- Ford Mondeo MK3 Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement, Disc and Pads
In this video, I show you how to fit a wheel bearing to our Mondeo mk3. We also fit a new disc rotor and fit new brake pads. I have a few problems that you might come up against so check this video out to see how I overcame these problems.

This guy is single handedly keeping my mk3 mondeo on the road. This video gave me the confidence to replace the offside rear bearing. The tip about using the gas blowtorch is pure gold as I'd never tried before that and using my old man's blowtorch the 4 nuts cracked right off. Legend 👍
I've got to do the exact same wheel bearing this week on my mk3 Estate. It's great when you can see real life problems being sorted on a driveway, brilliant video😇
Dealing with problems as they arise, rusty and stuck bolts and, all done on the driveway where most of us have to work. This is far more helpful than being shown how to do it in a garage with hydraulic lift, compressor and all mod cons.
This is the first video I watched of yours back in 2015 which got me hooked!! Never missed a one since.
These Mk3's are so easy to work on - did one of my hubs in about 45 min this morning.
Your videos are very much appreciated for those like us, Mondeo owners. Cheers mate!
+Marco de la Peña Thanks Marco, Cheers bud.
Martin
excellent video as ever Martin that was one pig of a job with way things went, but as ever you never give up and get the job done I'm sure plenty of owners will find that really useful, look forward to next video
+Murdo Mackay Cheers bud, yes it was a pig but a bit of heat helped.
Cheers
Martin
Very nice, loving your videos, very easy to follow, not rushed and lots of detail. Cheers
+Steven Mason Thank you Steven.
Cheers
Martin
Cheers for a great vid, just about to change the rear bearings, discs, pads on my Mondeo ST220 so was very informative as to the issues i may come across.
+EllipticRecords Glad you got something from the vid bud. Thanks
Martin
Going to have a go doing mine this weekend thank for the tips and tricks:)
Everything looks so easy with your magic hands. I became a proud owner of Mondeo mk3 2004 caravan, and would like to learn things. Thanks for this video. Great work.
+Nenad Jovanovic Hey, that's great. Check out my other Mondeo vids, they might help as well.
Cheers
Martin
fantastic video thanks for sharing it hope you had a cup of tea while you were doing it.
+pengers777000s Cheers bud and yes, Sharon made me a cup of tea lol.
Cheers
Martin
Thank you for us new diy'ers, great vid!!
Another idea for fitting new discs is to spray paint the entire disc In heat resistant paint. This will prevent corrosion on the outer surfaces, and the contact surfaces will wear off with the (careful at first) use of the brakes.I forgot to add....superb job with video sir....well done!
Great series for the Mondeo. I have a 2006 Ford Mondeo Mk 3, great details for working on them, keep up the good work, I am quite a Fan
Thanks Graeme
Thanks again Martin, your a star mate.... I changed my wheel bearing / hub yesterday and had to apply all the tips you mentioned. Had a problem with one of the bottom T50 bolts even applying heat it started to strip the inside star.... I am an electrician by trade and im lucky enough to have a good quality battery powered Impact driver and as a last resort I tried using it and it did the job. The hub cost me £46 and I did it in about 3 hours ..... I was quoted by a local garage £371 to do the job.... so i'm really pleased to have saved all that money as im semi retired now and cant afford big garage bills.... Thanks again, Steve
Top Job Steve, As an ex sparks myself, you will have a logical approach to things and that will help.
Cheers
Martin
Very informative Martin. I've got to do my golf this week it looks like the same set up as the ford. Great vid bud.
+mrnatty122 Cheers bud, I thought it might help to show the possible problems rather than leave that sort of stuff out.
Good luck with yours.
Cheers
Martin
Good job Martin, especially in the rain!
+cheftush Haha, Was a bit wet Dave, only started raining when I started that job.
Cheers
Martin
Glad it's not just me that has all these hassles with cars. They certainly make you work for it. You do feel a sense of achievement when you get there though. Well done mate, great video actually showing the reality when you're doing these jobs, not like a lot of videos where everything comes off and goes back together easy.
Very true!
great vid mate, i've got the same halfords socket set and i am going to do my bearings soon. now i know i will need to open the inspection hole a bit to get the socket in. it's the little details like that, that make the video brilliant. keeep up the good work.
+oakfront Hey, hope the vid helps bud. Good luck with yours.
Cheers
Martin
Excellent video - gotta do mine and will use your video to help me.
Great video! Thanks again Martin!
great video Martin,thanks !!
Very Nice job. This video helped me a lot. thank you very much
Loved your video pal. Really nice bloke, really easy to follow.
