I'm reminded every day that my parrots are wild animals in the way they are so independent and even afraid of my hands at times. Even if they're hand-raised, some birds require more work or may never want to step up to you. I've found with my parrots, which are a rather flighty species, it just makes sense to let them be birds. If we're going to keep them in captivity, we might as well give them plenty of room to fly when they want, explore when they want, and decide to trust us on their own terms. Granted, with small birds that don't have much capability for destruction like mine, this is a lot easier. :) It's kind of amazing when a bird decides on their own terms that they want to spend time with you.
Being in my 60’s It wouldn’t be responsible for me to get a bird so I’ll stick to the fish I have done my whole life. I do appreciate all the bird videos on RUclips. Watching Kiwi up in Canada you can’t help be cheered up if you are feeling down.
Budgies all day, friend. The only thing about them that's NOT perfect for me is their short little lifespans. My little fella is my best friend in the entire world.
Hey guys! I've been watching some of your vids recently as I might get a parrot in the future so I wanted as much info as possible. Your vids by far are the most insightful I've found on the internet ;) Despite being so long, I really enjoy watching and listening to you and your birds as well. I usually don't write comments but I feel like you guys deserve more views so I figured I'd comment on your vid and let you know that you are awesome :) Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for the support! If I could go through these points in less time, I would, but I just wanted to make bird ownership as clear as possible.
There's so much information that i doubt it'd be possible to make it any shorter, in fact it feels this vid could go on for hours haha. So you did the right thing. One of a kind content!
One of the most honest vidieos about parrots. I have a Goffin and love her completely. You also need to know if there is a Avian Vet near you. Not all vets will deal with a bird. They are a real Jeckle and Hyde experience.
I had a cockatiel that lived for 26 years. My aunt is national championship breeder and National Cockatiel Society judge. He was given to me as a kid because he couldn’t be shown after one of her african grays attacked him and took off one of his toes. He was from really good lines, which is maybe why he lived so long but he was one of if not the longest lived cockatiel she has ever bred. He lived from 1988 to 2014. At the time that he died he was a year older than my girlfriend.
I’m retired and can spend more time with my birds but still I need to leave them alone occasionally. I think my gcc could deal with this alone but my sun isn’t tolerant of solitude. I don’t know about caiques but a gcc will really calm down a sun conure. They play and the gcc is boss and they snuggle at night and I’m a welcome member of the flock. When they were young, I started letting them eat fruit that I held in my teeth and that sped up the bond. Utube videos of conures hastened my gcc to begin talking at 5 months and he’s a real talker. The sun conure mumbles but it’s nothing distinguishable. I gave up on store bought wooden toys as sun will destroy it in a week or two. I cut up small blocks of wood and he’s just as happy tearing those up. I also but 3/4 inch wooden dowels and use white glue to attach sandpaper around them. That’s really effective for their beaks. They both fly when I’m home. I can’t imagine the gcc hurting himself as he’s a fluttering ball when he flies and isn’t very fast indoors. I think he’d need a breeze to fly fast. The sun conure is a strong bird and a strong flyer. He’s never flown into anything that remains still but he’s collided with my heads as we’ve turned corners simultaneously. I’ve got a big cage and two mediums for different functions. They’re never out when I’m gone or asleep as they’re flying toddlers except with sharp beaks that can reach anywhere. I used to free fly the sun but a hawk attack stopped that. I almost had a heart attack when that happened. Hawks will come right down near you to try it. I miss it but he’s adapting to swooping and sharp turns indoors. I’m forgetting dozens of other things and I don’t want to write a novel either 😀
Small birds can hurt, too! When I was young, I was grabbing and holding my budgies very wrong, because of missing knowledge and because I had noone that could teach me about birds in general. The answer of my budgies was really hard biting, till to the point blood was drawn. I didn't hurt them, but I was not paying attention to their body language etc. Nowadays I have an indian ringneck, and I can't imagine how that would hurt if he was biting me with full power. It just hasn't happened yet. His destroying power on some days is immense, as a hint. I have vast more knowledge today and my birds are happy. But hard biting can still happen in the future.
