Thank you for this video.. very useful seeing someone without the proper piston compression/twist tool.
Cheers
Well done! I have seen professionals who aren't as thorough as you were on that job.
+wysetech2000 thanks! The wife and baby use that car the most so it has to be done right 😀
Great to see you release brake nipple to release brake fluid when pushing back brake piston. ( could have clamped brake hose)Apparently not doing this can damage the seals in brake master cylinder as fluid is going in reverse ( Hayes Manual
Great work Jonathan and you don't have to worry about the rear brakes for quite awhile now :)
I hope not. Not too sure why they were worn like they were though
You could just borrow the proper tools like Thomas 😎 I thought when the bee came back for the second time, it was going to get ugly. ha ha. I agree with Ozzstar, thought you were topping off the wiper fluid with brake juice. 😂
Not in this country! And the nearest place to buy one is 45 minutes away. I'm glad he was a friendly bee, I've written enough accident reports for the weekend already. I've heard brake juice doesn't make a great windscreen washer fluid. Maybe that needs mythbusting
Haha 4 vid series. Man the calliper piston was a pita without the tool. Well done buddy. 👍👍
haha just for you ;) Improvise, adapt and overcome is how it goes at Badgertronix HQ. Cheers!
Hi, nice video. Is the torx t50 or t40 should it be
"Just lube up your shaft nicely and get it ready for action", nice one mate! 😁
That's how we do it 🤣
Nice job fella.
Regards Baz....UK
+moodyjeep Cheers!
Great job on the brake work and like those steel toe flip flops Too...haha
haha yep, my Samoan safety shoes get a lot of use! Cheers!
Good stuff man! Those pads sure were mangled!
Cheers! They sure were and don't really know why
That flashlight didn't want to stay put a few times... always good to find & replace stuff before things get too dicey.
+Thomas EXOVCDS it was a $6 special. They're nice and bright and would stick better if I was less clumsy!
Great how-to video, I've got a 2012 Mondeo hatchback that at some stage will need new pads and probably rotors. This is the first time I've heard of Mintex, whereabouts in NZ do you get them from? Given that it's now been a few months since you've changed the pads, how are they holding up?
+Michael Aldridge thank you! These came from www.micksgarage.com in Ireland. Pads, discs and fitting kit came to less than $200 delivered. You won't get close to that price in NZ. Mintex are decent quality, I've used them before with no issues. So far I've done about 5000kms in the Mondeo and they're working great
Hi! Thanks heaps again for your great videos. I started this job today and I’m stuck. Mrs isn’t impressed we have the car in the driveway half done haha On re watching I noticed you opened the bleeder valve when rewinding the piston. I forgot to do this step and no matter how many times I rotated the piston, it wouldn’t go in. Is this happening purely because I didn’t open the bleed valve or is it possibly something else?
So I slept on it and gave it another crack. After a bit more pushing and probing I was finally able to squeeze in the piston rewind tool. Thanks heaps for this guide! This was the first time ever changing brake pads and rotors. Cheers from Philip Island, Melbourne
Excellent thank you.
Thanks :)
Working on a brake master cylinder on the right side of the car is something I would have to get use to. haha
We haven't had them on the wrong side of the car since the MK1 Golf and those brakes were terrible.
Are both sides turn clockwise to move the piston in? I have an X Type but the callipers are the Type 2 which differ from the Mondeo you have. On another vid the guy said RHS was clockwise and LHS was anticlockwise to turn the piston?
Pretty sure they're clockwise for both. Been a while since I did some though
Could you do a rear wheel hub/bearing replacement video for Ford Mondeo MK4?
If I come across a car that needs one I will make a vid. Can't guarantee when that will be though. Cheers!
Hi, i have a ford galaxy 2012 model they have disc on the back are they the same as doing front breaks. A mechanic told me that there hard to change. what is your oppinion mate. thanks
I'd say they were similar to the Mondeo where you need to wind back the caliper piston like in this video. The proper tool makes the job easy
found the same problem with the rear brake pads on my friend's mondeo .....never seen this problem before on other vehicles
+blaramazozi me neither. Will see how the Mintex pads hold up.