Thanks bud
I did this today on a 06 saloon thanks to the tips in this video. The bolts holding on the hub are T50 but you need to wire brush the crap out of them first or you may wonder if they are T50 , I bought a King Tony long reach T50 socket well worth the few pounds if your in a hurry
it didn't seem necessary to take off the handbrake cable on the saloon but I did heat the brake carrier bolts to make it easier to get them off luckily it went smoothly all in all it took about a hour and a half from wheel off to wheel on
Nice job bud. Glad the vid helped.
Cheers
Martin

Great vid as usual Martin, been there done that myself mate never turns out to be easy, but hey these things have got to be done. Looking forward to the next vid mate !!!
+cabdriveruk And it had to rain as soon as I started it lol.
Cheers bud.
Martin
Another good vid, Martin. As a 'top tip' - for jacking up my cars I use a solid rubber ice hockey puck on the top of my trolley jack head. They fit almost perfectly and only cost a couple of quid on ebay. You can even get them with a slit cut into them to locate securely on the sill lip. I stole the idea from my local tyre shop who use them all the time ;). Cheers, Mark.
+Tiger moth Nice one Mark, I'll give that a try.
Cheers
Martin
+Tiger moth Great tip, will invest in that I think.
GTs Garage
I've just ordered 2 from Ebay. They have the slits in as well.
+retrorestore Nice one. I look forward to seeing you use them in your future vids!!. Mark.
+GTs Garage You're welcome. Its all about sharing stuff and helping each other.
thank you for this video help me successfully fix my car good video and very helpful thanks
+Gary Dixon Nice one Gary. Glad the vid helped.

Very useful & well made. Thanks
Thanks for watching bud.
Great video, I'll make the job on weekend thanks to this :D
+jarasek2 Good luck bud.
Cheers
Martin
iv'e done same job on my mondeo mk 3 take your time to undo bolts easy fix thank's martin watched your video .
Thank for your vid mate it saved me 100 notes ,was quoted 160 to do one side so I bought the bearing and a long t 50 and done it myself , the robbing bar stewards!!! Lol the hardest bit was getting the wheel off as it was solid , I hate garages, at least I know it's done right and something else hasn't been "played" with!!!
Cheers have a good xmas
Nice one Lee, well done for giving it a go and saving money.
Cheers
Martin
All my Mondeo road wheels were seized to the hubs. Quickest way to break them off is to loosen the wheel nuts (leave em all on one full turn) and drop the car (not too fast) off the trolley jack. If you're doing it on the scissor jack you're probably screwed- rubber mallet might work but you've got to be brave/stupid to work under a car on a scissor. Spent ages cleaning up the lip on the alloys before putting them back on. I'm now carrying a trolley and hammer in the car all the time (Estate so there's loads of space) in case I get a puncture. Never had this issue on any other car, it's like the alloy actually welds itself to the hub
@@ajwitt7472 . Put copper grease on surface between wheel and brake disc to avoid problem in future.
Just the video I needed thank you very much
+Matt Jupp No problem bud.
Cheers
Martin
Great video, I'm no mechanic but I reckon I could do this now I have seen your video, thanks .
Thanks bud, Cheers
Martin
Cheers for the upload. About to attempt the rear brakes on my mondeo estate. Fronts were easy enough but I was told rears can be harder due to handbrake. Seems to be much the same. Cheers
Hope the vid helps bud.
Cheers
Martin
Well done Martin great video
Thanks bud.
Cheers
Martin
always make things look simple and easy to do ha :) great work
+Mark Bowles Thanks bud. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
Excellent video.. Gongratulations.
Thanks for washing
Cheers
Martin
Great job..
Good job mate! little tip to help with break squeal in the future is to apply a little copper grease on the back of the pads, and in the sliders where they move back and forward! Really good job though
+The Savage Garage Cheers bud. I keep forgetting that lol. I have a tin as well lol.
Cheers
Martin
Thank you for the Nice Video, It's a lot of help. :)
Glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers
Martin
Could nt see what type of socket you used on the rounded screw but if a hex socket spins on the head try using a 15 point socket hammered on instead of hex. helped me a few times nice vid easy to follow thanks for uploading
great video. thanks
+Ken Lingard Thanks for watching Ken.
Is the overload rubber in the rear spring standard on the estate version ?
+fupabox Not sure bud.
Cheers
Martin

Martin
retrorestore have you got a link to the tool you bought to wind the piston back with thanks
Cant remember bud but it was on Ebay.
hi Martin, nice vid, thanks! i bought my mondeo before two months, really comfortable and nice car, i heard the wheel bearing noise from the test ride, i bought the car and now time for replacement has come, i found the new part from 54€-200€ incl. tax, and i will replace it myself. Bolts must be replace with new or not? and the bolts must have this blue sealing glue when mount the new one or it is not necessary? You believe that the cheap one can have reliable quality or not to think to buy it at all? Thanks, Labis
Hi Labis, The kit normally comes with the nrw bolts and they normally have the threadlock on the bolts. Good luck with it bud.