I always wanted a cockatoo... that is until I owned a cockatiel and found out how temperamental they can be! The way they can be chillin' out with you one moment, enjoying some neck scratching, and then suddenly decide that's enough and turn around and give you a nasty bite! And while a cockatiel's bite is not all that serious, it sure gave me second thoughts about getting a cockatoo, with its so much larger...and stronger beak! But I must be a glutton for punishment because I'd still like to get something a bit larger than a cockatiel at some point. So, in the meantime, I've been learning about the personalities of various parrot breeds and, from what I'm hearing, it seems I might enjoy a Pionus Parrot. I especially like the subtle beauty of the Dusky Pionus and would welcome hearing from anyone who owns one, especially how their personality and behavior might differ from the other Pionus types.
My male cockatiel lived for 27 1/2 years, and I have heard of some that lived to be 30+. That's not common, but something to think about. It hit me when I read somewhere else a comment from a 12 year old saying he really wanted a cockatiel, and I'm thinking "Will you still want it when your 17, or 21 in college, or 30 when you move somewhere and have a family, or a job for which you must travel?" It's a big commitment.
As someone who has or has had nearly every major type of pet, I believe that parrots are the best pets after cats and dogs. As long as you know what you're doing. My 21 year old lovebird is the single best pet I've ever had.
I have 5 birds all are or were special needs birds. My senegal 2years old and GCC 1year old i got from a breeder for handfeeding . My seccond senegal 18 years old was gifted to me he is a plucker and hormonal and agressive. My Egregia conure 1year old has deformed feet, beak, and wings i got her because the owner could not tame her. Rose cockatoo 1year old she has deformed legs. I love them so much. We had to do a lot of modifications. Now I have 5 couch potatoes ♡. In the Netherlands 🇳🇱 its illegal to handfeed baby's by someone other than the breeder.
Where did you buy your Pionus Parrot from? I went to your Pionus video. I found out. I apologize. I love your and your gf videos. Keep them up! Your honest about parrot ownership and that is refreshing.
I am looking into getting a bird in the future at some point and I love your guys videos. They help me to do research on what it takes to care for a bird and what types of birds I think I could get. Also I became creeped out a bit when I saw a big white spider on Sakuras back at 30:32. And then it fell onto your arm. Gave me shivers.
Your channel is simply awesome and is binge watching your videos. It’s very informative and I learned so much as am currently doing research before getting my first bird. Am changing my mind about getting a grey now and seriously thinking another. Both of you are just awesome!
Our family has had birds and overall mix of animals our whole lives, so been use to it and can't really live without having a pet. Currently our Cockatiels are mid twenties and going strong. Will be getting a Senegal shortly as well as a personal bird.
I'm getting a Senegal parrot soon and I'm really excited! I actually think my rescue dog prepared me though. She had intense separation anxiety and was very loud and destructive. She was also reactive to pretty much everything, lunging at cars, people, dogs... And she was extremely high energy, we would spend 3-4hrs on walks, hikes and bike rides and needed a lot of mental stimulation too. It was really hard. I guess the difference is that 6 years and a LOT of training later she's pretty mellow, whereas with a parrot it'll probably be that much work forever. :D
I've heard that from the breeder im getting my cockatiel soon, some people have been waiting 7 YEARS for a bird mutation, 7 YEARS! (and yes, the breeder is a profesional that breeds bird for mutations)
I have hand reared a fair few wild birds ,they all without any exceptions ,spent way too much time nesting in my hair ,usually sitting on top of my head and fluffing up my hair ,then settling down in the mess , I have long hair ,they pull strands to top of my head mess it up as much as possible ,then settle down for snooze . Birds just seem to love hair .
You give such good and accurate advice on all aspects of bird care. Thank you,I would love a bird, but could never provide long term attention and commitment 🌍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🌍
They are, I have a Quaker parrot, have had her since the summer of 2020, and she’s the best. Sometimes she’ll be in her little mood where she hates me for no reason, but she’s basically stopped that now.
