Thanks for having us and letting us demonstrate another option for helping fish we can't keep survive release when suffering from barotrauma. Not every fish will make it, but we like to give each one their best shot!

      When you scooped that snapper up,with no net, that was awesome, You do have a good presence on camera. You should be in more videos with maybe some other RUclipsrs like Bluegabe. You might actually make his videos enjoyable for a change. Or JoeVT. He is a good guy, but he could definitely learn something from you because he does act a but like a know it all. Love his channel and he does educate, but sometimes it's just a wee tad sanctimonious and you could point out something to him. Great job. I subscribed to,your channel.

    I worked on an 80' custom Viking with an enclosed bridge, extended fuel tanks and all sorts of other custom stuff, but that was based in Marco Island. We would run out to the gulf and fish for 2 or 3 days or run to the keys, gas up and head towards Mexico amd fish about 50 miles off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula. Then turn around and head back after about 5 days. We would catch so many grouper, snapper, marlin, dolphin, swordfish and our favorite was key west grunt or grey grunts. I loved fishing off Marco Island.

      In the Gulf of Mexico it's required to have EITHER a venting tool or descending device on board (I think you should carry both) when fishing federal waters for reef fish and in the South Atlantic it is required to have a descending device when fishing for snapper/grouper in federal waters. With that said, many anglers still don't know what descending devices are or how or when to use them... and many anglers don't know how to vent properly too. Hopefully we can help with that!

    Over the years I’ve watched catch and release of out of season species, and it make me question why you would fish for an out of season fish. I’m not talking about incidental catch, but intentionally fishing for an out of season species just doesn’t fly.
    Many anglers don’t have the ability to properly release fish. I’ve see many sport fisheries ruined, so for me it doesn’t hold water.
    I really liked your showcase of the descending tool/gear , That was very impressive. That seems like an excellent solution for successful live release of incidental catch.

    So I’ve heard arguments about venting ur fish, that it punctures their swim bladder so it can no longer inflate and swim up so there’s just a bunch of dead snapper grouper etc at the bottom of the ocean

    • @returnemright
      @returnemright Год назад +2

      Venting fish does work when done quickly and properly. However, there is a lot more room for error putting a needle into a fish close to its organs. What some studies have shown is that fish will often stay along the bottom a little longer and recover for a few days prior to resuming normal swimming/feeding behavior

    PRO TIP FOR PIN FISH FOR BAIT!!
    Put two pin fish on a hook and they’ll bang against creating a bunch of vibrations and noise. Obviously if you’re in a super active spot like this you don’t need to do this. BUT if you’re having a slow day or fishing in the flats or new area it’s a great way to get hits. It’s worked for me for years!!

    Sometime when you don’t want to anchor use a 3 ounce white bucktail jig with two trailing hooks pinched on. Put the jig hook through the head of the ballyhoo even with his eyes, bury the other two hooks in his belly. Cast out in the direction of your drift over your spot. Sweep up off the bottom and drop again. Pull around and repeat, no anchoring, easy peasy. Try it

Another mark-recapture study from this past year showed 2-3x higher survival rates (or recapture rates) for descended red snapper and red grouper than vented ones

    What’s to keep the sharks from grabbing the fish you send back down?

    • @returnemright
      @returnemright Год назад

      There's nothing stopping them besides the fact that the fish act differently on the way down. Sharks are most often attracted to a struggling fish that is vibrating and fighting for its life. The fish aren't acting that way upon descent. We send a camera down with 90% of our drops and haven't had a shark eat one. It's certainly possible, but far far less common than you would expect. There's an ongoing study releasing fish with GoFishCameras and descending devices across the Gulf of Mexico and only 1 out of 464 fish were eaten off the device by a shark and one other was eaten by a dolphin shortly after release (preliminary results).

    Needs to be limits on big mangroves,it's called depleted fishery

    • @returnemright
      @returnemright Год назад

      A stock assessment (SEDAR 75) was actually done on Gulf of Mexico Gray Snapper (mangroves) this past year and the stock is not undergoing overfishing nor is it overfished. The spawning stock biomass was much higher than needed to support maximum sustainable yield. To sum that up, mangrove snapper populations are doing great in the Gulf and a solid option for a sustainable fish to eat. With that said, we did not keep our limit and released some too.