Chears , really good your tutorial movie , you help me save some money ;) thx
+Simon Cornel Hey, nice one Simon. Good luck bud.
Cheers
Martin
Thx mate...
Another great video Martin. A couple of questions, first one might test your memory. Any idea where the air con compressor is on the TDDi, can't see if when looking into the engine bay? Mine has gone so another job to do. Secondly, which brand of rotor and pads do you generally go for, as the prices vary considerably at Eurocarparts?
Cheers!
Chris
I think it's on the left front as you look into the engine bay but don't quote me on it lol. I have no preference on pads, I just use my local motor factors.
have you had any dealing with comline pads and discs I managed to get rear discs and pads with integrated wheel bearings and abs ring all in for the c3 picasso for 83.95 fully shipping there a UK company how bad cam thay do I say???
No I haven't Shane.Sounds like a good deal though.
Cheers
Martin
Interesting video as always. Looks like you've got a few idiots disliking the video.... Keep up em' coming Mart!
+markybyeah Yes I always get one as a rule Mark but three, I can't please everyone I suppose lol.
Cheers
Martin
Thanks for this man, gotta do both the rear bearings on my ST220 at some point...not looking forward to it!
It's not too bad a job. Good luck bud.
Cheers
Martin
i realize Im quite off topic but do anyone know a good website to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Cruz Krew Flixportal :)
@Guillermo Angelo Thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service =) Appreciate it!!
@Cruz Krew happy to help xD
ahh love the cat!!!
Very good video but one suggestion grind the heads of the t50 bolts
+Mat Franklin Thanks for the tip.
Cheers
Martin
Have you scrapped this because no test on it for over a year
We sold it a couple of years ago
Nice vid.
How did I know When to change the bearing?
It was wining bud.
another great video martin i got the same caliper tool as you but my piston will not budge even with a stilson does ths mean my caliper is shot thanks again very informative
+Damian Fitzroy if it is the passenger side, it's a left handed thread and you can't use that tool. You can get an allen key in the middle of the pistin and wind it in.
Cheers
Martin
No Martin it was rear driver side
Damian Fitzroy
Ahh, I see. it might be corroded in then.
I had the same problem - it was the lever on the caliper which connects to the handbrake cable (is there a particular name for this?) - I had to alternate between WD40 soaks, wire brushes and hitting with a lump hammer to free the mechanism back up. Took ages but eventually got going again.
Nice one.
Good man, reduce the circumference of the socket with a grinder instead. That saves you from botching brand new parts! Nice cat, btw.
Martin fair play . All tight and seized up. Such a git of a job , when it happens that way.
The heat is a winner for sure. Is Pussy Galore holding the umbrella . She must be dreaming. Cheers Pete.
Mart, does the caliper wind in the same way on the other side?
Not on the estate bud.
😎
If anyone needs to know, the X type estate both calipers wind in the same direction as the wheels go round when going forward. 2007 model 2.2
Hello, please all, it is possible to Mondeo MK3 2001 85kw , 115hp to work without EGR?
I just notice today that my does not have, and I am trying to understand why
You can blank them off but you'll get an engine management light on and it might run rough unless the computer is re mapped I think.
This might be a dumb question but how do you know when wheeling bearings go bad? Is it just by sound or can you feel it while driving. Reason I ask is my car is 15 years old with 180k miles and I've never changed them.
Beautiful cat by the way.
All the best,
Jay
+Jay Dighsx Yes Jay, you can hear them and if you jack the wheel up, you can normally hear them if you spin the wheel by hand.
Cheers
Martin
+Jay Dighsx If you jack the car up until the wheel is free from the ground, the put hands at 9 oclock and 3 oclock, and try and move it.. if it has any play that's an indication the bearings are worn.
also martin, when i do the passenger side bearing, i haven't got the winding tool, you say i can use an allen key, can you tell me which way it winds in ?
cheers bud.
gaz.
+oakfront The passenger is a left handed thread so you have to screw it in by turning the allen key anticlockwise whilst pushing the piston a little as well.
Cheers
Martin
hi martin, thanks for the advice, but to save anyone else 4 hours of hardship in the cold and rain, mine is an 2003 mondeo and the passenger side piston rewind is CLOCKWISE NOT ANTICLOCKWISE. i can laugh about it now, but i sure wasn't laughing at the time, and it aint done my knuckles any good (whats left of them i mean).... ;-)
+oakfront Doh, What a jockey I am, I know it was the opposite to the other side but I must have got it wrong Aaghh. Hope you got over it though.