Parrots being bad pets is actually why I'm interested. We tend not to show our animals respect. I like aloof. I took care of my aunts African Grey for a few months and he was like a roomie. It was a challenge but he was interested in a way dogs and cats kind of aren't. He had his own opinions, moods, routines. If I give a cat or dog food they like they're gonna eat it, the Parrot might throw it and laugh. They're...present idk how to say it but I wish more people appreciated it.
Ive had a Macaw that was old and my neighbor noticed i played with it over the fence . I think they watched me from in the house or video. Finally they told me i could take it for a walk the he needs attention. Loud, house broke and so fun. They wanted me to adopt it but i wasn't able. I live in a senior apartment and can't have that noise but ive had ,sun conure, cocktail, canary, 10 finch 1 cage. The huge had a love of travel in the car and at 50 years old was a good friend.
My cat bit me once when it had a seizure. The next day, I had a fever of 104 and my had was the size of a catcher’s mitt. I had to get an antibiotic shot and then be on antibiotics for over a week. I think I’d opt for a smaller parrot nip over that! Lol
Yeah, love cats, but Cat Scratch Fever is no joke. Their teeth and claws are riddled with bacteria, which is why one bite or scratch on a small animal can be deadly within minutes. Whenever I get scratched or bit (even if it's just a tiny surface wound), I always wash the area _immediately_ with a bacterial soap, no chances taken. Luckily, I consider myself pretty good at reading cat body language, so those times are few and far between.
Thank you for the wonderful video. I enjoy watching parrots and parrot videos, but actually am a parakeet person! I love learning about all birds though, and am happy to have found your channel!
Thanks for this video, I've been learning more about different types of pets lately. Your bird family is beautiful! If anyone wants something dog-like but small, I suggest fancy rats (dumbo rats can be super sweet among other breeds). Needs daily attention time though so get them in a pair if you don't plan to have daily handling time (they can get depressed). But rats can be trained, and are affectionate to their pet parent bonds. Their teeth constantly grow so keep chew toys etc plenty for health and mental stimulation. :)
I couldn’t disagree more about Macaws…. I agree that most people aren’t Macaw people but I believe with the RIGHT information they are the best parrots out there. I would love to come one a live stream and talk about it.
How are dogs not a huge commitment pet ? Asking I have 4 dogs and they are very needy also lifespan is up to 16 years. I do want a bird at same point. Maybe a parrotlet
Dogs, learned to understand humans to such a extent that they see us as family over countless years; "They are just TOOO Nice" lol But its good to know about how birds act. Wild animals after all
i'm hoping to get a green cheek conure and was wondering if you could do a video on reputable breeders for hand raised birds. I do not have the experience to hatch or raise a young bird and am hoping to find a bird that has been weened. The other thing I would love to learn is exactly what I need to have before I bring a bird home. thanks
I would recommend trying to find a good breeder or exotic pet store in your area as shipping parrots is incredibly stressful for a bird. But I'll definitely do a video on what to look for.
I really shouldn’t compare them to like a tortoise or like a snake lizards reptiles in general because realistically that’s what they are just hold the category
I just got a blue Quaker Parrot I have christend him Skittles the people who owned him before me as he was an unwanted Christmas gift a I am a beginner and I have read a lot up online and UTube and thank you for you Videos I would give you a 10
by the way -- im so in love with that pionus -- he is the perffect little guy-- I so wosh i had a bird to give my male (cookie) a little company - the female - didnt do that - she loves me uggg so i have two now who just dont like eaxh other much - they are not brutal but they fuss and argue and fight - i keep hoping omars will contatc me
One thing that is very different than cats is that they really require much more time. If you are able spend quality time with them daily, you can indeed end up with a tame, friendly, lovable, goofy little bird. But again, no shortcuts - you have to spend time interacting with them daily :)
All my parrots died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Our birds suddenly fell, and our CO alarm didnt go off, and our windows were open, so we all ran outside. The idling tow trucks next door to us nearly killed us, and while I miss my birds, this knowledge saved my entire family’s life.