Is it totally necessary to crack the bleed nipple while screwing the piston back in?
+Mr.Mister not at all. I just do it as I'm usually changing the brake fluid at the same time.
just fitted that make discs and pads on my citroën c3 picasso hear in the UK one of the cheapest euro part limited sets interested to see how you're and mine hold out I did the front with discs and pads for £40 all in
Wow that's cheap. I've used them before on my Passata dn I think some other cars and they have been decent. Hopefully can't be worse than the Motorcraft ones I took off! Cheers
😀
Those are some surprisingly beefy rear rotors!
Retracting that style of caliper piston is an absolute pain to do with a pair of pliers. I've never had much luck!
A four part series on tightening lug nuts... That would be painfully boring, loaded with excessive information, and generally pointless; sounds right up my alley! I'll get on that at some point. ;)
+rhkips they are the biggest non vented rotors I've ever seen... The piston wasn't too bad, but next time I'll use the right tool. Just couldn't keep my inner MacGyver at bay. The wheel nut series was a reference to Steve's Canadian tyre escapade!
If i did not watch your video i would have broken my caliper because i did not know turning the piston to send it back in to allow the pads to fit.
Glad it helped you out
I'll usually use neverseize or wheel bearing grease for the slides...Not really necessary to crack off the bleeder and you didn't clock the slots in the piston for the inner pad mate..Oh...That pad set doesn't have a positioning pin on the pad..I thought they did....I just do all the bolts up to the Steve Rob wheel nut torque spec..lmao..Here's a tip...Manually apply the park brake at the caliper to wind the piston out for adjustment...Just sayin'.
+ZIGgassedUP cheers Zig. Thanks for the tips! The Ford manual specifically mentions clamping the brake line and opening the bleeder when winding the piston back. I was changing the fluid anyway so went with this way
Hi do you know the torque settings for the front wheel slider pins and carrier bolts?
No sorry. I'm sure Google does
@@Badgertronix thanks, that's okay. Google says the carrier bolts should be 200NM, does that sound excessively high..?
talkford.com/community/topic/241672-torque-wrench-settings-for-brakes/#:~:text=Front%20caliper%20slide%20pins%20-%2028,35%20Nm%20(26lbf%20ft).
Are these on all new cars now. My old van has the E brake on the inside of the rotor like the old drum brakes. What a pain those are. These look better. Guess I will need to wonder over to Amazon and get a kit for the wife's new escape. It seems you never can have all the tools you need. Hey at least it will help fill the empty space in my tool box. Great video Jonathan. later dude. -John
+Big Guy Review hi John. Must be more common in European cars. I don't remember ever having a car with a separate e-brake. You're right, you can never have too many tools! Cheers
I removed the handbrake cable to replace the bolts, wish I hadn't now, can't get the bugger back slotted into the lever on the back of the caliper. Car stuck now 🙁
That is a bugger. That's why I left the one bolt. Hope you get it sorted easily
Bit of a resurrection but here goes- replaced rear pads on a 2009 Mondeo wagon at the weekend and the Motorcraft pads were just like this only worse- the entire face of the pad was ripped off the backing plate...
Ah wow, I wonder what makes them crumble like that? The Mintex ones I fitted seem to be wearing fine. Cheers
bit of a pain pushing back the caliper good job bud
+DriveShaft Drew the tool would have made it easier but still got the job done. Cheers!
You stay busy maintaining your vehicles but could you imagine what it would cast if you had to have a shop do the work? Your doing good by doing the work yourself so I think you should tell your wife how much money you saved so you can buy more tools!
+wyattoneable I'd hate to think how much it would cost to get the work done here. For a start I pay between a third to a half the price of parts compared to the local market. Then add labour at $100+ per hour and I think I can justify my tool investment! Cheers Wyatt
Nothing like a nicely lubed shaft 😜
One of the finer things in life 👍
lol, technically i have never changed that top caliper bolt that won't clear the park brake cable either.
+alan howatt haha yep, I don't see too many people bothering to change it.
That's what she said. 😂