Cheers
Martin
+retrorestore
im just finishing off now after yeaterday afternoon and this morning. what a pain. nothing ever goes right with cars lol. in all fairness i've just noticed yours is an estate,, and to make things even more complicated, i'm sure the estates are the other way round for some reason, so you may have been right the first time martin. (what a minefield)
+oakfront Yes, I think it is only on Estates. I take it yours was a saloon, Oh well we know for next time.
Cheers
Martin
Hi , I am now working & living in Qatar , I have a 2006 Mondeo mk3 , and i would like to ask you to kindly help me with some advises to replace and fix my car AC (Summer is very hot in the desert you know ...) Thanks .I appreciate your work.
+Assamna Assamna I've not worked on the AC so I can't really comment. Sorry.
Cheers
Martin
Where are you getting your parts from by the way? looking at euro car spares or car spares ltd it's sky high prices
I've had hassle with Euro and Ford so you just gotta check what they supply and make sure you have the right parts and they have them in stock.
In other words when possible take the part in with you when possible to compare before purchasing haha
Never copped grease the hub bolts you should locktite them so they don’t rattle loose
Copper*
I've never heard of that happening in my 40 years on working on cars.
You should ALWAYS reassemble with copper grease on any bolts. These bolts should be torqued anyway and this will prevent them coming loose. Copper grease is especially useful on the wheel studs/bolts as these can (and do) seize in place, making an emergency wheel change a nightmare!
One question Martin Milk and sugar ? both or neither ?
+abrahms2000 Always a dash of milk but no sugar. Nice and strong lol.
Cheers
Martin
Great stuff Martin. Why dont you let the lady have a go at the car mechanics? We did a similar job together. My wife had more patience than I had when the 13mm brake caliper bolts would not budge on our Hyundai I just wish we could of seen your video before we started our own brake pad and pad replacement.. Thank you anyway, Best wishes
haha, she has no interest Dave lol
@@retrorestore Sensible woman Martin! Cheers mate. Love your videos.
Ive never seen an easy brake job done yet, Always seized and stripped bolts, and to do it all in the rain. I guess I'm getting too old and would have taken it to Speedy Brake Service.
+Brian Percival Haha, Seized and stripped, sounds like me before I got in the bath lol
Cheers
Martin
Rounded off bolts back on? Standard
+Ian Just they wasn't totally rounded off but if I would have forced them, they would have rounded off so I went down a size to get over the job. gotta use a 1/2" in future but they had to go back in coz I didn't have any replacements. In an ideal world, i'd fit new bolts but if you don't have them, what else is there to do.
You forgot to check and lubricate the pins on the calliper.
Loved it, like your true to life video, very helpful, well done mate, and the pussy jokes too......
15:20 to jest dobre Ha Ha ha
+A5D5C5 dziękuję
knee pads will save your joints!
Yes, I know you are right but I always forget lol.
Cheers
Martin
Shame you didnt put copper ease on the pads to stop them squieking when warm
Yes, I know about that but in my opinion, that doesn't really work and they have never squeeked since doing them and that was a year ago.
Cheers
Martin
i agree with you Martin. If the pads are a good quality make eg Brembo, Jurid, Pagid, you shouldn't need to put copperslip on the pads. It's the preparation of the pad carriers and caliper itself that most people forget to do. Im a fully qualified mechanic, and even though not in the mechanics game anymore, i always do my pads and disc changes the same way Eric does at South Main auto. It's extremely important to file off any uneven bit of rust where the pad clips sit as this will cause the pad to get jammed in the carrier and wear unevenly. Cleaning the caliper sliding pins is crucial too.
ruclips.net/video/Yhw_d_EWrOQ/видео.html
That brake disc came off way to easily. It's not proper on if it doesn't require an acetylene torch and a sledgehammer. Bonus points if you split it along it's "lenght". Ask me how I know.... :)
YOu don't put the hardware on?
+rimmersbryggeri Don't know what you mean bud
The tinware that comes with the pads. that you put in the caliper before the pad.
rimmersbryggeri
There was no tinware.
Ok my mistake I thought I saw some on the caliper as you took the pads out. In our discount car parts warehouses here you have to buy that stuff separately. I never did it on my mondeo though so I don't know. The brakes were new when I got it so I guess they will last a few years.
rimmersbryggeri
Cheers bud.
Martin
hub pullers are cheap on eBay why wouldn't ya
Those calliper bolts are way too tight
Just think he has to go threw all this the other side ;-(
Haha, yes it all got done.
Cheers
Martin
Haha, yes it all got done.

retrorestore Great job too Martin. The dual mass replacement videos made this look like child's play though!
*****
Haha, I can assure you that it isn't lol
My GOD! im shocked ha ha. anyway thanks for all the videos you are the man ;-)