I have a giant cage a Java play stand well it's a table top one but still an a floor bird stand and a carrier to go away and I only have one green cheek conure lol the up start cost me more than the bird an the bird was 600$ because it's a pineapple green cheek conure and I bought the prevue wrought-iron cage and my bird is spoiled lol
Hi !! This depends on the person. I have a Lovebird. He is well behaved. When he needs to get goes in his cage. He is out most the time. He is not a bird on the ground, my other past Lovebirds we're at times. This guy is smart & stays up. He knows He is better off not on the floor. I can not have a 4 legged. I have feet & knee issues at the time. I am better off with a flying pet. He is awesome. I did not watch the video. I gave a busy day tomorrow. A dog or cat can get under my feet. Dogs & cats can get energy bursts & Zip under my feet in the past before I was on crutches for 12 years I have been tripped by digs a few times when they run fast. That's not good for a handicapped person. You & others should look at the bugger picture . Thank You for reading. Thank You for your Videos. I have seen only a few.
As someone who has had all three animals, gotta correct you a bit on the domestication of cats, as they are only _barely_ domesticated and not that far removed from their wild ancestors (The African, Asian, and European Wildcats). We actually didn't start intentionally breeding cats strictly for companionship until the 19th century, so they still exhibit most of the wild behaviors of their ancestors. There's a critical 2-8 week window in a young kitten's life wherein it's important to socialize them well to humans, otherwise they revert back to their wild nature. It's why feral cats can thrive in colonies completely without the aid of humans, whereas feral dog populations are not nearly as common. So cats are much more like birds in that sense in that they don't really _need_ us to survive; earning their trust is a privledge. It's just that the birds' wild nature is far less managable for the average person than cats are.. We can also safely spay/neuter cats, which helps _drastically_ in curving unwanted hormonal behaviors that you would otherwise just have to ride out with birds.
I love this channel - ! I owe two eclectus one male and one female -- I have two topics for you I think REALLy need to be covered The first is sex and the single bird! I love my female eclectus but She wants to fall in love with me - any interaction with her gets her attention - help! The second -even worse - my male - had some issue that made feathers fall out (no plucking) anyway - an avian vet near me that knows his stuff? none! - ohh there are vets here but and im sure in school they studied lots of aniamls but folks let now kid ourselves -- they dont know birds - these are dog and cat people - avain vets who work in that world are hard to find - so how and where do people get this kind of help.
I don't know where you are getting your 2000 PSI data for Macaw bite strength, but almost every credible resource I've looked at puts most of them around 350-400 PSI, with some estimates topping out around 500 PSI. 2000 PSI is on the level of a Hippo or an American Alligator. It's definitely not something a parrot could approach.
1:36 That's actually incorrect. Humans never domesticated wolves. Humans domesticated wild dogs... Well, more so the dogs adapted to the constant food source that is the human being. The only reason domesticated dogs have eyebrow muscles, is because evolution gave them that to easier manipulate humans with their baby eyes, wild dogs and wolves don't have that. However, I disagree on the point that a dog's love is "fake". They are pack animals by nature, same as parrots are flock animals by nature and cats are solitary by nature, which is why they just mind their own business most of the time. That's just how they evolved to survive
Do you think parrots are good pets or terrible pets?
in-between
they are amazing
They are great pets! Very rewarding -but it takes effort :)

Luckily, I consider myself pretty good at reading cat body language, so those times are few and far between.
Thank you for the wonderful video. I enjoy watching parrots and parrot videos, but actually am a parakeet person! I love learning about all birds though, and am happy to have found your channel!
I dunno what the bird is doing to that poor woman, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal where I live.
You guys are awesome. I have five different species. It’s a challenge. But I love every one.
I read the tumnail as "watch befor bullying" and I was like 0_o
I couldn’t disagree more about Macaws…. I agree that most people aren’t Macaw people but I believe with the RIGHT information they are the best parrots out there. I would love to come one a live stream and talk about it.
What type of bird is the green one playing with the caique?
I believe the half moon conure(?)
My caique bite my phone charger. How do you stop it?
How do you tame birds that are 2 or 1 years of age?
I would love to know more about doves, finches, and quail compared to parrots
I heard many people say pigeons and doves are lower maintenance than parrots
How do I bathe my pet Sulphur crested cockatoo😊
Good information. People really need to know what they are getting into when considering getting a bird.
Oh dear i have a rainbow lorikeet and 2 baby lovebirds
Help!!! (nothing happened i just got them 2 days before)
Gib me advices
My mom was given a African gray who wasn't taken care of properly he loved my mom and bit everyone else that was to close to her.
80 percent of the parrot food end up on the floor. Feeding parrots is way way more expensive than feeding a dog or a cat.
IS that a bronze wing pionus on your shoulder
yup!
I enjoy watching your videos and all the tips both of you are sharing. You're truly bird lovers. Just subscribed.
Thanks!
can u do a bird room tour? or a cage setup video
Question: why are lovebirds hardly ever spoken about or available at bird stores? Whatever bad wraps their getting doesn’t seem fair.
What is the bird on the right side so I guess your shoulder left side correction
How are dogs not a huge commitment pet ? Asking I have 4 dogs and they are very needy also lifespan is up to 16 years. I do want a bird at same point. Maybe a parrotlet
It’s sad to clip wings of a bird I believe but otherwise your birds look happy
Thank you for the great information !
Dogs, learned to understand humans to such a extent that they see us as family over countless years;
"They are just TOOO Nice" lol
But its good to know about how birds act. Wild animals after all
My local pet store is called cc pets, do you recommend them?
Not familiar with that store. Do they keep their birds out for people to play with?
Mhm! ^^
@@miriah_xoxo sounds like they're on track then! Good sign for a good store.
@@Fivesaflock Alrighty! Ty! ^^
i'm hoping to get a green cheek conure and was wondering if you could do a video on reputable breeders for hand raised birds.
I just got a blue Quaker Parrot I have christend him Skittles the people who owned him before me as he was an unwanted Christmas gift a I am a beginner and I have read a lot up online and UTube and thank you for you Videos I would give you a 10
Came for the parrots, left for the emphatic reminders of death.
I heard ravens have the learning capacity of a 5 year old like this kind of bird you could teach how to use keys and matches and stuff
by the way -- im so in love with that pionus -- he is the perffect little guy-- I so wosh i had a bird to give my male (cookie) a little company - the female - didnt do that - she loves me uggg so i have two now who just dont like eaxh other much - they are not brutal but they fuss and argue and fight - i keep hoping omars will contatc me
One thing that is very different than cats is that they really require much more time. If you are able spend quality time with them daily, you can indeed end up with a tame, friendly, lovable, goofy little bird. But again, no shortcuts - you have to spend time interacting with them daily :)
Can you do a videos about beak and nail trimming.
Cats live longer than 10-15 years, I had one for 22 years, and know some 30.
Your ear is like a toy for that little hawk parrot
Did you say that all of your birds are not flighted meaning all of them are clipped?
Please will you give a African grey a rating
Did you get your Pionus from Omar?
Play dates among dogs are cute. Play dates among birds usually involve war and bloodshed.

NOW THAT'S A LOT OF DAMAGE
I enjoy watching your videos.

I have seen only a few.
can you do a vid on the best pellets or food
Check this video out! ruclips.net/video/zpu9KM58P-c/видео.html
We can also safely spay/neuter cats, which helps _drastically_ in curving unwanted hormonal behaviors that you would otherwise just have to ride out with birds.
harnest/flight suit training?
They also talk about why they’re actually good pets
I love this channel - ! I owe two eclectus one male and one female -- I have two topics for you I think REALLy need to be covered
The first is sex and the single bird!
Can birds live with cats?
before ive watched it im gonna say YES my parrots are my best friends
I don't know where you are getting your 2000 PSI data for Macaw bite strength, but almost every credible resource I've looked at puts most of them around 350-400 PSI, with some estimates topping out around 500 PSI.
2000 PSI is on the level of a Hippo or an American Alligator. It's definitely not something a parrot could approach.
Larger macaws like Hyacinth with the tip of their beak.
No such thing as parrot being bad pets it's the owners with no research or knowledge.
It's like blaming the gun.
So your advice is to do as you say not as you do? Basically. Yes?
1:36
That's actually incorrect.
My favorites are reptiles🥰
